Politics / Re: Will Atiku Get the Boot Soon? by avocat(m): 10:42pm On Aug 29, 2005
kazey, I share your view to an extent, this man may have missed his mortgage repayments in the past, but i doubt that. who knows. i do not know who to trust when it comes to media house news reporting. They always have an agenda. What is an FBI doing in the house of a Nigeria official. I beg let the man finish his term in peace. Whatever he may have done, let him finish his term.
Webmasters / Re: What Do You Appreciate in Websites by avocat(m): 10:41pm On Aug 23, 2005

Religion / Re: Who is your Favorite Popular Pastor or Preacher in Nigeria? by avocat(m): 10:21pm On Aug 23, 2005
i have to vote for my pastor - M. Ashimolowo. I attend his church. I guess he spends more time in Nigeria than in the UK these days. He is currently in the UK at the moment. What i like about him is that, he addresses the issue that a lot of pastors shy away from. eg wealth creation, what to do if you mess up. I like his practical approach. We are holding a conference at the moment. (i will still contiune to comment on every discussion on the forum. catch a later.
Business / Re: Way Forward for Nigeria: Construction of Refineries by avocat(m): 2:23pm On Aug 21, 2005
i agree with you we should consider other sources of revenue but we should not waste the oil resources .
Business / Re: Way Forward for Nigeria: Construction of Refineries by avocat(m): 11:23pm On Aug 20, 2005
someone told me that petroleum can be exploited nearly from every state in Nigeria because the layer of oil runs criss/ cross the country of nigeria in lines running from east to mid west. There are some other minerals that are present wherever there is Oil. Is this true.

Can someone tell me whether the quota of OPEC includes oil derivatives like plastic and other polimers? Because if it does not cover other matters except for crude oil then we are missing out if we do not exploit the oil derivatives further before export.

I know several foreign companies who want to come and build refineries in nigeria for the past 5 years but they have not been given the licence to build. A year ago,(during the petrol riots) there was a refinery at the sea port just awaiting for the licence but it was not issued by the Nigerian government. These people told me that the Government asked them to bid for the right to contruct these refineries and the cost of every bid runs into several million dollars and it does not come with a guarantee that they will get the licence. They obviously refused to place any bid.

the masses or ordinary people of nigeria can form a public company and bring in the refineries (fully owned by the people for the people) if every working nigerian invested N1000.00 each into this company. It is an investment that guarantees a return for as long as there is oil. Why is no one seeing this as a solution? I wish to be enlightened.
Nairaland / General / Re: New Nairaland Features to Attract Your Friends? by avocat(m): 5:50pm On Aug 20, 2005
i do not know whether my friends could be interested in nairaland because i found it by accident, but i have a few suggestion for increasing the membership of nairaland.

1. negotiate a link with the nigerian embassies world wide
2. negotiate to have a link in every entertainment related website that will accept nairaland link
3. distribute literature

i will send email to all my friends about nairaland. that 's a start.
Religion / Re: "I don't believe in God, but I go to church" by avocat(m): 8:37pm On Aug 18, 2005
as a nigerian you cannot help but believe in God. You know, you can put two sentences together in yoruba without mentioning God for example. Oluwa lo se (God performed it) Oloun mo pe (eve God know that ) etc. You cannot be yoruba descendant and not believe in God. I mean you mention God every day. you get my drift.

Business / Re: Lagos State Ferry Corporation by avocat(m): 4:19pm On Aug 18, 2005
Propre,

Are you interested in going into the waterway business. I have been on a similar project for the past four years. I dont know whether you would be interested discussing this problem. i think the waterway is a major source of transportation for lagosians that is worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Travel / Re: What can one do In Lagos? by avocat(m): 3:58pm On Aug 18, 2005
A word of warning - - if you are not familiar with lagos, always go around with a guide. Pay your cousins do be your giude. I'll tell you why.

i would like to share in my experience the first time i returned to nigeria in 1995. i decided to go for a walk on awolowo road in lagos, i was looking for around enjoying the nice weather. I was wearing a those mallam dress. you know long buba (to your ankle) with sokoto. it was new. I had almost reached under the brigde at Ikoyi end when all of a sudden i was confronted by a megad (local gate security man), he accused me of being one of the people that operated in their area, the night before. I told him you must be joking. before i could say jack robertson, he jumped on me and started hitting me and calling a robber. I wa dazed, i saw stars, i tried to defend myself but i was conscious that other megad were already looking outside of their gates and I know they could join in and beat me to pulp. I had to do something as i was aware that innocent people have been burnt alive based on someone calling one a thief. I immediately remembered that i passed a police station while i was walking and i asked him to take me there.

I was gasping for air with all the beating, he agreed to take to the police station on awolowo road. to my surprise, the public buses refused to allow us to board them. I flagged down taxis, some refused to stop, but fortunately one stopped. I paid for the taxi pare. This may held unto my clothing.

