Celebrities / Famous French Fashion Designer "Givenchy" Dies At 91 by BolajiBanwo: 1:29am On Mar 13, 2018
French Fashion Designer "Givenchy" Dies At 91

French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy, who dominated the industry for more than three decades and whose clothes were worn by movie stars Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, has died at the age of 91.
The House of Givenchy confirmed on Monday via its official Twitter account.

"The House of Givenchy is sad to report the passing of its founder Hubert de Givenchy, a major personality of the world of French Haute Couture and a gentleman who symbolized Parisian chic and elegance for more than half a century. He will be greatly missed," the company announced.

Givenchy was part of the elite cadre of Paris-based designers including Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and his mentor, Christobal Balenciaga, that redefined fashion in the wake of World War II.

Born into an aristocratic family in the provincial city of Beauvais on Feb. 21, 1927, Givenchy struck out for Paris in his late teens, in the wake of World War II. Couturier Jacques Fath hired Givenchy on the strength of his sketches. He spent two years learning the basics of fashion design, from sketching to cutting and fitting haute couture styles.

After apprenticing with other top names, Givenchy founded his own house in 1952. His debut collection ushered in the concept of separates — tops and bottoms that could be mixed and matched, as opposed to head-to-toe looks that were the norm among Paris couture purveyors.

Givenchy gave up the fashion house in 1988 -- it has been under the ownership of luxury goods group LVMH since then -- with the founder retiring after his final collection in 1995

Romance / Viagra At 20: Experts Reveal Pros & Cons Of The World's Most Talked-about Drug by BolajiBanwo: 1:28pm On Feb 11, 2018
@Naijachiefwhip

It is the little blue pill, made in Britain, that revolutionised sex lives the world over

It is the little blue pill, made in Britain, that revolutionised sex lives the world over. Launched in 1998, this year Viagra turns 20 – and the best-known drug treatment for erectile dysfunction, prescribed to more than three million men in the UK, is going to be more easily available than ever.

From this spring, men will be able to buy it from a pharmacist without needing a prescription, providing they meet stringent medical criteria.

But despite being one of the most talked-about drugs of the 21st Century many myths and misconceptions still surround the treatment and the subject of erectile dysfunction.

Here, leading experts in the field reveal everything you never knew about Viagra and the things you really ought to…

Professor Roger Kirby, consultant urologist and director of The Prostate Centre in London, is a leading light in the field, having published more than 300 scientific papers on prostate tumours – and five years ago had treatment for prostate cancer himself.

He says: ‘Like all men who have had surgery for prostate cancer, I took medication for erectile dysfunction afterwards. Although techniques have improved vastly over the years, surgery in that area will always damage the nerves responsible for erections.

‘It takes time, but they do gradually recover. Taking Viagra, or a similar medication, helps that happen faster by stimulating blood supply to the area, which aids healing. That’s why we suggest that men start taking it as soon as they stop feeling tender after surgery.

‘I now tell patients that I recommend the same thing that I have done myself: a low dose of the drug every day with a larger dose as and when needed for activity.

Jo Coker is a psychosexual therapist and a spokeswoman for the College of Sexual Therapy and Relationships.

She says: ‘When Viagra launched, people thought it would be an instant solution to their flagging sex lives. But like all quick fixes and solutions in a pill, there are caveats.

‘Let’s not forget, there are two people in every couple and both need to be considered when drugs like this are being used. It can’t be a decision that just one person takes.

David Ralph is a consultant urologist at University College Hospital London and in Harley Street. He is president of the Sexual Advice Association.

He says: ‘Viagra is the best option we have for erectile dysfunction. But there are promising treatments in the pipeline for men who can’t take or tolerate the tablets, or get no effect from them.
Who can’t take it?

Viagra should not be used by men who have recently had a stroke or a heart attack, with low blood pressure or those with certain eye conditions.

