Car Talk / 20 Interesting Facts About Lamborghini by bigchica(m): 5:36pm On Jul 19, 2017 |
1. Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. is an Italian automobile company that makes luxury, high end sports cars. Its has it headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese, near the city of Bologna, Italy. Lamborghini was founded by an Italian engineer Feruccio in 1963. 2. Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. emerged as a result of competition between Feruccio Lamborghini and Enzo Ferrari (of Ferrari cars ) who at that time already had been known as a famous manufacturer of sports cars. Feruccio Lamborghini himself was an accomplished engineer; he was an owner and manager of a successful company, which produced agricultural machinery. Feruccio loved sports cars and owned a Ferrari 250 GT. A rumour has it, that two great constructors had a conflict after Lamborghini had turned personally to Enzo Ferrari because of the broken clutch on his Ferrari 250 GT. It is believed that quick-tempered Enzo recommended Feruccio to deal exclusively with tractors, and never even touch a sports car. Feruccio Lamborghini took it as a challenge resolving to use his assets, experience, and passion to found a company, capable of going toe-to-toe with Ferrari. 3. This may come up as a surprise to some of you, but Lamborghini never participated in any major motorsports competitions. According to the will of Feruccio Lamborghini, his company stayed away from racing, because the famous Italian engineer always believed the motorsports to be a big waste of time and resources. 4. One thing Lamborgini was always known for is its top-notch design. Some of the best professionals in the industry, including Franco Scaglione, Touring, Zagato, Mario Marazzi, Bertone, ItalDesign and Marcello Gandini, worked on its visual design. 5. People usually think of luxury and high-performance grand tourers, whenever someone mentions the name Lamborghini. Nevertheless, the Italian automaker has created few unusual models. Feruccio Lamborghini had an extensive experience in producing tractors, so it seemed natural for him to try his hand at designing an automobile with high off-road capabilities. Lamborghini LM002 was the first SUV, built by Italian vehicle manufacturer. Combining speed and luxuriousness with exceptional off-road capabilities, Lamborghini LM002 was in many respects far ahead of its time. When it comes to comfort and ability to cross the difficult terrain, only Land Rover could compete with LM002. Unfortunately, automobile market was not quite ready for the new luxury SUV. Therefore, despite the orders from armed forces of Saudi Arabia and Libya, Lamborghini sold only 301 vehicles. 6. The Italian automaker launched its first production model in 1963. With the top speed of 280 km / h, Lamborghini 350GTV was a leader among production cars of its time. 7. The Italian company uses very distinctive naming convention for its car models. Feruccio Lamborghini was quite a fan of Spanish bullfight. In 1963, he visited the cattle-bred farm Miura in Seville. It was owned by Don Eduardo Miura Fernandez, one of the most famous breeders of fighting bulls in Spain. This visit had a strong influence on the Italian industrialist. In fact, he was so impressed by the traditional art of bullfighting, that he made a decision to name all his new sports cars after famous fighting bulls. Traditionally in Spanish bullfight, bulls that manage to defeat a matador are given life, and their names are forever inscribed in the history of the sport. Ferruccio Lamborghini was convinced, that a name of a fighting bull will emphasize the untamed nature of sports cars created under Lamborghini marque. By the way, Ferruccio Lamborghini himself was also a bull in a sense, since his zodiac sign was Taurus. (He was born on April 28, 1916). 8. The first model to be introduced to the world under the “bullish” name was Lamborghini Miura. The sports car debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 1966. The public warmly received it; however, spectators were somewhat confused, since they were not allowed to open the hood. This was not a coincidence: there was simply no engine under it! Since the engine was still being designed, the prototype was sent to the Geneva Motor Show with a ballast instead of an engine under the hood. Eventually, Miura proved to be a very good car. 9. Lamborghini Countach was produced by the Italian company for 16 years (from 1974 to 1990). Notably, this sports car is one of the a few Lamborghini models, with a name that has nothing to do with bulls and bullfighting. The word “countach” comes from the Piedmontese language, spoken in a region of Piedmont in North-West of Italy. It is an expression of excitement or astonishment and can be translated as “Heavens!” According to the legend, Nuccio Bertone himself made such an exclamation when he saw the first sketches of the future supercar. 10. The story of Lamborghini was not always a story of success. In 1987, the American automobile giant Chrysler, practically saved it from oblivion by acquiring it. The same year, the Italian vehicle manufacturer presented a peculiar concept car under the name of Portofino. It was a sedan with four doors of the guillotine type, powered by a 3.5-liter engine installed at the rear. Although it remained only a prototype, its image and design was subsequently embodied in many Chrysler cars. 11. In 1994, Lamborghini was acquired by an Indonesian investment group. It was a period of uncertainty for the Italian marque. The German automobile giant Volkswagen saved the famous vehicle manufacturer. Since 1998, Volkswagen has controlled Lamborghini through its subdivision Audi. Undoubtedly, this was a mutually beneficial union for both companies. 12. The design of modern Lamborghini is unusual even for supercars. The steel-cut body style, which became the signature of most Lamborghini models, makes it akin to fighter planes. The designer Filippo Perini admitted that he drew an inspiration from military aviation. He was particularly impressed by American B-2 and F-22 aircrafts while working on Lamborghini Aventador. 13. It turned out that the powerful Lamborghini V12 engine is a perfect fit for speedboats as well as supercars. Such a technical symbiosis is not a common thing in automobile industry. The luxury boat Riva Aquarama became one of the leaders of the market thanks to high performance and versatility of the incredible Lamborghini V12 engine. 14. Interestingly, Lamborghini cars are used by the police of United Arab Emirates and Italy. It makes sense if you think about it; nothing can detract criminals and attract tourists like the world’s fastest police car! 15. As we have already mentioned, Feruccio Lamborghini neglected motorsports and tried to stay away from it. Nevertheless, the Italian vehicle manufacturer is revising this strict policy, since today it is a handicap for an automaker that specializes in supercars to ignore motorsports in its entirety. Currently, the company has some notable presence in the world of car racing. The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo is an example of a successful collaboration between the two legendary brands. Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. and the Swiss watchmaker Blancpain teamed up to launch this prestigious international motor racing series. In 2009, the Swiss company even presented a special watch, dedicated to this mono-brand championship. 16. This surprises no one that Lamborghini brand has some of the most impressive achievements in the automobile world. The last one was 384 km / h speed record set by the Lamborghini Huracan during half a mile race. 17. Lamborghini has a very long and fruitful relationship with Italian wheel manufacturer PIRELLI. From the day one, PIRELLI tyres were used on all Lamborghini vehicles. The Italian automaker even created the special version of Lamborghini AVENTADOR, dedicated to PIRELLI. 18. Lamborghini AVENTADOR has a designation of LP 700-4 700 where “700” stands for 700 h/p engine and “4” for a four-wheel-drive. 19. Lamborghini is partly responsible for the emerging of the well-known automobile marque Pagani. The founder of the Pagani Automobili S.p.A, Horacio Pagani, had worked as an engineer at Lamborghini until he quit due to inability to employ his own ideas. In 1988, the famous Argentinian constructor, eager to put in use his designer talent and make his own product, created a new company Pagani Automobili S.p.A. 20. Nowadays, Lamborghini supercars are powered by either V8 or V12 engines. The ratio between those two engine types is approximately 3:1. http://www.everydaycarz.com.ng/2017/07/interesting-facts-about-lambirghini.html 2 Likes

Car Talk / Managing Without A Car by bigchica(m): 10:07pm On Jun 22, 2017 |
