Education / UDUS Students Bemoan New Academic Calendar by abumaryam012(m): 6:48pm On Dec 06, 2019 |
Students of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) have bemoaned the new academic calendar. The UDUS Senate at its 334th meeting approved the 2019/2020 academic calendar. The calendar, which extends the resumption date of the school from December 9, to January 6, 2020 has been described by many students as unfavourable. Reacting to this, Abdullahi, a 500-Level Medical Laboratory Science student, expressed disappointment over the calendar, referring to it as “backwardness.” “I am disappointed with the 2019/2020 academic calendar released by the management. They should try to continue it the way it was last session. This is backwardness, as our calendar was faster before ASUU strike arose.” Abdullahi advised the management to amend the calendar. “I urge the management to please find a solution to it.” Fatima, a student of Veterinary Medicine, bemoaned the four weeks first semester break and the three weeks for registration of new and returning students. “It would be very slow to spend four weeks for a semester break. The number weeks for the registration for returning and new students are too much. They should be considerate,” she lamented. Fatima also urged the school management to amend the calendar. “I urge the management to amend the calendar. They should pity us that are reading six-year courses.” In his own reaction, Ismaila Suleiman Khalifah, a 300-Level student of Education and Islamic studies, expressed shock over the extension of the holiday. According to him, the school will be lagging behind in terms of academic stability. “I was shocked and amazed as to why the school calendar would be changed like this. We don’t understand the reason behind the extension of the holiday. “Seeing this calendar, unlike when we were affected by strike. The school would be lagging behind in terms of academic stability.” Khalifa urged the management to amend the calendar to maintain its position as one of the schools in the North with fast academic calendar. “I urge the management to please adjust the calendar, for this university is one of the fastest universities in the northern part of this country, some years back. I wish the university to remain raising the standard.” Also, Muhammed Aminu Ismaila, a student of Chemistry said the calendar was unfavourable. “I personally felt unexcited when I saw the newly approved 2020/2021 academic calendar. While the last calendar kept our mindset in peace that we are going to resume on November 9. Now, the backwardness of the calendar was revealed.” However, while many students called for its amendment, a few of them praised the university for the calendar. Adeleke Abdulrahman, a 300-Level Education Mathematics student, sees no wrong in it. He said the long calendar was the best way for students to understand what they are being taught in class. “The calendar is not bad. The management did so well by adding three months to the calendar and that the best way through which students could understand what they are being taught in class,” he said. Olookoba Abdulwasiu, a 300-Level Law student, acknowledged the university’s decision on the calendar. According to him, the calendar was planned in a cool manner and that should not trigger negative reactions from students. |
Nairaland / General / Buhari Breaks With Tradition, Names Southerner As NAHCON Chairman by abumaryam012(m): 3:19pm On Dec 04, 2019 |
President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated Zikrullah Olakunle Hassan as the chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). If confirmed by the senate as expected, Hassan, from Osun state, will be the first southerner to head the commission since it was set up 13 years ago by former president Olusegun Obasanjo. The position had been thought to be permanently zoned to the north. The first chairman was Muhammed Musa Bello, from Adamawa state, who was inaugurated in May 2007 for a term of four years. In 2011, former president Goodluck Jonathan reappointed him for a second term, which expired in 2015 — after which Bello was appointed FCT minister by Buhari. Abdullahi Mukhtar Mohammed, from Kaduna state, has been acting as chairman since 2015. Hassan’s name was sent to the senate on Tuesday alongside those of other executive commissioners: Abdullahi Magaji Hardawa (operation, inspection and licensing) from Bauchi, north-east; Nura Hassan Yakasai (policy, personnel management and finance), Kano, north-west; and Sheikh Momoh Suleman Imonikhe (planning, research, statistics information and library), Edo, south-south). Part-time members are Halimat Jibril (Niger), Abbas Jato (Borno), Garba Umar (Sokoto), Ibrahim Ogbonnah Amah (Ebonyi), Sadiq Oniyesaneyene Musa (Delta) and Akintunde Basirat Olayinka (Ogun). Representatives of ministries, departments and agencies are Shehu Dogo (aviation), Nura Abba Rimi (foreign affairs), Rabi Bello Isa (finance, budget and national planning), Zainab Ujudud Sheriff (health), Aminu Bako Yarima (Nigeria Immigration Service) and Ibrahim Ishaq Nuhu (Central Bank of Nigeria). Hassan served as amir-al-hajj (leader of pilgrims) of Osun Pilgrims’ Welfare Board in the past. |

