Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Why Did You Quit Your Last Job by Aimolatunde1(m): 8:38pm On Jun 08, 2021
Six weeks after I got the job as a Fleet Analyst at Silver Freight and Allied Ventures (Sfav), I left due to toxic work culture and verbal abuse. Your salary will come at least a month late. You’ll work from morning till night, even on Sundays and blame shifting is a goto escape for almost everyone there. The HR will yell at anyone, as long as you’re a staff and they overload you with work of about three people.

You can try to cope, but I bet you’ll become jaded at the end.

Business / Re: How Do I Recover My Money From A Debtor ? by Aimolatunde1(m): 9:27pm On May 29, 2021
I have a similar case.
There is this guy I lent some money early this year. I had just gained employment in the company (Silver Freight) in Kaduna. His father, a former Kaduna senator owns the company. so I lent him the money with the assurance that we both work there and that his father was his suretee. He was supposed to pay back the following week. Little by little, 1 week enter two, he was giving one excuse upon the other until I had to leave the company (I only used six weeks in the company) due to verbal abuse and unhealthy work culture. He stopped picking my calls at some point, His father barred my number after explaining to him.

His father is former senatoe aliyu lawal, he has a sister in the army so there is no threat that can get to him...
Guy still never pay me till now.

Very correct. I wanted to ask the difference between a Welder and an Iron bender. My Structural Engineer goofed big time when I was building as I wasn't around when the building started up to decking level.

It was when we were about to do the decking that I called a seasoned iron bender, with a lot of construction experiences under his belt, to do the iron works for me. On getting to my site, because of some structural defects he saw, he advised places that we needed to put hidden beams, open beams and other reinforcement amendments to support the integrity of the building in certain places of the decking that were not in the structural plan as the building is a lengthy one.

My "COREN" registered structural Engineer agreed with him completely. That was how the building was saved. Since then, I had relied on the iron bender for certain things pertaining to the building.

Engineering is based on three basic pillars; study, experience and practice. By experience, craftsmen such as masons, carpenters and steel fixers have become very good in their crafts. A project manager should know how to find a synergy between the design of the consultant and craftsman advice in order to derive the optimum quality of work.
The existence of unqualified engineers with COREN registration is not far-fetched, this is Nigeria (y’know). Also, COREN registration number does not distinguish between the mechanical engineer and the electrical engineer. In the same vein, your structural engineer might have been certified as a construction engineer and not a structural engineer (you wouldn’t know that).
Another thing is that you Engineer might have agreed to the advices of your iron bender because it wouldn’t have I’ll effect on your building. Structural engineers design using limit state philosophy. See it as the least requirements for a safe structure (more does not hurt).
Quick question: for how much did you commission your “COREN” structural Engineer.
Free advice: do not depend on steel fixers (iron benders) for your structural advice. No matter how good a craftsman is, they can only pass for the grade of a technician. They would not understand the working principles of your structural elements. You just read of the case of one advising his client to buy 8” rods instead of 10”.

I think you should elaborate on the quality of sharp sand used only for molding interlocks.

Apart from the others you've mentioned which are known to me. One can also used sharp sand and 3/8 coarse. Those in PHC who are familiar with it's usage understand. You only need to tell the person supplying the coarse sand the usage purpose to enable him bring the best quality.

Whenever you need to produce concrete or concrete related material (not mortar), washed sand is the best.
It is good to add stone dust (not more than 40% of fine aggregate) for improved quality but you’ll be fine if you don’t.
Yes you can use 3/8” coarse aggregate, but not anything above 1/2” (of course 3/8 is smaller than 1/2).

Ok sir. The quality of the constituents too matter though. I've not seen many good sharp sand around... not even the ones filled with mud/dirt that are sold in Ajah and Ikorodu.

______
Quarry dust can be utilized in concrete mixtures as a good substitute for natural river sand giving higher strength at 50% replacement (Balamurgan et al., 2013).
______
The compressive strength of concrete from stone powder showed 14.76% higher value than that of the concrete made of normal sand (Mahzuz et al., 2011). https://www.researchgate.net/publication/320213222_Parametric_Study_on_Quarry_Dust_and_Bacteria_in_Cement_Mortar_for_Next_Generation_A_Review

1. I agree with you on the quality of sharp sand available. I expected that you’d have seen my comment where I mentioned that the best sharp sand is washed sand (I also put it in bracket like I am doing here -gutter sand). Unwashed sand contains silt and/or clay that reduce the quality of the resulting product.
2. The above papers you cited never mentioned complete replacement of fine aggregate with stone (quarry) dust. They all mentioned partial replacements (also which I mentioned). But you said you used stone dust only for your own interlocking blocks. Remember I advised him to include stone dust but not to use only stone dust.
3. Partially replacing sand with stone dust will definitely improve the quality of your concrete/blocks. This is because the dust will fill up voids between the sand (fine aggregates) particles. The less voids you have, the stronger your concrete/block although it is not the only factor contributing to concrete strength.
I have read theses and journals that place the optimum proportion of partial replacement between 30% and 40%. There is the tipping point after which the strength begins to decline with an increase in stone dust proportion.

Here is my journal article on blocks:

What will happen if he use only stone dust for his production? I've over 25,000sqm without sharp sand and there has never been any issue.

Read my previous replies please. Remember, also, that The strength of concrete is a function of the strength of its constituents.

Thank you sir. This is much appreciated.

What I understood from your post is that I can use sharp sand, cement and half inch granite to make the stones (in the right ratio), in a situation where the cost of the stone dust is too much for me. Please confirm.

The following are combinations (at the right ratio);
a. Stone dust + sharp sand
b. Stone dust + sharp sand + 1/2” granite
c. sharp sand + 1/2” granite
d. sharp sand alone
all with cement.

It’s advisable you use stone dust (for the fine finish y’know you’d still get good results without it) but do NOT use it without sharp sand.

Abeg make una help me with information. I no wan enter one chance wink

@N3xt
I read up your article on the subject matter on KoboCity. Thanks for that. But it didn't answer the question on the suitability of sharp sand to make the stones.

1. Interlocking stones are not load bearing components so you don’t need granite. You can use it only if you want, then you are advised to use half inch granite.
2. Using stone dust all through is bad for your stones. You should combine stone dust with sharp sand (gutter sand or washed sand will give the best results). The mix ratio should be 60:40 (sharpsand : stone dust). If you use only stone dust, it wouldn’t take time to erode. Stone dust help you achieve a fine finish but they are not strong for bonding.

Your mix ratio matters too, remember.

Apt. I went to see a tiler recommended to me by a friend where he was working in someone's house. Looking at the house, I knew money was not a problem to the owner. But the kind of finishing, mismatched tiling and irrelevant things but highly expensive I saw made me to shook my head.

See poor choices everywhere. I knew immediately that the owner paid good money for ugliness. I thought to myself that at least he should have consulted an interior decorator or visit Internet to see some modern designs considering the fact that money wasn't his problem.

These are bound to happen when people trust the expertise of craftsmen over technicians and that of technicians over technologists and so on... It is only pathetic that learned people who are expected to know better are the ones who fall victims of these quacks because they want to save the cost of commissioning a project manager.
Many of the craftsmen are not qualified enough to practise, they didn’t spend time enough to learn as much as required. They should also not work without the supervision of a project manager. There are also no laws regulating the influx of people into the construction industry.
Also, sadly, the trade test certificates that are meant to be the qualifying document for craftsmen has lost its respect. No one is being tested before certification as long as you have enough money to buy it.
Quality has a cost, and it cannot be ignored. You’ll pay for it one way or the other.