Guidelines recommend cautiously prescribing it for men with any penile disorders, stomach ulcers or heart disease so again this should be evaluated with a GP.

It may be prescribed at a low dose for those with liver and kidney disease.

Business / Sterling Bank CEO And Founding Director, Yemi Adeola Retires by BolajiBanwo: 3:51am On Jan 14, 2018
Sterling Bank CEO And Founding Director, Yemi Adeola Retires

Sterling Bank Plc have announced that its founding Director and long-serving Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Yemi Adeola has notified the Board of Directors of his desire to retire with effect from 1 April 2018 after over 14 years of service on the Board. He will be succeeded by Abubakar Suleiman (Abu), currently Executive Director, Finance & Strategy, a role Abu has served in since May 2012.

Yemi’s banking career started in the then Nigeria International Bank Ltd now Citibank Nigeria Ltd in 1988 where he served in various capacities and rose to the position of Executive Director in 1998, one of the youngest officers and indeed one of the first Nigerian nationals to be appointed in that capacity with the Citigroup Inc’s Nigeria unit between February 1998 and May 2003. In July 2003, Yemi became the Deputy Managing Director 'DMD' of our legacy component, Trust Bank of Africa Limited. He was instrumental to the formation of Sterling Bank in 2006, served as Integration Director in the immediate post-merger phase and up until 2007 as Executive Director covering Commercial & Institutional Banking and later Corporate Banking prior to becoming CEO.

Mr. Yemi Adeola, CEO said:

‘Our Bank has grown materially in all respects over the past decade moving from being a marginal player on the fringes, to an established operator trusted by millions of people today. The achievements highlighted by the Chairman in his remarks have required huge personal sacrifice on the part of many people. I am extremely grateful to all of them for their support and know that Abu and his team can continue to count on this support in the months and years to come.

I would like to specifically thank our customers, the shareholders, the board, our staff and regulators amongst others for their support and goodwill. Sterling Bank is well set for the future and I believe that now is the right time for me to step down and pass on the baton to Abu. As a Bank, we have done well, are doing well and have great prospects for the future. Our institution has the resources both human and material to look forward and write a new chapter in its history. There are exciting choices for the new generation of leaders to make, especially with the increasing integration of Nigeria into the global economy, an increasing need for economic diversification in the face of a post-fossil fuels world, and the transformational impact of digital technologies on financial services. I am especially pleased that the board has chosen a successor from our internal talent pool further affirming the quality of senior leadership within the company and the long-term sustainability of our business model. I leave in place a team that has been central to what we have achieved over the past decade and have no doubt that they will successfully lead our institution to an even stronger position in the financial services market in the near-future.’

Piers Morgan Saved From Cancer

Former CNN News Anchor Piers Morgan, 52, was saved from CANCER after an eagle-eyed viewer spotted something alarming about his appearance on TV.

The Good Morning Britain host was warned by a melanoma expert that he had a concerning blemish on his chest - which he rushed to get checked out. Gillian Nuttall, founder of Melanoma UK, contacted Piers Morgan after seeing him in the ITV Serial Killer documentary.

Gillian said the mark, visible just above his open-neck shirt 'caught her eye' and 'really bothered' her, so she got in touch after viewing the episode in November. She emailed him to say: 'Piers, at the risk of sounding like a lunatic, I'm just watching your programme and there's a blemish on your chest. Have you had it checked?'

Expressing his gratitude to the eagle-eyed Gillian, Piers Morgan said: 'Thanks, Gillian. Oh the irony of a serial killer inadvertently helping to save my life. Merry Christmas!'

Health / Harvard Reveals Biggest Secret To Success And Happiness After 79 Years Of Study by BolajiBanwo: 11:58pm On Dec 26, 2017
Harvard Reveals Biggest Secret to Success and Happiness

Harvard spent 79 years studying the lives of 724 men to determine what keeps people healthy and happy. They discovered it has nothing to do with fame, wealth, social class, IQ, or genes, but instead, a single trait.