When we reached the awolowo road police station, I was about to tell my story, when the police man told me to shut up. He told the megad to tell him what happened. Once the megad finished, I was about to begin my version when a policeman hit me with the butt of his rifle. it was no laughing matter. I was scared. The policeman shouted "empty your pocket". I complied. I received a slap from another policeman.

They would not allow me to narate what happened. Eventually, a God fearing policeman among them pleaded for me to speak. I told my story, how i just came to nigeria and everything but to my surprise, the police kept twisting everything i said. The police took me into the cell, there I saw many people who were being detained. The policeman asked each one of them whether the recognised me. They all said they did not recognise me. The police then said that they would detain me. i asked to use the telephone but they did not have any. I asked if they could go to my parent's house and check out my story, they refused.

The God fearing policeman came to me and asked me intellingent questions, like the flight number, your purpose in Nigeria, when i was returning. After much persuasion, the police decided to let me go. The policeman told me that people who are well dressed like myself do not walk the street, they are driven inside cars. It was scarrrry!

i did not get back home till late at night, everyone had been wandering what happended to me. When i returned to England i suffered panic attacks for several months. I lost my job as a result of the panic attacks.

In conclusion, when going around lagos, always take a guide.

I have returned to nigerian many time since that event and i go out a lot, but i do not go out alone anymore. I always go around in cars. I dont even try to blend in.

a word for the wise.

there are may places of interest like the palmtree resort on the way to badagry. badagry is good for visiting. Lekki is good. Ikoyi club is not bad at all. Sheraton Hotel is expensive but i like their restaurant service. TBS square, the biggest church bulding in the whole world is in Nigeria.

Abuja is trully like Europe. I enjoyed ibadan most. if you have time visit UNiLag, LaSu and enjoy the parties.

Jobs/Vacancies / He Speaks Five European languages and is a Lawyer by avocat(m): 2:24pm On Aug 16, 2005
My friend says he is considering returning to nigeria from europe. can anyone recommend my friend to a suitable employer in Nigeria. He wants to work in nigeria with these abilities. He would prefer companies that really need a lawyer and his languages skills. I recommeded he spoke with the foreign embassies in nigeria, he says he has no contacts. I recommended that he work for the nigerian external affairs, he says he does not have any contacts there either . I recommended that he act as agent for nigerian businessmen, marketing their products in Europe. again he said he does know any business man in nigeria.

Can anyone help him
does any have a solution to his dilema?
Business / Re: National ID Card to Become Credit Card? by avocat(m): 8:01pm On Aug 15, 2005
let us not be quick to criticise our leaders, sometimes we have to help them develop their ideas and not tear it down. The idea that if it was you, you will do a better job is false. Let is look beyond the momentary and think of our children and their children. What kind of Nigeria are we going to leave for them.

if the certainty of some financial credit was attached to national id card, every nigerian will register. I mean overnight.

what do you think
Business / Re: National ID Card to Become Credit Card? by avocat(m): 7:52pm On Aug 15, 2005
let us not be too quick to rubbish the idea. let us examine the advantages of a credit card / identity card:

1. There is availability of long term credit to rich and poor people with credit limits that are determined by credit and financial agencies.

2. If you got stuck in an isolated place in nigeria in the middle of the night, which is probable if your vehicle broke down in the evening and you found no one to help you. You card may well guarantee services which you can pay for in credit terms. (now dont tell me it cannot work because, you can buy mobile phone credits at midnight and use them, so it can work.)

3. Every country has to entice its citizen to voluntarily submit its data to the government for security reason. Britain does this through the national insurance number, Australia does this through the health card, America does this through the social security number. In all these countries, you cannot open a bank account or apply for a credit card without providing the national insurance number (in britain), social security number(in america) and national health card number(in australia). Nigeria will only make it easier by combining both in a national bank for example. (leaving it open to the individual to move his credit to another credit or finance house). You can have as many card as you want provided that you national identity card number remains the same.

4. There reason why the housing and real estate market is so unreliable is partly because, banks are afraid to give long term loan. People do not have individual idenfier numbers.

5. We can critize the Us for the social security number and the britain for the national insurance number but they are reliable for distinguishing two people with the same name and the same date of birth

6. In Australia, health was the most respected thing by its citizen, so the government created a health card with an individual number (valid from birth to the grave), in America, its citizens are crazy about retirement and pension, so its government created a social security system which gives each person an individual number (again valid from crade to grave), in Britain its people are also overly concerned about pension fund and retirement that its government in the 80s introduced the nationa insurance number system for its citizens. All this schemes are not reliable in themselves for either health provision or retirement funds but the government used as a bait to capture data from its citizens.

7. In case of an accident, your card (if it has insurance from the credit provider) will ensure that every doctor will be eager to treat you and help you. Unlike the position now that the doctor will wait for your relatives. by the time your relatives arrive it may be too late to save you.

8. Each bank will now have to compete for the business of individual citizens of Nigeria because they know that if they have your allegiance from birth, for the next seventy five years, they can manage your money.
