There are wheat farms in kano and Nigerian wheat have existed since buhari's government. Nigerian wheat cannot be used for bread making as it does not meet the requirements. It can only be mixed with other wheats for making of pasta.

Politics / Gov Fubara Vows To Make Rivers Hub For Medical Tourism by ccwizard: 9:01pm On Apr 03
Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has vowed to make the state first choice medical tourism destination in Nigeria, and indeed, Africa.

The Governor explained that to achieve this, his Government was seriously paying greater attention to improving healthcare infrastructure and services available to the people, particularly at the primary level to bridge observed gaps between the primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare services in the State.

Governor Fubara emphasised that the ongoing reconstruction, rehabilitation and upgrade of all primary healthcare facilities across the State, with a view to integrating them with existing secondary and tertiary institutions, was intended to deliver immediate but quality healthcare services to majority of the people.

The Governor made this known while speaking to newsmen in Government House, Port Harcourt on the modest achievements of his administration in the health sector since assumption of office.

He stated that, besides the construction, renovation and upgrade of primary healthcare centres across the State, the capacity of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) has been improved with the training of personnel, and establishment of critical units, equipped with modern equipment to deliver sterling expertise services to patients.

Governor Fubara said: "We are proud of our modest achievements in the health sector, particularly in the construction of primary healthcare centres.

"We are also supporting the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital to perform optimally. Do not also forget the contributory healthcare insurance law that we have started implementing.

"I assure you that we will complete all the ongoing healthcare infrastructure projects that we have around the state."

Governor Fubara also identified some challenges that have frustrated smooth delivery of healthcare services in the State, and promised to tackle them.

"With all these on ground, it is evident that the primary challenges in our healthcare system are more with inadequate manpower, corruption, indiscipline and ineffective management.

"We will deal with all identified challenges and ensure that the healthcare system functions optimally to deliver affordable and efficient services to all citizens of the State," he said.

Also speaking, the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr Adaeze Oreh, said that under the leadership of Governor Fubara, the State has experienced formidable strides in building a rigorous and robust primary healthcare system.

Dr Oreh noted that the current emphasis was on renovating and upgrading already existing primary healthcare facilities in order to enhance their functionality so that Rivers people can have access to affordable and accessible primary healthcare services in the State.

She also said: "Another update to note is His Excellency's approval of the implementation of the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme which is the State's health insurance scheme.

"His Excellency has approved the implementation, making Rivers State the latest State to come on board on the implementation of Health Insurance Scheme across the country.

"The law was passed in 2021 but unfortunately, we did not have the implementation of this State's Health Insurance Scheme. But His Excellency has graciously approved and with the announcement of the appointment of an Acting Executive Secretary in the person of Dr Vetty Agala, the team has hit the ground running and the office is in place.

"The Federal Government has been notified. The National Health Insurance Authority and the Office of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare have all been notified so that all the processes needed for the enrolment of citizens and residents of Rivers State in the Health Insurance Scheme, especially our vulnerable populations, can immediately commence," she added.

Dr Oreh further highlighted the importance of the ongoing employment of various categories of health workers in the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital and the Rivers State Hospitals Management Board as approved by the Governor.

She said the application process was still open with the online application portal inundated with applications from across the State and the Diaspora.

"Citizens from Rivers State who are currently working in the Diaspora are keen to return to contribute their quota to the Rivers State Health Sector," she added.

Signed

Nelson Chukwudi

Chief Press Secretary to the Rivers State Governor

Politics / Current Electricity Tariff No Longer Realistic, Presidency N68 To N200 Pkw by ccwizard: 2:30am On Apr 03
The Federal Government has disclosed plans to remove electricity subsidy for 15 per cent of consumers.⁣

The move would reduce its N3.3tn cost and save the government about N1.1tn annually, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, told Reuters on Tuesday. ⁣

Onanuga said the Bola Tinubu-led administration was poised to allow the price hike in electricity given its N450bn budget for energy subsidies in 2024. ⁣

Consequently, power distribution companies will be allowed to increase prices from N68 to N200 per kilowatt-hour for urban consumers in April, the presidential aide explained in another interview with Bloomberg.

He explained that the country last reviewed electricity tariffs in 2020, and the planned increase would enable Discos to recover costs and improve investments.⁣

“With the huge subsidy burden and high cost of gas…the current electricity tariff is not realistic,” he told Reuters.