The director of the study, Robert Waldinger, a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, said the study revealed that our relationships impact powerfully on our health.

He also said the study uncovered these lessons about relationships:

Social connections are good for us; loneliness really kills.

While calling loneliness toxic, Waldinger said social connections made people happier and physically healthier. It made them live longer too.
On the other hand, he also said:

"People who are more isolated than they want to be from others find that they are less happy, their health declines earlier in midlife, their brain functioning declines sooner and they live shorter lives than people who are not lonely. And the sad fact is that at any given time, more than one in five Americans will report that they're lonely."

The quality of our close relationships matter.

Instead of focusing on the quantity, it's vital to focus on the quality of our friendships. Living in the midst of conflict affects our health. High-conflict marriages, for instance, affect our health negatively, perhaps more than getting a divorce. And living in the midst of warm, wholehearted relationships is protective.

Waldinger said they could tell which of their men was going to grow into a healthy, happy octogenarian by looking back at them in midlife:

"When we gathered together everything we knew about them at age 50, it wasn't their middle-age cholesterol levels that predicted how they were going to grow old, it was how satisfied they were in their relationships. The people who were the most satisfied in their relationships at age 50 were the healthiest at age 80."

Good relationships protect our brains, not just our bodies.

The study found that being attached to a relationship in your 80s is protective. Such people had sharper memories while people who were in relationships where they couldn't really count on the other person experienced gradual memory decline.

Arguments, Waldinger said, didn't affect the memories. They didn't matter as long as the octogenarian couples knew they could count on the other when the going got tough. "The good life," Waldinger concluded, "is built with good relationships."

10 Best Foreign Albums Of 2017

2017 saw full-length releases from rappers we know to be at the peak of their powers—Future (twice), Kendrick, and Drake all made a run at an album of the year—and proof from veterans, Jay-Z in particular, that he's still at the height of his. And, as always, a new crop of artists arrived on the scene. 2017 heralded the major label debuts from a new class of SoundCloud rappers like Lil Yachty, Lil Pump, and Lil Uzi Vert—to varying degrees of success.

There were far, far more than 50 great albums this year. Here is Complex's picks for the 10 best Foreign Albums of 2017.

10. Drake, 'More Life'

Label: Republic Records
Released: March 18

More Life is the work of an artist who doesn't want to be contained in any creative boxes, but is also in search of honest inspiration. It isn't his most definitive work by any means, nor will it be a classic. Partnering with the likes of South Africa's Black Coffee and the UK's Giggs, Jorja Smith, Sampha, and Skepta not only help him gain saturation in these areas, but also big up artists he's been a fan of. Perhaps this is the product of his Canadian upbringing or his world travels, but it's both a calculated commercial maneuver and a testament to his true enjoyment of art—ideas that shouldn't be treated as mutually exclusive.

9. Daniel Caesar, 'Freudian'

Label: Golden Child Recordins
Released: August 25

This is apparently marriage proposal music, because people keep popping the big question at Daniel Caesar concerts. Not a single shorty said “no,” and can you blame them? You’re there, taking in“Get You” live, tears in your eyes, emo as Bleep—who’s gonna say no to marriage in a situation like that? Freudian is one of those R&B albums that are more love than lust, unless you’re into crying during sex. Then this is the perfect record for you. —Angel Diaz

8. Lil Uzi Vert, 'Luv Is Rage 2'

Label: Atlantic Records
Released: August 25

Of all the rappers to break out in 2017, Lil Uzi Vert was, by leaps and bounds, the most compelling. Springboarded by the idiosyncratic "XO Tour Llif3," Vert crafted a full-length album that's as weird and forward-thinking as its best song. It's an album that gets better with every listen, justifying its tracklist length as hidden gems continue to emerge (as of this writing it's "For Real," a stunningly strange, spare beat that showcases off Uzi's tossed-off charisma, that is a favorite).

