Nairaland / General / We Need N10bn To Fix Arik Airline — Amcon by aondonatime14: 3:33am On Feb 13, 2017
The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) on Sunday said it had discovered deep rooted rot that embattled airline, Arik Air.

AMCON said it would require over N10 billion to fix the rot before the largest local carrier could resume full and uninterrupted flight operations to its regular routes across the country and beyond

The asset company made the disclosure in a statement signed by its Spokesman, Mr Jude Nwauzor in Lagos.

Newsmen reports that the airline was on Feb. 9 taken over by the Federal Government under the auspices of AMCON as a result of a whooping debt profile of over N300 billion.

AMCON had directed that the airline would now be managed by Capt. Roy Ilegbodu, a veretan aviation expert, under the receivership of Mr Oluseye Opasanya (SAN).

The statement noted that the situation was so bad that only nine aircraft out of the 30 in the fleet of the airlines were operational.

According to the statement, 21 of them have either been grounded, gone for C-check in Europe, among other forms of challenges.

“As if these problems are not enough, the airline does not have money to procure aviation fuel for the nine operational aircrafts because no dealer wants to sale aviation fuel to Arik if it is not on cash-and-carry basis.

“This also calls for public understanding because flight schedules may be realigned based on the nine aircrafts that are available, technically sound and ready for flight operation,” it said.

The statement said it was discovered that Arik also owe its technical partners and also in perpetual default in its lease payments and insurance premium, leading to regular and embarrassing squabbles with different business partners.

“All these problems in addition to huge staff salaries, which have remained unpaid for 11 months; vendors that supply different items to Arik Air that are also owed means that Nigerians may have to tarry-a-while to allow the new management clean up the huge mess at the airline before Arik would finally resume uninterrupted........VISIT FOR COMPLETE DETAILS http://www.vintageinfo.com.ng/2017/02/13/we-need-n10bn-to-fix-arik-airline-amcon/

A fashion designer, Mrs Omotolani Alele, on Wednesday told an Idi-Ogungun Customary Court, Agodi, Ibadan that her husband beat her each time she refused to worship his family idol.

Omotolani, who lives at Ojoo area of Ibadan, had approached the court for dissolution of her five-year-old marriage on grounds of brutality and threat to her life by her husband, Anthony.

Politics / Wike: Show Evidence I Bribed Inec Officials With N110million by aondonatime14: 7:21pm On Feb 07, 2017
The Rivers State Government has challenged the Nigerian Police Force to provide evidence that the State Governor, Nyesom Wike bribed some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, with the huge sum of money as alleged by the Force.

Rivers Government was reacting to earlier reports showing the Force displaying huge sum of money allegedly recovered from INEC officials.

The Police investigative Panel had claimed that Wike bribed INEC officials with the sum of N110m to manipulate the December 10 legislative rerun.

A statement by the Rivers Commissioner of Information, Tam-George said by using images that sink to the “lowest depths of blackmail and criminality,” indicated that the Force had been compromised.

The statement reads, “The attention of the Rivers State Government has been drawn to the melodramatic images of heaps of cash, circulated in the media by the so-called police panel of inquiry into the re-run elections in Rivers State, on the 10th of December 2016.

“According to the Police, the heaps of money were “evidence” of bribe allegedly given to officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, during the rerun polls.

“We consider the allegations of the Police as shameful, defamatory and reckless in the extreme. Never in the annals of infamy have we seen a vital State security institution descend to the lowest depths of blackmail and criminality, as the Nigeria Police Force has done in this case.

“A month ago, we alerted the world to the dark, Orwellian plot by the Nigeria Police to implicate governor Wike in a phoney bribe scandal. Now, the Police appears to be acting with shocking predictability, by making wild and completely groundless allegations against Wike.

“The Rivers State Government challenges the Nigeria Police to show proof that Governor Wike financially induced any official of INEC. Does the Police have Bank records of the purported transactions between Governor Wike and the Electoral Officers? We challenge the Nigeria Police to move quickly to ...More Reads At http://www.vintageinfo.com.ng/2017/02/07/wike-show-evidence-i-bribed-inec-officials-with-n110million/
Politics / Police Recovered About N110 Million From Corrupt Inec Officials by aondonatime14: 3:41pm On Feb 07, 2017
The Chairman of the panel, Damian Okoro, made the allegation while presenting the team’s report to the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, in Abuja on Tuesday.

