Health / Re: My Experience With Health Insurance In Nigeria by Akintoey: 1:08pm On Mar 26, 2018
Buying Health Insurance in Nigeria is mandated by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Companies are mandated by the NHIS to get Health Insurance for employees, when the company is composed of 10 or more employees.
I recently came accross Reliance HMO, a Health Insurance company in Lagos, Nigeria that offers Health Insurance packages with easy signups on the company website.
Nairaland / General / Not Everyone Sees The American Green Card As The Gateway To Heaven by Akintoey: 9:26pm On Dec 01, 2016
Over 95% of disrespectful nairalanders who just insulted the Prof. are children and grandchildren to him on a age scale.
A man at the age of 82 years told us that electing trump means its time to come home. With his age and reputation, really
what does the American green card add to him.
At 82 he is clearly not working for money, schools all over the world fight to put him in lectures. If tomorrow he decides to
apply for a visitors visa to the U.S, he will be granted (sorry if your application has been rejected ten times).
Not everyone sees the American green card as the gateway to heaven.
Travel Ads / The Great Escape - Enjoying A Cheap Vacation by Akintoey: 10:53pm On Sep 18, 2016
It's coming to the end of a summer to remember, my vacation in Ghana was the perfect getaway I always dreamt about. For tourists and visitors to Ghana, there are several destinations to unwind in the major cities, especially Accra, Koforidua, Takoradi and Kumasi.
Just two months back I looked at my savings and believed I was going to be holed up in my apartment watching National Geographic while eating pizzas.
I was lucky to have a colleague at work put together a vacation strategy which would allow me travel to exotic locations on a shoestring budget. It took us careful planning and some financial discipline on my part to pull it off.
Just looking at the travel brochure of the beautiful Accra beaches, tourist attractions and enchanting safari wild life, I had doubts about making this trip.
Unlike most people who dream of exploring exotic destinations in Africa and later call it off for fear of its expense, I was able to make my vacation a reality.
I listed below most of the tips that helped me book cheap hotels and save money on my visit to Ghana.
Setting your daily spending budget
The first advice I got before taking off was to do some research, figure out a reasonable spending limit and stick to it at all cost. This might mean forgoing some luxury, staying in hostels, cooking your own meals and using public transportation.
Most Safari brochures I saw only listed luxury, yet I was able to book cheap Accra hotels for less than $35 (100 Cedi).
Instead of shopping in the Accra mall I bought most of my Groceries in the popular Makola market. I found out that by eating out at local restaurants and staying away from the Luxury restaurants it wasn’t so difficult having a daily budget limit of $150.
Book hotel room and flight in advance
Just after completing your research, it would be wise to start making your reservations. Search for flight and hotel deals for your location.
Also ensure the hotel booking website specifies if the hotel provides facilities such as Air conditioners, mini-bars, WIFI and Jacuzzi’s. Hotel rooms with such facilities are on the pricey side, you would better off with basic hotel rooms.
When booking your flight it is better you avoid taking off or arriving during peak periods of Fridays and Saturdays; tickets are more expensive then.
Shared accommodation and Service apartments
Shared serviced apartments are gaining popularity in some parts of Ghana. Just when I thought I was making amazing savings with hotel deals, I discovered AirBnb in Ghana was cheaper.
Tourist and expatriates who intend staying longer share apartments in the city. Some of these apartments have facilities for cooking, entertainment and bathtubs.
Some of the hostels offered a common room, a comfortable bed and restaurant.

