Nairaland / General / 4 World Bank Officials Drowned In Ekiti Dam by bolla1129(m): 3:01pm On Aug 25, 2016
Four World Bank officials had been reportedly drowned at Egbe Dam in Egbe Ekiti, Gbonyin Local Government Area of Ekiti State, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

NAN reports that Egbe Dam is the biggest of the six dams in the state.

Mrs Folasade Akinrinmola, the chairman of the council and the state police command confirmed this development to newsmen on Thursday.

Akinrinmola said that the incident which occurred on Wednesday’s night involved a team of seven contractors employed by the World Bank on an assessment mission to the dam.

She said that the team had commenced work on Tuesday night from a section of the dam and moving to the other section when the incident happened on Wednesday.

She said that traditional ruler of Egbe notified her of the incident.

“We immediately mobilised a rescue team and an ambulance, and in the process, those wearing life jackets were rescued.

“The rescued people were the ones who told us that others were in the water.

“The bodies of those that had drowned were later retrieved by the local fishermen.”

“One of the dead victims was said to be the son of the leader of the team who providentially escaped unhurt.

“We believe that they came to Ekiti based on some of the proposals we had written on the dam on how it can be put to use.

“We believe that the World Bank has started work on the dam based on their findings,” she said.

The council boss who described the incident as sad and unfortunate , added that the bodies of the dead had since been deposited at the mortuary in Ode-Ekiti, the headquarters of the council area.

DSP Alberto Adeyemi, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Ekiti State Police Command, also confirmed the incident.

“It is true that the boat transporting the team capsized, four of them died while three survived,” he said. (NAN)

Nairaland / General / Ambassadorial Nominees Unable To Recite National Anthem, Pledge by bolla1129(m): 9:09am On Jul 27, 2016
The Senate on Tuesday began the screening of the 47 ambassadorial nominees sent to it by President Muhammadu Buhari for legislative approval.

Buhari had on June 9 sent to the Senate 47 names of Nigerians to be screened and confirmed as career diplomats.

The President, in the letter personally signed by him and dated June 6, 2016, requested the Senate to approve the list at the shortest possible time.

There was, however, drama during the exercise as some of the nominees, who were drilled by members of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs chaired by Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, could not recite the national anthem and the national pledge smoothly.

The nominees were asked questions ranging from diplomatic issues to the names of the senators representing their states, their geopolitical zones and the states in them, how many local government areas in their states, how many lawmakers in the Senate, among others.

While some of them stuttered while reciting either the anthem or the pledge, others missed their lines in the process.

Vivia Okeke (Anambra State), who was asked to recite the anthem, murmured when she got to the second to the last line of the first stanza, “One nation bound in freedom.” The panelists however came to her rescue.

Ibrahim Isah from Niger State, who is currently serving in Turkey, was asked to recite the national pledge. When he reached the third to the last line, he said, “To defend her unity and integrity,” instead of “to defend her unity and uphold her honour and glory.”

Hakeem Balogun from Lagos State, who currently serves in the United States, recited the old national anthem to a point and was asked to start again and he got it right.

Jane Ndem from Benue State, who currently serves in Japan, got the number of lawmakers in the Senate (109); she also got the names of senators representing her state but when she was asked to name 12 states in Nigeria and their capital, she got 11 but named Lagos and Lagos as its capital instead of Ikeja.

Shakirat Ogundero from Oyo State was able to name two out of three presidential candidates in the 2015 election – Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari.

Baba Garba, while reciting the pledge, skipped the “to serve Nigeria with all my strength” line, he returned to it and skipped “to defend her unity” again.

Janet Bisong from Delta State, while apologising for not being able to state the number of local government areas in her state, was interrupted by one of the panelists, Senator James Manager, who is from Delta, saying, “You know it; it’s 25.”

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, who led the nominees before the panel, after the exercise was postponed to Wednesday, however, said the reports of nominees not been able to recite the anthem and the pledge, which were already trending online, were not true.

But a senator in the panel, in a chat with journalists after the session, said Enang lied on the performance of the nominees.

“That was a lie. Everybody saw what happened. We were there; journalists were there; the cameras and the tapes were there. How can diplomats not know the anthem and the pledge of their country? If it were lawmakers now, he (Enang) would come for us,” he said.