He alleged that three senior electoral officers collected N20 million each out of the N360 million given to them by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers, while the remaining officers received N15 million each.

Mr. Wike has denied any wrongdoing despite an audio showing he may have compromised some INEC officials financially. The Rivers Governor also accused the police of bias and refused to cooperate or allow state officials cooperate with the police investigation team.

Mr. Okoro, a deputy commissioner of police, further alleged that there were some cases of misconduct on the part of some electoral officers, who were compromised in the line of duty.

“By this investigation, this panel has diligently unravelled what went wrong with the re-run election in Rivers, the details of which are contained in the report.

“We discovered that failure of leadership and followership rather than law enforcement was responsible for the political upheaval in the state,” he said.

Mr. Okoro added that the task given to the panel was challenging because of the tense political and security atmosphere in the state....MORE READS AT http://www.vintageinfo.com.ng/2017/02/07/police-recovered-about-n110-million-from-corrupt-inec-officials/

Foreign Affairs / 63-year-old Iranian Begs, Weeps Bitterly Over Us’ Decision [see Video] by aondonatime14: 12:16pm On Feb 03, 2017
Reactions have continued to trail President of the United States, Donald Trump’s executive order limiting immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries – Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen,

The US decision restricts travel for Muslims to the US for a temporary period of three months.
But the decision, which ‘raised dust’ globally saw Iran retaliating, by also banning all US citizens from entering the country, saying ban will remain in place until Trump’s order was lifted.

At the U.S Customs and Border Protection, an Iranian immigrant who had been resident in the US for several years before the development, wept uncontrollably, begging Trump to reconsider his decision as the ban would affect his means of livelihood.

The 63-year-old man, Hossein Khoshbakhty, spoke with Immigration officers, insisting he is an Iranian-American.

In tears, Khoshbakhty said, “The American and Iran relation is affected already? But we are people, we are not government. We are not doing nothing.

“If the government does something wrong with this government, we are not responsible.

“I am American and Iranian. What I can do?

“Why I have to be punished for somebody else’ problem? I don’t know what I have to do.

“We ran away from Iran to this country because they do something like this but we did not know we are going to have the same situation here.

“I’m a U.S citizen for about 15, 20 years, please Trump, take back your order.

Politics / I Know What It Takes To Stop Killings In Southern Kaduna – Goodluck Jonathan by aondonatime14: 11:24am On Feb 03, 2017
The immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan says the solution to ending the killings in Southern Kaduna crisis are already included in the 2014 National Conference held on 2014.

In his presentation to the United States House Sub-Committee on Africa, the former President said failure to arrest perpetrators of previous religious crisis had emboldened those who engaged in such acts.

The former President’s presentation was contained in a statement by his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze.

Jonathan also declared that if Nigeria failed to address religious violence and extremism, the menace will destroy the country.

He said, “If, as a nation, we do not kill religious persecution and extremism, then religious persecution and extremism will kill Nigeria.

“The potential danger associated with the level of conflicts going on across the country is so glaring that no sane mind can ignore.

“Your invitation (of the sub-committee) letter profusely highlighted the issues of the killing of Christians in Nigeria, the last major incident being the recent killings in Southern Kaduna in Kaduna State, and I do not need to elaborate on that.

“The challenge is how we stop that from recurring. How do we ensure that Christians and Muslims co-exist peacefully in Nigeria and practise their religions freely without discrimination, molestation and killings?”...FULL INFO AT http://www.vintageinfo.com.ng/2017/02/03/i-know-what-it-takes-to-stop-killings-in-southern-kaduna-goodluck-jonathan/

Politics / Why Fg Has Not Secured Release Of More Chibok Girls – Lai Mohammed by aondonatime14: 8:29am On Feb 03, 2017
Minsiter of Information, Lai Mohammed has explained why only 21 Chibok girls have been freed from the Boko Haram sect.

