Health / Wetin Nurse Dey Do Sef.? by Atf030: 4:10pm On Apr 09, 2019
Wetin Nurses Dey Do Sef??
Does that even sound like a question? It's even awkward or maybe a little offensive, but let me shock you, a lot of people don't know the roles of nurses in the health care sector. Some believe the duty of a nurse is just limited to giving injections, check your blood pressure‍and other parameters. But Nursing role is much more than that.

Those who have ever visited the hospital for health care must have had an encounter with a nurse‍⚕ (pleasant or unpleasant). But it's still obvious that a whole lot of folks out there do not really know what nurses do. Many have erroneous ideas about the nature, duty and responsibilities of a registered nurse.

Romance / 5 Things A Relationship Should Never Be by Atf030: 7:11pm On Jan 04, 2019
The quality of your life will depend on the quality of every relationship you keep. So, you make an effort to build and establish relationships with the people you meet. From there, you choose the one person you think will be worthy to spend the rest of your life with.

But there is no magic formula for a successful, positive and lasting relationship. There are also no secrets to what makes a relationship stronger. People have goals for the kind of relationship they want. But here are some definitive characteristics of what a relationship should never be.

“A great relationship is about two things; first, find out the similarities; second, respect the differences.” – Unknown

1.    It should not be abusive

No relationship is worth sticking for if it’s abusive. According to the Center for Relationship Abuse Awareness, this can take many forms like physical violence, sexual violence, emotional torture, financial abuse, intimidation, isolation, and threats.

Nairaland / General / Why A Family Planning Method May Fail by Atf030: 11:19am On Oct 30, 2018
About 53 per cent of unplanned pregnancies occur among women using contraceptives.
There are several birth control methods and to better cover them, we bundle them in groups such as barrier methods and surgery, among others.
Barrier methods
Dr Paul Kato, an obstetrician and gynaecologist at Span Medical Centre, says these include male and female condoms, cervical caps, diaphragms, and spermicides. He says some of the problems here include placement.
“Caps must be inserted by a qualified personnel. Also, if the wrong size is used, it becomes ineffective as there is no one-size-fits all,” he says adding that a woman should also consider the time factor because if a cap is inserted immediately after delivery, it will be displaced by the blood flow.
Dr Atuhaire says spermicides are also crucial in the performance of caps as they are supposed to be put on the outside of the caps. If they are not applied, sperms that have escaped the cap could fertilize the ovaries. A user also needs to be cautious because leaving a diaphragm or cervical cap in for longer than 24 hours increases your chances of getting toxic shock syndrome, a rare, life-threatening complication of certain bacterial infections.
Condoms
While commonly used, many do not care to look at the expiry date. However, if used past their expiry date, they are ineffective. According to Dr kato, application is also worth considering. “A male condom should only be worn when the penis is erect and the tip must be pressed before use to remove air and roll it to the shaft lest it rolls back during intercourse. Otherwise, poor application will cause situations such as bursting,” he says. Additionally, if the penis remains in the vagina long after ejaculation, there are chances of the condom rolling off causing sperm spillage hence conception.
Spermicides
Some people are allergic to the major ingredient in most; nonoxynol-9, hence developing sores in the vagina or on the penis. This makes one susceptible to HIV transmission during sex in case of an infected partner.
However, one cannot use caps without spermicides, therefore, a person who is allergic to them should opt for another method.
Awareness methods
“These are ideal for those with regular periods,” Dr Atuhaire advises. They include moon beads which she says if someone forgets to move the ring hence miscounting, they can easily get pregnant.
There are also safe days. Here Dr Atuhaire says one can only use them if their cycle is between 26 and 32 days. If your cycle is less that 26 or more than 32 days, then chances are high that it will not work.
Another method here is the 2-day method. “In this method, the woman keeps checking their vaginal secretions and for everyday that they feel the secretion and the next day, chances of getting pregnant are high,” Dr Atuhaire explains.
However if they get an infection, it becomes difficult to differentiate the normal virginal secretion from that caused by the infection hence cannot tell between the dry and wet days. So it is very easy for one to conceive.
Ovulation
“It works by a woman monitoring the times when they feel pain on one side of the body,” Dr Ssewagude elaborates adding that if one has sex, three days before their ovulation, they can conceive there is still sperm in the pelvis.
He also advises couples to avoid having sex two days after ovulation because the egg remains in the reproductive system for 48 hours.