Nairaland / General / Identical Twins Anna And Lucy Decinque Share A Boyfriend by bolla1129(m): 1:29pm On Mar 17, 2016
Identical twins Anna and Lucy DeCinque, 30, appeared on a special episode of Australian talk show The Insight to discuss how identical they really are. They are so identical they actually share a boyfriend. It works, just hear them out!

"We've had separate boyfriends before, but they didn't understand our closeness. Ben understands we want to be together all the time," because he is a twin (albeit a fraternal one) as well. One of the twins - neither the show nor any site covering their appearance identified them by name because it's too hard to tell who is who - said it's Ben's fellow twin-iness that makes him a good boyfriend to both of them: "He understands the twin thing and the very close bond we have with each other." The three of them share a room at the twins' mother's house.

The twins told Perth Now that they are not yet thinking about pregnancy, but when one of them does become pregnant, "We would have to be exactly the same - even if we went through IVF at the same time," because their bodies need to be exactly the same always.

Perth Now also reports that the women have spent nearly $250,000 on cosmetic surgeries over the past 10 years to ensure they look exactly alike.

Nairaland / General / Brandi Chastain To Donate Her Brain For C.T.E. Research by bolla1129(m): 4:54pm On Mar 03, 2016
SAN JOSE, Calif. — The retired soccer player Brandi Chastain remains best known for scoring the winning shootout goal in the 1999 World Cup final against China and for the jersey-shedding celebration that followed.

Now 47, a mother and a coach, Chastain hopes her latest move will do more for soccer than that. She has agreed to donate her brain to researchers at Boston University, pioneers in the study of concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease.

C.T.E., believed to be caused by subconcussive blows to the head, is a hot topic in sports like boxing and football. But C.T.E. has also been found in several male soccer players, and researchers believe that heading the ball is a primary culprit.

No female athletes have been found to have had C.T.E. — it has been found in the brains of women with histories of head trauma — but the sample size has been small. Researchers at Boston University have examined 307 brains, most of which belonged to athletes. Only seven of them were women’s.

But with soccer’s worldwide popularity and its growth among girls inspired by the likes of the United States’ women’s national soccer team, researchers are eager to learn more. For now, C.T.E. can be reliably diagnosed only with a brain examination after death.
Chastain is the second national team member to decide to donate her brain, after Cindy Parlow Cone. Both women, and several others from the 1999 team, have argued against heading in youth soccer. In November, U.S. Soccer announced stricter standards for players under 14, although Chastain and others believe that they did not go far enough.

Chastain spoke about her decision to donate her brain in San Jose, where she was born and raised. She also spends much of her time there coaching her 9-year-old son’s team; assisting on the varsity team at a Bellarmine, a private high school; and assisting her husband, Jerry Smith, the longtime head coach of the Santa Clara University women’s team. The following is an edited and condensed version of that conversation.

Q. Why donate your brain for study?

The N.F.L.’s Tragic C.T.E. Roll CallFEB. 3, 2016
A. If there’s any information to be gleaned off the study of someone like myself, who has played soccer for 40 years, it feels like my responsibility — but not in a burdensome way. People talk about what the ’99 group did for women’s soccer. They say, “Oh, you left a legacy for the next generation.” This would be a more substantial legacy — something that could protect and save some kids, and to enhance and lift up soccer in a way that it hasn’t before. That was the impetus for saying yes. If we can learn something, we should. And I won’t need it.

A. There are definitely days when I turn a corner and I’m like, “Why did I come into this room?” I have definitely, from time to time, thought, “Hmmm, I wonder if this is connected to the past 40 years of playing sports.” Soccer wasn’t the only thing I played. It’s crossed my mind. I do wonder about the ramifications over the next 20 years when I should be fully functioning and still doing things I like or want to do. I try not to get hung up on those things, because it doesn’t really matter at this point. You just don’t know.

Nairaland / General / Toilet Restaurant by bolla1129(m): 1:14pm On Dec 30, 2015
Bog-standard restaurant! New toilet-themed restaurant where diners eat out of bidets opens in China

All of them come in individual, toilet-like vessels, from bidets to potties to - in the case of the ice cream - little cups, where the plumbing at the back forms a dainty handle for diners to hold their end-of-meal digestif.
The restuarant itself is equipped to resemble a bathroom, with showers attached to the walls and seats that look like toilet bowls topped with cushions in the shape of large piles of poo.
Toilet restaurants have become popular across China, with cities including Chonqing, Shanghai, Kunming and Hangzhou boasting their own loo chains, and others in Korea and Japan.