He also spoke on his recent reference to Bring Back Our Girls Group as an opposition.

The government spokesman said while the group was playing a very good role in reminding the government that the matter was still not resolved, the administration believed that it was not fair on their part not to take a holistic picture of the situation.

“We wanted to carry them along that I invited them to Yola and from Yola, we were flown to Sambisa, both in the morning and night. We went to the entire area to see what the Army and the Air Force do on a daily basis in the search of the Chibok girls,” Mohammed told The Sun.

“We were together for more than 24 hours with them, we took briefings. At the end of that trip, they admitted that, yes, the federal government, especially the military is professional in its conduct and that they are committed in finding and rescuing these girls.

“When we talk about Sambisa, it is not Jabi Park, it is 60,000 square kilometers, which is 18 times the size of Lagos State. But despite that, the military has been able to secure the entire Sambisa forest today....MORE DETAILS AT http://www.vintageinfo.com.ng/2017/02/03/why-fg-has-not-secured-release-of-more-chibok-girls-lai-mohammed/

Politics / Nigeria Can Produce Three Million Barrels Of Crude Per Day – Kachikwu by aondonatime14: 9:01am On Feb 01, 2017
The Minister of State, Petroleum Resources , Mr Ibe Kachikwu, said that Nigeria is capable of producing three million barrels of crude oil per day from the Niger Delta region.

Kachikwu stated this at a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs on Tuesday in Abuja.

The minister said the insecurity in the region had been undermining the nation’s capacity to realise its potential in oil production.

“It is important we continue to sustain the institutional engagement and negotiations which are key to the development of the region.

“Our target is zero militancy by the middle of 2017, and an incident reduction in the region by 90 per cent by 2018.

“We must resolve current militancy problems and bring back oil production to 2.2 million barrels per day,” he said.

He lamented that over $40billion had been spent in 12 years and
there were no infrastructures on ground to justify the huge expenditure profile......MORE AT http://www.vintageinfo.com.ng/2017/01/31/nigeria-can-produce-3m-barrels-of-crude-per-day-kachikwu/

Politics / Buhari Unfit In Handling Nigeria’s Interludes- Femi Falana by aondonatime14: 12:29pm On Jan 30, 2017
Human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), said that President Muhammadu Buhari was very slow in handling Nigeria’s affairs

Speaking on the status of the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, whose acting tenure expires in less than two weeks, Falana described the situation as worrisome.

“The Buhari administration claims the delay is occasioned by the investigation of some justices of the Supreme Court,” he told The Interview.

“But it should not take eternity to conduct the probe. The government should ensure that the investigation is concluded as soon as possible.

“The risk is that the delay may be politicized or even ethnicised. More dangerously, the Senate that will eventually confirm the nominee may be tempted to influence the decisions of the Supreme Court.

“That is what the delay in confirming the appointment of Mr. Ibrahim Magu as Economic and Financial Crimes Commission chairman has caused. The government must avoid a situation whereby the confirming authority is setting down conditions for the confirmation of the nominee for the post of the CJN.”

Asked if he thinks government might put Onnoghen’s name forward at the last minute, Falana said he could not afford to guess.....MORE DETAILS AT http://www.vintageinfo.com.ng/2017/01/30/buhari-unfit-in-handling-nigerias-interludes-femi-falana

Former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, now the minister of transportation, in a statement in Abuja on Sunday explained that Rivers government under him procured the armoured helicopters to fight criminals who he said were masquerading as militants, kidnappers and all other elements.

But has blamed the Former President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Nyesom Wike for the inability of the state to take possession of the two helicopters, which were seized by the Nigeria Customs Service and handed over to the Nigeria Air Force.

Wike on Saturday stated that he officially wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari, requesting that the two armoured helicopters bought by the immediate past administration in the state be given to the military.

He explained that he wrote the letter following the high custom duty charged for the helicopters and the alleged refusal of the present administration to grant the Rivers State Government the waiver to clear the choppers.

The statement reads: “With a strong political will to tackle these menace and make the State a safe place, Amaechi initiated a lot of measures to deal with the menace.