Religion / Celebrating Eid Al-adha by Akintoey: 8:22am On Sep 12, 2016
Muslims all around the world are preparing to celebrate Eid al-Adha, one the most important festivals in the Muslim calendar.
Eid al-Adha is an Islamic festival to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) to follow God’s (Allah's) command to sacrifice his son Ishmael.
Eid al-Adha is also known as the Feast of the Sacrifice, or Greater Eid, it is distinct from Eid-al-Fitr, which was celebrated earlier this year.
Throughout, muslim faithfuls are urged to focus on the virtues of Ibrahim and his willingness to sacrifice his son as a sign of devotion to Allah.
The date of Eid al-Adha also varies in accordance with the Islamic lunar calendar, falling on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th month. The date differs geographically: in the USA, UK and Saudi Arabia it is expected to start on Saturday 10 September and last four days, while in West Africa, it will be celebrated on the 11th and 12th of September.
The slaughtering of rams is one event that Eid al-Adha is mainly associated with. It is expected of every Muslim home to kill at least one ram on this day.
The Eid al-Adha Festival is renowned for fostering unity between both Muslims and non-Muslims; most people invest their time, having fun with family and friends
We’ve listed below a few suggestions on things to do this Eid al-Adha holiday.
1. Enjoy the holidays indoor
Some families just prefer having a cozy family holiday at home. Making sure that there is no dull moment might take some planning and a mix of people ready to have fun.
It's always better to start with some food, gather your friends to enjoy some listed fun activities such as painting, board games, and charades.
By the end of the night, you could download a trending movie and enjoy a bowl of popcorn with your friends.
2. Stay in touch with family and friends
Celebrating Eid al-Adha far away from home could leave you feeling home sick. Regardless of how much fun, the people you have it, is what makes it count.
Thanks to Apps like Whatsapp and Skype, you can experience Eid al-Adha with you family. Nowadays it is becoming a tradition for travelers to set up video conferences to chat with their family and friends.
3 Take a vacation to a nearby city
Since the Eid al-Adha holiday is quite short, we can only recommend nearby destinations. Take a flight to Accra, enjoy the the beauty of nature in a resort in Accra. The city of Accra features some of the finest beaches in Africa. If you’ve been busy all year, it time to get out and become one with nature.
Make sure to check out popular Accra beaches such as Kokrobite Beach and Labadi Beach resort.
4. Go shopping and nonstop fun
The major shopping malls in Accra (Marina Mall, Makola Shopping Mall, Shoprite, West Hills Mall and Accra Mall) are usually packed with a never ending stream of shoppers, seeking to buy gifts for their friends and family. Just before going shopping couples usually hang out at the Cinemas to catch a movie.
Regardless of your plans for Eid Al Fitr, remember it doesn’t require a lot of planning or money, it only requires you have some fun and relax.