Education / UDUS To Offer Scholarships To Scholars by abumaryam012(m): 2:32pm On Oct 25, 2019 |
UDUS to offer scholarships to scholars To encourage students’ performance, the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) has insituted a yearly Undergraduate Student Excellence Award beginning from next session. In a statement, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Lawali Abubakar, said the gesture is a way of inspiring industrious students towards scholarship. It said beneficiaries are entitled to: a scholarship equivalent to the registration fees for the student’s programme; a letter indicating that he/she emerged the best student in previous academic session; attending a cocktail party organised by the vice chancellor with one friend of his choice; as well as having the name of the student published in the university bulletin. The statement directed deans of faculties to submit names of best students in their faculties who have made a 4.50 cumulate grade point average (CGPA) on the five-point scale. “In view of this therefore, you are hereby to submit names of best students in each programme in your respective faculties with a 4.50 CGPA on the five-point scale to the Office of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic),” the statement stated. Reacting to the development, Mikail Rodiyah, a 200-Level student of Law, noted that the scholarship would go a long in encouraging students to perform more excellently. She said: “It is a very encouraging development since the scholarship is a prize for their hard-earned grades, it will encourage the students to perform very well in their study.” Similarly, Lawal Maryam, a 300-Level Faculty of Agriculture undergraduate, lauded the management. Maryam is however dissatisfied with the criteria, which she described as ‘too strict’, and might hinder the chance of many students from winning it. “Actually, it is a good development, Maryam said, adding: “But I’m not pleased with the requirements. They are too strict. What will happen if no one makes 4.5 (CGPA) from the faculty? This may, in fact, impede some departments from enjoying this opportunity. The qualification should purely be for best students in every department, irrespective of their CGPA

Politics / Obasanjo Makes U-turn, Declares Support For Buhari by abumaryam012(m): 10:34am On May 02, 2018 |
WORKERS' DAY: OBASANJO MAKES U-TURN, DECLARES SUPPORT FOR BUHARI New-Nigeria Reporters 01/05/2018 Former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, today veered from his earlier stand that President Muhammadu Buhari has ran out of idea on how to lead the nation and should be voted out of office in the forthcoming 2019 general elections in which Buhari is seeking reelection for a second term in office. Chief Obasanjo made the declaration today while addressing the Comrade Ayuba Wabba-led leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) who paid him a courtesy call at his Abuja residence as part of activities marking this year's 'Workers' Day' Obasanjo told the NLC leadership that he watches with great admiration the superlative performances of President Muhammadu Buhari during the interactive session with US President, Donald Trump at the Oval Office in Washington DC where Buhari is currently administering a three day working visit to the United States of America. Chief Obasanjo who said President Buhari has done his best for the Nigerian workers in terms of prompt payment of salaries and other wages, regretted his earlier stand against Buhari's reelection bid, blaming the President's media handlers for their refusal to make public Buhari's massive achievements especially in the areas of infrastructure, fighting corruption and curbing insecurity in the country According to Nnrnews.com, Chief Obasanjo told his guests that President Buhari could perform better than any other Nigerian in the exalted office in the next four years, noting however that age is the only limiting factor against the President's performance in the forthcoming general elections. "I can say I was misled by some quarter of the media to believing that President Muhammadu Buhari was performing below average. I learnt a lot after making public my stand against Buhari ahead of the forthcoming general election. That was when his media handlers deemed it fit to avail me some documents containing his achievements within the three years he came to power. I blame them for misleading me and other Nigerians. By this his performance in Washington DC, I believe he (Buhari) is still high in spirit and can perform better than any other Nigerian in the next four years." Obasanjo stated He thanked the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) for their relentless efforts in always fighting for the Nigerian workers through legitimate means, adding that the time has come for the Federal Government to review the country's minimum wage to better the lot of the Nigerian workforce. |
