Springs of Joy Foundation storms Ogun, Lagos, launches medical, food support for widows

In furtherance of her activities geared towards affecting lives of the indigents, with special emphasis on widows, the Spring of Joy for Widows Foundation has once again spread its wings of kindness and passion to the widows of Nigeria.

This was a follow-up to its earlier reach out conducted in May 2024 where over 250 widows were presented with food items in an event tagged Food Pantry and Medical Checkup for Widows.

In August 2024, the United States of America based Founder of the Foundation, Mrs Anastasia Daniel, in company of her husband, stormed some nooks and crannies of the nation with bags of smiles and hope for widows following a well attended launch of the Foundation in Surulere, Lagos.

Earlier in the year, at a well organized event held at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Christ Disciples Parish, Surulere, Lagos, which the Resident Pastor, Richard Umoren, graciously gave out, the Foundation released diverse and assorted food items to deserving widows, as well as conducted free medical checkups to ascertain the state of the health of the widows, using the best of medical personnels, drawn from the Christian Medical and Dental Association, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) chapter.

Kickstarting the avalanche of humanitarian efforts, Mrs Daniel and her team of Spring of Joy for Widows Foundation caregivers embarked on several impactful events to support widows in different parts of Nigeria, thereby furthering its mission of empowerment and care.

At a Food Pantry Event held at Ilogbo, Ogun State, the foundation conducted a food distribution event, where 133 widows were empowered.

According to Mrs Daniel, who consistently told her story of growing up with her widowed mother, each widow received essential food items, including rice, beans, garri, noodles and bags of sachet water.

"This initiative was aimed at addressing the immediate food needs of the widows and providing them with a sense of relief and support during these challenging times," Mrs. Daniel said.

At the official launch of the Foundation, which was juxtaposed with a Fundraising ceremony in Surulere, Lagos, with about 100 guests in attendance, Mrs. Daniel assured stakeholders and guests of her Foundation's readiness to spread good tidings to as many Nigerians in need as possible, maintaining that the day was specially designed to raise awareness about the foundation's cause and generate financial support for its ongoing and future initiatives.

The event drew together notable television personalities, founders of other organizations, and influential individuals, giving it a high-profile status.

As a followup to the Launch, the Foundation also undertook a Food Pantry Event at the Assemblies of God Church, Coker Orile, Lagos, where a remarkable 310 widows received free food items, ranging from rice, beans, garri, spaghetti, to bags of sachet water. Each widow present at the event received a generous helping of all the items. This event further extended the foundation's reach, ensuring that more widows received the support they needed.

Mrs Daniel said she established the foundation to empower and uplift widows by providing them with basic necessities, emotional support, and opportunities for a better future.

She added that through these empowerment events, the foundation aims to ease the burden of widowhood, provide food security, and foster a sense of community and belonging among widows.

"Each initiative is a step towards achieving a long-term empowerment opportunity for widows, ensuring they have the resources and support to lead dignified lives."

Crime / Murder: APC Chieftain Raises Alarm Over Lagos Ag's Approval Of Plea Bargain Fo by ayuskenke: 9:47pm On Oct 17
Murder: APC chieftain raises alarm over Lagos AG's approval of plea bargain for murder suspects

A petitioner in a murder case who is also a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Ijede Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Lagos, Oluwatosin Onamade has raised alarm over alleged approval of plea bargain by the Attorney-General of Lagos State, Lawal Pedro, for murder suspects

The murder suspects, namely: Atunrase Sodiq Omolabi ‘M’ 28 years, Shittu Michael Olawale ‘M’ 28 years, Olaide Opeifa ‘M’ 40′ years, Olanrewaju Adebiyi aka Maja ‘M’ 35 years and Jamiu Omosanya aka Orobo, are being prosecuted by the Lagos State Government on seven count charge of murder, attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, willful damage to property, unlawful society (cultism), breach of peace and conspiracy to commit felony.

They were accused of murdering one Ifeanyi Godfrey Etunmuse at Western Funeral Home, Ijede Ikorodu, a company which belongs to the petitioner, Onamade.

The incident occurred on April 16, 2021, during the build-up to the local government election in Lagos, in which Onamade contested for the post of the Chairman of Ijede Local Council Development Area.

The suspects had pleaded not guilty to the offence.

Witnesses during the ongoing trial before the trial judge, Justice Hakeem Oshodi of Lagos State High Court has narrated how the accused murdered the victim in the build-up to the local government election.

The court had also been shown the video recorded by a CCTV camera revealing how the suspects allegedly attacked the defendant in his office and murdered Ifeanyi who was his personal assistant in his office in Ijede, Ikorodu.

However, a new twist to the trial came when the Lagos State Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro allegedly approved a plea bargain for the suspects as against death sentence or life imprisonment as stated by the law.

The agreement between the prosecuting team, the Lagos AG and the suspects was communicated to the petitioner by the prosecuting lawyer, Michael Adewoye ahead of the continuation of trial coming up on October 23.

In the message ,the prosecutor stated that ' the AG has approved 20-years imprisonment for all.the defendants. The plea bargain committee will write a letter to that effect to their lawyer to know if that is acceptable or not so that we can continue with the trial. That is the position."

Reacting, the petitioner faulted the AG's decision saying a murder charge attracts life imprisonment or death sentence.

"After compromising with the accused, they want to give them 20-years for all the seven charges," he alleged.

However, in his response to the allegation following a message sent to him to confirm if the prosecution team had been compromised by the accused persons, the prosecuting counsel, Michael Adewoye denied allegations of compromise leveled against him and the AG.

" Thanks my brother, my DPP has called me about the position of the matter and l have explained it to him. First and foremost I am not allowed to grant interviews to the press, any allegation or petition must be addressed to the AG.

Be that as it may, on the issue of allegation of money ,it is said that he who alleges must prove. Let him come up with facts and figures to substantiate it otherwise, l will take it up with him. Secondly, the matter is a part heard in which the prosecution had called four witnesses. The counsel to the four of the defendants brought an application for plea of bargain which is allowed by virtue of Section 75 & 76 of ACJL.

The plea bargain committee sat on it, made their recommendation to the AG and Hon Attorney-General approved a jail term of 20-years. The nominal complainant queried the approval and threatened to go to the press,' Adewoye said.

