Nairaland / General / Mother Of 4 Kills Husband Over N100 In Ilorin by arthgideon: 2:58pm On Dec 16, 2013
ILORIN — Tragedy struck, yesterday, at Oloje area of Ilorin when a housewife simply identified as Mariam allegedly struck her bricklayer husband to death with a stick following altercations between them over N100.
Vanguard reliably gathered that the woman, a mother of four all late, had recently returned into her matrimonial home after she parted ways with her husband following irreconcilable differences.
The incident which occurred yesterday, had since thrown the community into mourning as sympathisers thronged the deceased’s compound.
An eye-witness told Vanguard that their relationship went sour again yesterday morning, leading to a hot argument between them over N100 which the woman was said to have demanded from the husband.
The deceased, the source added, was said to have told the wife that he had no money which did not go down well with the wife thereby degenerating into a hot argument between them.
During the process, the wife was said to have picked a stick and hit the husband on his head and he fainted.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital where he was pronounced dead.
As the news of the man’s death filtered in,the woman on realising the gravity of the incident was said to have locked herself up in a room and inflicted wounds on her body using a razor blade.
To avert another tragedy, residents of the area, according to sources, forced the door open and dragged the culprit out naked before the police were invited to effect her arrest.
When Vanguard visited the decease ‘s family compound, family members and resident of the area maintained sealed leaps.

Nairaland / General / Death Toll Hits 19 In Sokoto-illela Road Crash by arthgideon: 10:44am On Dec 16, 2013
The Chairman of Illela Local Government, Alhaji Garba Sabon-Gari, says the death toll in the accident at Gidan-Sandaga village, along Sokoto-Illela village, has now risen to 19.

Sabon-Gari disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria in Sokoto on Sunday in a telephone interview.

NAN reports that 13 people were earlier reported to have died in the Sunday mid-day accident which involved two articulated vehicles from Fura-Girke and Inwala villages.

The two vehicles, with number plate LLA 22 XA and ABJ 801 XE, were going to Illela market when the accident occurred.

“Six more persons died some hours ago at the Illela General Hospital,’’ Sabon-Gari said.

NAN reports that 12 of those, who lost their lives earlier, died on the spot while one victim died later at the hospital.

Thirty-two persons, who were injured in the acciden were rushed to the same hospital for treatment.

Sabon-Gari said the state government and the Illela Local Government had mobilised additional medical personnel, who were assisting the hospital staff.

He said the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Sahabi Gada, had mobilised more medical doctors from Sokoto and Gada LGs in the same direction.

Nairaland / General / 10-year-old Wins Inter-school Monopoly Tournament by arthgideon: 3:39pm On Dec 13, 2013
Ten-year-old Blessing Umoh attends a school in Ajegunle, but her background paled into insignificance on Tuesday as she emerged winner of the maiden edition of the City of Lagos Inter-school Monopoly Tourney. Umoh, a Junior Secondary School 1 pupil of Caro Favoured College, Ajegunle, Lagos, beat 65 other contenders to emerge victorious in the tourney organised by Bestman Games.

The competition, which held at Terra Kulture on Victoria Island, attracted pupils from both public and private schools in the state.

The contest, held in different stages, saw Umoh displaying her thoroughness, diligence and skill to win the converted trophy. Right from the preliminary stage, the lass showed her industry as she emerged from among the 32 contenders in her group to become one of the six finalists in the competition.

Little wonder, at the final stage, the innocent looking but quick-witted Umoh, outsmarted the other finalists to win N.5m and a year-long meal voucher. Her success also earned her a giant-size City of Lagos Monopoly board.

While the organisers presented the board, First Bank Nigeria Plc and Sweet Sensation provided the money and voucher respectively to the youngster.

Umoh moments after her victory told our reporter amid sobs of joy, “I am very happy. I never knew I would win but focus and determination saw me through in the game. Again, I believe God helped me, because I prayed in the morning before coming for the competition.”

Interestingly also, destiny seemed to have played a role in her success. According to her school and teammate, their teacher and leader almost dropped Umoh for a more experienced male player.

She said, “Our teacher thought of changing Umoh. He wanted to replace her with another boy, but somehow he left her to participate in the contest.”

In the game targeted at promoting personal financial literacy among pupils, each of the contestants had $1,500 (monopoly dollar) to invest with and they had different investment options to display their business acumen. In fact, they were to spend their money in such a way that at the end of the game, they would have recorded higher value assets that bring best returns on investment.

So at the end of the over four-hour brain-tasking game of three rounds, spiced with background music and refreshment, Umoh had higher value assets and more money to invest than the other contenders.

