An illiterate can be an engineer (e.g some roadside car repairers, some electricians etc) or are these people not engineers? Knowledge of engineering to some extent can be passed through vocational or informal training. There are some people who will spend 4 years in the university studying Mechanical engineering yet they won't be able to detect even the least fault in a car. Medicine on the other hand is not vocational in orientation, that's why you can't see most polytechnics offering medicine as course. Medicine students spend close to seven years studying the course. I will only agree with you if you say that generally, engineers are more skillful and innovative than their medical counterparts but when it's come to intelligence, it's a very different ball game. Engineering is all about relating ideas to real world, your intelligence has little to do here. When I was in secondary school, I wasn't articulate when it came to expressing myself in English though I could read well and comprehend but I was unbelievably a Maths genius...