Religion / How Not To Enjoy Ramadan by Akintoey: 9:15am On Jun 11, 2016
The holy month of Ramadan is of significance to both Muslims and non-Muslims in Ghana. It is an experience like no other, it has that feeling of being exactly where you ought to be. I’ve spent the Ramadan period abroad with a stench of nostalgia and emotions; the period had me reminiscing childhood memories of me and my siblings gathering around the Television for our favorite show, dancing, playing in the streets until it is time to break the fast with our families and mum doing a great job of preparing the best dishes.
Ramadan is the best opportunity for colleagues, old school friends and distant family members we don't get to see often to catch up by having Iftar and Suhoor time together.
My typical Ramadan day starts quite dry, cranky, lacking focus and sleepy at the same time with the inability to console myself with some caffeine I usually need.
While that is a reason behind being counter product and lazy, it's the indiscipline while fasting that costs us the the most; we over compensate for the fast by overeating usually through the night, we stay up watching TV instead of having a good night rest and eventually drag ourselves to work to perform poorly, funny enough that’s the routine on most weekdays.
While at work, most of the time is spent staring at the computer screen, counting every minute while not making it count and talking about food while disturbing home to find out what is for Iftar.
Then it's time to go home, drive down town like a maniac to get some much needed rest and some food.
Iftar is like a moment of revelation and enlightenment that is best enjoyed with friends. It is always better to start with fluids like soup before going for the heavier portions. I top it all up with a cup of coffee and I’m back, alife. I usually enjoy the evening with friends at an outdoor swimming pool in a nearby hotel before heading home.
Before sunrise we gather for the Souhour at a friends place or in a Ramadan tent known some of us played through the night. It's time to start the fast again.
There you go, this cycle goes on and on throughout the whole Ramadan period and we wonder why we are always tired.
Ramadan is more than a spiritual month, it is a month of fellowship and creating that future nostalgia with every gathering, Ramadan tents, delicious food, decorations and Ramadan Fawanees.Spending Ramadan in Accra, Ghana is an inspiring experience that I always look forward to yearly.
Travel / How To Travel On A Budget by Akintoey: 7:14pm On Jun 04, 2016
Last summer I enjoyed my vacation in Ghana. It took meticulous planning and discipline to pull it off as I was on a tight budget.
With its exquisite beaches, famous landmarks and enchanting beauty, Ghana is the traveler's dream. Like many people dream of visiting Africa and put it off for year because we fear the expenses. While not the regular adventure traveler I was able make my vacation a reality at an affordable cost.
I put together some tips to help you find cheap accommodations and save money on transportation, food and accommodation like I did on my visit to Ghana
Set your daily spending limit
When going on vacation, it is always advisable to set a spending limit and stick to it. This might mean being camping, cooking your own meals and staying in cheap hotels. Going by my assessments of most holiday packages I couldn't get a hotel for less than 150 Cedis (about $50) per night in the capital Accra. I found out that by eating out at local restaurants and doing most of my shopping in the popular Makola Market in the city center of Accra. I was able to able to stick to my maximum budget of $150 daily.
Book in advance
Before booking your accommodation, make sure that is all you are paying for. Some hotel booking websites allow you specify rooms without breakfast, mini-bars, WIFI and other features that make hotels expensive.
When making your flight reservation you might want to avoid taking off or arriving during peak periods of Fridays and Saturdays. Also do some research on your points of Interest and how much it will cost you.
Staying with Locals
Just when I thought I was making some savings on hotels, I discovered AirBnb in Ghana was way cheaper. These apartments had facilities for cooking basic grocery and cost came very cheap. The hostel accommodations in Accra offered a good bed, a common room and had a small restaurant that catered to our feeding.
Travel / How To Survive A Long Road Trip by Akintoey: 9:14am On May 23, 2016
Traveling can be fun, most travelers, especially cross country travelers always dread the thought of it. You get to cram up in a slow bus with limited legroom and small seats, no wonder it's not an experience to look forward to.
Knowing you intend to endure your next trip, I decided share some of my best tips and tricks to make your long road trip enjoyable.
Entertainment
The trick to long trips is keeping your mind occupied to forget about how small your legroom is for the next several hours. This takes us back to your packing for the trip; pack a paperback book or even better download Audiobooks from Audible to keep you company throughout.
Audiobooks have a way of putting you in and drowning out the noise of chatty seat mates and babies.
Mobile vehicle chargers come in handy on such trips; when the boredom makes you start watching a movie on your mobile device and the battery runs out. Travelers sometimes run into these crises when trying enjoy the journey but get stranded because their Smartphone battery runs out.
While booking a hotel room isn't necessarily a form of entertainment, taking your time to choose the best accommodation ensures you feel confident of where your eventual destination is.
Sleeping
Sleeping on while on a public vehicle is easier said than done. It is safer to rest well the night before (trying to catch up on your sleep might not feasible).
Remember to pack your Eye masks, headphones and neck pillow as sleeping aids. A glass of red wine just might be enough to sooth you and enable you sleep better on the road.
Staying Healthy during and after your trip
Lots of respondents to health surveys have pointed to long distance traveling as an underlying factor in their falling sick. Most respondents indicated getting some form of fever within the week.
While trying to stay healthy on such a trip, hydration is you friend, ensure you always have a bottle of water nearby. I also bring along a pack of vitamins and minerals to take before and after the trip to boost my immune system

Travel / 7 Tips For An Affordable Vacation Abroad by Akintoey: 1:08pm On Apr 13, 2016

Taking a vacation abroad is an opportunity to surround ourselves with new experiences, food and traditions. I am here to tell you how doable that dream of yours in resorts or safari’s is.
Every year for quite a while now I make my African Safari and resort Vacations (nay Adventures) my way of reanimating during summer.
My recent Vacation to Ghana on a budget clearly backs these 7 tips to make your dreams of an affordable vacation a reality.
Customize Your Own Trip
Jumping on the bandwagon of travel packages is not a good idea in 2016. The available information online makes it easy for travelers to tailor-make their own trips.
Months prior to your vacation subscribe to travel magazines, bookmark websites and content available on your destination.
Having a custom trip enables you to choose the places you are interested in while also eliminating costs that comes with the typical travel packages.