MANAGING WITHOUT A CAR Purchasing and maintaining car is a major expense , many people collect loan or make use of their life savings. So before makeup your mind to buy one, take a little bit of your time to consider if you really need it and possible alternative ways of getting around without have to own a car. A car may be a necessity, but it is an expensive one at that, don't be in a haste. Here are some points to consider before investing a large chuck of your life savings to buying a car. DO YOU REALLY NEED A CAR? Find out the facts! When thinking about whether you need a car, make sure you know how much different types of cars cost to run. Owning a car is a major expense! So if you’re thinking of buying your first car, or replacing an old one, it makes sense to think carefully about whether you really need it. People living in rural areas with poor public transport often have little or no alternative to using a car. But for some of us, it might be more to do with the convenience of jumping into the car however short the journey, or simply habit. Purchasing a car is just the beginning, maintaining the car would also cost you a lot. ALTERNATIVES TO USING A CAR The RAC says around three million cars in the UK are used less than once a week. A third of these cars are virtually new – a year or two old at most. According to Sustrans four out of 10 short car journeys are under two miles – a easily cycled distance Cycling This is also one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into your daily routine, plus it saves you money and is environmentally friendly. If you’re put off by steep hills on your route, why not test-ride an electric bike? Starting at around £500, most have a range of 20–25 miles and all of them offer you both speed and fitness benefits. Car share If commuting to work is your main reason for owning a car, it might be worth looking at sharing your journey with a colleague. Some car transport companies are more running car share schemes, which allows you share a taxi with another person going toward same direction. If you normally drive your children to school and it’s unsafe for them to walk, you could arrange to share the school run with other parents. Or simply use the school bus services. Car clubs These are in effect pay-as-you-go cars you can rent by the hour or day. You have the convenience of a car when you need it without having to pay for car tax (commonly known as road tax), servicing and car insurance. Taxi services. Using taxi is very easy and and less stressful. Call a taxi from the comfort of your home, and you are good to go in minutes. Uber and co are making it a lot easier. Public transport Public transport is likely to be cheaper than a car for commuting or short local journeys. When comparing costs, remember with a car you need to allow for running costs over the year as well as fuel. So it’s well worth considering buying a weekly or monthly season ticket for bus, train, tube or tram instead. For longer distances by train or bus, you can make big savings by booking saver tickets in advance. Motorbike Motorbikes and scooters cost considerably less to run than a car. For example, 125cc bikes and scooters will do more than 100 miles per gallon, which means a 20-mile daily work commute could cost as little as £5 a week in petrol. Electric scooters are particularly cheap to run – as little as 1p a day. However, their range is limited to 40 miles or less. Walking If your journey is only a mile or two, why not walk instead? Not only does it cost you nothing but it also cuts down on pollution and congestion. A walk of just one mile can also burn off 100 calories. Work from home Many companies now offer flexible working, so it might be worth speaking to your employer to find out whether it’s possible – even if for just one day a week. http://www.everydaycarz.com.ng/2017/06/managing-without-car.html |
Car Talk / Why You Should Always Carry Out A Car History Check by bigchica(m): 6:11pm On Jun 19, 2017 |
Why you should always carry out a car history check Purchasing a car especially used ones which is an exciting and expensive commitment, it is important that everything is done to ensure that nothing is overlooked and that all potential regret is avoided before you make final payment for the car. One of the most valuable aspects of the purchase of a used car is checking it's back story, commonly known as a ‘history check’. You want to find out about the previous owner; about modifications that have been made and about potential costs that are involved – before it’s too late. Lots of car owners every year, fall victim to second hand cars that are hiding some big secret. WHY YOU SHOULD CHECK THE VEHICLE’S HISTORY. •Statistics suggest that 25% of vehicles are associated with unpaid loans – meaning you could lose the ownership of the vehicle. You must find out if there is any outstanding finance that would stop you from officially owning the car. •1 in 8 could be an insurance write-off, unsafe or beyond economical repair. A history check would save any additional costs to getting the car into shape. •Your vehicle could be stolen, cloned or illegally imported or exported. This could spell legal issues and could prove costly – it’s far better to know in advance. •‘Clocking’ is the term given to the manipulation of the mileage. A check would find out the appropriate mileage of the car. •History checks also reveal previous number plates or changes to the vehicles colour, which could be used as a method of hiding potential problems with the vehicle. •A car history check will also help you if you’re selling a vehicle as it show proactivity and honesty before the sale is even greed. QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK BEFORE MAKING THAT PURCHASE •Is the vehicle priced fairly based on its current condition and history? •Is the mileage and number plate shown accurate? •Has it been involved in a collision or even written off? •Are the financial terms already associated with the vehicle? HOW TO CARRY OUT A HISTORY CHECK Recent, car history checks can be easily done anywhere online. All you need to do is enter the vehicle’s registration details and the Vehicle Identification Number. There are a number of online companies who offer this service for a relatively small fee, such as HPI (https://hpicheck.com/), the AA (http://www.theaa.com/vehicle-check) and confused.com. They draw data from a variety of sources such as the Police National Computer and the DVLA, using standard industry information, to get a detailed account of the history of your car. The AA offers a multicar deal, where you can check multiple cars at a discount, if you have more than one future purchases. A car history check simply gives you the added confidence that the choice you make isn’t hindered by problems from the past and helps you take more rational decision as regards the purchase. http://www.everydaycarz.com.ng/2017/06/why-you-should-always-carry-out-car.html

Car Talk / What Is A Good Car by bigchica(m): 10:34am On Feb 09, 2017 |
A good car is any car that meets the individual requirements of the user. A car is good to me if it checks all necessary parameters that I want in a car. A good car is a car that fits into your plans, this includes your budget, comfort, usage, sophistication, etc. If for instance, I want a cheap, with good fuel economy and low cost of maintenance, a car with a V8 engine will not be a good car for me. That of course does not mean that cars with v8 engine are bad! The first step to acquiring a good car to know what you actually need! Then finding out which car fits into this plan of yours. Before buying that car, take your time; carry out research not just on the car brand and specifications but also on your own budget, routine and life style. On several occasions, I have seen intended car buyers, especially the first time ones, set out to get a regular everyday kinda car that suits their personality and life style perfectly but returns with very pretty and expensive sport car. A friend of mine set out to get a Carmy 2002 model which we discussed about, he ended up buying a Murano which he doesn’t really need! It is of course a very beautiful car, but it wasn’t good for him, he couldn’t maintain it, Murano’s parts are quite expensive. Well he is looking for a buyer to sell of the car. The 2002Toyota Camry would have definitely served him better. It would be fallacious to say that a particular brand of vehicle is a good car. Most cars are good! Therefore in picking a car, you should not just pick a car that is general goo, you should be a car that is particularly good for you. Please bear in mind that what is a good car to you may be a terrible choice to somebody else! The following should be taken into consideration in choosing a good car: BUDGET: The first thing you should consider when picking a car is your budget. A car that is way above your budget is not a good car for you. Don’t get into debt because you want to drive a car. Budget is not limited to coat of purchase, but also includes the cost of cost of maintenance, availability of part and technical knowhow. Why buy a car if you have to import the basic parts or can get hold of an expert to work on your vehicle? At the end of the day, you may pack up the car due to high cost of maintenance. If you set out to buy a Toyota corolla do not come back with a BMW S series. SAFETY AND COMFORT: Your safety and comfort is paramount, and should not be compromised. For what use is a car, if you are not comfy in it? Before buying that car, consider your weight and height, size of family etc. if your can is not convenient, it is not a good car! USAGE: How often do you drive? If you plan on buying an everyday car, then you must buy a strong vehicle. Your environment and regular routes should also determine the kind of vehicle you buy. How bad are your road networks, would you be dodging pothole, would you be driving off road, how long would you drive daily, how many k/m do you expect to cover daily. These are important question to ask yourself before you make a purchase. A good car is not a BMW, or a Benz or Range; it may even be a Subaru or Kia! A good car is a car that personifies you. http://www.everydaycarz.com.ng/2017/02/what-is-good-car.html http://www.everydaycarz.com.ng/ |
