The last couple of days have been pretty hectic - running up and down all day. My Emirates flight was scheduled for departure at 16th December, 5:50pm. Accra to Dubai to London (Gatwick) to Toronto. I was really impressed with the onboard service of the flight attendants.


Food was also good (though I couldn't eat most of them). Both of my layovers in both Dubai and London were very short (2hours each). I literally had to run at Dubai airport. What a feat of Engineering masterpiece that airport is.


Now to address people's concerns about transiting in London. If you have a Canadian visa, you can transit in London if you meet ALL the following criteria:


1. Your inbound and outbound flights are with the same airline. In other words, you do not have to claim you luggage at the airport before boarding the next plane


2. You will be entering and leaving London at the same airport. (Either Heathrow or Gatwick)


3. Your arrival time and departure time at the airport are on the same calendar date. i.e You will not stay at the airport overnight.


4. You will stay inside the airport throughout the transit period. (You can't go sightseeing outside)



After a long and stressful 28 hours journey, I finally landed in Toronto at 7pm local time. The sun was still shining. I filled my customs declaration and headed towards the long queue to get my study permit. I spent almost an hour in the queue. It finally reached my turn;


Officer: Good evening


Me: Good evening. (I handed my passport and customs declaration to him)


Officer: Which school are you attending?


Me: York University


Officer: What course?


Me: Masters in Civil Engineering


Officer: Can you tell me how much of your tuition you've paid so far?


Me: I'm being fully funded by the University


Officer: Oh! that's nice. (With smiles)


He typed for a while and was asking me how my flight went. I told him it was awesome, but also stressful. He went inside and came back with my study permit. He told me to study hard and make Ghana and also Canada proud. He did not ask for any other document. No letter of introduction, no admission letter, no proof of funding.


Went to claim my baggage. Couldn't find it on the baggage carousel. I went to the arrivals hall and saw them faithfully standing there, waiting for their master. I exited the airport and whispered to myself, "Welcome to Canada".



Canada is such a beautiful country. The tall structures in downtown Toronto exude an air of grandeur that makes you feel so tiny. It's almost intimidating at first. Canadians are really nice and helpful. They smile a lot. They apologize for the tiniest inconvenience they cause you.


NOTE: When coming to Canada, please make sure you get a travel adapter for your laptop and other gadgets. Their sockets are very different and chances are, your phone or laptop charger wont fit into them. To all who are yet to travel, safe journey. Kind regards to you VO

Which are the best countries for graduate employability? And how hard is it for someone who’s studied abroad in that country to take advantage of it? We investigate.

A recent report by higher education data experts QS found that the single biggest factor that students consider when choosing a university is their chance of landing a good job when they complete their course. With increasing numbers of students opting to study abroad, and many intending to work abroad in the same country when they graduate, a crucial consideration is the strength of the employment market for degree-holders.

In the 2015 Times Higher Education employability rankings, which measures graduate prospects for each major university around the world, the top 50 places were dominated by universities in just a handful of countries. The US and UK took most of the top spots, and the only other countries to have a significant presence in the table were France, Germany, Australia, China and Canada.

But universities that boast good links to industry and a strong reputation with local employers is only part of the equation for international students. There are many other considerations too, such as visa restrictions or finding accommodation. Even for students who study in their home country, finding a job after college is no small feat. There are important questions such as how the cost of living compares with the average salary in an industry to go along with consideration of the state of the graduate job market.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the top countries for graduate employability, with the key information you need if you’re thinking about staying on to work abroad there after your degree.

Study and work abroad in the UK
Visas
New rules mean that it’s getting tougher for international graduates hoping to work in the UK to stay on after university. You’ll normally need an employer to sponsor you and pay a salary of over £20,800 per year. You can find out more about this and other types of working visa in the UK here.

The job market
Graduate work prospects have started to improve recently across the UK and the overall employment rate for graduates after 6 months has now reached around 70%. But the country still has a very competitive job market, which is in part due to the amount of graduates who apply for a limited number of skilled jobs.

Cost of living
The UK can be a very expensive place to live, particularly in London, where rents are extremely high. Those on graduate salaries in the capital should anticipate living in a houseshare with other young professionals.

The student view
Andrew Orton, who studied History at the University of Durham, says even with a First-Class Honours degree, it wasn’t easy to find work. “My experience was that for the jobs I really wanted, I was struggling to get interviews. There was plenty of other work for graduates with a good degree, but it seemed to be in things like marketing or IT. It took me around seven months to find a job, though I probably could have got work much faster if I had been more flexible with my career path.”

