Politics / Chinese Underground Churches Expose Rift by bombay: 12:29am On Jun 25, 2009
Unregistered churches are attracting millions of worshippers in China, exposing an enduring rift between the government and the Vatican.

China broke off relations with the Vatican under Chairman Mao but over the past couple of years ties seemed to be warming up.

A state-controlled church is popular, but the underground parishioners say it is not the real church. From the state's perspective, these believers are loyal to the pope, not the Communist Party.

In 2007, Pope Benedict sent a letter to underground Catholics in China, encouraging them to reunite with the official church. But a central conflict remains -- the Pope maintains the right to appoint bishops, a right China maintains belongs to the government.

And although the underground churches operate with little interference, persecution does persist.

Politics / Louisiana, Mayor Ray Nagin, Was Quarantined In China by bombay: 12:26am On Jun 25, 2009
New Orleans, Louisiana, Mayor Ray Nagin, who was quarantined in China after possible exposure to the H1N1 virus, was released Wednesday to continue an economic development trip.

Nagin told CNN he had left the country in the morning and was headed to Australia.

The mayor had been quarantined since Sunday after flying on a plane that also carried a passenger who is being treated
for symptoms suspected to be from the virus, commonly known as swine flu, his staff said.

Ceeon Quiett, the mayor’s director of communications, told CNN that Nagin had been sitting beside a passenger who “exhibited the symptoms of H1N1,” but Nagin showed no signs of illness.

Politics / Uk 'cocaine Capital Of Europe' by bombay: 11:51pm On Jun 24, 2009
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said the UK is Europe's largest cocaine market - with more than one million regular users.

But its report revealed the quality of the Class A drug has declined dramatically in recent years.

A crackdown on traffickers has pushed prices up and led to dealers cutting even more.

Some seizures by police revealed substances being passed off as cocaine that were only 5 per cent pure.

The UN found dealers diluting their product with cutting agents such as dental and veterinary anaesthetics that mimic the effects of cocaine but are much cheaper.

The World Drug Report 2009 revealed that cocaine use increased dramatically in the UK from the mid-90s, but remained stable over the last two years.

Data given to the UN by the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) shows wholesale prices have risen to record levels.

The cost of a kilogram of cocaine has increased by 50 per cent from £30,000 to £45,000 since 2007.

There are estimated to be 860,000 cocaine users in England and Wales and around 140,000 in Northern Ireland and Scotland combined.

The report states: "The UK thus continues to be - in absolute numbers - Europe's largest cocaine market, with its second highest cocaine use prevalence rate."

The report revealed a concentration of "problem drug users" in the capital, with around a quarter of all problem users in the UK living in London - a total of 74,000 people.

That means around one person in 100 in the capital has a drug problem.

The report also details the supply routes that bring drugs to the UK.

Cocaine is shipped here via the Caribbean or - increasingly - the west coast of Africa.

Heroin comes from Afghanistan on land routes through the Middle East to Europe before it is re-packaged and smuggled in to Britain.

Politics / How We Rode From Holland To Nigeria — Dutch Bikers (nigeria Not A Bad Country) by bombay: 2:14am On Jun 20, 2009
Dennis and Feils, Dutchmen, left Neitherland on the 15th of March and arrived Nigeria about ten weeks after, traveling through 18 countries in Sub-saharan Africa.

Saturday Vanguard met them at Ibadan where they had a short stay before setting out again, they spoke on their experience and how they rode on motorcycle to Nigeria.

What are your preparations before the journey?
We really had to prepare ourselves for the journey. The bikes are bout 10 years old. We did a lot things by ourselves. We put a large tank that would cover much distance. We did so many things on the bikes like the break pads and some other things because these bikes are not common in many other countries we traveled to and so, we had to make some spare parts ourselves.
What prompted you to embark on this type of journey?
We bought two motorcycles in India ten years ago then we said to each other that there is need to seize one opportunity in a life time and we started. We discussed and we ended up wanting to go to Capetown in Africa. That was how the big story began from that moment on. When we started, we just really wanted to go for it.

We left the Netherlands on the 15th March, 2009 and slowly, we started to move Southwest and now we are in Nigeria already half-way. There was no time to plan. We just wanted to be in Nigeria.

Where did you take off?
We took off from Netherlands and then to Morocco to Senegal and from there to Burkina Faso, Mauritania to Ghana and to Benin and from there to Nigeria.

What are your challenges on the road?
Of course we had some challenges on the way but we tackled them. One day, we had seven flat tyres. So, we had to repair the tyres ourselves. We are mechanics and as such any mechanical problems would be solved by us.

Sometimes, you fall over and you have to pick up your bike. Those are the small challenges we had. Our people told us that it was a dangerous venture we wanted to embark upon.

At times we take off around 6am in the morning and when the sun goes down we stop. We didn’t really have any problem with the police. Sometimes, they stop us and delayed us for about one hour. And sometimes, they wanted to know where we were coming from and where we were going.