Create a Budget Estimate

Just after deciding on your destination, do some research online for flight reservation, travel insurance and hotel booking websites; get a big picture of the your vacation.
Also visit local travel blogs online to get an idea of your daily expense which range from food, transportation to entrance fees.
Save, Save and Save some more
At the end of every month set aside a certain amount of money. While you could do this with a funds box, I would advise you to open a special Savings account with withdrawal penalties in your bank.
If you are serious about traveling, you must start cutting down on your current spending habits to accommodate this vacation.

Booking Early Is Key
Experience has taught me that the earlier you book at least 10 weeks in advance, the higher your chances are of getting cheaper rates for flight and accommodation even when demand is high.
Since cheaper is better for you, start your Visa applications earlier and make reservations as soon as you get your visa.

Be Flexible With Your Plans

Make your booking/reservations early, this allows you to be flexible with your plans. If after your detailed analysis you decide that your destination is unaffordable, or at high demand (probably crowded), you can always make use of plan B.
Travel Off-Season
For most things including travel, the higher the demand the more it costs. When deciding on the time of year to travel, choose the Shoulder-Season which occurs just before or after the peak periods. You should, however research properly to avoid having your vacation during a period of bad weather or the dullest months.
Avoid Spending Too Much On Accommodation
If it's your honeymoon, you can cross this off the list. If not don’t waste your money on accommodation. On my last trip, after getting my flight ticket, I used an Online Booking Agency to find the best suitable hotel. I simply did a search for Hotels in Kumasi and selected bookmarked the best location and facilities such as swimming pools, Satellite Television and Wi-Fi.

Travel / Easter Is The New Christmas by Akintoey: 7:49am On Mar 21, 2016
I’m driving home for Easter, can’t wait to see some faces. I’m glad that every year, I manage to go home instead of staying with my friends over this beautiful holiday.
I grew up always looking forward to the Christmas holidays, now I dread it. During the Christmas holidays the shopping malls are jammed, Cinemas are full, the beach is crowded, restaurants are full, clubs and resorts are devoid of relaxation. Besides longer stretches of traffic jam everywhere you go, Malls seem to hike their prices to cater for demand.
For me Easter is the new Christmas; not only is it peaceful and spiritually fulfilling, it creates the best family moment ever.
Easter starts with my ride back to Accra, on Friday morning. I expect to breeze through the city without any traffic stops along the highway (not the case on Christmas holidays).
I try to find out which member of my crew is back in town, on getting home. That’s because Friday night is about hang out with old friends.
On Easter Saturdays I rediscover Accra, with my siblings. We ride out to Bojo beach, watch a movie or two at the Cinemas and end the day in a hotel Spa close to home.
Easter Sunday is the Zenith of this holiday. It features the Easter Church Service in the morning and the traditional family lunch.
It's always nice to have our family around the same table, to have lunch and talk. My mum never ceases to put up a challenge every year, another futile attempt to fill us up to last the year.
Our Easter regular is made up of Chichinaga, Banku, salad, fresh greens and Jollof rice.
From that table, we could all travel down memory lane and appreciate the joy of family.
By Monday morning, I’d probably be on my way back to my station in Kumasi. You can bet I’d be smiling throughout the trip; being inspired and fully charged to take on the year.