Umoh said, “The game has taught me how to earn and invest wisely. It may be in property or other businesses.”

The lass, who wants to be a banker added, “Since the game has taught me to invest wisely, I will like to be a banker. I want to help people to keep their money and advise them on what they can do to generate more money.”

She noted that her father, Israel Umoh, supported her dream of becoming a deft monopoly player.

Apart from Umoh, a pupil of Top Grade Secondary School, Surulere, Ndu Godfrey, came second in the competition, while Ayotunde Olaitan of Fountain Heights School, Lagos came third.

The second prize-winner took home an electronic tablet sponsored by online retailer, Jumia while Olaitan got a-180-day meal vouchers from 3 Cousins and a Crook BBQ.

The Head tutor, Caro Favoured College, Mr. Chuks Ikem, savouring the success recorded by Umoh, noted that people should stop looking down on those from Ajegunle, because according to him, the popular ghetto has produced many shining stars in education, sports and music, among other spheres of life.

He admitted that he initially was nervous when he saw pupils from highbrow schools, but he had to encourage his pupils to go into the game with confidence.

He said, “One thing I saw in Umoh was that she was determined. I taught 10 of them for one week. When we arrived here and they started calling the names of schools from highbrow areas of Lagos, I felt a little bit shaky, but I told my pupils to be focused and determined. And at the end of the day it paid off.”

The Chief Executive Officer, Bestman Games, Nimi Akinkugbe, noted that since personal finance was not taught in schools, the tournament would make pupils to imbibe the culture of saving and investing wisely.

Akinkugbe, who stressed the need to teach youngsters personal finance, noted that it would help in equipping them with the right values.

She said, “The City of Lagos Edition of Monopoly Inter-School tournament teaches pupils financial literacy. It is good to catch them young. They can earn money by doing holiday job, and they can be taught to save from their pocket money.

“Bestman Games is using this novel tool to present some basic lessons in resource management by educating pupils, especially about the importance of financial literacy and responsibility from an early age.

“Some people learn this very late in life, and you discover that such people would have frittered away their fortune.”

The game, which also dwells on promoting sanity in Lagos, also has rewards for positive and negative behaviour.

Akinkugbe has set a target for herself and those who wish to support the initiative: to reach out to 100,000 pupils with 100,000 monopoly boards across the country.

Among guests, who attended the event, were the First Lady of Lagos, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, an Assistant Director in the state Ministry of Education, Mrs. Balogun Oluremi, Head, Corporate Social Responsibilty, FBN, Mr. Ismail Omamegbe, Managing Director, Sweet Sensation, Mr. Tunde Kamson, and Directors of Bestman Games, Mr. Odein Ajumogobia, and Mrs. Ibukun Awosika.

The schools that participated in the tournament include Senior Model College, Badore, The Apostolic Church Grammar School, Lagos, United Christian Secondary School, Lagos, Corona Secondary School, Agbara, Ogun State, Chalcedony School, Lagos and Ireti Secondary School, Lagos among others.

Nairaland / General / 11 Of Nelson Mandela's Best Quotes by arthgideon: 3:47pm On Dec 12, 2013
Nelson Mandela, former South African president and Nobel Peace Prize winner, has died. During his long life, Mandela inspired countless individuals.

Here is a collection of 11 of quotes that personify his spirit:

1. Nothing in this world is impossible and Mandela makes sure to remind us of that.
It always seems impossible until it’s done.”

2. A lot of people find it easy to be pessimistic and think of the negatives that can arise out of a situation. But in this quote, Mandela shows us that thinking positive is the only way to go. The more positive you think, the more positive the outcome will probably be.
I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death.”

3. Living isn't just about doing for yourself, but what you do for others as well.
For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

4. An ode to the fact that racism is not passed on genetically, but passed on through teachings.
No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

5. What it takes to be a real leader.
Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people."

6. Life is a course with endless obstacles to hurdle.
After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.”

7. We are too quick to give up and refuse to get up from our failures. If we don’t fight to get up, we are giving up on something bigger — life.
The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”

8. Sometimes you can leave a place and find that the only thing that has changed after all the years is yourself.
There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.”

9. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.”

10. Be brave!
I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

11. From the poorest of countries to the richest of nations, education is the key to moving forward in any society.
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Rest in peace Mandela. You will surely be missed

Foreign Affairs / Chinese Man Committed Suicide After Girlfriend Insist On Buying More Shoes by arthgideon: 11:28am On Dec 12, 2013
Chinese Man Jumped To His Death At Shopping Mall After Girlfriend Insist on Buying More Shoes

Tao Hsiao, a 38-year-old Chinese man jumped to his death at a shopping mall in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province east China, after a heated argument with his girlfriend who insisted they go into another store to shop, the Daily Mail reports.