Study and work abroad in the US
Visas
It can be difficult to stay on and work in the US after you study there. There is no working holiday visa programme (like the type UK citizens can use in Australia and New Zealand) and, crucially, you’ll need to have a job offer in place before even applying for a visa.

The job market
Unemployment rates in the US are currently low, and the graduate employment rate is the best it’s been in years. Average salaries are also up. But that isn’t to say good work is always easy to find; many grads still report spending months searching for their first position.

Cost of living
Costs in the US, particularly for accommodation, vary wildly, depending on where you go. You can easily pay over $3,000 per month for an apartment in New York City, whereas a similar apartment in Houston may cost a third of that, for example.

The student view
Fiona Pasha, a law graduate in Texas, says she found work quite easily, and is now able to work remotely while she travels the country. “I found a great job as soon as I passed the Bar, but I was lucky to have a specialised skill,” she says. “For graduates from more general subjects, I think it can be tougher to get well paid work.”

Study and work abroad in Germany
Visas
For EU nationals, Germany is a great choice as there are no restrictions and all EU citizens have the right to work there. For those outside of Europe, it can be much tougher, as you can usually only work in Germany if the position cannot be filled by a worker from the EU, or if you are highly skilled or highly qualified in a particular field.

The job market
Germany has a healthy job market for well-educated young people, although your prospects increase significantly if you can speak German fluently. Graduates who are seeking English-speaking jobs may find positions are in very high demand. Unemployment is generally low in Germany, but university leavers may have better luck in western Germany, as unemployment rates are higher in the east.

Cost of living
Germany can be surprisingly cheap to live in, though less so in Munich and the west of the country. Housing can be very reasonable, though, in trendy Berlin, rents are rising quickly. The student view
Helen Jones, 22, is a recent graduate from the Freie Universität Berlin. She says: “Berlin was a great place to study and I love it here. It’s so much cheaper than London (where I’m from) and the nightlife is amazing. My German is quite good but I’m not fluent yet, so many people here speak to me in English. I’m mostly looking for English-speaking positions in social media and marketing. I haven’t found a job yet, but have only been searching a few months and have already had a few interviews.”

Study and work abroad in France
Visas
Like in Germany, EU nationals are usually able to work in France without a visa. Those from outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland will need a company to sponsor their visa application. Applicants usually need to show they can make a ‘significant contribution’ to the French economy, based on their skills or education.


The job market
The graduate job market is saturated and can be tough to break into without fluency in French. However, Paris is becoming a major haven for start-up companies from around the world, which could offer the opportunity to get in on the ground floor and see your career blossom as the company grows.

Cost of living
Prices in France are roughly equatable to other countries in western Europe, such as Germany, Belgium or the UK. Costs are higher in large cities such as Paris, Lyon and Marseille.

The student view
Harry Cole, from Exeter, UK, studied French in Paris. He says: “Paris is the most amazing place to be a student. Fees are low, the unis are great and the culture and food is amazing. Sadly I had to return to the UK as the job prospects in my chosen field of media weren’t that great, even in Paris.”

Study and work abroad in Australia
Visas
International grads can work in Australia for a year as a working holiday (apply online at immi.gov.au), though there is usually a fee for the visa, and you’ll have to prove you have sufficient funds in your bank account to sustain yourself. Long-term job sponsorship is available where no-one Australian can be found to fill a position.

The job market
The youth unemployment rate is double the national average and competition for good jobs is intense. Recent figures found that just 68% of grads from the class of 2014 had full-time work within four months of graduating – the lowest since records began in 1982. However, some skills are in demand, and those studying medicine, nursing, veterinary science or mining engineering should easily find work.

Cost of living
In general, you might expect to pay more for most things than in the UK or the US, for example. A one-bed apartment in a major city could set you back over US$1500 per month. Wages are normally good though, especially for graduates.

The student view
Andrew Jackson, a journalism graduate of the University of Sydney who is originally from the US, says: “Since graduating I’ve been travelling around the country, working in bars, which pays surprisingly well. Soon I want to get going with my dream career, which is travel writing, but I’m not sure if I’ll carry on living here to pursue that, move home or maybe to somewhere like Burma or Thailand.”

Study and work abroad in China
Visas
Graduates will need an amusingly named ‘work permit for aliens’ to work in China, as well as an official invitation, and an employer who is accredited to employ foreigners. You’ll also need to pay application fees, which may total over US$150 dollars.


The job market
For English speakers, job opportunities will mostly be in cities such Beijing and Shanghai – the business and industrial hubs of the country. Many multi-national companies have their Asian headquarters in one of these east coast locations – as well as in Hong Kong and other locations such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Tianjin.