Crime / Murder: Court Discharge, Acquits Onamade Of Cybercrime Allegation By Ex-ijede C by ayuskenke: 1:35pm On Jul 05
Murder: Court discharge, acquits Onamade of cybercrime allegation by ex-Ijede council boss

Justice Olayinka Faaji of the Federal High High Court, Lagos, on Friday discharged and acquitted Ikorodu based chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC and owner of Western Funeral Home, Ijede, Oluwatosin Onamade of cybercrime charge filed against him by the former chairman of Ijede LCDA, Fatiu Jimoh Salisu

The court acquitted Onamade of two counts charge of cybercrime brought against him by Fatiu who had accused Onamade of accusing him of being the mastermind of the murder of Godfrey Ifeanyi, a staff of Western Funeral Home in 2021 in the build up to the local government primary elections in which Fatiu was seeking a second term in office and Onamade was a contestant.

Ifeanyi was murdered after some thugs allegedly hired by Fatiu invaded Onamade's office and attacked his staff.

Fatiu, in the charge before the Federal High Court claimed that Onamade committed cybercrime by circulating his name on various Whatsapp groups accusing him of being responsible for the murder of Ifeanyi thereby tarnishing his inage.

He had also claim Onamade granted a media interview where he mentioned his name as the sponsor of the attack.

He further claimed the allegation prevented him from getting his party's ticket for a second term in office as council chairman which has affected his political career.

The charge read ' that you, Oluwatosin Onamade 'M', sometime in May 2021 in Lagos within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court did commit, an illegal act to wit; intentionally circulating a grossly offensive publication through your
Facebook/Instagram handle which you knew to be false, for the purpose of
causing insult to one Hon. Fatiu Salisu, ljede LCDA Chairman by accusing him
of the murder of late Tony Godfrey, you thereby committed an offence
punishable under section 24 of the Cyber Crimes Act, 2015.”

Count 2 of the charge also read " that you, Oluwatosin Onamade 'M', sometime in May 2021 in Lagos within
the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court knowingly caused the transmission
of communication through your WhatsApp to harass one Hon. Fatiu Salisu,
ljede LCDA Chairman by falsely alleging that he sponsored the attack at
Western Funeral Home Limited office and murder of late Tony Godfrey, you
thereby committed an offence punishable under section 24(2)(a) of the
Cybercrimes Act, 2015.”

During trial, the prosecuton counsel, Omotayo Olatubosun called two witnesses. The first witness, a Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP, Omaka Udodinma told the court that a petiton was forwarded to his team for investigation by the then Inspector General of Police, IGP, from the office of former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola.

He said his team invited Salisu, to explain the rationale behind the petition after which the investigating team proceeded to Lagos to arrest the defendant, Onamade for questioning.

The witness said Onamade was asked to retract the statement accusing Fatiu of being mastermind of the attack or provide evidence backing his claim, adding that the team received a compact disc showing the defendant accusing the petitioner of his involvement in the incident.

He added that Onamade told the team that on the day of the attack, he saw Fatiu in an unregistered Toyota RAV 4 Jeep in company of the assailants who attacked him in his office.

He mentioned evidences provided by Onamade to the investigating team to include two Closed Circuit Television, CCTV CDs containing footage of the attack, as well as a copy of press release by a group, Concerned Residents of Ijede, claiming Fatiu was not competent to contest in the election because of his alleged mis-governance in his first tenure.

Under cross examination by the defendant's counsel,Adedayo Osijo, Udodinma admitted that his team did not investigate all the suspects arrested in connection with the murder namely Farouq Fasasi, Gbolahan Olubi, Owolabi Sadiq, Shittu Michael Olawale and Olayide Opeifa to ascertain if the allegations against Fatiu were true.

Osijo further asked the witness how his investigating team arrived at its conclusion that Onamade's allegation against the petitioner was a defamation of his character since the team failed to investigate the suspects.

Fatiu, who was the second witness presented before the court a supposedly printed chats in a Whatsapp group where he claimed Onamade accused him of the offense.

In his argument before the court, Osijo said that the prosecution failed to provide concrete evidence that Onamade committed the offense of cyber crime and bullying. He thereafter filed a no-case submission..

In his submission, the counsel sought for 'an order of the court discharging the defendant from the offences in Counts 1 and 2 of the Charge dated 18th November 2021 and for such order this honourable court may deem fit to make in the circumstance of this case.'

He based his submission on the grounds that the 'prosecution did not lead evidence to establish and/or show the
existence of the essential elements of the alleged offence preferred against
defendant in Counts 1 and 2 of the charge dated 18th November 2021 neither did the prosecution lead evidence to link the defendant to the offence allegedly committed.'

He further noted in his submission that
the evidence presented by the prosecution is so 'manifestly unreliable that this Honourable Court cannot rely on it to convict the defendant,' adding that the prosecution has not shown that the defendant has any case to answer
with respect to the offences charged in all the counts of Charge.'

Osijo argued it would be in the interest of justice to grant this application and acquit Onamade of the charges.

In his ruling, Justice Faaji ruled that the prosecution failed to prove its allegations against Onamade.

The court noted that evidence presented by the prosecution did not show Onamade made such allegations and circulated them on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter(now X) as there was no evidence they were found on such social media platforms which would have supported the allegation of cybercrime.

It further noted that the alleged Whatsapp group chats did not show Onamade's telephone number to suggest he was responsible for the circulation of the allegation.

The judge further ruled the first prosecution witness failed to conduct thorough investigations into the matter.

Justice Faaji noted that the two counts carry a punishment of 10 and 3 years imprisonment each if convicted or a fine of N7million and N25million each respectively.

The court therefore discharged and acquitted Onamade of all the charges.

The murder suspects;
Olanrewaju Adebiyi a.k.a Maja, Atunrase Sodiq, Shittu Michael Olawale, Olaide Opeifa A.K.A. Ote and Jamiu Omosanya A.K.A. Orobo are resently standing trial for murder before Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja.

