#EndSARS: ‘We Had Option to Shutdown Social Media’ – Minister Says as He Advocates Cyberspace Regulation

Sunday Dare, Minister of Youth and Sports Development said that even though the Federal Government had the option to shut down the social media space to quell the #EndSARS protests that took place last month, it chose to allow the freedom of expression.

The minister who disclosed this while featuring on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme said there was need to ensure control of the cyberspace.

Dare said other nations had undertaken measures to assert some level of limitation over the social media space but Nigeria remained an exception.

The minister while admitting that the social media have enormous benefits, said that as a country, we must start to think of how to curtail fake news. There must be some level of responsibility and some level of punishment to those that create chaos out of mischief in our country.

He commended the use of social media by Nigerian youths to fuel the #EndSARS movement but maintained that the internet must be controlled.

“The fact that our youths used it to mobilise is commendable. But the talk about the regulation of the social media has been around for a while. We’ve seen other countries taking practical steps in that direction, this country has not done that.

“Even during the #EndSARS protests, the country had an option (but) the country never went for that final option.

“There was no time the cyberspace was shut down, people were still able to connect themselves through the various social media platforms. And that shows a government that is committed to the rights of freedom and association of every citizen of this country,” Dare said

According to the minister, the social media was used to peddle fake news which provoked some youths to violence.

He added “Where you have fake news destroying lives, the government has a responsibility to make sure that there is a level of control. It is not censorship but some level of control.”

Politics / Obasanjo Scores Buhari Low On Foreign Direct Investment, Security by Abroadian: 8:39am On Oct 30, 2020
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has once again rated the Muhammadu Buhari administration low on intervention security and foreign direct investment, saying that a lot is desired if the country were to impact reasonably on its citizenry.

Obasanjo disclosed this at a virtual parley of former heads of state at the instance of President Muhammadu Buhari on 23rd October 2020, following the state broadcast to address the shooting of peaceful protesters at Lekki toll gate area of Lagos and other forms of violence that ensured.

The former military and civilian leader quoted by Presidential aide on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina in a statement released on Thursday warned that the country needs heavy local and international investments to make laudable impact.

He said, “Let me commend your speech of last night, which the nation had been waiting for. You made points that I believe need to be commended. You said peaceful protests were part of democratic practice. You also indicated that the demands of the genuine protesters had been accepted, and you were working on implementation.”

The former President said the activities of hoodlums who hijacked the protests should be condemned, “as they took away the protests from those who initially planned them.”

On the job and economic situation in the country, he said the interventions being made were good, but not far-reaching enough for a population of 200 million people.

“We need heavy local and international investments to make the impact we need to make. Our Foreign Direct Investment is inadequate. And we need to get better results in security, so that the investments can come,” he said.

Also speaking at the meeting, General Abdulsalami Abubakar talked about the need for intelligence gathering and synergy among the security agencies, whom he says should avoid “multiple mandates.”

He canvassed more interaction with the international community, so that they can adequately understand what is going on in Nigeria.

“Funding of security agencies should also be looked into, while the media should be adequately engaged,” the former head of state added.

Politics / Motorists Whine As Petrol Scarcity Rocks Abuja (photos) by Abroadian: 9:25am On Oct 28, 2020
There has been scarcity of Premium Motor Spirt (PMS) popularly known as petrol in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja as long queues were seen at most filling stations in the city, African News Today reports.

Motorists in FCT have had to spend several hours in the queue to buy petrol for their cars. The queues started on Tuesday, October 27 across the capital city and its environs.

Our correspondent who visited filling stations experienced long queue in most of them while some were totally shutdown.

Roadside sellers popularly known as black market sellers were seen by the roadside selling petrol at exorbitant prices while stranded motorists were forced to patronize them.

A manager in one of the stations along the Kubwa expressway in an exclusive interview with African News Today on the cause of the long queues said that it was induced by panic buying by people. He said that neither Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPEND) nor other regulatory bodies in the sector were on strike. `

Reacting to the development, a driver simply identified as Fred said he spent more than two hours in the queue but was yet to buy petrol.

He said, “The delay in buying petrol has delayed by appointment which I was rushing to meet up with. Unfortunately, I cannot proceed any further because my tank is almost empty. I don’t understand why one has to wait for such long hours to buy petrol which the government recently increase its pump price.”

The petrol stations, however, maintained the N158 per litre price.