In Hong Kong, jobs are widely accessible to English speakers. The job market is competitive, with locals and international graduates all applying for positions. English speakers with some work experience stand a good chance of getting a job in media, accountancy or banking and finance.

Cost of living
Living in China is generally much cheaper than the West, though rent prices can be expensive in large cities and in particular, Hong Kong.

The student view
Daniel Cheung, a final-year student at Hong Kong Baptist University, says: “Hong Kong is like a gateway to many different parts of the world, and a melting pot of cultures. It’s a fascinating place to study and I’m hoping to stay here and work in finance when I graduate.”

Study and work abroad in Canada
Visas
Working visas are available to adults aged under 35, with the International Experience Canada programme. Apply online at cic.gc.ca/experience (there is usually a fee). You will also have to show you have more than C$2,500 in your bank account.

The job market
Unemployment in Canada currently stands at just under 7%. Bilingual people (with English and French) are always in demand. The economy in Canada currently has an uncertain outlook, and it is currently an employer’s market, with unemployment likely to rise over the next year or so.

Cost of living
In Canadian cities, the cost of living is quite reasonable compared to other western countries – the UK is around 25% more expensive, for example. The currency isn’t as strong as it once was, so some cities, such as Vancouver, may seem expensive compared to much of North America. Average salaries are reasonably high, so a good quality of life is achievable.


The student view
Scott Gough, from Manchester, UK, studied in Canada and now works at Ubisoft in Toronto. He says: “I couldn’t have been more pleased about my decision to study in Canada. I didn’t have getting a job in mind when I enrolled here, but actually I found work quite easily when I left university, and am enjoying having a job in an area I’m interested in.”

My grandpa had this opportunity.

The opportunity to secure dual citizenship and global assertiveness for his kids (my dad and his siblings) but he wasted it.

The man was a millionaire in the 1960s.

He was fugging rich. A big fabric merchant with a booming rubber sap business.

He traveled abroad at will.


He was so popular in my village. Go to Oghara and ask any elderly person of "Urie".

That was his nickname.

It means river.

The mfker was so full and flowing with wealth.


He was so rich the dude married six wives (that's the one that gave birth for him oh)... not to mention his concubines.


In total, he had about fifteen children but he never valued education… nor securing options for his kids.

None of his kids attained tertiary education.


You'll be stunned that, until I was twenty and graduated from UNIBEN, there was no university graduate from my entire lineage.


He died in 2015 of prostate cancer.

By that time, his wealth was only a memory. He had lost it all.


His children weren't well placed and none was willing to go overboard for his treatments.

His last days were full of pain.

Why?


He failed to secure OPTIONS for his kids.


Till today, his children are still angry with him for being so wasteful of opportunities and failing to secure OPTIONS for them.

MY UNBIASED REPLY:

I won't decide for you but only explained the details of the funding and how to explore it with the intent of getting your permanent residence status


If you decide to go for U of Calgary. You may get another funding for the 2nd year if you have excellent grade in your first year or at worst get to pay a very little amount of tuition fees. At the end of your program, you'll be eligible for 3 years Post-Graduate Work Permit which allows you to work for 3 years straight after studies in Canada.



If you decide to go for U of Saskatoon. At the end of your 1 year program, you will be eligible for 1 year Post-Graduate Work Permit, maybe by providence I have seen few cases of people who study for a year program and got 3 years PGWP but very rare as it is not the norm


How Does This Influence Your Permanent Residence Goal:


The easiest way for international student to become permanent resident is via Canadian experience Class. The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is an immigration program that allows individuals who have worked in Canada for at least one year to settle down permanently




Now, with your 1 year Post –Graduate Work Permit, it will be challenging to start work immediately your 1 year Post-Graduate Work Permit was issued i.e getting a job instantly and starting immediately. This means you won't be able to meet up with the 1 year Canadian work experience requirement to apply for permanent residence under Canadian experience class


With your 3 year Post-Graduate Work Permit, you'll have enough time in between applying for job, starting the job and doing the job for 1 year minimum even up to 2 years if you wish before applying for permanent residence status


You ask, if you decide to go for Uni of Saskatoon funding opportunity, how could you then get your Permanent residence status after study



MY FACTUAL RESPONSE:


1) You could decide to apply for another 1 year program/certification when done with your studies at Uni of Saskatoon so that you'll be eligible for 3 years PGWP



2) You could apply for permanent residence via the provincial nomination program in your province of study. There will always be a favorable way open up to international graduate by each Canadian province.

Do you know what you put in your letter of explanation (LOE) can make or mar your quest for a successful visa application to the UK, US, and most especially Canada.

LOE simply does the magic if well crafted.


I will let you in on a secret that will ensure a successful visa application.