Religion / Rumble, Turbulence In The Anglican Church: The Nigerian Factor Of Conspiracy In by ayuskenke: 11:26pm On Jan 15
Rumble, Turbulence in The Anglican Church: The Nigerian Factor of Conspiracy in Evangelism

By Hon Femi Kehinde

Anglicanism is a church rooted in protest. It was founded in 1534 by king Henry VIII’s Act of Supremacy, which pronounced the church of England independent of the Catholic Church in Rome.

The first phase of the Anglican Reformation (1531-1547) began over a personal dispute when King Henry VIII of England was denied Papal support for the annulling of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon.

Today, the Anglican Church consists of more than 86 million members worldwide in over 165 countries. Collectively, these national churches are known as the Anglican Communion, meaning all are in communion with and recognize the leadership of the Archbishop of Canterbury. In the United States, the American church of the Anglican Communion is called the Protestant Episcopal Church, or simply the Episcopal Church. In most of the rest of the world, it is called Anglican.

Samuel Ajayi Crowther (1809 – 31st December 1891) was a clergyman, and the first African Anglican Bishop of West Africa, he also translated the English bible to Yoruba Language in 1843. He was also, a pathfinder that brought in the Anglican church and placed it on firm ground in Nigeria. He was born with the name Ajayi in Osogun, near Oyo in present day Oyo state, Nigeria. On a certain morning, his native town of Osogun was surprised and overwhelmed by slave captors. Crowther and his compatriots fled but “were seized by the enemies with a noose of rope thrown over the neck of every individual to be led in the manner of goats tied together.” In Crowther’s gripping narration, “a family was violently divided between three or four enemies who each led his preys away to see one another no more.”

On that tragic morning, the last view Crowther had of his “unhappy, comfortless father” was when he came to give his family the signal to flee.

Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the slave boy who became the first African bishop of the Anglican Church, was guided by the hand of God which turned the tragedy of violent enslavement into an immeasurable blessing. In those harsh days of mindless savagery, men were displayed as merchandise in slave markets, tied and manacled, and exported to distant lands.

Crowther was an embodiment of a true Christian, a servant of God and His gospel, for even as bishop, he was constantly marked out for detraction; but he took it all in his stride.

In 1864, Crowther was ordained as the first African bishop of the Anglican Church; he was consecrated a Bishop on St. Peter’s Day in 1864, by Charles Longley, Archbishop of Canterbury, at Canterbury Cathedral, England. By 1857 the CMS was fully engaged in Nigeria and a diocese in 1864 with the consecration of Samuel Ajayi Crowther as the first diocesan Bishop.

Anglican faithful residing in North America took the Anglican faiths and models of practice and worship to America with the usual Nigeria rumbles and tumbles. The Church of Nigeria Anglican communion, is the second-largest province in the Anglican Communion worldwide, as measured by baptized memberships, after the Church of England. As of 2016, its membership has “over 18 million”, out of a total Nigerian population of almost 200 million.

Since 2002, the Church of Nigeria has been organized into 14 Ecclesiastical Provinces. It has rapidly increased the number of its dioceses and bishops from 91 in 2002 to 161 as at January 2013; and has certainly increased exponentially from that number. The administrative headquarters is located in Abuja, Capital of Nigeria. Archbishop Henry Ndukuba became its Primate in 2020 succeeding Archbishop Nicholas Okoh.

However, the acquit rumbles and tumbles in the Anglican church in America has brought in despair, disdain, anguish and bewilderment to the entire members of a fully incorporated diocese – Anglican Diocese of the Trinity (ADOTT) in North America.

The Anglican diocese of the Trinity (ADOTT) that had existed for well over 10 years was dissolved by fiat and reduced to the status of a Mission by His Grace, Archbishop Henry C. Ndukuba, Archbishop, Metropolitan and primate of the church of Nigeria. The announcement of the dissolution of the Anglican Diocese of the Trinity (ADOTT) by fiat at the Church of Nigeria (CON) general Synod held in Nnewi in September 2023 after eleven years of the ADOTT diocese existence cut the entire members of Anglican Diocese of the Trinity (ADOTT) in America completely off guard and flustered.

According to the elders, Laity, Diocesan members of Anglican Diocese of the Trinity (ADOTT) in their letter of protest dated 23rd October 2023 said, “As a diocese that was duly incorporated in America, we should have been consulted by the Primate before the General Synod, even if that decision was to be taken to the general house. The General Synod of the Church of Nigeria and discussion of the issue should have been after our own deliberations, which was not what happened. Perhaps the most egregious and disturbing part of this saga was that just before the General Synod a few highly placed clerics here in North America, who were privy to this premeditated conversation, boasted openly that once the Nnewi meeting was concluded, there would be no ADOTT Diocese! True to it, the Primate announced the dissolution of ADOTT without due consultation with members of this Diocese, particularly the House of laity.

These remarks before the meeting suggest that deliberation was not a part of the proceedings; a final decision had already been made unilaterally, and the announcement reflected a process that is unfair to the rank and file of our membership. It is also noticeable that while the General Synod in its wisdom gave a period until February 2024 in their recommendation for this dissolution, the Primate, in a hurry, dissolved the Diocesan Board, which has paralyzed its functions, while people here in North America were still pondering what the proposed dissolution would mean for them, their faith community, and their families.

It is indeed a sharp sword because the Primate waited for the commencement of the three-day women’s conference to make his announcement, a conference for which they had prepared for months but was brought to an abrupt end. This of course expectedly was followed by heart-felt sorrow of women and mothers at the conference who did not understand this shocking pronouncement, and chaos ensued.”

The elders of ADOTT further said, “As a result of the dissolution, the Primate now began to give orders from the secretariat in Abuja to individual Clergy and Rectors and instructed them to act without the consent of their Diocesan Bishop. It was very disturbing to see the wife of the bishop and convenor of the Women’s Conference was almost forbidden from entering the Cathedral because of the order from above. While we recognize that politics and faith have been inextricably linked in our society, this action is antithetical to the governance of the Anglican Church. It is an unprecedented move.”

According to the elders, “We were thriving as a Diocese and the joyous celebration of our tenth-year anniversary showed our strength and success. Our book titled Anglican Diocese of the Trinity: – Formation and Building of a Church of Nigeria Mission’ clearly illustrated our history and God’s benevolence and grace in the mission of the church.