Family / Gifts For Mothers Day by Akintoey: 7:41am On Mar 07, 2016
Mother’s Day is a day is a day of appreciation for mothers and mother figures. This appreciation day is observed on different dates of the year, depending on the country.
People celebrated mother's day by giving Gifts, Cards, Poems, clothes and Vouchers.
The only unfortunate thing is the people who shop for mother's day are mostly husbands, fathers and children. Even together these set are far from the greatest shoppers.
The lucky bunch shops for someone who will act so honestly joyous when she receives the most afterthought gifts. However, I’m sure you care you know if she’s happy.
That's why I decided to put together two Mother's day tips that never fail.
• Spas and Saunas
Besides treating your mom to the best Spa treatments, it is best for mother and spouse bonding. It's a most memorable experience that provides access to a body wrap, facials and massages. Some of the most popular Spas are found in Hotels and club resorts.
These Spa Hotels offer relaxation, pampering and some overdue rest. Spa packages also include manicures, touch ups, pedicures, foot treatment and oil scalp treatment. The choice spas provide complimentary drinks and snacks.
• Mothers day Hampers and Gift baskets
This tops the list as the simplest mother's day secret. A Hamper that contains those little things she always wanted. A mother's day cheat note is to just go buy a ready-made Gift basket that contains those little things mummy likes.
However, if you choose to do it on your own, you will need to create a focused hamper niche e.g. Food, beauty, body care.
As an example, let’s say that you are creating body Care and beauty niche Hamper buy Items such as bath oils, pedicure kit moisturizing soaps and nail polish. Every niche hamper needs the topping or memorial. So for the body care and beauty niche, choose something like the electronic hair straightening brush.
Take time out to celebrate the one who nurtured you. Show how much we care about them .

Romance / Is Valentine's Day All Hype Or A Necessity? by Akintoey: 5:01pm On Feb 14, 2016
Celebrated yearly on the 14th of February, this love fest is believed to have originated from the Roman holiday Lupercalia and dates back to the 5th century. The Day is named after a Christian martyr, Saint-Valentine and is a day where many people exchange cards, gifts, chocolate or flowers with their loved ones “valentine”.
Saint Valentine’s day often referred to as “valentine's day” or simply “Val’s day” has over the years become an important day for many lovers worldwide. The truth behind the Valentine story is still unclear, all the stories simply highlight his appeal as a sympathetic, loving and romantic figure. Over the years this day has been celebrated by many lovers and couples whether married or in a relationship. Although the true relevance of this day has been overshadowed somewhat by the immense sexual aura affiliated with the day,the question still remains: Is Valentine’s day a hype or a necessity?
In the not too distant past, valentine's day was celebrated in a soft, quiet and very modest manner. With many couples or lovers spending a substantial amount of time with their “valentine” or lover. This was mainly a setting of intimacy, love, affection, reflections and rejuvenation of broken relationships. Couples would talk over a bottle of wine and some good food at home and exchange small gifts. This way of celebration has recently been modified into a more sophisticated and extravagant show of wealth rather than love. Many lovers are now much more concerned with where their partners will take them on that day. Whether it is a full weekend in a Luxurious Hotel or resort or a fully packed package of a candle light dinner, massage and partying, the main focus has gradually shifted from the show of love to the show of wealth. This is further augmented by the wrong notion that the lavish spending actually proves the worth of love. Moreover, expensive gifts varying from giant teddy bears to fancy cars and jewellery are now the main side attractions of this day. Failure by one to provide these things poses a great threat to his or her relationship.
Many people argue that this trend is not binding and that many people actually still spend valentine's day in the old-fashioned yet very modest way. The fact of the matter is,do we actually need this day? If yes, is it necessary to go through the stress and strain just to match up to changing trends even if you cannot afford it? Is it really necessary? Can’t we show love without all of the noise and spending?
A lot more believe that valentine’s day is now a mere hype which is just a day’s show of spending and lavishness after which several relationships break anyways. The challenge here is being able to draw a fine line between showing love and spoiling your lover with gifts. It is true that the lavish spending can be a true show of love. However,it is also true that the spending can also be a show of nothing or an attempt to please your partner,his/her family and friends. What plans have you made for valentine’s day?

Whatever way one chooses to express love, the mind-blowing question still remains unanswered;IS VALENTINE’S DAY A HYPE OR A NECESSITY?