The first thing you must remember is you need to convince the Embassy or Immigration officer is that you are able to fend for yourself financially. You can simply do this with your Proof of Fund.

The second thing is to convince them that you will return home. There are various ways to do this.

They all have to do with demonstrating your strong ties to your home country.

But there is one that almost always works. Well, I have not seen it fail once.

Let us use Canada as an example or scope of study.



Ideally, Canada immigration and citizenship (CIC) is looking for previous travel to countries requiring visas such as the US and UK. If you have never visited one of the aforementioned countries then, you are likely to be refused on the grounds of travel history.


You can either add attach a letter of explanation to your visa application to the CIC explaining your travel history or wait for a refusal (LoL) and then send in your letter of explanation.

So let us bring in a real life situation, for example the visa officer refuses your visa application on this ground as highlighted below;

"I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay, as stipulated in subsection 216(1) of the IRPR, based on the purpose of your visit.

• Your proposed studies are not reasonable in light of: your level of establishment, language abilities, financial ability and I am not satisfied you are a genuine student and that you will depart Canada at the end of your authorized stay.

Do not panic, this is what you should do!

Now if you have the means, talk to reliable and regsitered immigration lawyer or consultant, but if not, this DIY tactics will be of help to you.


You have to write a letter of explanation explaining in details your travel history, home ties, language abilities and of course what you intend doing in canada


Travel History: Trvaeling to Canada with no travel history could be very difficult, this is why you should build a good travel history as an adult. Try to visit countries that require visa before you are allowed entry.



But, if you have visited countries like UK and US but was refused on this ground; you should give detailed explanation of your entry into those countries on your letter of explanation. Ensure to include the dates and purpose of visits.


Insufficient Language Qualifications

This is a big problem to English speaking and non English speaking visa applicants who intend to study in Canada. You must have your IELTS, TOEFL score intact and included.

"To underline my English language qualification, I have attached my TOEFL scorecard with the application. I had appeared for a TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet based test) exam on 6th August 2016 and scored a total of 108 out of 120. Individual-section wise I have scored reading-28, listening-25, speaking-27 and writing-28.

My TOEFL scores have been accepted by the University as proof of my English language proficiency. The minimum required TOEFL score for my program is 100

With this I am sure the visa officer would be reasonable enough if you do not lie or withhold information as regards your true intentions to visit Canada.

Hey, you are right to an extent. Truth is, relocating to Canada is expensive but worth it.

The point I'm driving here is; There are other less competitive routes you could take when it comes to relocating to Canada. They are also relatively cheaper routes compared to the federal skilled work programme.

New Brunswick (NBPNP)
New Brunswick, like many other Canadian provinces has its own immigration streams, targeting individuals with certain eligibility criteria. Some of these streams are as follow:

New Brunswick Skilled Worker Stream is for skilled candidates holding a job offer from NB employer and willing to settle in province.
New Brunswick Express Entry Stream is for candidates living and working in NOC 0, A or B and willing a to settle in province.
New Brunswick Entrepreneurial Stream is for experiences business owners who want to start or buy a business in NB and managed it while staying in province.
The NB Express Entry Stream is new to the NBPNP where potential applicants are asked to complete an EOI (Expression Of Interest) and submit it to the NBPNP. Applicants also need to provide Federal Express Entry Profile Number and Job Seeker Validation Code on EOI form.

Express Entry
Express Entry is one of the most popular immigration streams amongst skilled migrants. It started off in 2015 and has been source of growing skilled immigrants for the Canadian Govt.

Canada’s Express Entry is a point based system where candidates are ranked on pre-decided set of parameters which ultimately converge to a final score. Candidates are then invited based on their score in Express Entry Pool.

Who Can Apply?



Anyone having a undergraduate (or Bachelor’s), graduate (or Master’s) or post graduate (or PhD) degree can apply. The higher the degree, more the points.
At least 2 years (within last 5 years) of Canadian or foreign experience in a skilled trade under key groups of NOC B (Federal Skilled Trades Program).
If you have 1 year (within last 3 years) Canadian Experience in NOC 0, A, B (Canadian Experience Class), then you get more points.
Candidates aged below 29 gets more points, 5 points are deducted per year of age after that.

Provincial Nomination Programs (PNP)
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) allow Canadian territories and provinces to nominate individuals who wish to immigrate to Canada. Those candidates are also interested in settling in a particular province. Every Provincial Nomination Program has at least one immigration category that is aligned with the Federal CIC Express Entry immigration process.

Every Canadian province, except Québec and Nunavut territory has its own unique PNP. By Canadian Law, Québec can select its own immigrants who want to settle in the province.