Actually, we encountered some problems but they are minor problems and we solved them. We are careful too and we don’t do crazy things. So far, we are safe and our loved ones should not bother themselves.

Did Police demand money from you?
We have traveled over 20,000 kilometres. At times, police would stop us on the way and would want to get money from us. But we were not able to meet their demand.

How did your families react when you set out for this journey?
They warned us that it is very dangerous to go to Nigeria. They said there are too many dangerous things on the road. They love us and they care about us. They were worried because of crime rate, mechanical failure, robbery but we decided to go even though our loved ones warned us.

So what is your feelings about Nigeria?
We believe Nigeria is not dangerous at all. It is not dangerous than any other place in the world. Nigerians are very open people and the country is very beautiful. We are having a very nice time here.

Nigeria is big country and in big countries, there are usually some problems. There is no problem here. People just cry and make the whole country unsafe. Nigeria is so big. It is bigger than our own country which is about 200 kilometers length and breadth. One day you can drive round.

How are feeding on the road?
We have our own food. We have done a lot of food camping in the desert. We can make our own food.

Politics / 6,000 Tonnes Of Poisonous Rice Head For Nigeria by bombay: 1:58am On Jun 20, 2009
All relevant security agencies in the country’s border routes and seaports have been placed on the red alert to watch out for a shipment of about 6,000 tonnes of poisonous rice believed to be on its way to Nigeria from Freetown, the Sierra Leonean capital.

The worrisome discovery was made recently through intelligence reports from the office of the nation’s National Security Adviser (NAS), indicating that the consignment of the contaminated product may arrive soon. It is not immediately clear if the importers are bringing in the products through the roads or sea.

Already, all officials of the Nigeria Customs Service, Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), the National Foods and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) as well as the Ports Health Control, have been directed to maintain extra vigilance at their duty posts to ensure that the unwholesome edible food items are promptly impounded on arrival.

The warning to the security agencies to that effect is contained in a circular from the office of the NAS, captioned, “Freetown: Plans Underway to Divert Contaminated Rice to Nigeria” with reference number NSA/C/352/S dated June 3, 2009 and signed by Akingbolasan, S.A.

The memo, which was also copied to the Controller-General of Customs, indicated that those behind the expected shipment were Nigerian businessmen, who had indicated interest to buy the products earlier rejected by the Sierra Leonean authorities on account of its being unsafe for human consumption.
Although details of the shipment remains sketchy as at press time, Daily Sun reliably gathered that the products were part of food aids to the war-torn country from Asia. The products were said to have encountered delay during transit as a result of sea storm, thereby becoming contaminated.

The Sierra Leonean authorities were said to have carried out tests on them, which proved that the rice was no longer fit for human consumption, before they were approached by the unscrupulous Nigerian businessmen who offered to buy them for shipment to their country.

“While the situation is being monitored, the Organization is being alerted of this development in order to safeguard Nigerian consumers,” the circular stated.

Checks conducted by Daily Sun at some of the customs formations in Lagos indicated that the officers had been put on round-the-clock watch for possible interception of the products on arrival.
Specifically, the Marine Units of the service are said to have been warned on the need to keep extra vigilance on the waterways following unconfirmed reports that the importers may have got wind of the red alert.