Car Talk / Re: The Driver-less Car, The Future Of Motoring? by bigchica(m): 6:24pm On Dec 26, 2016 |
THE DRIVER-LESS CAR, THE FUTURE OF MOTORING? How do driverless cars work? Driverless cars used to be seem a fantasy from the futuristic realm of science fiction, today however it is coming to a road near you, with giant strides from the likes of Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Google and Audi amongst other companies that have made considerable advancement in driverless car technology. The advantages of driverless cars are quite numerous, From reducing the number of car accidents on the road to improved pollution emitted into the environment by vehicles. Human mistakes and carelessness while driving is the most common cause of road accidents, and with the recent influx of sophisticated gadgets in today modern cars, drivers get more easily distracted. But if drivers aren't going to concentrate on the road, who is? If technology continues on its current course, your car will do the concentrating for you. Automakers are developing complex systems that allow cars to drive themselves. They're also furthering existing technologies such as self-parking and pre-safe systems. So how do driverless cars work? A self-driving car is capable of sensing its environment and navigating without human input. In other to complete this task, each vehicle is equipped with state of the art GPS unit, an inertial navigation system, and a range of sensors including laser rangefinders, radar, and video. The vehicle uses positional information from the GPS and inertial navigation system to localize itself and sensor data to refine its position estimate as well as to build a three- dimensional image of its environment. Most self-driving cars control systems implement a deliberative architecture i. e they are capable of making intelligent decisions by 1. maintaining an internal map of their world and 2. using that map to navigate an optimal path to their destination avoiding obstacles (e.g. road structures, pedestrians and other vehicles) from a set of possible paths. Once the vehicle determines the best path to take, the decision is dissected into commands, which are fed to the vehicle’s actuators. These actuators control the vehicle’s steering, braking and throttle. This process of localization, mapping, obstacle avoidance and path planning is repeated multiple times each second on powerful on- board processors until the vehicle reaches its destination! There are several systems that work in conjunction with each other to control a driverless car. 1. Radar sensors dotted around the car monitor the position of vehicles nearby. With two sensors in the front bumper, and two in the rear, the radar units allow the car to avoid impact by sending a signal to the on-board processor to apply the brakes, or move out of the way when applicable. 2. Video cameras detect traffic lights, read road signs and keep track of other vehicles, while also looking out for pedestrians and other obstacles. 3.LIDAR sensors help to detect the edges of roads and identify lane markings by bouncing pulses of light off the car’s surroundings. The Google Car uses a Velodyne 64-beam laser in order to give the on-board processor a 360-degree view by mounting the LIDAR unit to the top of the car (for unobstructed viewing) and allowing it to rotate on a custom-built base. 4. Ultrasonic sensors in the wheels can detect the position of curbs and other vehicles when parking. 5. A central computer analyses all of the data from the various sensors to manipulate the steering, acceleration and braking. The software processes all of the data in real- time as well as modeling behavioral dynamics of other drivers, pedestrians, and objects around you. While some data is hard-coded into the car, such as stopping at red lights, other responses are learned based on previous driving experiences. Every mile driven on each car is logged, and this data is processed in an attempt to find solutions to every applicable situation. 6. Positioning A car with no steering wheel, no brakes and no accelerator would be essentially useless without advanced positioning systems to track its course and plot an appropriate route to its destination. For this challenge, Google uses its own map system, as well as GPS satellites, inertial measurement units, and a wheel encoder to determine actual speed. The system works alongside the on-board cameras to process real-world information as well as GPS data, and driving speed to accurately determine the precise position of each vehicle, down to a few centimetres all while making smart corrections for things like traffic, road construction, and accidents. The driverless car future is increasingly become a reality. Of course it is still far from perfection and is ridden with its own challenges. Manufacturers have made significant advancements towards making self-driving cars a reality; however, there remain a number of technological hurdles that manufacturers must overcome before self- driving vehicles are safe enough for road use. GPS can be unreliable, computer vision systems have limitations to understanding road scenes, and variable weather conditions can adversely affect the ability of on-board processors to adequately identify or track moving objects. Self-driving vehicles have also yet to demonstrate the same capability as human drivers in understanding and navigating unstructured environments such as construction zones and accident areas. The transition from human-operated vehicles to fully self-driving cars will be gradual, with vehicles at first performing only a subset of driving tasks such as parking and driving in stop-and-go traffic autonomously. As the technology gets better, more driving tasks can be reliably outsourced to the vehicle. http://www.everydaycarz.com.ng/2016/12/the-driver-less-car-future-of-motoring.html?m=1 everydaycarz.com.ng[/quote] |

As the technology gets better, more driving tasks can be reliably outsourced to the vehicle. http://www.everydaycarz.com.ng/2016/12/the-driver-less-car-future-of-motoring.html?m=1 everydaycarz.com.ng |

Car Talk / what to do when your car wont start! by bigchica(m): 7:38pm On Nov 09, 2016 |
CAR WON’T START? DO NOT PANIC, ITS PROBABLY NOT A BIG DEAL To diagnose the reason your car isn’t starting, you need to pay attention to what happens when you turn the key. Does the engine crank but not actually start or, when you turn the key nothing happens? “In a layman's eyes, the two options are the same because both create a scenario that results in the vehicle’s failure to start. While the two situations might seem similar, they have very different meanings that are important to a mechanic and can signal different problems calling for a variety of solutions. Your car may not start for a number of reasons. The following list outlines the most common circumstances and tells you what action you can take to try to remedy each situation: IF CAR IS SILENT WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. Check the battery terminal cable connections. If they look very corroded, force the point of a screwdriver (with an insulated or wooden handle) between the connector and the terminal post and twist it to lodge it firmly. Then try to start the engine. If it starts, you need to clean or replace your cables. If you turn over the key and the engine doesn’t crank, that probably means there’s an electrical problem. This can mean a number of things, including faulty sensors. Here are some different ways to narrow down the problem in this situation. Dead or weak battery: “A major factor that affects batteries is called parasitic draw or drain, This occurs when your vehicle is shut off but some of the computers are using small amounts of power to maintain learned or stored information. Parasitic drain happens naturally and the battery can be recharged via the alternator with some daily driving. But if the car hasn’t been used regularly, the battery can wear down and not have enough juice to start. Excessive parasitic drain can come from things like leaving your