Confirming this to our correspondent, Onanuga said the tariff hike would affect only 15 per cent of consumers, accounting for 40% of electricity consumption. ⁣

He said the FG would help power generating companies to offset about N1.5tn debts they owe the country’s bulk electricity buyer.⁣

An electricity report released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Monday showed that electricity distribution companies in Nigeria saw their revenues surge to N1.1tn in 2023.⁣ This is despite the persistent epileptic power supply nationwide.⁣

The figure represents an increase of N234.4bn or 28.2 per cent from the N831bn generated by the power firms over a similar period in 2022.⁣

Nigeria’s national power grid collapsed 46 times from 2017 to 2023, a report by the International Energy Agency revealed.⁣

The IEA said Nigerians endured more nationwide blackouts in 2023, especially on September 14 when the grid collapsed due to a fire on a major transmission line.⁣

An analysis of the revenue data showed that the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company got the highest revenue of N218.6bn, up by 31.7 per cent or N52.7bn from N165.9bn recorded in 2022.⁣
It was followed closely by the Eko Distribution Company, which got a revenue increase of N52.8bn or 42.3 per cent from N124.8bn in 2022.⁣

Third on the list is the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, with a revenue generation of N167.4bn from N125.7bn recorded in 2022.⁣

Similarly, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company got a revenue of N111.3bn, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company got a revenue of N82.5bn, Yola Electricity Distribution Company (N22.3bn), and Benin Electricity Distribution Company (N84.6bn), and Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (N32.4bn).⁣

Also, Jos Electricity Distribution Company increased its revenue to N38.9bn, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (N55.2bn), and Port-Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (N74.7bn).⁣

Findings also showed that the increased efficiency in revenue collection might not be unconnected to rise in the overbilling of customers, especially those on the estimated billing system.⁣

Also, The PUNCH had observed that Discos were able to capture more customers under the estimated billings system.⁣

Further analysis revealed that the number of metered numbers increased by 9.38 per cent or 480,833 while the number of customers under estimated billings reduced slightly by 1.73 per cent to 5.8m.

Politics / Police Arrest Electoral Fraud Evidence In Rivers, Free Lawyers by ccwizard: 4:30pm On Apr 02, 2023
In what appeared to be a plot to frustrate the filing of election petitions against the alleged fraud in the just-concluded elections in Rivers State, the police authorities in the state yesterday arrested lawyers preparing election petitions for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. The police officers also seized all their documents containing the evidence of the alleged fraud in the elections in an apparent bid to stop the lawyers from appearing before the election petition tribunal on Monday.

The arrested lawyers include Aondo Jerry, Dr. Nelson U. Sobere, and Odum C. Eyiba. However, hours later, the Rivers State chapter of the APC said the lawyers have been released following the public outrage that trailed the action of the police. The spokesperson of the APC in Rivers State, Darlington Nwauju, confirmed that “the lawyers were granted bail on self-recognition while members of the support staff were granted conditional bail.”The arrested persons were three lawyers and five support staff. He, however, alleged that the election documents and the laptops with which the lawyers were working were still being detained at press time. The APC governorship candidate in the state, Mr. Tonye Cole, has sent a Save Our Soul (SOS) message to President Muhammadu Buhari regarding the arrest of evidence of electoral fraud in the state.

In the message, Cole said: “Today in the morning hours the police in Rivers State arrested three lawyers that are standing for APC in Rivers State with regards to the just-concluded governorship election.“Just this night after much effort by the leaders of the party, the police released the three lawyers but are still withholding all the electoral documents collected from the lawyers.”As at press time, Cole was still at the State CID headquarters. He vowed not to leave the facility until the documents are released. While the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has vowed to take legal action against the police officers who arrested the lawyers, a human rights activist, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) has also condemned the action of the police officers, whose motive was to prevent the lawyers from appearing before the election tribunal on Monday.

Also, a civil advocacy group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Buhari to direct the police to release the lawyers. The ordeal of the lawyers started in the early morning of yesterday when the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force unlawfully and illegally arrested the lawyers and the support staff of Tuduru Ede (SAN) &Co, who were preparing Election Petitions for APC candidates who INEC claimed lost the elections of March 18, 2023, to the Rivers State House of Assembly.According to a source who gave the account of the incident on condition of anonymity, the arrests were made in a hotel along Tombia Road, GRA Phase 2, Port Harcourt.

“The lawyers owing to tight timelines to file petitions quartered in the hotel to meet filing periods of 21 days.“They only had Forms EC8As and related forms issued by INEC and committed no offences for accepting and working their briefs.“Their clients who are APC and APC candidates have the right of access to the tribunal which the Police in collaboration with PDP are aggressively trying to obstruct by arresting and humiliating the lawyers.“The arrested lawyers include Aondo Jerry, Dr Nelson U. Sobere, and Odum C. Eyiba.”“They are currently held at a Police Station in Port Harcourt without access to them even upon several efforts of their principal Tuduru Ede (SAN) and other APC chieftains,” the senior lawyer explained.Items seized from the lawyers include laptops and exhibits required for their petition defence, such as the agent’s copy of Form EC8 and CTC of INEC documents.