“The last Primate, His Grace Archbishop Nicholas Okoh, who paid several visits to us, was very understanding and supportive of our status, presence, and our growth in North America so much that on his retirement, he was recognized at a big reception by all of us hosted in Harvard where he was accorded the respect and honor that are normally given to a Head of state.

“The question then is why this letter to the House of Bishops and the Nigerian Anglican faithful? First, there is no record in the history of the Anglican Church in Nigeria or any part of the world where a well instituted and thriving Diocese would be suddenly disbanded and reduced to mission stations. As if with a military fiat without recalls to all democratic norms and practices and global best practices. The motive of the white-controlled Anglican Church that has always sworn to see us kicked out of America except we come under their authority and control, is the key to this crisis. As American/Canadian citizens, this runs contrary to the law of the land that fully guarantees freedom of worship to all.

Second, by our faith, we believe in the word of God that says that God himself will not allow his community to meet in error. Therefore, we know that our diocese was not created in error, as we know that God does not make mistakes. On the contrary, we believe as true Anglicans that our Diocese was created in response to genuine cry for justice and freedom.

On May 31, 2020, Prof. Jacob Olupona penned a letter to His Grace outlining the serious concerns our community has had with Archbishop Foley Beach, the prejudicial way he has treated and spoken about our community, and how he and ACNA (Anglican Church of North America) have no right under US law to influence how our internal church affairs are run. The letter further stressed the importance of our status as a diocese, so it is important that all should know we have been deeply involved in this issue for many years and have attempted as much as possible to be active participants in the process.

Since we have made it clear that our status as a diocese particularly independent of the ACNA (Anglican Church of North America) is of the utmost importance to us and that we have well-organized thoughts and experience on the matter, we are hurt and troubled by the fact that we were never consulted about this decision.

To our surprise, our clergy have been ordered to provide a statement of their Assets; assets which through our commitment, hard work and faithfulness, we contributed to the coffers of the Church without receiving or asking for any financial support from the Church of Nigeria. We give glory to God for the passion of the Late Rt. Revd. Dr. Peter Adebiyi of blessed memory, pioneer Diocesan of Lagos West (DLW), regarded as a renegade, who was determined to see the survival of our mission. Through him, DLW rendered considerable help to the pioneering Diocesan Bishop of ADOTT in the early years and partly to All Saints Anglican Church, Hyattsville during their building project in 2010.

The elders of ADOTT further noted that “It is worth mentioning that the appointment of Bishop Felix Orji as Supervising Bishop of ADOTT was a deep trauma to the diocese. This caused an unimaginable divide among the suffragan bishops and clergy! We are not aware of any other diocese where a diocese is left so shattered before the election of another diocesan, in the history of our Church. Of course, the Primate’s relationship with Bishop Orji was very tight until recently when things fell apart. Bishop Orji left the Church of Nigeria completely and joined ACNA (Anglican Church of North America), where he had always wanted to drag the rest of us to.

On July 24, 2021, the Primate came to Indianapolis, which is the headquarters here, to address the Church and he made a promise and said publicly that no diocese would be dissolved. He also said publicly and stated in clear terms that our diocese would not be joined with another diocese. What has now transpired runs contrary to his promise.”

The elders of ADOTT, further bewildered by the primate action said, “As we try to call the attention of a few Anglican Church leaders in Nigeria to this crisis, one thing that was clear from our conversations was that the Primate has not listened to anyone, but we hope he listens to God’s still, small voice and counsel to allow us to continue the good work He has begun in us.”

We are hoping that the House of Bishops and those who matter in the Anglican Church will put a stop to these happenings to prevent further escalation. We, as elders in the Anglican Church, are men and women of peace who believe in the integrity and freedom to practice in our sacred faith tradition. No number of abusive notes we have been receiving from the agents of the Church of Nigeria in North America, will dissuade us from the path of truth and justice, as outlined by our faith.

We also believe it is important for us to consider the issue of precedence. If the Church of Nigeria were to bow to external pressure regarding how our ecclesiastical structure is established, it does not hold well for our global missions and operations. We do not believe the House of Bishops of the Church of Nigeria would want to send the message that parishioners and congregants may, at any time, be subjected to ecclesiastical authority that they do not appreciate or of which they do not approve, although this is certainly the message that we have received.

We are troubled by the precedent set of a complete lack of consideration or dialogue of any kind before sweeping measures with massive implications for the clergy and laity alike are taken. If we are not careful, such precedent may undermine our ability to function as an effective mission and draw people away from our churches. Instead, we humbly request, that a precedent be set of clear, respectful, and honest communication in which the perspectives, experiences, and concerns of all in our diocese are taken seriously to inform a decision taken in everyone’s best interest, as we have previously come to expect from a venerable institution such as the Church of Nigeria.

This letter was signed on behalf of the Anglican Diocese of the Trinity (ADOTT) North America by some of His elders – Sir Festus Obafemi – Ajayi, Dame Dorcas Imasuen, Prof. J.K. Olupona, Folashade Awoola and David Oladele.

It is apparent that the bedrock of this crisis is rooted in financial evangelism and the church of Nigeria having not been financially responsible to the operation of Anglican diocese of the Trinity (ADOTT) North America, should allow ADOTT to stand, flourish and nourish in preaching the gospel of Christ through Anglicanism and continue to play a supportive role for its mother church – The Anglican church of Nigeria without fear of undue pressure, unjustifiable crisis and intimidation.

In fondest memories of the valiant and gallant effort of Anglican Bishops, Clergymen and Pathfinders of Anglicanism in Nigeria – Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther and the 4 subsequent Bishops after him; Bishop James Johnson, Bishop Phillips, Bishop Oluwole, Bishop Tugwell (who made peace with the Delta Pastorate and reconciled them with the CMS in 1898), Archdeacon Dandeson Crowther (son of Samuel Ajayi Crowther), Rev. David Hinderer, Rev. James Johnson, Rev. Henry Townsend, Rev. Thomas Davey, Rev. T. B. Macaulay, Archbishop Vining, Archbishop Akinola, Archdeacon H. Johnson, Bishop Alexander Babatunde Akinyele, Rev. J. J. Ransome Kuti, Bishop Timothy Omotayo Olufosoye, Bishop Scot, Bishop Odutola, Archdeacon Emmanuel Alayande, Bishop Seth Runshewe Kale, Archbishop Abiodun Adetiloye, Archdeacon Micheal Olupona, Bishop Awosan, Rev J. M. S. Adejumo, Canon Ogunbanjo, Canon Olunloyo and so many others would applaud in their graves, if the general synod of the Anglican Communion coming up on the 24th of February 2024 would revisit its Nnewi decision of September 2023 synod by allowing the Anglican Diocese of the Trinity (ADOTT) North America to stand with its full diocesan status in the spirit of Christ, Anglicanism and Evangelism. The general synod will certainly lose nothing by doing so.