Beijing's version - Pian pian man wu, which translates as 'House full of poo' - has an extensive menu covering dishes that also includes the apparently signature 'super constipation black dry s***' ice cream, in this case topped with red beans and sprinkles in a mini squat toilet and coming at a price of 26RMB (around £2.60).
Visitors may be surprised to find so may toilets in a restaurant, where many other eateries in China do not actually have their own toilet, and patrons are required to relieve themselves in public lavatories in the street outside.

Seated toilets like the ones that feature in the dinnerwear at these establishments are also less common in China, as hygiene tends to dictate a preference for squatters.
In Beijing, a municipal law literally states that 'Only two flies' are allowed in a public toilet at any one time.
Yet China is no stranger to quirky themed restaurants - including those of a less lavatorial nature.
Beijing boasts a string of weird dining experiences that include a Kung-fu themed restaurant, where waiters perform karate chops as they deliver dishes, a Hello Kitty restaurant, and an Eighties schoolroom restaurant where entry is only on production of ID that shows you would have been at school in the decade.
Outside of Asia, themed restaurants can be just as bizarre.
The Hospitalis restaurant recently opened in Riga, Latvia, giving the chance to eat cakes that look like human organs and bandages on a dentist's chair and be served by waiters in doctor and nurse uniforms - or opt to be tied in a straitjacket and have their meal spoonfed to them.

Nairaland / General / HID Awolowo Dies 67 Days To 100th Birthday by bolla1129(m): 6:51am On Sep 20, 2015
The matriarch of the Awolowo dynasty, Chief (Mrs.) Hannah Idowu is dead.

She died on Saturday at exactly 3.15am at her Ikenne home. Mama, also known as Yeye Oodua, who would have been 100 years on November 25, was said to have attended a meeting of her forthcoming centenary birthday earlier in the day before retiring into her room, where she breathed her last.

According to a statement signed by her eldest daughter, Mrs. Omotola Oyediran, on behalf of the family, she died having spent the last day in the company of her children, grand children, great grand children and close family members.

The statement read in part, “She shared a precious few minutes with them when she went in to pray for them, as they met to plan her centenary birthday.

“They sang her a befitting song as she came in and she continued to pray for them. She died a couple of hours later, as she had always wished, surrounded by her children, grand children and great grand children.”

Among early callers at the Ikenne country home of the Awolowos were the Secretary to the Ogun State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa; the state deputy governor, Mrs. Yetunde Onanuga; the First Lady, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun; and the former governor of the state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel among others.

Adeoluwa, described the death of Mama HID as ‘very shocking’ adding that it was painful that she died when the preparation for her centenary birthday had reached an advanced stage. He said the state government would be fully involved in the funeral ceremonies.

He said, “She was a mother to all of us. Mama had a very close relationship with His Excellency, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and the government of Ogun State will be fully involved.”

Otunba Gbenga Daniel said the Yoruba race and the nation have lost a matriarch. He described her demise as the “end of an era.”

He, however, promised that the members of the Awolowo political family left behind by mama would “keep the flag flying.”

The Unity Party of Nigeria governorship candidate in the April 11 governorship election, Mr. Rotimi Paseda, in his condolence message described the late HID Awolowo as, “a timeless heroine and a symbol of the unity of the Yoruba race and an epitome of humility.”

Other sympathisers who visited the Awolowos to condole with them were the state Secretary of the Social Democratic Party, Mr. Abimbola Awofeso; and the APC senatorial candidate for Ogun East in the last elections, Mr. Dapo Abiodun, among others.