headlights on when the vehicle is off. Poor electrical connections at battery terminals: “Most consumers are familiar with the corrosion that accumulates on the top of a battery by the terminals, This can affect the connection at the battery terminals. However, even clean batteries can lose charge over time. Park or Clutch Switch is Broken or Misadjusted: if you try to start the vehicle and the lights don’t dim or flicker when turning the key, then you most likely have either an ignition switch, park/neutral switch, relay starter or wiring issue on the control side of the starter circuit. Cars need to be in park or the clutch needs to be depressed to start. If the switch isn’t in the right position then the car just won’t start. Security System Error: Car keys today are coded or programmed to work with their car, like a fingerprint that’s unique to both the key and the ignition. However like with any electronics, the programming can get buggy. That confuses the security system and stop you from starting your car. “With today’s modern security systems, it’s important to check that you have the proper key coded to the vehicle,” Even vehicles with smart keys (ones where the key fob can stay in your pocket and you push a start button) can cause issues. Interference can be an issue, and you should double check the battery in the fob. IF YOUR CAR MAKES A CLICKING NOISE BUT WONT START. This is caused by the solenoid in the starter engaging and then disengaging rapidly. Of course, these parts can become defective and cause the non-start to occur. IF THE CAR CRANKS OVER BUT WONT START. Check the fuel supply to your engine. If that’s okay, check whether the electrical spark is getting to your spark plugs. spark plugs, or ignition coils may need replacing before your engine can turn over. THE ENGINE STARTS BUT DIES If your car has a carburettor, check your carburettor adjustment and your choke to see whether the choke is first closing and then opening. If you have fuel injection, you’ll need professional help. THE CAR WONT START ON COLD MORNINGS. For vehicles with carburettors, check the choke if its closed? If you have fuel injection, you’ll need to have a professional diagnose the cold-start problems. THE ENGINE MISSES WHILE IDLING. Check the points and the spark plugs, Also check the fuel pump, fuel filter, and carburettor. OTHER REASONS WHY YOUR ENGINE WONT START! If the engine is loosing power then gradually dies as if its running out of gas. It's a common problem when the fuel level sensor doesn't work properly and a vehicle runs out of gas while the fuel gauge still showing some fuel in the tank. A usual indication of low fuel level is lack of power that gets worse gradually. If there is a very little fuel in the tank, the engine may start and run for a short time, then die again. You may also notice that the engine chokes off when you press the gas. There is no way to check how much fuel left in the tank other than filling it up. One indication that there is no fuel in the tank could be the fuel pump that sounds differently. A fuel pumps typically runs for a few seconds when you turn the ignition on. In most cars, a fuel pump is installed in the fuel tank; it sounds like a quiet buzz coming from the back of the car. If there is no fuel, it may sound differently. The engine won't start after water got into the engine compartment. If your car died after water got in the engine compartment, for example, after washing the engine or after driving through a deep puddle, this could be caused by water shortening out some of the ignition components. Water could get inside the distributor cap or on the ignition coil and ignition cables and this could cause problems. Often this happens when a tune-up hasn't been done for a long time. Take or tow your car to a mechanic to check it out. Often, once the ignition components dry out, the car may start again. If your car won't start after water gets into the engine compartment, a tune-up is a good way to start. A car won't start after being overheated. Overheating the engine can cause a lot of problems and if the engine doesn't start after being overheated it's not a very good sign. Have your car checked out for compression in the cylinders. A leak down test also can help. If you can get the engine to start, what helps? Sometimes a car may have an intermittent problem, when it starts fine most of the time, but once in a while it doesn't. Such problems that are not presented at all times could be very difficult to diagnose. What will help to find a problem of this type is if you notice when, under what conditions the car doesn't start and what helps to get it started. For example, if you notice that wiggling the ignition key helps to get the car started, it may tell your mechanic that the problem is likely with the ignition switch, which is very common. Or, if the security light flashes on the instrument panel each time the car doesn't start could tell your mechanic to begin with checking the security system. http://www.everydaycarz.com.ng/2016/09/car-wont-start.html?m=1 1 Like |
Car Talk / Car Parts: Brand New Vs Tokunbo by bigchica(m): 8:54pm On Oct 27, 2016 |
BRAND NEW VS FAIRLY USED (TOKUNBO) VEHICLE PARTS. Car users are always faced with the dilemma of choosing between buying a new or tokunbo car parts. While many believe that new parts are way better, others stick with the fairly used ones. Which is actually better? When you take your car to the dealership for repair, you know you are getting Original Equipment Manufacturer car part (OEM). However, if you take your car to an independent auto mechanic workshop, you will most likely get an after market car part, which is also brand new. What is an after market part? An after market part is any part for a vehicle that is not sourced from the car's manufacturer. A number of companies make parts designed to function the same, or in some cases better than the original; well some are not so better. About 80 percent of new parts flocking the automobile market are after market parts! Ever wonder why some tokunbo parts are actually more expensive than some new parts? Tokunbo parts are "supposed" to be used OEM car parts. But how do you tell whether or not it is a used OEM or a used after market part? This is when you begin to hear of tokunbo "grade 1". These grade 1 parts are suppose to be fairly used OEM and not used after market parts. Have you ever requested for a tokunbo spare part which looks exactly like the one you want to change in your car, but it does not seems to work with your car even after a technician have confirmed that the tokunbo part is sound? Well what happened was that you got an after market tokunbo part and not a manufacturer's part. Before getting your tokunbo car parts, make research, note down the part series number, and get the exact replica. I always advice you go for a brand new Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) car parts, but when you cannot afford it due to cost or availability, do well to settle for an OEM tokunbo grade 1 parts popularly known as "follow come". However if you are familia with after market brands, they would serve also as their advantages abound! http://www.everydaycarz.com.ng/2016/07/auto-parts-brand-new-vs-fairly-used_24.html?m=1 www.everydaycarz.com.ng 2 Likes |

I still believe that what you drive matters too. I wouldnt dream of taking a range rover evogue to a road side mechanic... Neither would i advice you to take your 1999 carmy to a workshop, you will just go an waste money. Technology have greatly advanced, and this road side guy have refused to keep up. Imagine a bmw x6 where you have to register the battery with a scanner if you remove the terminals for whatever reason else the car wont start. That what you want to go and give kabiru to repair abi? Car Talk / Road Side Mechanic Vs Auto Workshop Vs Dealership by bigchica(m): 9:49am On Oct 14, 2016 |