Guber poll: Lagos APC LG aspirants threaten showdown over party's failure to refund chairmanship fees

Local government chairmanship aspirants under the All Progressives Congress, APC, at the 2021 local government chairmanship election in Lagos State have threatened showdown with the party in the state over the party's failure to refund their money used in purchasing the chairmanship aspirant forms.

The crisis is coming in a few days to the governorship election which comes up on March 11 this year.

The 174 aggrieved aspirants said having paid over N2 million each to purchase the form, they were edged out by the party leaders in the state as those who didn't buy the form were allowed to contest and won the election.

Some of them who spoke with The Nigerian Xpress Newspaper said the party promised to refund their money but two years later have failed to fulfill it's promise

They also said while aspirants into the national House of Assembly as well as the councilors have been refunded their money, they are yet to get their money back.

" Our problem within the party started after the concocted local government primaries that were historically highly contested with large numbers of aspirants, mainly youth.

The leadership in Lagos noted there were discrepancies so they removed the former chairman, Alhaji Balogun but failed to pacify members of the party especially those that purchased forms.

To now rob salt on the sore, people who lost at primaries for state and national assembly positions were refunded. Seating councilors and immediate past councilors were given N1million each while 2021 aspirants that made payment to state covers were left out after being robbed of the electoral process.

While we pledged our continued loyalty to the party and the assurance to work tediously for the re-election of our governor, I will also advise our governor to immediately refund and pay the 2021 Chairmanship aspirants back their money and also ensure all councilorship aspirants within same period are refunded,"said Honourable Niyikun, one of the aggrieved members.

Also reacting, another aggrieved member, Hon. Wale Shibi said: " We had meeting at the party Secretariat in Acme, Ikeja , with the former Vice Chairman, Hon ibirogba, and we tabled our grievances and the agreement reached with the party chairman who promised our money will be refunded a week after the presidential election.

The incumbent Vice Chairman Hon. Maiyegun told us, he wasn't aware of the agreement, but he heard about us and said the governor will pay us. but we need to exercise patience and later said he will discuss the matter with Mr Governor. He also said we should be hopeful as the money will be paid hopefully before the next election on March 11,2023. but till now we didn't see anything."

Hon. Kunle Ogunlade, another member of the aggrieved aspirants said the leadership of the party in the state is not alive to its responsibilities.

'The truth might be bitter. Our party slept on their bed the way they laid it and woke up accordingly Is it not the governor that selected the LGA Chairmen without due process? Many of them are people not accepted by the majority of the people in their LGA’s including the party members. Many of the LGA Chairmen are not taking care of the party members and have turned themselves to God and above the party. They have disenfranchised many party members.Like i said the governor is benefiting from his handwork.

We the aspirants that the majority accepted are the ones now begging the governor and the party leaders to accept us and consider us.We are even begging for our money they took unjustly. With all the bad treatments meted out on the majority of us we still stand by the party. On the day of the election I moved around from polling unit to polling unit spending the little change I have to entertain and encourage people while the LGA chairmen stayed in their offices.

We keep showing love but God of justice will judge everybody. Most of us are party faithful and have no other place to go.So they are capitalizing on that but God of justice is watching.Let them increase the dollars given to the above mentioned people maybe they will do better. All this is aside millions given to leaders in each LGA’s for the election that did not get to the people.God will see us through. We will keep fighting because we can not afford to let Lagos get to the hands of another party. We have become a slave of circumstances," he lamented.

One Hon. Abiodun also said : " While we were showing understanding with the party and governor to refund our monies after the presidential elections, the governor paid out $10,000 each to the unpopular imposed council chairmen, commissioners and others to do mobilization for the election which they pocketed without doing anything.

One gets demoralized when you get such information on an election you went all out for including spending one's personal money. Let them talk about our refund first, otherwise I will move nowhere for no kind of mobilization."

Also in his reaction, Hon. Oluwatosin Onamade, who contested for Ijede Local government chairmanship said: " Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is a gentleman of worth and dignity, an uncommonly humane and modest person, who says and makes it a reality.
I will personally be voting for Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the March 11th governorship elections but cooperation of all former chairmanship aspirants is needed.

How many elderly people or traditional elders did we see on the last day of presidential election voting? We are pleading with the governor and the executive management of our great party in Lagos state to fulfill their promises on the refund before 11th March 2023. We believe that teamwork is very important in the coming election and it shall end in praise.

(OPINION)
AND THE BATON CHANGES…
A Nation in Search of a Fulfilled Future Goes to the Polls
Emiko Aruofor.

Come February 25, 2023, the Nigerian nation will activate the largest democratic process ever embarked upon on the African continent. 93.5 million eligible voters will have the right on that day, and for several weeks after, to go out and choose the deciders and directors of our future. This quadrennial pilgrimage to the polls has been entrenched and consistently embarked upon six times since the re-establishment of the third republic in 1999. The inalienable implication of this reality is that we, as a people cannot in truth distance ourselves from the choices we had willfully made for good or for bad, for progress or setback every time in the past 24 years that we have gone to the ballot box and imprinted our thumb to install the next habitués of our political and in fact, existential institutions; the legislative arms, from the Senate, the House of Representatives through to the State Assemblies; formulators and guardians of our constitution and the overarching supervisors of the executive arm of governance, from the President, to the State Governors and Local Government Chairpersons, all the way to the minutest Wards.