7. Migos, 'Culture'

Label: Quality Control Music
Released: January 27

Even without “Bad and Boujee,” the buoyant track that got the Migos a Donald Glover co-sign and blew them up into megastars, Culture would still be one of the best albums released this year. Get past the title track kickoff, where an overexuberant DJ Khaled throws everything off-balance, and Culture is front-to-back bangers, a touch under an hour with four perfectly placed features from the right rappers.

6. Tyler, the Creator, 'Flower Boy'

Label: Columbia Records
Released: July 21

Flower Boy is the definitive statement in an evolving conversation Tyler, The Creator has been having since he burst onto the scene as a petulant teenager. In many ways, it's also the end to that conversation in part to his strengthened musical skill set, and part to his maturation as a man.

Serving as his fourth studio album, the anxiety and excitement that come with personal evolution run through the 14-track project. Tyler's art has always been inherently selfish: He makes what he wants, when he wants. But for a guy who has made a career of extravagant, self-pleasing showmanship, an invitation to truly learn more about the mastermind feels like an offering to the people.

5. Sampha, 'Process'

Label: Young Turks
Released: February 3

Sampha broke into mainstream consciousness by way of Drake's 2013 single "Too Much," which sampled his ballad of the same name. It feels like he's been around for some time now, popping up sporadically with a handful of guest contributions to artists much more famous than he (add Kanye and Beyoncé to that list), fueling anticipation for a full length release from the London-born artist.

Process , his debut album, satisfies that hunger, providing a clear gaze into the mind and spirit of a man who is still very much a work in progress. With the combination of his hypnotically haunting vocals and pithy but divulging lyrics, song like "Timmy's Prayer," "Under," and "What Shouldn't I Be" dunk his listeners in a pool of emotions, but avoid drowning them in melancholy or a banal presentation. Tracks like "Plastic 100°C" and "Reverse Faults" feel like someone coming up for much-needed oxygen, revealing fully formed thoughts that are examined in the reflection of the water's surface.

4. Future, 'HNDRXX'

Label: Epic/Sony Records
Released: February 24

Much has been written about the bifurcation of Future’s artistic self as displayed on the two albums he dropped back to back in February. Where FUTURE is the rough, raw, and rugged trap-leaning collection of immensely hummable jagged edges, HNDRXX is the smoother, more polished, radio-ready collection. Only problem is we’re talking about Future. Conflating artistic output with one’s supposed private life is dangerous because, in reality, who really knows what’s going on behind closed doors? But we’re talking about Future. The guy who told us this is the album is he wanted to make his entire career. The guy who went through one of the messiest celebrity breakups in recent memory; one that resulted not only in the loss of custody of a child, but a Jay Z lyric warning others of the pitfalls of ill-managed relationships lest you wind up like Future. So when you hear Future say “this codeine ain’t got nothing to do with my little child,” it’s easy to connect the dots.

3. SZA, 'Ctrl'

Label: Top Dawg Entertainment
Released: June 2017

“How do I satisfy myself sonically?" was SZA's guiding inquiry when creating CTRL, but the question could just as easily been, simply: “How do I satisfy myself?” After several uneven EPs that failed to break through to a larger audience, CTRL offers what S and Z lack—fully realized, cohesive production, and a wildly vulnerable, crystalline snapshot of the 27-year-old singer. It also shows you who she’s striving to become—as an artist and as a human.