ROAD SIDE MECHANIC VS AUTO WORKSHOP VS DEALERSHIP Even if your car doesn't come with the most sophisticated and latest technology, your car is still the most expensive gadget you own. Therefore maintaining your car should take priority if you want it to serve you right, and the best way to maintain your car is to always make use of a trained auto technician. You really cannot afford an inexperienced hand to toy with your car! It does more harm than good, not just to your vehicle but to your wallet too. THE ROAD SIDE MECHANIC Inexperience, trial and error is usually associated with the road side mechanic. A large number of road mechanics have little experience and knowledge about the well-being of cars. Working on modern vehicles demands unprecedented talent and training. Gone are the days when car were more mechanical than electronic! The carburettors have giving way for the Injectors, onboard diagnostics is now a norm and almost every mechanical part is regulated by sensors and actuators! You can not afford to trust your car to an untrained road side mechanic. The era of trial and error is gone. For your own safety! In the bid to fix a particular problem, more problems usually arise leading to Charging for unnecessary repairs A road side mechanic diagnoses a problem, repairs it and - surprise! - the problem is still there. They then re- diagnose it as a different problem and repair that. Eventually, the mechanic repairs the original defect but charges the customer for all the repairs. Unlike the modern auto workshops and dealership, a roadside mechanic usually diagnose with his collection of experiences as well as customer's complaints. But that can never be enough because for a single complain, there is a thousand and one possible cause. Therefore there Is almost no way to pin point these correctly without running a full OBD 2 scan on the vehicle which most road side are not equipped to do. In some other instances, the road side mechanic is fully aware of other faults in your vehicle but will keep mute so as to get you to come back and pay more. Misdiagnosing something that is not faulty Sometimes to pad their bills, mechanics will tell a customer non-defective parts need to be replaced. Instead of getting your brakes resurfaced, They’ll tell you to get them replaced. Other parts of the car can be repaired, They’ll suggest replacement. Like unnecessary repairs, unneeded parts being sold to you is also a trick for major extortion. Purchase of inferior parts; the average road side mechanic in Nigeria is guilty of this. The car owner pays for authentic parts for repairs, they will not only double the price of parts, they go as far as getting inferior parts which will eventually cause more damage. Quacks would only destroy your car for you. However if you can get an experienced and trusted road side mechanic, never let go! The advantages abound, the most important been availability and turn around time. The one-on-one relationship between driver and mechanic that the road side mechanic foster can really help consumers have confidence in both the work that's performed and in the vehicle itself. Local mechanics are more willing to help you understand how your car performs and what it needs. You can ask to look under the hood or the chassis with your local mechanic, and perhaps learn something about what goes where or why a service needs to be performed. AUTO WORKSHOP Auto workshop boost of sound and well trained technicians. They pamper your car. Although their mode of service may differ when it comes to organisational structure they actually have some similarities. For every car that enters into an auto workshop, their is usually a file dedicated to it. This usually show the extend of work done on the car. It is important to know the repair history of a car, it ensures proper maintenance . Most auto workshop carry out a routine walk around and technical evaluation on a vehicle to determine the extend of damage, this is done by carrying out an OBD 2 scan and visual inspections. The technician at this point may notice other problems with the car that you didn't complain about. Although work does not start until you give your consent and pay! How ever the major issue with auto workshop is the price! Its usually on the higher side, at least when compare with the road side mechanics. The million dollar questions here is whether or not its worth it? Well as some body who have worked with an auto workshop, i would say NO! They are mostly well packaged road side mechanic workshops save for few good ones. Most auto workshop do not go for the best parts in the market i.e original equipment manufacturer's parts, Since most of them are generic i.e they do not repair a single brand of vehicle. they hardly order parts from manufacturers except in rare cases where customers specifically request for it or it is the only option! They usually go for the cheaper after market parts, of course not the inferior grade type but not just the best! Even though they are charging you for the best quality. There turn around time is another problem. They take like forever to get your vehicle fix. This is usually due to the processes involved especially if its a major repair work. They have to evaluate the car to find out the problems, make a price quotation which you have to approve and make payment before work can start. Sometimes it take like forever to generate a price quote because most auto workshop do not stock their stores with parts. It would be too expensive to do that since they don't work on a particular brand of car. Imagine having parts for Mercedes, bmw, toyota, honda, nissa etc. you can afford that! One major advantage of using auto workshop is because of the peace of mind they afford you. You can be rest assured that you car is in good hands and majority of them take responsibility for returned jobs. DEALERSHIP Dealership represent the manufacturer's service department. This is probably the best place to have your car fixed. Seriously, there is no better place! They don't just pamper your vehicle, they spoil it! Its their own. The technicians at the dealer level are specialists, they are manufacturer- trained and typically work only on your make of vehicle. What about warranties? A dealer will perform repairs for free if your car is still under warranty. Dealers are paid by the manufacturers to perform this service and require the service technician to verify the problem, so you might find that dealers are hesitant to perform warranty work for problems they have difficulty substantiating. The major issue with dealership is the price! Way more than your neighbourhood auto workshop. This is usually because they have well trained technicians who specialises on your vehicle plus dealers offer only OE (Original Equipment) parts, which represent a standard of quality and engineering that only the manufacturer can authorise. My candid advise is to make use of your dealership if you can afford it. Nothing could go wrong, especially if you drive expensive luxury cars. However it is advisable to visit your trusted road side or neighbourhood auto shop to fix your regular everyday cars. It will save you money. Maintaining your car is very important, for your safety and those of other road users, plus it saves you lots of money. Don't wait till it completely break down. www.everydaycarz.com.ng/2016/10/road-side-mechanic-vs-auto-workshop-vs.html?m=1 2 Likes 3 Shares |
Car Talk / Blown Head Gasket by bigchica(m): 8:55pm On Oct 11, 2016 |
What is a head gasket? Basically, an engine is divided into two parts; a cylinder block and a cylinder head. The block is where the pistons and cylinders are located, and the head is where the valves and rocker arms reside. In between where the head and the block meet, is where the head gasket is located. The gasket seals both the combustion chamber and the coolant passages in your engine. This means your head gasket has to seal both extremely hot high pressure combustion gases as well as engine coolant which can be anywhere from cold ambient temperatures to the normal operating temperature of your engine. Due to this, the head gasket develops leaks over time. The gasket is placed there so that in the event of a mechanical breakdown, the cylinder block and the head can be separated and repaired individually. The head gaskets only job is to seal the area where the two pieces of the engine meet. The head gasket has to seal the follow three areas 1. The combustion chamber, this is the area where the fuel, air, spark, and compression take place, the gasket needs to be able to withstand extreme temperatures and pressure in this area, so this is the most common place to have a head gasket failure, or a blown head gasket. 2. The head gasket also seals the coolant passages between the cylinder block and head, there is not a whole lot of pressure in this area, but sometimes engine coolant can become corrosive due to the lack of service, and at this point, the coolant can eat away at the head gasket, and eventually it will cause a leak. 3. The last area the head gasket seals is the oil passages, and again, there is not a lot of pressure in this area. It's rare to have a head gasket leak in this area, if it does, the most common cause is an inferior product of head gasket. In other words, the head gasket must have been defective straight from the manufacturer. What is a Symptom of a Blown Head Gasket? Engine overheating or exhaust gases in the radiator. If you think you may have exhaust gases in the radiator, the gases would be accommodated by constant bubbling in the radiator. Engine running poorly (skipping, hesitating, or lack of power). Coolant leaking externally from bellow the exhaust manifold White smoke from the exhaust pipe. White milky oil Significant loss of coolant with no visible leaks The most obvious visible sign of a blown head gasket would be coolant externally leaking from the head gasket. The head gasket will be below or inboard of the exhaust manifold. If the head gasket is blown out completely between the coolant passage and combustion chamber, the cooling system will build up extreme pressure and possibly blow off the radiator cap, crack the radiator tank, or blow a radiator hose, whichever