For us to evaluate where we’re at and where we should be heading to, it would be good to look at our place in the world vis a vis our peculiar circumstances. Nigeria is one of 96 acknowledged democracies out of the 195 countries on the globe. We are a country of the future, as over 70% of our population are youths and a great percentage of them are entitled to vote this time around. About 78% of our people are literate, which to all intent and purposes should serve us well in taking the right decisions. Overall, if you look at the pluses, such as an oil-backed economy, bountiful agriculture and a dynamic, broad-based workforce, we should be the envy of any other country on the continent. From the three regions inherited at independence in 1960, we have grown to a federation of 36 self governing states as well as the federal capital in Abuja. This diversification of governance was supposed to engender a focused, grassroots-oriented administration across the broad swathes of our society. Unfortunately, 109 years after the installation of the Nigeria experiment, we are not confident to espouse any indication that we are on the right path, as sadly, we are in far from celebratory shape.

As the sunset closes on another eight years of a duly elected set of leaders, the circumstances of our lives beggars the question; what and how is anything different this time around?

If we view our present form of government from its Greek background of people (demo) and rule (krato) there is a clear understanding that democracy is, as succinctly presented by Abraham Lincoln in his post-American civil war Gettysburg address, “the government of the people, for the people, by the people”. It follows that we have always been expected to elect representatives across all tiers of government that would come into office for the purpose of attending to our needs with a determination to deliver on our expectations. In other words, we vote to achieve a better life for ourselves, our families and by extension, the society as a whole.

To determine if our democratic efforts have yielded ‘fruit’, it would be worthwhile to compare the experiences of this iteration of our political dispensation with what had come earlier. The almost one hundred years of colonial overlords were definitely not intended to serve us. It was a period of ruler takes all and devoted to the relentless extraction of everything of value. But, in the process of harnessing the resources required by the British, the North and South provinces were linked to create our present status. Rail lines stretched from the coastal ports to the farthest reaches of the Sahel to evacuate the goodies of the land. Our grandparents were educated as produce buyers and tally clerks and found abode, comfort and acceptance in areas far from their places of origin. By the time we became a self-fulfilling republic in 1963, it was a given that you could and would holiday with family and friends in far off regions of the country, particularly railway men, the police, teachers and nurses. The ‘oyinbos’ left three highly productive regions, but, they also left behind grinding poverty in the hinterlands. The short lived first republic embarked on the entrenchment of our people in the pursuit of governmental relevance. The nouveau politicians played to the citizens’ yearnings, spinning tales of grandiose expectations and limitless promises. The results of the cleavage to our perceived cohesion and fragile unity soon brought in the militarisation of our existence.

Since we are comparing phases of our lives, the long reign of the ‘military industrial complex’ would bring the creation of first, twelve states and later thirty six states with a geographically central federal administration in Abuja. The intention was to allow for the actualisation of governance depth at the minutest level of society. Rather than the grandiosity of just Lagos, Ibadan, Enugu and Kano, at least 36 state capitals now actualise the wishes of the people around them, or are supposed to. Unfortunately, rather than the economically independent regions of yore, many of these politically carved out states are not self-sustaining and most would stagnate and go into paralysis without quarterly federal largesse funded mostly from oil money.

The years of democracy have sadly not built on the original idea of bringing a sense of belonging to every man, woman and child. In place of a single universal ideal of a Nigerian nation, balkanisation has driven a wedge between previous hegemonies. The stark absence of final mile presence of governance beyond the state capitals has left the rural environments where most Nigerians live in the hands of militias, brigands and other rent seekers pitilessly haranguing and sometimes displacing whole communities. All of these would be bearable if at least, people could feed and have the semblance of a manageable existence. But, when the continued evisceration of the worth of the Naira is added to the existing devastation of the quality of life, we find ourselves at the crossroads. Do we turn back to times better not remembered? Do we lay down and bear the weight of our diminished circumstances? Or do we look forward to a more glorious future and step into the promise and fulfilment of our admirable potentials?

The answer as they say, lies in our hands, or should we say, our thumbs. As we step out on February 25 and the weeks after to express our democratic right to choose who to hand over the baton of the future of ourselves, our children and unborn generations to, would we, as has happened in the past, bequeath our very existence to those who would dig us further into the gruelling abyss of the present times? or do we have a rethink and embark on a rebirth of our dear nation by electing only those whose thinking and orientation is aligned to our yearnings for peace, progress and the universal pursuit of happiness.

The answer lies in that little sheet…the PVC and what we do with it.

Alimosho Food Festival excites stakeholders, urge govt to tackle inflation

Stakeholders at the first edition of Alimosho Food Festival were full of excitement at the debut of the event, and called on the government to solve rising inflation in the country and tackle food shortages.

The festival was held on Saturday, Jan 28, at the Youth Centre, Abesan, Lagos.

The stakeholders lamented high rate of poverty in the country and called for urgent measures from govt.

Mr Lawal Isiaka, the Chairman Sunquest Discovery Limited, the organisers of the festival, who spoke on the reason behind the event said the festival was organised to give opportunities to food vendors to showcase their products as well as allow consumers to purchase food at cheaper prices against the high cost in the market.

According to him, Alimosho is the largest local government in Lagos State, and was chosen because of its high population as it would afford more people the opportunity to benefit from the event.

Lawal lamented that high cost of food as well as food shortages have become a menace in Nigeria which should be addressed by the government. He therefore called on the government to tackle the problem so as to make life easier for Nigerians.

He added that the festival also afforded the organizers the opportunity to test run an application which would allow food vendors to market their goods online.

One of the vendors, Mrs Omoluyi Esther, of Dorchess Food, who deals in sales of local food commended the organizers for putting together the event.

She lamented the daily increase in food materials which she said is affecting many companies involved in food production.

"As small scale business owners, there are challenges we are facing such as daily increases in prices of food.

Today you buy something for N200 and tomorrow it goes up to N500. Government should try to make sure there is money in circulation and bring down prices of food stuff. In that way, they can address food scarcity," she said.

Another vendor, Mrs Adekunle Olamide of Checkers Food Limited said for the government to reduce poverty, ' it should help to reduce in prices of goods.'

" They should make sure there is stability in the economy. The instability is affecting all brands and they are finding it hard to get materials for production. When they increase prices of their goods, it's the consumers that bear the brunt. So the government should help us stabilize Nigeria's economy so that brands will find it easier to produce," she urged.

