Sports / Embarassment As Nigerian Athletes In Rio Got Their Olympic Kits Only On Day 13 by canadaik(m): 2:38am On Aug 20, 2016
Most of them had finished competing by the time the outfits arrived.
"We are disappointed and embarrassed. We've been wearing kits from the World Athletics Championships," one athlete, requesting anonymity, told the BBC.
Nigeria's men's football team has its own sponsored kit - but it has been hit by funding problems and players only arrived hours before their first match.
The team plays for bronze on Saturday against Honduras.
Africa's most populous country has so far won no medals at Rio, with only three more days of competition left to go.

An unnamed Athletics Federation of Nigeria official told Nigeria's Vanguard newspaper that he had never experienced anything like this in all his years in sport.
"Money meant for the Games was held tightly by [sport] ministry officials and they were just releasing money piecemeal," the official is quoted as saying.
The government had budgeted 600m naira ($1.7m; £1.3m) for the Olympics, the Vanguard reported in July.
But payment problems appear to have dogged Nigerian Olympians.
Japanese plastic surgeon, Katsuya Takasu, is donating $200,000 to the football team after hearing about its financial difficulties.
The players were held up in the US city of Atlanta because of problems paying for their flight and only landed in Brazil just hours before their opening 5-4 win over Japan.
Mr Takasu has also promised each player a $10,000 bonus if they win bronze.

Health / What Happens To Your Body When You Get Ebola by canadaik(m): 9:16pm On Jul 28, 2014
I just came across this article, i think everyone will find the information useful.

This morning you woke up feeling a little unwell. You have no appetite, your head is aching, your throat is sore and you think you might be slightly feverish. You don’t know it yet, but Ebola virus has started to attack your immune system, wiping out the T-lymphocyte cells that are crucial to its proper function.

These are the same cells that the AIDS virus (HIV-1) attacks, but Ebola virus kills them far more aggressively. Exactly when and where you caught Ebola virus is unclear, it can take anything between two and 21 days from initial infection to the first symptoms. What is more certain is that you are now infectious yourself. Your family, friends and anyone in close contact with you are all in mortal danger.

The next week or so will determine if you are one of the lucky minority who survive. In the 24 Ebola virus outbreaks prior to the present one, a cumulative total of 1,590 people, two-thirds of all cases, have died.

The current outbreak, which began in the village of Meliandou in eastern Guinea in early December 2013, and which has now spread across Guinea and into the neighbouring countries of Sierra Leone and Liberia, has killed 251 people as of June 5, nearly half of the identified cases.

The west African Ebola epidemic is now the largest outbreak seen since Ebola virus was discovered in 1976. The World Health Organisation issued its first communiqué on the situation on March 23, and since then has been producing regular reports.

Over the next few days your condition deteriorates. Your body aches all over, you have chronic abdominal pain, the fever intensifies and you start to vomit and develop diarrhoea. After anything between a couple of days and a week of misery, you will have reached the crisis point – now the symptoms will either gradually recede or you will progress to the horrors of “cytokine storm”, a convulsion of your ravaged immune system that will plunge you into the terminal phase of Ebola virus disease known as haemorrhagic fever.

Cytokine storm releases a torrent of inflammatory molecules into your circulatory system. Your own immune system, now completely out of control, attacks every organ in your body. Tiny blood vessels burst everywhere and you begin slowly to bleed to death. The whites of your eyes turn red, your vomit and diarrhoea are now charged with blood and large blood blisters develop under your skin. You are now at the peak of infectiousness as Ebola virus particles, ready to find their next victim, pour out of your body along with your blood.

Fortunately, however, it seems you have survived. Rehydration therapy kept you strong in the initial phase and pure luck saved you from haemorrhagic fever. Understanding why some Ebola virus patients avoid the terminal phase is an active area of research, and one possible answer is that those whose T-lymphocytes survive the initial attack of the virus possibly retain sufficiently intact immune systems. Even when you are merely in the first phase of feeling vaguely unwell, it may be possible to determine if you will live or die.

Even though you are feeling much improved, and perhaps even ready to return to work, you will remain infectious for a while. All your bodily fluids will still contain virus. In particular, the virus can be sexually transmitted, especially if you are a man, up to 40 days after recovery.