2. Jay Z, '4:44'

Label: ROC Nation LLC
Released: June 30

No one expected 4:44. There were rumors that Jay Z would release an album that spoke to and answered for the hurt his wife displayed throughout her multiplatform tour de force, Lemonade, but no one—if we’re keeping it a buck—expected it to be good. It’s not that Hov’s never been contrite—songs like “You Must Love Me” and “Song Cry” prove he can bare his soul with the best of them—it’s more that he didn’t instill much confidence in the lead-up to the album’s release. The guest verses he contributed to songs like “Pop Style” and “I Got the Keys” featured stilted flows and stodgy wordplay. He seemed to be knocking the cobwebs off; not yet ready for primetime. Also, Jay Z is a single year younger than Rakim and has a net worth hovering around $810 million. Rap being, as they say, a young person’s game, Hov would be forgiven for not having the wherewithal to crank out a classic rap album this late in the game.
1. Kendrick Lamar, 'Damn'

1. Kendrick Lamar, 'Damn'

Label: Top Dawg Entertainment
Released: April 14

Kenny’s third studio release (or his fourth, depending on who you ask) shows off the most important thing an artist can give to their fans—growth. Everything Lamar has attempted in his near-mythical run of a career to date, he perfected on Damn. The radio singles have staying power, there are no skips, and it’s digestible. It's as ambitious as good kid, M.A.A.D. city and To love-vendor A Butterfly, yet breezes by, in many ways Lamar's most accessible album to date. But still, my favorite thing about the album are the random Kid Capri drops, which make it feel like I’m listening to a ’90s DJ mixtape and take me back to the time I fell in love with this sport called rap music.

Damn is good kid, M.A.A.D. city’s true sequel, reworking the religious undertones and stories of his upbringing in Compton of his major label debut, but Damn is more polished, more mature, more intricate, more perfected. The ideas are essentially the same, but this time around he’s a successful superstar rapper dealing with things he’s never had to deal with before, and a bird's eye view of the life he's left behind. Lamar showed true vulnerability on this album and in turn opened his chakras and wiped the crust out of our third eyes, a true genius at work.

Celebrities / Selena Gomez's Mom Taken To Hospital Afta Learning About 'serious'bieber Romance by BolajiBanwo: 4:54pm On Dec 19, 2017
@Ultrajamzng

If the news hasn't sent you to the hospital at least once this year, then you're probably not paying close enough attention. Of course, by "news" I mean poorly constructed articles about the supposed dating lives of people infinitely more successful and important than you. These articles are traditionally rife with words like alleged and reportedly, and are almost always accompanied by an all-caps headline that even a pun-loving fifth grader would be embarrassed to have permanently attached to their writing career.

Speaking of hospitals, Selena Gomez's mother Mandy Teefey—one of those aforementioned people who are more successful and important than you—was reportedly taken to one after being informed of the seriousness with which her daughter and Justin Bieber are treating their apparent reunion.

Predictably, this fresh #news cake comes from the bakers at TMZ. According to their painful-to-read report, Teefey got "so worked up" when she was filled in on recent Bieber x Gomez developments. TMZ's sources said Teefey was voluntarily transported for transport after a family member requested authorities perform a welfare check on her at a hotel in the Los Angeles area. That same day, these sources claimed Teefey had a "heated" discussion with Gomez during which the singer revealed she and Bieber were undergoing couples therapy. Teefey was released later that day.

I have to get this article to 250 words for Google-related reasons, so I'm going to use this final bit to remind you that the lawsuit regarding Bieber's insta-classic "Sorry" has been dismissed. That's good news, and so is the fact that this article will boast 274 words by the time I type out the final period.

Rande Gerber, a businessman and longtime friend of the actor, told MSNBC’s “Headliners” that Clooney once gave 14 friends $1 million each and paid their taxes for a year.

"There's a group of guys that we call ‘The Boys.' George had called me and ‘The Boys' and said, ‘Hey, mark September 27, 2013 on your calendar. Everyone's going to come to my house for dinner,” Gerber recalled. When George's dinner guests arrived they found black suitcases at each of their spots around a table, and the Suburbicon director shared a special message to the men who helped him early in his career.