A Nollywood star, Joseph Momodu, who was the special guest at the event commended the quality of food on display at the festival.

"The kind of food you see here , you might need to order them online before u get them but this event offers people the opportunity to get them at their doorsteps and cheaper. The festival is of great significance to everyone," he said.

He added: " There is hunger in the land. The government should help us subsidize food stuff to the nearest minimum to make food available. They should also control inflation especially the dollar scarcity so that the common man can do his or her business. They promised us that dollar will go down but it's not so now. Government should do their business so that the masses can enjoy."

TheCreative Director for the event, Adekoya Afeez commended the vendors for the quality of food products at the event and promised the festival will also be taken to other parts of the state.

Aside Sunquest Nigeria Limited, organisers of the event, other partners of the festival includes Zenith Bank, BrandRus and MMS Events

How we're solvingchallenges of car sales, fraud in automobile industry-Oyedele, Dove Autos boss

With the frequency which complaints flood the media space concerning uncompleted or botched deals in the purchase of cars as well as financial frauds and delivery of malfunctioning automobiles, a body has deemed it fit to float a veritable and verifiable online auto sales, maintenance and delivery platform that caters for the needs of automobile buyers and lovers from the comfort of the conveniences. The company is Dove Motors; reputable, trusted and integrity based.

Based in the United Kingdom, from where it facilitates car sales and delivery worldwide, Dove Motors was established to solve the problem of buying cars in Africa by creating a simple data website for all car needs. It is the company's unalloyed intention to ensure that buying a new car becomes stress-free and exciting. That's the hallmark of Dove Autos identity.

Speaking on the verified intentions of the company, a co-founder, Mr. Lawrence Oyedele hinted that "Our goal is to help you discover the best new car and buy directly from trusted dealers."

He further lighted that Dove Autos exists to grow both its car-buying audience and core advertising business, adding that the presence of the online platform is programmed to change will change how people shop for cars as "it provides the best online car buying experience, enabling all retailers to sell online."

He also noted that "We aim to build stronger partnerships with our customers, use our voice and influence to drive more environmentally friendly vehicle choices, and create an inclusive and more diverse culture."

Knowing that the business of car sales, purchase and delivery has become an all comers affair, making it difficult for customers to identify genuine practitioners, Dove has developed a system of empowering and partnering with the would-be clients towards gaining confidence and giving the customer total reason to trust and part with hard earned money for the good reasons, and getting equal value for every transaction.

Consequently, Dove, a 100% digital business, is built to help the car industry embrace the online world, and offers a suite of data-driven tools and services, including lead generation, brand building, e-commerce training, marketing, and advertising. These are add-ons the client cannot do without, coupled with the fact that all the company's activities rely on technology to create and recreate a marketplace.

Explaining further while Dove Autos chose the ecosystem it presently operates in, James Ebere, a co-founder, stressed that the company understands the overwhelming nature of buying and selling for customers because of the multiple participation, and the near inefficiency and complexity of the market. I other words, Dove is in the market to eliminate all encumbrances attached to smooth buying and selling of automobile products.

"The automobile market is complex and often inefficient. There are multiple participants and unsurprisingly consumers can find the process of buying or selling a car overwhelming. Through Dove Autos products, services, and partnerships, we aim to significantly improve the car buying experience, as well as leverage our existing relationships to improve further parts of the value chain," he said.

It is noteworthy to add that Dove Autos makes the customer's journey into the field of purchasing and selling of cars much more easier than imagined, having provided a platform that offers all and sundry an unparalleled selection of new and used car listings, enabling them to search from a marketplace of millions of cars.

It is also imperative to note that each advert features a high, and low-price indicator among other benefits of choosing Dove Autos.

In addition, the platform allows Retailer Stores to create a digital forecourt experience on Dove Autos for retailers to showcase their business, brand, and stock, giving car buyers confidence to buy from them

‘Assassins after my life,’ woman cries out, seeks IGP protection
….goes into hiding

A business woman, Mrs Komolafe Adenike Susannah, has cried out over recent attacks on her and family by some “unknown persons."
The mother of three, who owns a business center in Mushin area of Lagos State, said her family had come under physical attacks by some persons, with one of such attacks occurring in January this year when she was beaten to stupor by unknown individual on her way home.
According to her, she reported the incident at the Olosan Police Station, Mushin, with the police promising to investigate the matter but no one has been arrested till date.
She said further attacks happened in April this year, with the attackers inflicting further injuries on her mouth, and warning her they would further deal with her and her husband, which has now made her and children to go into hiding.
" A week after our arrival in Nigeria in January, in broad daylight, I was beaten to stupor by some people on commercial motorcycle. The attackers said they will deal with me and my husband, who is a legal practitioner.
Early April this year, the same thing happened close to my shop when two people on ' okada' came down while I was waiting for somebody, and gave me a blow again in my mouth and told me to tell my husband to steer clear of them. Since then we have been living in fear," she said. “
The business woman added that the minder of her son who normally go to the boy's school to pick him after closing school hours, was hypnotised on her way from picking the boy to the level where she could not comprehend anything again.
She added: “My husband and I had to change the schools of our children from one location to another and now scatter them in different schools for security reasons. My first son was taken to military school and the second daughter was taken to a Catholic school and the third to another international school.
She called on the Inspector General of Police to come to her aid.

It is recalled her husband, Richard Adekanmi Komolafe, a legal practitioner and right activists, Mr Richard Adekanmi Komolafe, had last month cried out over alleged incessant physical attacks and threat to his life and that of his wife and family.

According to the lawyer, his family had come under both physical and spiritual attacks from unknown people as a result of his activism and numerous court cases he had won against some prominent members in the society, thereby putting the life of his wife and children in danger.

One of 'Nigeria's foremost legal practitioners and right activists, Mr Richard Adekanmi Komolafe has cried out over incessant physical attacks and threat to his life and that of his wife and family.

According to the lawyer, his family has come under both physical and spiritual attacks from unknown people as a result of his activism and numerous court cases he had won against some prominent members in the society, thereby putting the life of his wife and children in danger.