'She is finally at peace in the arms of God': Bobbi Kristina Brown dies six months after she was found unconscious in bathtub at age 22

Bobbi Kristina Brown has died aged 22 - six months after she was found unconscious in a bathtub.
The aspiring singer was rushed to hospital and placed in a medically-induced coma on January 31 after she was discovered face-down in the water-filled tub at her townhouse in Roswell, Georgia.
She was later transferred to Peachtree Christian Hospice, where her distraught family and loved ones maintained a bedside vigil and eventually said their goodbyes as her condition deteriorated.
She passed away, surrounded by her family, at the hospice on Sunday - just three years after her famous mother, singer Whitney Houston, died aged 48 in a bathtub at a hotel in Beverly Hills.
According to TMZ, officials are planning to treat the death of Bobbi Kristina - who was found in the tub with bruises on her face and body, swollen lips and a missing tooth - as a murder investigation.
The person of interest in the case will reportedly be her boyfriend, Nick Gordon.
The Houston family said on Sunday night that Bobbi Kristina 'is finally at peace in the arms of God.'
In a statement via a representative, they said: 'Bobbi Kristina Brown passed away July, 26 2015, surrounded by her family. She is finally at peace in the arms of God. We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months.'

Politics / Obama Praises Nigerian Leader For Pursuing Safety, Security by bolla1129(m): 10:34pm On Jul 20, 2015
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama welcomed Nigeria's new president to the Oval Office on Monday and praised him for working to bring "safety, security and peace" to a nation challenged by economic strains, a history of corruption and violence unleashed by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram.
Obama met with President Muhammadu Buhari less than eight weeks after Buhari took office to underscore the importance the U.S. attaches to good relations with Nigeria.

The president said Buhari had "a very clear agenda in defeating Boko Haram and extremists of all sorts inside of his country. And he has a very clear agenda in terms of rooting out the corruption that too often has held back the economic growth and prosperity of his country."

Obama, speaking to reporters at the outset of the meeting, said the U.S. hoped to partner with the African nation "so that Nigeria ends up being an anchor not only of prosperity and stability in the eastern part of the continent, but can also be an outstanding role model for developing countries around the world." Nigeria actually is in the western part of the continent; the White House said Obama misspoke.

He said he would discuss with Buhari how the two nations can cooperate on counter-terrorism and how the U.S. "can be helpful in addressing some of the corruption issues that have held Nigeria back."
Buhari, for his part, said Nigeria would be "ever grateful" to the U.S. for its support of free elections in his country. Buhari said U.S. and European pressures to ensure the election was "fair and credible led us to where we are now."
Buhari met earlier Monday with Vice President Joe Biden. Buhari adviser Femi Adesina said in a statement that during a discussion on terrorism, the vice president counseled that victory cannot come from military options alone. Military options "must be combined with strong socio-economic support programs, VP Biden said, promising that the U.S would work with Nigeria in that direction," the Nigerian aide said.
U.S. relations with Nigeria soured over failures by the government and military, including the inability to locate more than 200 school girls, most of them Christian, who were kidnapped by Boko Haram from the northern town of Chibok in April 2014. The abduction led to international condemnation and a campaign to "Bring Back Our Girls" that reached as far as the White House.

Then-President Goodluck Jonathan was angered by the U.S. refusal to sell his government helicopter gunships and retaliated by halting a U.S. military training program.

Relations are now expected to improve under Buhari, a 72-year-old former military dictator who has pledged allegiance to democracy and promised to address U.S. concerns.

Obama extended his invitation for a visit to Buhari almost immediately after he was declared the winner of the March election.

"This feels to us like Nigeria is at an important moment in which there can be real reforms across the board," Grant Harris, the senior director for African affairs at the National Security Council, told reporters last week. "We're looking forward to what we can do with a president who has staked out an agenda that we think is the right agenda at the right time."

Nigeria's new leader has been criticized for being slow to form a Cabinet. He has yet to name any ministers.
Last week, Buhari fired the entire top echelon of the military, which he has accused of corruption that prevents what once was Africa's mightiest armed force from curbing the Islamist insurgency based in Nigeria's northeast. The insurgency has killed more than 13,000 people and driven another 1.5 million from their homes.

Besides the Oval Office meeting with Obama, Buhari is to meet with Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and other senior administration officials.

Nairaland / General / President Buhari's Speech To All Nigerian.... by bolla1129(m): 10:50pm On Jul 16, 2015
Read President Buhari's EID-el-Fitr Message To Nigerians

Read below:

Fellow Compatriots,

I greet and felicitate with you all, especially our citizens of the Islamic faith on this auspicious occasion of the 2015 Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

I congratulate all those who have successfully completed the Ramadan fast in keeping with the injunction of our Creator.