Tao got tired of shopping and insisted they go home after the couple spent five hours at the mall.

An eye witness said:

"He told her she already had enough shoes, more shoes that she could wear in a lifetime and it was pointless buying any more. She started shouting at him accusing him of being a skinflint and of spoiling Christmas, it was a really heated argument."

The shouting match ended when the man chucked the bags on the floor and jumped over the balcony, smashing into Christmas decorations on his way down before hitting the floor seven stories below causing shocked shoppers to flee in panic.

Emergency services arrived at the scene but Tao was killed immediately from the impact of the fall.

"His body was removed fairly quickly. He actually landed on one of the stalls below and then fell to the floor so although the store was damaged it meant he didn't hit anybody," said a shopping spokesman

"This is a tragic incident, but this time of year can be very stressful for many people." he added.

I don't enjoy going out shopping with a female, they tend to take their 'sweet' time. But to get so frustrated that you'd jump off the 7th floor? It's so uncalled for. Worst case, just go wait in the car and she can come join you whenever she's done.

What do you think?

Science/Technology / Over 200,000 People Apply To Live On Mars Permanently by arthgideon: 9:58am On Dec 12, 2013
Over 200,000 people have applied to live on Mars as part of an ambitious proposal by private foundation Mars One to establish a human settlement on the Red Planet by 2023.

The application process opened on 22 April this year. 202,586 applications from 140 countries were received through the online process.

The applicants have agreed to stay on the red planet for the rest of their lives – and be filmed for a reality TV program.

The Dutch group wants to launch a supply mission that will land on Mars as soon as October 2016. A ‘settlement rover’ will then land in 2018.

They added that landing systems will be tested eight times before they are used to transport humans – a move that Mars One said will make the trips ‘much safer than moon missions’.

From the 200,000 applications, between 24 and 40 candidates will be selected to participate in a seven-year training program that would start in 2015.

Current applicants have three more rounds to get through before the final selection.

Would you sign up for such a trip knowing that you'll never return to earth?