Intra-Uterine Device
Dr Herman Ssewagude of 7 Hills Medical Centre, says in Uganda, the most common method is the Intra-Uterine Copper Device. It can fail due to poor insertion. This device is placed in the upper cervix. However, if it moves to the lower cervix, protection reduces.
Poor insertion causes dislodging. It could also fail when one continuously touches the strings causing dislodging. Women with a heavy period might also find it ineffective because it can sometimes get pushed by the blood.

Health / Why You Should Always Avoid Fragrance In Your Lotion by Atf030: 10:29am On Oct 30, 2018
When it comes to your health, there are some seemingly innocuous things you are doing that are more dangerous than you know. This is especially true of the cosmetics industry and why expert histotechnician Svetlana Wickstrom recommends a line of skincare products derived from chemical free ingredients.
Are you aware of the fact that when a product label says ‘fragrance’ they are not talking about essential oils or naturally derived scents but rather a mixture of chemicals combined to imitate a given fragrance? This is one of the most explosive issues in the industry today and here is some of what you should know.
Explosive in More Than One Way!
As funny as it sounds, a recent article in Fashionista online magazine states that your body lotion could, indeed, set off the explosives detector at the airport. That’s pretty scary stuff! While the two most common skincare products which have set off those detectors were actually rubs, the culprits are ammonium and nitrates, often combined as ammonium nitrate. Sounds like a preservative doesn’t it? While the only products that actually made it to the press were those muscle rub compounds, a number of body creams and lotions contain some of those ingredients and although ammonium by itself hasn’t seemed to present an issue, it’s something to be avoided.
Now About Those Fragrances
If you think that is bad, what you should know about the inclusion of fragrances in body lotions and creams is even more frightening. Are you aware of the fact that any time a product is labeled with the word ‘fragrance’ you are probably buying a scent that was manufactured in a laboratory? This is why products like Birdie and Peppers natural skin care products are proud to state emphatically that they never use any chemically derived fragrances in their creams and lotions. According to Svetlana Wickstrom, “The only scents you will detect are those derived from the inclusion of ingredients like natural rose hip and organic hibiscus, both with lovely smelling blossoms.”
What’s One More Chemical?
This is a mistake that altogether too many consumers make when choosing one product over another. You will hear many people saying that even natural ingredients are ‘chemicals’ as well so what’s the big deal? The big deal, as they would have it, is that these are chemicals found in nature and are not the product of mixing molecules together to get a similar effect but at what risk? So many chemicals manufactured in laboratories have later been found to promote a number of ill effects, many of which have resulted in a number of cancers.
In addition, many of these laboratories fail to disclose the actual ingredients or potencies contained within their products, which can lead to confusion and even allergic reactions. In contrast, custom supplement manufacturers are often heavily regulated for assurances in quality and potency and therefore are usually safer.
In the end, it’s important to know why you should avoid anything labeled as ‘scented’ or containing ‘fragrance’ because most often these are not natural ingredients and are chemicals which may, or may not, cause problems now or in the future. It pays to know what to avoid.

Nairaland / General / Electronic Cigarette: All You Need To Know by Atf030: 10:17am On Oct 30, 2018
If you take into account the America market, you will see that the electronic cigarettes have hit the market with enough force and the usage has also increased by leaps and bounds throughout the last few years. The tobacco market has also stepped into the game and they are also making huge dollars by promoting electronic cigarettes. There are companies like Buy V2 Cigs which are also helping the fight against tobacco cigarettes so that people can lead a healthier and safer life.

