Computers / Re: Advice Needed On HP Probook Laptop by Adewale1603(m): 12:30am On Oct 22

They are both the same. It just depends on their configurations.

An Intel Core2Duo 3.2GHz (4GB RAM) desktop CPU and an intel Core2Duo 3.2 GHz laptop (4GB RAM) both functioned the same, barring any differences in their video card configurations.

An Intel Core i3 (3-gen) with 4GB RAM desktop CPU and an intel Core i3 (3rd gen) laptop with 4GB RAM both functioned the same.

Back in the day, the single thing that was used to determine processor speed was the GHz number, like 2.0, 2.4, 3.0, 3.2, etc.
The advances in today's technology has made things noticeably complex for today's generation, with the never-ending gens, instead of simply focusing on the GHz speed.

As an aside here, In 2012, I bought a new HP 650 notebook PC that is still working today. Asides the cosmetic blurs, it works like new. All I have had to do was change the battery every two years and the keyboard, which I used to buy from Toplink Communications in Ikeja. A replacement original battery then was 4500, but it is around 16,000 now because of market forces. I have also used an HP Probook for my transcription work that served me very well.

And it is not just HP. There is Dell Vostro, IBM Thinkpad, Lenovo, Toshiba, Fujitsu-Siemens. I even once used our very own Zinox in my final year in the university that served me for 6 years or more.

The power consumption of a desktop is not the same with a laptop, and the CPU cores and clock frequency are way higher in desktops than laptops

Yes, the power consumption is more, but it is worth it. Nowadays that it seems light has improved everywhere in Lagos, it should not be a problem. A UPS will also help for times of unexpected loss of power, so you can safely save your work and shut down properly without losing what you were doing. Don't get me wrong, I am not asking anyone to buy a desktop. A laptop obviously, being mobile, dare I say, is even better. I guess it's just a thing of preference.

the guy is talking about laptop upgrade not desktop, laptops are not that easily upgradeable because the bottleneck is the processor, graphics and CPU cores, so getting a laptop with many cores and dedicated graphics will make a great difference

It sounds like you just want him to patronise you so you can milk him off.

Most new or expensive london-used laptops that they sell today in Otigba have poor build designs, even with their i5 and i7 and 8th gen ati gbo gbo e. An example is the Bang & Olufsen series of HP Elitebooks. The build quality is so subpar that there is no noticable area in the trackpad where you can left-click or right-click. The whole trackpad is flat, and so you wouldn't know when your finger accidentally taps an area of the trackpad that you didn't want to.

It is true that laptops are not easily upgradable, but most well-built laptops back in the day had an easy way to get to the RAM slot, the HDD compartment, the CMOS battery, the Wi-Fi module, the main battery, the keyboard, etc. Whenever there is a fault in any of these parts of the laptop, they could be replaced, as they sold the parts in Otigba then. And then, when you take apart a laptop, you usually can change many things that are not working, and so on.

Forget what they are producing nowadays with in-built batteries and hidden RAM and HDD slots. It's all a plot to get you to buy the next gen that is released when you don't really need to.

Computer Village has really changed and moved with the times. Most shops now sell 1 million Naira iPhones or 800,000 Samsung Galaxy
"S25" cheesy or if they are selling laptops, it's these i5 and i7 7th and 8th and next-gen that may not be very good. You may still get a good, old i3 or i5 or i7 laptop, but it would be one of the early generations like 2-gen or 3-gen. However, most are just moved with the latest thing and don't really value the genius in the minds of the designers of the early-gen laptops. Anyway, let me stop here.

guy you need to step up and make research, and move with the improvement and advancement in technology, you're still living in the past or stone age or let me say eras of windows ME, and windows XP. There is bound to be advancement in technology.
The part where you said both laptop processor and desktop processor are the same and performs the same, that's when I truly knew the kind of person I'm arguing with. I doubt if you do make researches, because if you do, you will know that there are desktop processors and mobile processors. A laptop uses a mobile processor meant for laptops only and it's highest cpu core frequency is usually ranges from 2.7ghz to 2.8ghz, due to advancement in Intel technology, we now have turbo boost and hyper threading, where the frequency can boost more when doing intensive tasks or operations. Tell me where you see a laptop with a processor frequency of 3.0ghz and above before, you want to kill that laptop.
A desktop is more bulky and larger and has enough space or room for cooling and ventilation, and consumes more power compare to a laptop, that's why a desktop uses desktop processor which can be overclocked up to 3.0ghz and above and some uses quad cores CPU.
So for your information a laptop and desktop doesn't use the same CPU, we have both mobile processors and desktop processors.

Concerning the processor generations, you don't expect technology to be stuck to olden Intel pentiums or core 2 duos processor, the 1st gen is improvement over the core 2 duos, same way 2nd gen is improvement over the 1st gen. 3rd gen is also improvement over the 2nd gen, those processors are advancement and improvements over the previous generations, some things have been improved and changed upon them, so as to have a better and more efficient performance.
If you have used a 1st gen processor laptop before and a 2nd gen processor laptop, you will notice that a 1st gen laptop is more hotter and consumes power more than a 2nd gen laptop which is more cooler, the improvement upon it is improved CPU fabrication, less power watts consumption and others, that's why it's more cooler.
If you have also used a 3rd gen processor laptop before, you will notice that it's also more efficient and cooler, and consumes less power than a 2nd gen processor laptop, That's how it goes on there are improvement over the generations.