NBA, Falana, SERAP Express Outrage

Reacting to the incident, the NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), in a statement issued yesterday vowed that the body would move against the police officers that were behind the arrest of the lawyers.Maikyau stated that it was unfortunate and disturbing for police officers to be used as tools for contravening the rule of law.He said though the police authorities had assured him of their release, NBA would ensure that those involved in the lawyers’ arrest would face the law.The statement read in part: “The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) strongly condemns such unwarranted harassment of lawyers in the lawful performance of their professional duties to their clients.

“Situations, where the instrumentality of the police is apparently being used to harass and intimidate lawyers, is a direct affront to the rule of law and a threat to our democracy; it is an invitation to anarchy and chaos, as people would rather resort to self-help than approach the civil and constitutional means provided for the resolution of disputes.“I reached out to the Inspector General of Police (IG) and the Commissioner of Police (CP) Rivers State, and I have been assured of the release of our colleagues. “We shall also take up the matter to ensure that any person(s) including police officers, who may be found complicit in the events leading to the arrest of our colleagues, is sanctioned for any possible abuse of office.

“I will continue to talk with Mr. Tuduru (SAN) and shall keep you posted on further developments in this matter.”Also reacting, Falana called on the Inspector General of Police (IG), Usman Baba, to order the release of the three lawyers detained in Rivers State.Falana argued that their arrest and detention had no justification in law.“I have just confirmed that the police will drag the detained lawyers to a magistrate court on Monday, April 3, and charge them with the forgery of electoral materials,” he said.

“The primary purpose of the latest display of naked power is to frustrate the opposition from filing an election petition against the rigging and violence that marred the March 18 governorship election in Rivers State.“Since there is no legal justification for the arrest and detention of the lawyers, we are compelled to call on the inspector-general of police to order their immediate release.

“The Rivers State Commissioner of Police should publicly apologise to the lawyers. Those who claim to have won the governorship election in Rivers must be prepared to defend their mandate without any intimidation or harassment of lawyers and witnesses,” Falana explained. On its part, SERAP urged President Buhari to direct the police to release the detained lawyers.SERAP also condemned the arrest of the lawyers, describing it as “impunity”“President Buhari must instruct the police to immediately release three lawyers who are reportedly arrested while filing processes to challenge the just concluded governorship election in Rivers State. This impunity must STOP,” SERAP tweeted.

All of you making comments didn't even bother to read the write up. Typical Nigerian youths always jumping to conclusions by reading only the headline. Read below.

The unpaid 77 months salaries of 18 non-indigenous workers of the defunct Nigeria Sunrise newspaper which has accumulated to over N73 billion.

The court which is located in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, was said to have been assigned with the responsibility of presiding over the case.

The said defunct newspapers which was established by the late governor of the state, Danbaba D. Suntai, in 2010, went out of existence shortly after the 2012 plane crash that rendered him incapacitated before he was eventually called to glory.

Narrating the ordeals they have been going through since the refusal of the state government to absorb them into the state civil service like their counterparts who have been absorbed due to their indigene status, the aggrieved workers believe that dragging the governor to court is the surest way out of their present predicaments.

One man cannot decide for the party as a whole.
He should use dialogue instead of threats.
His threats will only expand d distrust among some of the aspirants and their supporters.
To succeed in 2019, PDP needs a United house and this can only start from this little foxes kicking in at this time.

Wike might have sponsored the party but not with his pocket money as we know it, that's what Amaechi did in 2015 but what he should focus on at this moment is diplomacy.

BTW, Rivers State has really suffered Sha. 2015 it was Amaechi spending money to help APC and now it is Wike doing same thing he accused Amaechi of doing.

How these politicians have supporters will all their hypocrisy is really a mystery.

Wike didnt not choose the venue for the party. The NWC and BOT nominated three pdp states namely rivers, bayelsa and akwa ibom. Apart from rivers state none of this states have the capacity to host the pdp convention and that was why rivers state was choosen. Why will one aspirant insist that the venue be changed. PDP holds power only in the south and the convention cannot be held outside the south period.

This is why restructuring is needed. The federal govt is responsible for security in Rivers state. Wike has no power to control the various security agencies in the state. The commissioner of police answers to the federal govt and takes instructions from them. So the federal govt should be held responsible for insecurity in Rivers State.