Although we have come to the end of this year’s month of Ramadan, I believe that a greater acceptance by Nigerians of its key lessons of self-denial and sacrifice will serve our dear country well as we strive to overcome our present challenges, undo the damage done by years of bad governance and accelerate the pace of national development.

Reviewing our dire circumstances and the many missed opportunities of the past, some commentators and observers have said that this is Nigeria’s last chance to get its act together and finally begin to fulfill its God-given potential for greatness.

While not going that far, I certainly believe that now, more than ever before, our country needs greater self-denial, sacrifice and patriotism from all of its citizens, if we are to quickly recover from our numerous problems and start moving in a positive direction.

This current period of our life as a nation offers us a great opportunity to break from the vicious triangle of insecurity, corruption and under-development. We must collectively resolve to seize this opportunity and unite to confront our problems.

I remain wholly committed to giving the required leadership towards undoing the wrongs of the past, ensuring that Nigeria truly begins to unlock its great potential and that the benefits of our immense national resources are shared and enjoyed by all, not just by successive cabals of corrupt leaders and their cronies.

I was very aware of your high expectations when I assumed office and I reassure you, my fellow citizens, that since my inauguration on the 29th of May this year, I have been working with utmost dedication to meticulously plan and tackle the many national challenges which we identified and promised to resolve.

To succeed however, I need your continued support, understanding and patience.

I fully understand and share the thirst of my long-suffering compatriots for corruption-free government institutions that work efficiently to deliver visible development for the benefit of all citizens.

I also share the feelings of those who think that we should be moving faster. But I urge them and all Nigerians to trust that my commitment to real and positive change in our nation is as firm as ever.

There is indeed much work to be done, but we must do it well and carefully to ensure that the great opportunity which we now have is not lost to the “business as usual” group who selfishly or shortsightedly prefer a status quo that panders to their personal or group interests.

The adverse effects of years of rot, corruption, inept and bad governance on our nation are immense, but certainly not insurmountable if we all resolve now to place the well-being of our nation above all other considerations and work whole-heartedly with the present administration to achieve greater peace and security across the nation, and reposition our country for faster economic development and progress.

May Almighty Allah continue to guide us and bless our dear nation.

I wish you all happy Eid-el- Fitr celebrations.

Politics / Unsinkable Sepp......fifa Scandal: Sepp Blatter Wins Another Term As President.. by bolla1129(m): 6:53pm On May 29, 2015
CNN)FIFA President Sepp Blatter clung to power Friday, winning a vote for a fifth-term despite a week marked by arrests, investigations in the United States and Switzerland and questions about whether he is the right man for the job.

Blatter failed to get the required 140 votes in the first round of voting at the FIFA World Congress in Zurich, Switzerland, with 133 votes compared to 73 for Jordan's Prince Ali bin al-Hussein. But with the writing on the wall -- since Blatter would only need a simple majority of votes in the next round to prevail -- Prince Ali then conceded.

It's the latest development in an unprecedented firestorm surrounding soccer's powerful, polarizing governing body.

This week alone, Swiss authorities announced their investigation into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bid process. And U.S. authorities unveiled a sweeping, scathing indictment against 14 individuals, several of whom were FIFA officials arrested in Zurich.

Just how did Blatter survive? There's no better political operator and his knack for getting off clean -- or at least without being directly tied to wrongdoing in the soccer world -- is uncanny.

Then there's the matter of the voters and their loyalties to Blatter.

Part of it is the system itself. There are 209 member associations within FIFA, and each of their votes counts the same. That means a vote from China, with about 1.4 billion citizens, carries the same weight as a vote from the Cook Islands, with about 11,000 citizens.

And, corruption or not, the FIFA gravy train provides quite a bit of gravy. The organization's executive committee members get $300,000 a year plus $500 per day for expenses. If you're on official FIFA business, you can expect flying first class and staying in five-star hotels.

The member associations benefit big-time, including $500,000 payouts linked to World Cup profits. That's a sizable chunk of change that goes a lot further in places where there are fewer people to share it.

No surprise, then, that many of these organizations -- especially in Africa, Asia and the Americas -- have traditionally been loyal to Blatter, given his commitment to divvying up the largesse of FIFA, which has $1.5 billion in the bank.