Concerning the slimmer and more compact laptops designs, it's also due to technology advancement, the motherboards are more compact, slimmer and more cooler than olden laptops motherboards, hence the slimmer designs.
A core 2 duo laptop will consume much power, so it requires enough space for cooling and ventilation of the CPU that's why they are always bigger and bulky in size compare to nowadays laptops that are more cooler and consumes less power, that's why they are slimmer and light weight.

And concerning HP fragile designs of bang and Olufsen, it's not something that you can just generalized, there are lots of laptops manufacturers, brands, designs and series, everything boils down to the individual choice or preference, there are rugged and strong HP laptops designs too, same as Dell, most especially mobile workstations laptops. You can just generalized based on some series models, there are consumers laptops, office type laptops, business laptops, gaming laptops, tough book, workstations laptops, mini, tablet form e.t.c and there are also lots of form factors laptops, different design here and there, all these are possible due to the advancement in technology.
In the time past laptops used to be bulkier, heavy and large to carry, but thanks to technology.

I don't sell laptops, I am just a lover of technology. Whenever one wants to get a computer, what you should have in mind is what you intend to use the computer for, what purpose it would serve you. So there are lots of form factors laptops out there, it's you that will know what you actually want. There are tablet form laptops, mini laptops, laptops with soldered rams, embedded SSD or Emmc storage, inbuilt batteries e.t.c nobody is forcing anyone to get it, it's what you need that you will go for and no marketing strategy to make laptops non upgradeable, so that you can continue buying newer generations.

Some laptops are actually upgradeable, it's because of the stress and disassembly and not friendly user upgradable until you go to a PC technician that's why it's usually discouraged.

Some laptops with same motherboard chipset are upgradeable you can actually remove an intel pentium processor to replace with a core i3, i5 or i7, on a laptop if they are within the same chipset, you only need to remove the former processor from the CPU socket and replace it with the new one and reapply the therma paste back, and upgrade the RAM aswell by adding more RAM stick to the RAM sockects, same as HDD or SSD. Not all laptops has inbuilt or embedded rams and HDD, same as batteries.

Yes, I know. But a Pentium 4 3.2Ghz (max Windows 7) and a Core2Duo, Dual Core 3.0 GHz (max Windows 10) also have very fast speeds. Along with the processor, a vital component that affects speed is the RAM and SSD.

More RAM equals less hog when running applications, and an increased SSD, although not necessary, can help if the 128GB is getting full.

I use my Core2Duo for heavy video editing, graphics design with Adobe CS4 Suite (Photoshop and Illustrator), CorelDraw, GIMP, and so much more.

If you want to be deceived by i3 or i5 or i7 and the never ending gens, you can go ahead.

I just gave my advice based on my own experience.

I should state though that mine is not a laptop. It's a complete desktop system with keyboard and mouse, the way I used it ever since I was in SS2, when our family bought our first computer with Windows XP and we used to buy pirated CDs from Ikeja. Pros will remember Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, the failed Windows Vista, Windows 7, and on and on.

Windows 8.1 today is still very reliable, although not officially supported by Microsoft. But if you're careful and you continuously update Windows Defender, you should be fine.

My present CPU was bought from Ikeja for 15,000, monitor 5,000, keyboard and mouse 1500. Altogether, I don't think I spent more than 25k, from where those guys that sell US-used desktops normally stay.

Unfortunately, they have purchased that place and chased them all away, and I don't know where they have moved to.

But Computer Village is vast and you might see it in a random place if you have strength to walk around. Not many people sell those US-Used desktops.
we know desktops are faster in speed than a mobile laptop, so you can't compare a desktop to a laptop. The power consumption of a desktop is not the same with a laptop, and the CPU cores and clock frequency are way higher in desktops than laptops. the guy is talking about laptop upgrade not desktop, laptops are not that easily upgradeable because the bottleneck is the processor, graphics and CPU cores, so getting a laptop with many cores and

Why are you talking from both sides of your mouth?
what I'm saying is if he wants a more noticeable difference in the speed and operations of his laptop, his best bet is to buy a new laptop with higher processor specs and even higher graphics, as upgrading this former one will not make any difference, cos It's real bottleneck is the old processor it's tied down with and it's integrated intel HD graphics 3000 on it's same CPU die chip, upgrading ram and HDD won't make any noticeably improvements.

inikamoze:
I have a HP Probook 5330m Laptop, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD 2nd-gen laptop, will upgrading to 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD make it faster?
Should I just look for money to swap the laptop and upgrade to a higher-spec laptop?

Pls advice
this your current configuration should still be moderately fast enough, upgrading it further will not make that much noticeable difference or improvement, there is not much difference in upgrading 4gb ram to 8gb ram nor 128gb SSD to 256gb SSD since your laptop processor still remains the same 2nd generation. What you need to have a more faster and powerful laptop is to swap that one and buy a new laptop with more recent generation like a core i5 7th or 8th generation or core i7, 6th generation, 8gb ram and SSD storage type

The unfortunate thing is that hunger doesn't kill so easily like that, if not, it would have been better if people are suddenly dropping down dead on the streets, maybe the government will have a change of heart. But hunger doesn't kill like that, people will only continue suffering, looking unhealthy, losing weight, falling sick, be a shadow of their former selves