The latest of such attacks is the one that happened to his wife shortly after he won a court case against the Nigeria police and a notorious land grabber in Bariga.

In January 2018, Komolafe Adekanmi had filed a matter before a Federal High Court, Lagos, on behalf of one Okesuji Obatoyinbo, Kunle Amosun, Eunice Obasohan and Stephen Ogunleye, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th applicants respectively , against the Inspector General of Police, Assistant Inspector General of Police, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, one Patrick Atayero (ACP), Zone 2, Adeniyi Adekunle (DSP), John Faluyi (ASP), Emmanuel Victor (SGT), also of Zone 2, Gbagada police station, Alex Gwarzah and Kayode Aiyetiwa, the 1st to 9th respondents respectively.

In the suit FHC/L/CS/46/2018, Komolafe had accused the respondents of ' arresting,
threatening to arrest, detaining the applicants and violating the applicant's fundamental right over a 12,605 square meters landed property in Ilupeju, Lagos.

According to the Motion on notice filed before the court, the applicants had purchased the property in 1972 but let part of it to one Mrs Ilaka for an event centre. The applicants later decided to develop the land into residential housing units.

Trouble however began when, during construction, some people began to harass workers on the site and threatened them to leave the land as well as asked for huge payment of money.

According to the suit “discreet investigation revealed that the brain behind this is the 9th
respondent.'

The 9th respondent was said to have "turned to the police to achieve his goal by lodging " ill- conceived complaints against the applicants' which led to the arrest of workers on the site and their detention for two nights at the Gbagada police station on the allegation that they were members of a terrorist group in Lagos.

In spite of the intervention of a deputy commissioner of police at the State Command which led to the release of the detained workers, the 8th respondent was said to have ' ran to the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th respondents to use their office to subdue the applicants and their workers.'
This led to further threats, harassment and intimidation from 5th respondent.

Therefore the applicants had urge the court ' to restrain the respondents from further arrest of the applicants and declare that the action of the 9th respondent to use the police harass and arrest the applicants is unlawful and illegal.'

During trial, Komolafe had told the court that he received further threats from the respondents, threatening to deal with him if the judgement should go against them.

In his judgment, Justice (Prof) ChukaObiozor berated the police for its involvement in the issue.

“The police have no business dabbing in a question of land ownership. I have failed to
find criminality in the allegations against the applicants to justify the arrest, threat, harassment and detention of the applicants by the 2nd, 4th to 8th respondents at the behest of the 9th respondent," the judge said.

The court therefore ordered the respondents to stop harassment of the applicants on the
said property." Substantial amounts was also awarded against the respondents.

Shortly after the judgement against the respondents, Komolafe said one evening two men on commercial motorcycle accosted his wife on her way home. They told her to warn her
husband that they would deal with him and his family if he continues to fight against them, that their lives is in danger.

" My wife was coming home one evening when a commercial motorcycle suddenly pulled up by her side. One man came down and suddenly began to verbally abuse her telling her that her husband is stubborn.

The man further told her that if I thought could continue to win cases against them, they will deal with me and my family and told her to warn me to stay away from them. They even mentioned the name of the schools my children attends to let her know they have been monitoring our movement. The two men later sped off on the motorcycle. As a result of the threat, we had to relocate our children to different schools. My wife and children had to also travel abroad for a week to douse the tension, escape further threats and avoid possible kidnapping of the children," Komolafe lamented.

He added the matter was reported at the Mushin police station but the police are yet to fish out the perpetrators.

He further said since the incident occurred, he and his family now lives in palpable fear as
they do not know what could happen next. He has also gone underground but vowed to continue to fight against injustice.

It is recalled some gunmen in 2017 invaded Lagos State Model College , Igbo Nla , Epe ,Lagos , and abducted the principals and some students.

The kidnappers were said to have stormed the school in the early hours when the students were at the morning assembly.

The gunmen abducted the principal of the junior secondary school, Mr .Oyesola and Mr Akirinmade who is the Principal of the senior secondary school. They also abducted some of the students.

Properties / UT Homes Presents 10 Units Of Affordable Bungalows by ayuskenke: 8:08pm On Feb 17, 2019
The Chief Executive Officer, UT Homes and
UT Financial Services, Mr Ade Adebajo, has
urged government to focus more attention
on providing affordable housing for all
Nigerians much as he called on the public to
take advantage of the low cost housing
which the company is embarking upon.
The United Kingdom trained financial expert
and property guru lamented that many
Nigerians are suffering from lack of
affordable housing as a result of housing
deficits in the country and urged
government to come to the rescue.
At the foundation laying/ground breaking
ceremony of the construction of 10 units of
luxury and affordable bungalows named
Campagne De-Maison, by the company in
Mowe, Ofada, Ogun State, Adebajo said
private investors have important roles in
ensuring affordable housing is available to
all Nigerians.
"Many Nigerians are still tenants because
they cannot afford to own a house.
Government should do more to provide
cheap and affordable houses for Nigerians
as well as provide enabling environment for
private investors to thrive. This is the
reason UT Homes has embarked on a
project of building affordable standard
homes for middle and low income earners,"
Adebajo said.

Adebajo further said "the project, a fully
furnished gated community, is the first
phase of what we are doing and it will be
sold within the community. We are targeting
middle and low income earners. We also
have provision for mortgages for those who
cannot pay once. There is assured security
with good sewage system, constant water
with excellent finishings. If we go by our
projection, the first set of people will move
in within the next nine months time.

"So we urge Nigerians to take advantage of
this opportunity and buy into this project
because government cannot do it alone. It
is our own little way of assisting the
government. Many of the buildings are
already sold out. This is a small
development, we are going to do larger one.
People can check our website or visit our
office at Opebi, Ikeja or Sanusi Fafunwa,
Victoria Island office for a chance in a life
time to own their own homes.

Lending credence to the authencity of the
project, the company's Project Manager,
Mr. Michael Olaiya, in company of the site
Engineer, promised the Nigerian public that
they are in for the best of housing
revolution, and hinted that it is on first come
first serve basis.

It would be recalled that housing for all is
one of thepolicies of the present
administration, and the Housing Minister,
Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has remained on
top of his game, putting in more efforts to
see to the realisation of the quest.