Politics / Obasanjo Tells Jonathan To Forget 2015 by arthgideon: 9:35am On Dec 12, 2013
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has written a harshly-worded letter to President Jonathan, accusing him of condoning high-level corruption, promoting ethnic schism and deceiving Nigerians.
Obasanjo also alleged that an Abacha-style assassination squad was being trained and weapons being amassed to target 1,000 Nigerians whose names were on a political watch list, ahead of 2015 general elections.
He said Jonathan had promised to him and other Nigerians before the 2011 elections that he was going for one term only, and therefore advised him to keep to his words.
An apparently frustrated Obasanjo also lamented that President Jonathan had discredited himself by polarising the country along religious and regional lines, undermining his political party, becoming clannish and scaring away foreign investors.
The 18-page letter, titled ‘Before it is too late’, was dated December 2, 2013, and leaked on the Internet yesterday, sparking a furious debate online.
Later yesterday, the Presidency issued a statement confirming receipt of the letter from Obasanjo, and describing it as baseless, mischievous and indecorous.
The leak of the letter brought to limelight the simmering cold war between the two leaders.
Obasanjo gave 10 reasons why he decided to write the “open” letter, including that he had written at least four other letters to the president which were never acknowledged.
‘An honourable path’
On 2015 elections, Obasanjo said, “Up till two months ago, Mr. President, you told me that you have not told anybody that you would contest in 2015. I quickly pointed out to you that the signs and the measures on the ground do not tally with your statement.
“You said the same to one other person who shared his observation with me. And only a fool would believe that statement you made to me judging by what is going on. I must say it is not ingenious. You may wish to pursue a more credible and more honorable path.”
He said it would be “fatally morally flawed” for Jonathan to seek re-election in 2015, having promised Nigerians that he was going to be a single-term president.
“As a leader, two things you must cherish and hold dear among others are trust and honour both of which are important ingredients of character. I will want to see anyone in the Office of the Presidency of Nigeria as a man or woman who can be trusted, a person of honour in his words and character,” Obasanjo said.
He alleged that 1000 Nigerians have been placed on a political watch list and that an assassination squad was being trained to silence Jonathan’s opponents.
He said, “Allegation of keeping over 1000 people on political watch list rather than criminal or security watch list and training snipers and other armed personnel secretly and clandestinely acquiring weapons to match for political purposes like Abacha and training them where Abacha trained his own killers, if it is true, it cannot augur well for the initiator, the government and the people of Nigeria. Here again there is a lesson of history to learn from for anybody who cares to learn from history.”
He said the Presidency was providing assistance for a murderer to evade justice. Obasanjo did not name names, but he appeared to be referring to the late General Sani Abacha’s chief security officer Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, who was discharged by the Appeal Court in July over the murder of Kudirat Abiola.
“Presidential assistance for a murderer to evade justice and presidential delegation to welcome him home can only be in bad taste generally but particularly to the family of his victim,” he said.
“Assisting criminals to evade justice cannot be part of the job of the presidency. Or, as it is viewed in some quarters, is he being recruited to do for you what he had done for Abacha in the past? Hopefully, he should have learned his lesson. Let us continue to watch.”
Obasanjo blamed Jonathan for the squabble in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), accusing him also of anti-party activities by supporting opposition parties in Lagos, Edo, Ondo and Anambra governorship elections.
He said PDP national chairman Bamanga Tukur was not fully to blame for the crisis, as he is only “playing the tune dictated by the paymaster.”
“The chairman is playing the tune dictated by the paymaster (Jonathan). But the paymaster is acting for a definitive purpose for which deceit and deception seem to be the major ingredients,” he said.
Obasanjo also accused Jonathan of incompetence in the handling of the Boko Haram crisis by not addressing the underlying causes.
He said “conventional military actions based on standard phases of military operations alone will not permanently and effectively deal with the issue of Boko Haram.”
Obasanjo said Jonathan was being rustic. “For you to allow yourself to be ‘possessed’, so to say, to the exclusion of most of the rest of Nigerians as an ‘Ijaw man’ is a mistake that should never have been allowed to happen. Yes, you have to be born in one part of Nigeria to be Nigerian if not naturalised but the Nigerian President must be above ethnic factionalism. And those who prop you up as of, and for ‘Ijaw nation’ are not your friends genuinely, not friends of Nigeria nor friends of ‘Ijaw nation’ they tout about.
“To allow or tacitly encourage people of ‘Ijaw nation’ to throw insults on other Nigerians from other parts of the country and threaten fire and brimstone to protect your interest as an Ijaw man is myopic and you’re not openly quieting them is even more unfortunate.”
Obasanjo also referred to a letter written by Central Bank governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to Jonathan on the discrepancy between crude oil sold and revenues remitted to government coffers.
“This allegation will not fly away by non-action, cover-up, denial or bribing possible investigators. Please deal with this allegation transparently and let the truth be known,” he said.
“The dramatis personae in this allegation and who they are working for will one day be public knowledge. Those who know are watching if the National Assembly will not be accomplice in the heinous crime and naked grand corruption. May God grant you the grace for at least one effective corrective action against high corruption which seems to stink all around you in your government.”
He questioned Jonathan’s sincerity on the proposed national conference, saying “your later-day conversion into national conference is fraught with danger of disunity, confusion and chaos if not well handled. I believe in debate and dialogue but it must be purposeful, directed and managed well without ulterior motives. The ovation has not died down yet and there is always life after a decent descent.”
Obasanjo said he wrote the letter in the interest of national unity, democracy and good governance, adding that he knew he could be attacked by Jonathan’s men.
“Knowing what happens around you most of which you know of and condone or deny, this letter will provoke cacophony from hired and unhired attackers but I will maintain my serenity because by this letter, I have done my duty to you as I have always done, to your government, to the party, PDP, and to our country, Nigeria,” he said.
“I have passed the stage of being flattered, intimidated, threatened, frightened, induced or bought. I am never afraid to agree or disagree but it will always be on principles, and if on politics, in the national interest.… Death is the end of all human beings and may it come when God wills it to come.”
‘Baseless, indecorous’
In a reaction last night, the Presidency confirmed receipt of the letter from Obasanjo, but said his allegations were baseless and indecorous.
“We have noted the publication on several websites today of a letter recently written by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. The Presidency acknowledges that it has indeed received the said letter from Chief Obasanjo,” a statement by Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati said.
“We however find it highly unbecoming, mischievous and provocative that a letter written by a former Head of State and respected elder statesman to President Jonathan has been deliberately leaked to the mass media in a deplorable effort to impugn the integrity of the President and denigrate his commitment to giving Nigeria the best possible leadership.
“While many patriotic, objective and well-meaning Nigerians have already condemned the leaked letter as self-serving, hypocritical, malicious, indecent, and very disrespectful of the highest office in the land, President Jonathan has directed that none of his aides or any government official should join issues with Chief Obasanjo over it.
“The President himself will, at the appropriate time, offer a full personal response to the most reckless, baseless, unjustifiable and indecorous charges levied against him and his administration by the former Head of State.”