Rande explained, "George begins to say, 'Listen, I want you guys to know how much you've meant to me and how much you mean to me in my life. I came to L.A., I slept on your couch. I'm so fortunate in my life to have all of you and I couldn't be where I am today without all of you. So, it was really important to me that while we're still all here together, that I give back. So I want you all to open your suitcases.'" Inside was $1 million. As Gerber remembered it, "Every one of us—14 of us—got a million dollars. Every single one of us. We're in shock. Like, what is this? .

He goes, 'I know we've all been through some hard times, some of you are still going through it. You don't have to worry about your kids, you don't have to worry about, you know, school, you don't have to worry about paying your mortgage.'" And George said, ‘Not only that, I have paid everyone's taxes so this million dollars is yours.'"

Gerber described this never-before-heard story as a testament to Clooney's character, adding, "This is who George is."

Events / 25,000 People Expected At Olamide Live In Concert ‘OLIC’ — Organisers by BolajiBanwo: 9:59pm On Dec 13, 2017
The organisers of the 4th Olamide Live in Concert “OLIC4’’ on Wednesday in Lagos said that the concert was expected to have about 25,000 people in attendance.

The Manager, Mr Alex Okeke, gave the indication on the sidelines of the news conference heralding the activities lined up for one of the biggest concerts in Lagos, OLIC4 on Tuesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the popular hip-hop artist, Olamide Adedeji, popularly known as “Olamide Baddo’’, is a household name for his records mostly in his mother tongue “Yoruba’’.

He busted into the entertainment scene in 2011 with his debut album “Rapsodi’’, which was mainly tunes in Yoruba language and thereafter signed for a record label YBNL.

In November 2013, Olamide released one of the most sold out albums named “Baddest Guy Ever Liveth’’ and followed it by “Durosoke’’ and “Yemi my Lover’’.

Olamide, however, became the first Nigerian to sign an endorsement deal with a private company Ciroc.

The OLIC concert will take place on Dec. 17 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere in Lagos. It is expected to start by 12 p.m. and end by 6 p.m.

The three previous editions were held at the Eko Hotels and Suite, Victoria Island and had attracted large audience which the organisers described as organic.

Okeke said that the concert venue was shifted to accommodate for people who are desirous of attending the live concert, adding that the partnerships with Lagos State was icing on the cake .

“As we know Olamide to be a street musician, he wants more people to enjoy him; hence, we have a change of venue to accommodate others.

“We want to take the concert to another level, what we want to do is to use OLIC to take Lagos to the world.

“Taking Lagos to the world means that at the end of the concert many all over the world will want to come for the next edition and that is tourism,’’ he said

Celebrities / Woman Raises $34,000K For Homeless Man Who Spent His Last $20 To Keep Her Safe by BolajiBanwo: 1:57am On Nov 23, 2017
@Naijachiefwhip

Last month while travelling to Philadelphia, Kate McClure didnt expect that she will run out of gas when suddenly her car stopped. she never knew that her misfortune would give her the opportunity to change someone else’s life.

When Kate pulled over on the side of I-95, McClure, 27, she was approached by a homeless man named Johnny. She was apprehensive at first, but Johnny told her to get back into her car and to lock the doors while he walked to get her help. He went to a nearby gas station, used his last $20 fill a can and brought it back to fill up her car.

Grateful, but without a dollar to repay him, McClure promised she would come back with something.
Kate with her boyfriend, Mark D’Amico launched a GoFundMe campaign, for the homeless man putting an ambitious $10,000 goal and hoping to rein in a few hundred dollars to book Johnny a motel for a few nights where he could clean up, and start to get back on his feet.

As of Wednesday, November 22, 2017, the campaign has garnered more than $34,000 in donations, and continues to grow.
“It just blew up,” McClure said, noting that donors have come forward with $5, $10 or even several hundred after she’s shared the GoFundMe to various Facebook groups.

Johnny, who’s 34, told McClure and D’Amico he has been homeless for about a year. He said he was previously a certified paramedic, and also served in the Marine Corps