Epidemiological modelling studies have shown that Ebola virus is about as infectious as influenza or very slightly more so – each infected person will probably infect two to four others. That’s not tremendously infectious compared to some of the super-infectious viruses such as measles or polio, which have corresponding numbers of five to 18, but it is nevertheless enough to sustain a pandemic. The question of why we haven’t seen a worldwide pandemic of Ebola in pre-modern times therefore becomes rather perplexing.

Where did it come from?

A briefly popular theory of a few years ago, that the Black Death of the 14th century was caused by Ebola virus, and that the famous mediaeval descriptions of buboes were actually haemorrhagic fever blood blisters, has now been convincingly excluded by DNA analyses that have proved beyond doubt that the Black Death was, after all, bubonic plague as originally thought.

Ebola may well be a purely modern disease and, since Ebola virus made its first known appearance in 1976, a whole generation of African medical workers have been drilled to be alert to the symptoms of haemorrhagic fever. Consequently, the World Health Organisation and its partners have been able to suffocate outbreaks before they spread more generally. However, the latest outbreak is proving rather more recalcitrant than expected and the story is not yet over.

Nairaland / General / Re: On Nigeria Winning The Just Concluded AFCON by canadaik(m): 10:15pm On Feb 13, 2013
I'm sure every Nigerian around the globe has in the last couple of weeks had one of those moments when they were happy and proud that they were Nigerians! Thats a good thing, if only we could have more of those moments! The feats of the super eagles in South Africa has indeed brought lots of smile, shared optimism and believe in the country. congratulatory messages has rang in from all quarters and rewards has been awarded for their heroic feats.

However I have been left bemused by some of the rewards that has greeted the super eagles victory, and by that i meant all the monetary awards running into millions, lands given and the all the national titles and awards given to them. Get me right, I am not saying that they dont deserve them, I am just left with questions such as this- are there not better endevours to commit all these money and resources splashed too ? How does winning the AFCON affects the common Nigerian living under $1 a day ? Is football really supposed to be the benchmark of getting the highest title in the land ?

In civilized communities, contributing directly to the society has always been a benchmark for national titles. In such communities, when people win trophyies like this the only headache of players would be to what charity were they going to make all those donations to ? thats the way of giving back to the community.

I dont have any issue with the players, i however have issues with the government who i believe are psycophants. I believe there are people more deserving of winning national awards that they overlook. I think making football the standard of achievement is not the best role model for the younger generation. We should be seeing such awards going to people who have directly involved themselves in doing something to change their societies and people around them, not bunch of thieveing politicians or football playing players. Philantropist, scholars are people who are more deserving of this awards.

If we are to grow as a country, improving things such as education, health, empowerment of women and children, fighting corruption are the things that should be celebrated. Not just winning a football tournament.

I rest my case!

Celebrities / Nkiru Sylvanus Has Been Kidnapped! by canadaik(m): 7:46pm On Dec 17, 2012
Barely one week after the kidnap of Prof. Kanene Okonjo, mother of Nigeria’s Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, another kidnap case is being reported in Imo State. Kidnappers in Owerri, the State capital, have reportedly abducted Nkiru Sylvanus, an actress and a special assistant on public relations to the Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha.

Sources at the Imo state government house told SaharaReporters that Ms. Sylvanus was in the company of three others when she was snatched and driven away around 8:30 PM on Saturday. She was reportedly abducted close to the famous Concord Hotel, Owerri.

It was learnt that the abductors have established contact with her family and have demanded a ransom of N100 million for her release. However, other sources say the ransom was demanded from the state government.

The governor’s aide was reported to have been taping an episode of a public relation’s show, “Inside Imo” which was expected to air on national television, when she was taken away in Owerri.

The police and other security agencies in the state have begun a search for the lady.

We pray she is found and in good health and is reunited with her family soon.

Events / Why Is Cake Deemed Necessary In Nigerian Ceremonies by canadaik(m): 5:48pm On Oct 17, 2012
Hello,
This is just out of curiosity but i keep wondering why in Nigeria cake's always appear at almost every occassion....from weddings to birthday celebrations, is this something customary in Nigeria, i'm not very sure of this but i happen to live outside Nigeria, and i hardly see cakes in events except birthdays, for example considering the fact that i failed to see any cake in the recent publicized royal wedding of prince Williams and Kate Middleton i can make a safe assumption. Hence, are cakes important at events/ceremonies or are they Nigerian things? your kind response appreciated in advance cool