is the weakest part of the cooling system, it will fail first. Usually one of these symptoms by itself is not enough to prove you have a head gasket leak, but if you have multiple symptoms at the same time it is likely that you have a head gasket leak. It is important to drive your vehicle as little as possible if you have a head gasket leak. The hot gases and cold coolant moving through the hole in the gasket can quickly erode or warp the metal head or engine block leaving you with costly damages or even having to purchase new heads or a new engine. Consequences of not replacing a bad head gasket Because of the difficulty in diagnosing and the expense of repairing a head gasket, we may be tempted to let it go. This is a big mistake. Depending on the type of failure, far more damage will soon occur. If coolant enters the exhaust, through the combustion chamber, the catalytic converter(s) is often damaged. Coolant in the engine oil may destroy the engine, by breaking down lubrication. Combustion gases that leaks into the coolant usually results in continued overheating and more damage. Hydrocarbons entering the coolant will also greatly increase corrosion. This may destroy the radiator, heater core and other expensive components. Preventing head gasket problems Replace engine coolant before the pH falls below 7.0 Use distilled water and the proper coolant type only Always pre-mix coolant and water, before putting in the engine When an engine starts to overheat, shut it off, IMMEDIATELY Repair any over-heating conditions immediately Address any problem with pinging or detonation immediately When replacing a head gasket, replace head bolts and properly torque the cylinder heads Blown Head Gasket Sealers or Quick Fixes If you're looking for a quick fix for a blown head gasket, stop! There is no such product on the market, so if you're thinking about using quick silver power, or bars leak, it's only a temporary fix and could cause more problems down the road like, blockages in a coolant passage, clogged radiator tubes, blockage in the heater core. You can take your chances with a head gasket sealer in an emergency, but in my personal opinion, you're flirting with disaster! The quick fix may work for a week or two, but you'll pay handsomely in the end. Fixing a Blown Head Gasket If the blown head gasket has caused catastrophic damage, a complete engine may need to be installed or a new vehicle purchased. If the engine is redeemable, the head gasket should be replaced. When replacing, consumers should search by the make, model, and year of the car and obtain the newest generation of head gasket possible along with updated instructions and newer generation tools. Vehicle owners should follow the instructions carefully so as not to damage the gasket during installation or cause damage to the engine in the future. It is always advisable to engage a professional to do the job. Conclusion A blown head gasket is a serious issue, as mechanical problems in the vehicle may have caused the problem and will need fixing. In addition, the head gasket problems may have caused engine failure or serious damage to the engine components, and that situation will need addressing. It is a frustrating problem to experience, because fixing it is usually costly and time consuming. Many vehicle owners are not aware of the signs that indicate that the head gasket is failing or has failed, or it could fail so quickly that nothing can be done to prevent it. Because a blown head gasket is so serious, vehicle owners should do their best to perform regularly scheduled maintenance and prevent operating problems before they occur. In most cases, replacement of cylinder heads and gaskets will be quite expensive. This is due to their location on modern engines and the amount of labor required to replace them. With over-head and double over-head cam engines, we have to remove the front and top of the engine gain access. This often includes removing the timing chain[s] or timing belt. In some vehicles we have to remove the engine from the vehicle to gain access. http://www.everydaycarz.com.ng/2016/10/blown-head-gasket.html?m=1 1 Like |

1 Like |

Car Talk / Everything You Need To Know About HYBRID CARS. by bigchica(m): 4:50pm On Oct 05, 2016 |
HYBRIDS A hybrid car is one that uses more than one means to power it self, that means combining a normal petrol or diesel engine with an electric motor. vehicles are called hybrids because they use both a small internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric motor to obtain maximum power and fuel economy with minimum emissions. The most important advantages of a hybrid is that it uses lesser fuel and emits lesser CO2 than conventional non-hybrid vehicles. Hybrids also use an internal combustion engine—and can be fueled like normal cars—but also have an electric motor and battery, and can be partially or wholly powered by electricity. By using both a conventional engine and electric motor, hybrids achieve significantly better fuel efficiency than non-hybrid. They also pollute less and save drivers money through fuel savings. The more innovative hybrids have larger batteries and can recharge their batteries from an outlet, allowing them to drive extended distances on electricity before switching to gasoline or diesel. these cars can offer improved environmental performance and increased fuel savings by substituting grid electricity for gasoline. How do hybrids work? Hybrids are powered by either a petrol or diesel engine and an electric motor. However, different manufacturers have created different ways of merging the two power-trains into one. The common types of hybrids Conventional hybrids: In the Toyota Prius, for instance, probably the best known hybrid, each of the power sources can drive the car separately or they can work together. At low speeds, the engine is turned off and the car is driven only by the electric motor. Then, when maximum acceleration is needed, both work together. At stages between, any excess power generated by the engine is used to recharge the batteries that power the electric motor. The battery is big enough that the electric motor can power the car for up to 1.25 miles. Toyota also uses this system in the Yaris and Auris hatchbacks and Prius+ MPV hybrids, while cars from Audi, BMW, Citroen, Land Rover, Lexus, Mercedes, Peugeot, Porsche and Volkswagen work on the same basis. The Honda Insight and the Honda Jazz are slightly different. Here, a relatively small conventional engine uses an electric motor to give it extra help when required. The big difference is that the electric motor is not capable of powering the car on its own. Plug-in hybrids: There is also the ‘plug-in hybrids’ which, as the name implies, can be plugged into an electric outlet to recharge their batteries, as well as being charged on the move. Effectively, they are a halfway house between conventional hybrids and full electric vehicles. Although they have a conventional engine, they also have larger batteries than regular hybrids and can drive longer distances on electric power alone - up to 30 miles in some cases. Toyota produces a plug-in version of the Prius, while Volvo has a diesel-hybrid V60 and Mitsubishi's petrol-powered Outlander PHEV is the only plug-in SUV. The Vauxhall Ampera and Chevrolet Volt works slightly differently. In these two cars drive always comes from the electric motor; the petrol engine is just there to act as a generator to charge the battery pack when it starts running out. TWO-MODE HYBRIDS: Instead of the large storage battery found on conventional hybrids, two-mode hybrids use smaller batteries and two electric motors located inside an automatic transmission with two sets of gears — one for the ICE and the other to amplify the power of the electric motors. The transmission can function as a continuously variable transmission, as well. In one mode, at lower speeds, the vehicle can run with one or both electric motors, with or without the ICE, or on the ICE alone. At higher speeds, the second mode kicks in, and the ICE runs continuously in its higher gear ratios. Advantages of having a hybrid! The main reason that hybrid cars where developed was to help solve the pollution problems that are caused by conventional, fuel ran cars. While they still use some amounts of fuel, it is much less than normal vehicles. They release a drastically lower amount of carbon emissions. Automatic Start/Stop. Automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and restarts it when the accelerator is pressed. This reduces wasted energy from idling. Another great benefit of driving a hybrid vehicle is the fact that is uses a significantly lower amount of gas than traditional cars do. This is because all of the energy that would normally be wasted, like moving from a stop, the air conditioner, and other things, are powered by the battery instead of the fuel. Along with using less gas, hybrid cars have very high gas mileage, which saves you even more money. Another fuel-saving feature of the hybrid is regenerative