The companies usually welcome these products as the ingredients are all approved by the FDA and hence people are surer about the safety of these devices. But still there are many who are still not convinced about the fact that electronic cigarettes are the best alternatives to smoking. Here’s how the companies are combating against tobacco and are helping in building a better world.

Few facts that you don’t know
Unless you decide whether you choose to vape or to smoke, there are few facts that you should know about vaping. Check them out.

Do e-cigs actually help smokers ditch tobacco?
Well, while there are many stories of ex-smokers who could quit cigarette smoking after they took to vaping but there isn’t any substantiating research which proves this. But still, it is said that vaping is a healthier alternative to smoking.

The impact of e-cigs on children
As per the CDC, the total number of young adults who have been using electronic cigarettes has doubled and very soon it is going to triple. Are young kids becoming addicts to nicotine without even choosing a cigarette ever in their life? Are there anyone among them who may switch to tobacco cigarettes later on in life? We’re still not sure about the impact of e-cigs on teenagers.

The ingredients used to release the vapor
Marketing and promotion is aimed at making people think that electronic cigarettes just emit vapor but this is not just the fact as there’s more to it. There are evidences and proofs that this vapor contains detectable levels of toxins as there are several unregulated manufacturers in the market.

Their impact on human health
Unless you’re sure about the ingredients, how can you be sure about the health impacts of e-cigarettes? However, evidence suggests that they are FDA approved and hence safe.
Therefore, if you’re wondering about how the e-cigarette industry is fighting against tobacco usage, you can take into account the above listed facts on e-cigarettes.

Health / What Your Poop Says About Your Health by Atf030: 1:03pm On Aug 25, 2018
What Your Stool Says About Your Health
We all poop. It’s one of the few reminders we get about our health on a daily basis and yet, we don’t pay much attention to it. Not only that, but we also don’t like to talk about it. Here are the things to consider about your stool.
How Often Do You Poop?
The research suggests you should poop every day. In fact, the range of “normal” is typically 1-3 times a day. Poop is waste and you need to get rid of it every single day to make sure that you’re properly removing toxins and other waste material that have to be excreted.
If you find yourself pooping only a couple of times a week, it could be constipation or on the other hand, going 5+ times a day, you could be at risk of health problems like diarrhoea, enteritis, etc
Are You Pushing Too Hard?
How easy is it for you to poop? Are you pushing too Hard? A “normal” poop shouldn’t take but a few minutes. This isn’t childbirth… it should be easy! Pushing typically leads to hemorrhoids.
Normal poops strike a balance between not having to push or strain, but also not having so much urgency you barely can hold it. If you’re spending 10+ minutes on the toilet or running to make it just in time, you’re not having normal bowel movemement.
Is your poop colour the normal brownish colour?
Here is abnormal stool colours;

1. Black stool
If your stool is black in color, it could mean that there is a bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract, most probably in the stomach area. Possible dietary causes might be due to iron supplements, black licorice or even bismuth subsalicylate, an anti-diarrhea medicine known to cause black stools.
2. Green stool
Green stool is an indication that your food might be passing through your intestines too quickly and that the bile does not have enough time to be broken down. Possible causes of this could be too much leafy vegetables or ingesting too much green coloring.
3. Light or white colored stool
If your stool is white in color, it could mean that there is not enough bile produced in your stool and it might indicate that there is a blockage in your bile duct. This might be caused by anti-diarrhea medicine or other medications.
4. Yellow or greasy stool
Yellow and greasy stool and sometimes even foul-smelling can be indicators that there is too much fat in your diet. Or it could also mean that there is a malabsorption disorder which is caused by lactose intolerance, intestinal damage or even celiac disease – which means your body is hypersensitive to gluten, hence resulting in a difficulty to digest food.