This is terrible all because of profit.
Some of you here will say it is the government's fault hummmmmmmmmmmm
Politics / Atta Mills Promises Level Playing Field For Nigerian Investors by bombay: 1:51am On Jun 20, 2009
Ghana Getting Scared grin
President of Ghana, John Evans Atta Mills yesterday assured President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua that his country would provide and maintain a level playing field for all Nigerian investors in Ghana.
Mills gave the assurance in response to President Yar’Adua’s opening remarks during bilateral talks between the two leaders at State House .
“I want to assure Nigerian investors that we will maintain a level playing field for them in Ghana, because they have contributed to the growth of our economy through the provision of jobs and opened up the country,”,he stated.
The Ghanaian President said Nigeria and Ghana had the same objectives, purposes and goals of developing the continent through the resources available to the two nations, especially considering the leadership roles which the two nations occupied in the continent.
He said President Yar’Adua’s role and support contributed immensely in cooling down tempers during the Ghanaian elections, adding that, “I will always remember that when we had challenges, you came to
our aid.”
Earlier, President Yar’Adua said Ghana and Nigeria had leadership responsibilities, which needed to be discharged for the overall benefit of their peoples and the African continent.
“We will do all possible to ensure that the excellent relations between us are enhanced, for the benefit of our people and the continent”, he stated, adding that, “our national positions in multilateral organisations to which we belong remain the same, reinforcing the long history of cooperation we have shared”.
President Atta Mills will remain in Nigeria till Monday, when he will attend the Summit of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government
Business / Nigeria–Russia Set To Sign Nuclear Deal by bombay: 1:47am On Jun 20, 2009
Nigeria and Russia are to sign a nuclear energy cooperation accord next Wednesday when President Dmitry Medvedev becomes the first Kremlin leader to visit Nigeria, officials said.
A joint venture between Russian oil and gas giant Gasprom and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) will also be signed during the one day visit, Nigerian presidential spokesman Olusegun Adeniyi said, hailing what he called a "historic" visit by Medvedev.
"It will be the first ever visit by the head of state of the Russian Federation to Nigeria," said Adeniyi.
Adeniyi said the nuclear agreement "is for cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy especially for the purpose of electricity."
Russia and Nigeria signed an agreement on March 18 this year to cooperate in building nuclear reactors in the West African country and jointly explore for uranium.
The protocol "foresees the possibility of bilateral cooperation for the development of Nigeria's nuclear infrastructure" and the "joint exploration and exploitation of uranium deposits," Russia's nuclear energy agency Rosatom said.
Nigeria believes there is "much to gain from closer ties with Russia given its oil and gas industry," the spokesman said.
Russia's envoy to Nigeria, Alexander Polyakov, said Medvedev was invited by President Umaru Yar'Adua following talks on the sidelines of the Group of Eight (G8) industrialised powers in Japan last year.
Polyakov said "international issues would be on the agenda but primarily, the visit would be about bilateral cooperation. We would like to give a very strong political impetus to our interraction in different fields.
"First of all in the area of economy and investment awe would aim to bring the Russian /Nigerian partnership to a completely new level. Maybe it can be in strategic partnership," he said.
Polyakov said Gasprom chief executive Alexei Miller was expected to accompany Medvedev on the one-day visit.
"Other potential areas of cooperation will also be discussed, including military and technical cooperation," said the diplomat, who added that there was already "huge" and growing cooperation between the two countries.
Polyakov quoted Nigerian statistics as saying that the volume of bilateral trade went past 1.5 billion dollars last year and was still rising this year despite the economic crisis.

Politics / Nigerian Militants Claim Bomb Attack On 'major' Oil Pipeline by bombay: 10:43pm On Jun 19, 2009
LAGOS, Nigeria (CNN) -- Nigeria's main militant group said Friday it destroyed another oil pipeline owned and operated by a foreign company in the Niger Delta region.

It is the third reported attack this week by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, or MEND, which demands a fairer distribution of the country's oil wealth.

"Heavily armed fighters" blew up a "major" crude oil pipeline run by the Italian gas company, Agip, in Bayelsa state early Friday, MEND spokesman Jomo Gbomo said in an e-mail.

There was no immediate word from Agip about the purported attack. Some companies in the region have shut down their operations in the Niger Delta in the wake of ongoing violence there.

The fighters reached the pipeline after overpowering a Nigerian military gunboat, Gbomo said.

"All the soldiers numbering seven (7) were dispossessed of their weapons," he said. "The gunboat was also stripped of its weapons before it was disabled by explosives. The soldiers pleaded for their lives to be spared and we did."

The militant group said it blew up Shell's major crude oil trunk line late Wednesday in Bayelsa state, as part of its campaign "to cripple the entire oil and gas export of the Federal Republic of Nigeria." MEND called on the company to "vacate the Niger Delta region to avoid collateral damage to their investment and death to staff."

Shell confirmed an attack on its pipeline in Bayelsa on Wednesday, saying it shut down some production "to avoid potential environmental impact," spokesman David Williams said.

"There's a joint investigation underway to determine the quantity of crude (oil) spilled," Williams told CNN from the company's headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands.

MEND also claimed to have attacked a Chevron oil station in the Niger Delta region Monday and threatened further attacks in other states in the Niger Delta region, as well as on offshore oil facilities.

At the time, a Chevron spokesman said it was investigating the reported attack on its Abiteye flow station. The U.S.-based company halted its onshore operations in the region last month.

MEND on Monday also warned the international football association FIFA that it should "rethink" allowing Nigeria to host the upcoming under-17 World Cup series later this year.

"The safety of international players and visitors can not be guaranteed due to the current unrest," MEND said in an e-mail.

Only two out of the nine stadiums in Nigeria are close to being ready for the tournament which is scheduled to take place between October 24 and November 15, according to FIFA. The association has given the country a grace period to start constructing the remaining venues, FIFA Vice President Jack Warner said.

Last month, the militant group declared an "all-out war" on the government after what it said was a deadly bombing raid on civilians.

It is not the first declaration of war by MEND, which demands that more of Nigeria's oil wealth be reinvested in the region instead of enriching those whom the militants consider corrupt politicians.

The militant group declared war against the government in September for what it said were unprovoked attacks. At that time, MEND destroyed several oil facilities, forcing Nigeria to cut its oil exports by as many as 1 million barrels of oil per day, or 40 percent.

The recent violence -- which has included attacks on pipelines and hostage-taking -- has limited shipment of crude oil supplies out of Nigeria, Africa's largest producer.