braking! Conventional cars rely entirely on friction brakes to slow down, dissipating the vehicle's kinetic energy as heat. Regenerative braking allows some of that energy to be captured, which means that you don’t have to charge it before use. Every time you break, the energy you are stopping is harnesses and used to regenerate the battery in the vehicle Quiet As A Mouse When you start up a hybrid vehicle, yo may not even realise it! The engine is so quiet that you can hardly hear it at all, even when you are driving down the road. The unique engine and power supplies are the cause of this silence. The electric motor provides power to assist the engine in accelerating, passing, or hill climbing. This allows a smaller, more-efficient engine to be used. In some hybrids, the electric motor alone propels the vehicle at low speeds, where gasoline engines are least efficient. They also command higher resale values. Hybrid cars are more expensive initially, but save you quite a pretty penny in the long run. If you have a hybrid car and plan to sell it, you can have better profit out of it. The Disadvantages of owning a Hybrid Cars In order to boost the amount of fuel that is saved, the manufacturers of hybrid vehicles try to make them as light as possible. They do this by using very light materials, and removing any unnecessary things. The result of this isn’t only better gas mileage, but very poor handling as well. It can be difficult to control a hybrid car, especially in windy or unstable weather conditions. The initial costs of buying a hybrid car can be nearly 15 thousand dollars more than the same car in a traditional model!!! If you are not planning to drive the car long distances, or even much at all, then a hybrid car doesn’t have the return on investment that people anticipate. With every new piece of technology comes the need for people who know how to work on and fix it. The same is true with hybrid cars. Since they have not been around for a very long time, it is very expensive to have any type of maintenance done on them. Danger! Since the materials of the vehicle are made out of light weight things, the amount of safety that the vehicle has is highly compromised. If a hybrid car is in a high impact collision, the materials that are protecting the passengers and drivers can not do their job as well. Important Facts About Hybrid Cars Hybrid cars produce 90 percent less pollutants than traditional vehicles. Up to 25 percent of your fuel costs are saved with a hybrid vehicle. The very first hybrid car that was made commercially available was the Toyota Prius, which was first sold in 1997 in Japan. 4 percent of all cars on the road are hybrids. Making Your Decision Deciding whether or not a hybrid car is right for you involves more than just a desire to be environmentally friendly. You have to look at the resources in your location that can help you maintain and sustain the car. Depending on the type of car you purchase you may need mechanics that are familiar with it or an alternate fuel source. Even if you do purchase a hybrid car there is more you can do to lessen your effect on the environment. One of the most important considerations is how you drive. You can replace many of your car trips by using public transportation, carpooling or even riding a bicycle. Also, planning to use the car more effectively can reduce the overall number of trips you are making each week. Hybrid or not, the less you drive the better it is for the environment. common repairs for hybrid cars Weak batteries inherent in hybrid vehicles means that you’re a lot more likely to require a new battery a lot sooner than you would in a standard car. The trouble here is that replacing a hybrid car battery can cost you a lot more than it would on a regular car or truck. Replacing the oxygen sensors in your hybrid car can also cost a lot, but the lost fuel efficiency from not replacing it can be equally damaging to your wallet. Oxygen sensors track how much unburned oxygen there is in the vehicle’s exhaust, an issue that can have a significant impact on the gas mileage that you get. Catalytic converter replacements are also common repair issues in hybrid vehicles, not to mention among the costliest to fix. Some hybrid car owners may have to fork over as much as $2000 (about 800k in naira) to have their catalytic converters replaced. Leaks in the hybrid’s evaporative emissions system or all-out failure of the system also rank among the most frequent repair issues. In conclusion the hybrid is a recent technology that has not been perfected. It is however a very important innovation that should be embraced. Go get one if you can afford it! http://www.everydaycarz.com.ng/2016/10/hybrid-cars.html?m=1 |
Car Talk / Causes Of Vehicle Over Heating by bigchica(m): 12:36pm On Oct 04, 2016 |
Common Causes of Engine Overheat Overheating NOTE: To avoid burns and injury, never, ever attempt to remove a radiator cap while the engine is hot! An overheated engine can be caused by anything that decreases the cooling system’s ability to absorb, transport and dissipate heat; therefore engines can overheat for a variety of reasons. Let’s take a look at some of the most common causes. Cooling System Leaks: This is the primary cause of engine overheating. Possible leak points include hoses, the radiator, water pump, thermostat housing, heater core, head gasket, freeze plugs, automatic transmission oil cooler, cylinder heads and block. Perform a pressure test. A leak-free system should hold pressure for at least one minute. Wrong Coolant Concentration Be sure to use the coolant recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer. The wrong type of coolant and/or mixing the incorrect concentration of coolant and distilled water can also result in engine overheating. The best bet is to perform a complete flush and fill. Bad Thermostat A thermostat is a heat-sensitive valve that opens and closes in response to engine temperature. Heated engine coolant passes through to the radiator when the thermostat is in the open position. In the closed position, it prevents the flow of coolant to speed up the warming of a cold engine. When the thermostat gets stuck in the closed position, coolant stays in the engine and quickly becomes overheated, resulting in engine overheating. Blocked Coolant Passageways Rust, dirt and sediment can all block or greatly impede the flow of coolant through the cooling system. This can limit the system’s ability to control engine temperature, which may result in higher operating temperatures and engine overheating. Once again, a flush and fill is recommended to remove debris. Faulty Radiator By passing through a series of tubes and fins, coolant temperature is reduced in the radiator. Leaks and clogging are some of the most common causes of radiator failure. Any disruption in the radiator’s function can lead to elevated engine temperature and overheating. Worn/Burst Hoses A hose that contains visual cracks or holes, or has burst will result in leaks and disrupt the flow of engine coolant. This can result in overheating. Bad Radiator Fan A fan blows air across the radiator fins to assist in reducing the temperature of the coolant. A fan that wobbles, spins freely when the engine is off, or has broken shrouds will not be able to reduce the temperature to proper level, thus possibly resulting in engine overheating. Loose or Broken Belt A belt is often the driving link that turns the water pump at the correct speed for proper coolant flow through the cooling system. If a belt is loose or broken, it cannot maintain the proper speed, thus resulting in poor coolant flow and ultimately, engine overheating. Faulty Water Pump Known as the ‘heart’ of the cooling system, the water pump is responsible for pressurising and propelling engine coolant through the cooling system. Any malfunction of the water pump, including eroded impeller vanes, seepage or wobble in the pump shaft, can prevent adequate coolant flow and result in engine overheating. Leaky Head Gasket: A leaky head gasket can allow coolant to seep into the engine's cylinders or crankcase. Symptoms include a loss of coolant with no visible external leaks, and white steam in the exhaust, especially after restarting the engine when it has sit for awhile. A leaky head gasket can be diagnosed by pressure testing the cooling system, or by using a "block checker" that pulls air from the cooling system into a cylinder that contains a special blue coloured leak detection liquid. If there are any combustion gases in the coolant, the colour of the liquid inside the detector will change from blue to green. A leaky head gasket can often be temporarily sealed by adding a sealer product to the cooling system. But for bad leaks or ones that cannot be stopped with sealer, the head gasket has to be replaced. Dragging brakes -- A disc brake caliper that is sticking or a parking brake that is not releasing may be making your engine work harder than normal to overcome the friction. Check the brakes and fix as needed. POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES OF ENGINE OVERHEATING If your engine is overheating, it may start to detonate. The engine may rattle and ping and lose power. If detonation continues, it may damage the rings, pistons and/or rod bearings. Overheating can also cause pisto scuffing. As the engine gets hotter and hotter, the pistons may swell to the point where there is no more room for expansion and they scrape against the cylinders, damaging the pistons and cylinders. Exhaust valves may also stick or scuff in their guides. This can damage the valves, guides and lead to a loss of compression. Another consequence of engine overheating may be a blown head gasket. Heat makes aluminium swell almost three times faster than cast iron. Thermal stress can distort the head and make it swell in areas that are hottest like those between exhaust valves in adjoining cylinders, and areas that have restricted coolant flow like the narrow area that separates the cylinders. The typical aluminium head swells most in the middle, which can crush the head gasket if the head gets too hot. This will usually cause the head gasket to leak compression between adjacent cylinders, or leak coolant into the cylinders. Engine overheating can also cause an overhead cam to seize and break. Engine overheating may also stress old radiator and heater hoses and cause them to burst under the additional pressure. Steam that is generated inside the cooling system can also damage radiators with plastic end tanks. WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR CAR SUDDENLY START OVER HEATING. At the first sign of overheating, shut off your air conditioner and open your windows: Doing so decreases the load on the engine and helps it cool off. If you’re stopped in traffic and the temperature gauge is rising, shift into Neutral or Park and rev the engine a little: Doing so makes the water pump and the fan speed up, which draws more liquid and air through the radiator. The increased air and liquid circulation helps cool things off. Try not to ride your brakes: In stop-and-go traffic, crawl along slowly, on little more than an idle, rather than moving up and then braking repeatedly. Brake drag increases the load on the engine and makes it heat up. If traffic is crawling, move up only when the gap between you and the vehicle in front of you gets too large. If you think that your vehicle is about to boil over, drive to the right-hand side of the road, open the hood, and sit there until things cool off. Remember, don’t open the radiator cap under these circumstances, and if your engine has boiled over, don’t add water until the engine is quite cool again. Use the heater to disperse engine heat. It may sound crazy, but it actually works. Flip the climate controls to vent, turn the heater all the way up, and turn the fan all the way up. If the weather is hot, the inside of the car will heat up quite a lot. Point the vents out the windows as much as possible to help reduce the temperature. Why this works: The heater in your car uses engine heat to warm air in the cabin. Running your heater full blast takes a significant amount of heat away from the engine, making it significantly cooler. Www.everydaycarz.com 1 Like |
Car Talk / Choosing The Right Oil For Your Car! by bigchica(m): 11:49pm On Sep 28, 2016 |
How To Pick The Right Motor Oil For Your Car There are many choices when it comes to picking the appropriate oil for your car's engine. How much do you value the engine in your car? The life of your engine depends in no small part on the quality of the oil you put in it - oil is its lifeblood. People typically don't pay much attention to their oil - oil is oil, right? To choose the right oil for your vehicle, ask yourself the following questions: What kind of oil have you been using? If your vehicle is running well, there’s no reason to switch brands. What kind of oil does your owner’s manual recommend? If your vehicle is still under warranty, using something other than the recommended oil may invalidate the warranty on a new vehicle. Do you live in a very cold or very hot climate? Is it mountainous? Are there sharp changes in temperature where you live? Multi-weight oils cover a range of temperatures. The lower the number before the “W,” the better the oil works in cold weather. How old is your vehicle? If you have an old vehicle that has been running on single- weight oil for most of its life, it has built up quite a bit of sludge because some single-weight oils don’t have detergent in them. If you suddenly switch to multi-viscosity oil, the detergent in it will free all the gook in your engine, and the gook will really foul things up. How worn is your vehicle’s engine? If your vehicle has logged a great many miles over several years and has been running on 30- or 40-single-weight oil, multi-weight oil isn’t consistently thick enough to lubricate the worn engine parts that have become smaller while wearing down, leaving wider spaces between them. To keep the oil thick enough to fill these gaps, switch to heavier single-weight oil as your vehicle gets older and starts to run more roughly or burn up oil more quickly. If you’ve been running on 30- weight oil, switch to 40-weight at least during the summer, when oil tends to thin out. The following list, as well as the car's owner's manual, will provide a good idea of what type of oil to use. It's also a good rule of thumb not to switch between types. If your car started with conventional, stick with that. If it first used synthetic, be wary about switching to conventional. Conventional Oil: This is the oil used in bulk at dealerships and is the cheapest at the auto store, too. Most adhere to API and SAE standards but offer little in the way of additive packages. This is good oil for owners that are particular about frequent oil changes and have low-mile but effective engines. Premium Conventional Oil: This is the standard new-car oil. Most leading brands have one for SL, or highest level, service. Most are available in the common viscosities. Car manufacturers usually specify 5W-20 or 5W-30 oil, though some require 10W-30. These three ratings cover just about every light- duty vehicle on the road, though this is changing as engines become more precise and fussy about specific types oil. Full-synthetic Oil: These oils are made for high-tech engines. If these oils pass stringent special tests (indicated by their labelling), it means they have superior, longer- lasting performance in all the critical areas, from viscosity index to protection against engine deposits, they flow better at low temperatures and maintain peak lubrication at high temperatures. While excellent oil, synthetics are about three times as expensive as conventional oil and not always necessary for most engines. Use the owner's manual as a guide. If it doesn't call for synthetic oil, using it will only be an additional expense that may not add anything to the engine's performance or life. Synthetic-blend Oil: This is essentially premium conventional oil hit with a dose of synthetic. They're formulated to offer better protection during heavier engine loads and the associated higher engine temperatures. These oils are popular with pick-up and SUV drivers because they do offer better protection, but usually cost only a fraction more than premium conventional oils. High-mileage Oil: More than 60 percent of vehicles on the road have more than 75,000 miles (120,701 kilometers) on the odometer. Playing to this growing market, oil refiners and labs developed high-mileage oils. Seal conditioners are added to the oil (the oil can be synthetic or conventional) to expand and increase the flexibility of internal engine seals. The conditioners are very precise and can benefit some engines while not affecting others. Taking Nigeria for example where Toyota is the most driven car, mechanics say that the best kinds of lubricants for the engine is 10W-30 or 10w-40 depending the region one is based. But they also advise that the latter should be used in hotter environments and the former in moderate environments. In Nigeria, you don’t need to take note of the number before the W because the weather does not get cold enough. Sludge is what happens in your engine when the oil additives and chemicals break down and turns the oil into gunk or tar-like substance (black custard). It can occur due to prolonged oil change intervals or due to high engine heat exposure. Sludge can cause your engine to seize from oil flow block. But if you only care about fuel economy, then you would want to buy the thinnest oil possible because there will be less restriction to oil flow in the engine, This is why manufacturers are now building for thinner oils like 5W-20 from 10W-30. If you only care about greater engine lifespan, then you would want the thickest oil available, because it offers you more protection from severe operations and greater protection from heat. Thicker oil can readily absorb and retain heat from the engine. Copied from http://www.everydaycarz.com.ng/2016/07/how-to-pick-right-motor-oil-for-your-car.html?m=1 2 Likes
