Sports / Anthony Joshua Suspended From Boxing by Celestialsword: 4:19pm On Oct 01
Former two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has been handed a 28-day suspension from boxing by the British Boxing Board of Control following his knockout loss to Daniel Dubois last Saturday at Wembley Stadium.

Joshua was floored four times and ultimately knocked out in the fifth round by Dubois’ devastating right hand.

The suspension, a standard medical precaution after a KO or TKO loss, prevents Joshua from entering the boxing ring during this period. However, with no confirmed upcoming fights, this enforced break is unlikely to affect the former two-time heavyweight world champion’s immediate plans.

Joshua’s loss to Dubois marks his fourth professional career loss, following setbacks against Andy Ruiz Jr. and Oleksandr Usyk. Despite speculation about his future, Joshua has dismissed retirement talks, expressing his determination to come back stronger. He has hinted at possibly invoking a rematch clause to face Dubois again.

In a social media message, Joshua reflected on his career, saying, “We’ve got to look at the positives… It’s far from over yet,” while vowing to make the right steps forward to return to the top. Promoter Eddie Hearn has also suggested potential future bouts, including a long-awaited clash with Tyson Fury.

Dubois’ promoter, Frank Warren, mentioned that Dubois could fight again in February, leaving the door open for a rematch if Joshua chooses to pursue it. Meanwhile, Joshua could also wait for the outcome of the Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk bout scheduled for December.

Car Talk / Toyota And Lexus Recalled Over 100,000 Cars For Engine Failure by Celestialsword: 9:13am On Oct 01
Toyota is facing one of its most expensive and complex recalls after discovering a defect in the V-6 twin-turbocharged engines powering both the Tundra pickup trucks and the luxury Lexus LX SUVs. This issue affects vehicles from the 2022 and 2023 model years, specifically those produced between November 2021 and February 2023, and for the Lexus LX, from July 2021 to November 2022.

What’s wrong with these engines?
The defect that triggered this large-scale recall can cause the engine to stall suddenly while driving, significantly increasing the risk of a crash. The root of the problem stems from machining debris left inside the engine during production, which can lead to engine knocking, rough operation, difficulty starting, and, in the worst cases, total loss of power.

In May 2024, Toyota notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of this issue. At the time, the company estimated that only 1% of the 102,092 potentially affected vehicles might exhibit the defect. However, this figure was largely due to limitations in NHTSA’s reporting system, where Toyota explained that it was unable to provide an accurate estimate of the number of vehicles affected.

Drastic solution: complete engine replacement
Two months after the initial filing, Toyota still had not determined exactly how many vehicles were affected, leading to a radical decision: replace the engines in every potentially impacted vehicle. This means swapping out the engines in over 100,000 vehicles, including approximately 98,600 Tundras and 3,500 Lexus LX SUVs.

So far, this solution only applies to non-hybrid versions of the 3.4-liter V-6 twin-turbocharged engines (designated V35A). The hybrid Tundra models are not included in this recall because, in the event of an engine failure, their electric motors can still provide power to the vehicle.

How the issue was discovered
The investigation began in March 2022, when a customer reported a sudden engine stall. Toyota found that the main engine bearings had seized. More reports followed, and as Toyota continued its investigation, it became clear that machining debris was responsible for the engine failures.

By 2023, Toyota had accumulated 166 technical reports, and 824 warranty claims related to this problem. This led the company to issue a voluntary recall of the affected vehicles. Even engines that initially appeared to be in good condition were found to have issues after thorough inspection.

Financial impact of the recall
Replacing over 100,000 engines will come at a significant cost to Toyota. Beyond the price of the new engines themselves, the company will also need to cover labour costs for removing the faulty engines and installing the replacements. There’s a concern that this massive recall could affect the production of new vehicles, as manufacturing capacity may need to be redirected to produce replacement engines for the recall.

Despite the high cost, Toyota has been praised for taking such a comprehensive approach to safety, even though it’s uncertain how many vehicles are actually at risk. The company plans to send notices to vehicle owners before the end of the month, informing them about the recall and the next steps.

Toyota’s commitment to long-term customer trust
This recall highlights Toyota’s dedication to maintaining long-term customer trust by addressing issues head-on, no matter the scale or cost involved. Although only a fraction of the affected vehicles may experience engine failure, Toyota’s decision to replace over 100,000 engines is a testament to its proactive approach to safety and reliability. By opting for a complete engine replacement rather than a smaller-scale fix, Toyota is reinforcing its brand reputation as one that prioritizes customer well-being over short-term financial concerns. In a competitive market where reliability is a key selling point, this recall serves as a clear message: Toyota is willing to go the extra mile to ensure the performance and safety of its vehicles remain uncompromised.

Toyota has taken a bold and proactive stance by addressing this engine defect in their V-6 twin-turbocharged vehicles. Replacing all potentially affected engines, while costly, ensures that customer safety is the top priority. By doing so, the company demonstrates a strong commitment to resolving quality issues, even if the financial consequences are significant.

Foreign Affairs / Lebanon's Nasarallah: Who Isael Says It Has Killed-led Hezbollah by Celestialsword: 10:56am On Sep 28
Lebanon’s Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who Israel said on Saturday it has killed, led Hezbollah through decades of conflict with Israel, overseeing its transformation into a military force with regional sway and becoming one of the most prominent Arab figures in generations – with Iranian backing.

The Iran-backed Hezbollah has yet to issue any statement on the status of Nasrallah, who led the group for 32 years.

The Israeli military said it had killed Nasrallah in an airstrike on the group’s central headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut a day earlier.

The Israeli military “eliminated … Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Hezbollah terrorist organization,” Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee wrote in a statement on X.

Among supporters, Nasrallah was lauded for standing up to Israel and defying the United States. To enemies, he was head of a terrorist organisation and a proxy for Iran’s Shi’ite Islamist theocracy in its tussle for influence in the Middle East.

His regional influence was on display over nearly a year of conflict ignited by the Gaza war, as Hezbollah entered the fray by firing on Israel from southern Lebanon in support of its Palestinian ally Hamas, and Yemeni and Iraqi groups followed suit, operating under the umbrella of “The Axis of Resistance”.

“We are facing a great battle,” Nasrallah said in an Aug. 1 speech at the funeral of Hezbollah’s top military commander, Fuad Shukr, who was killed in an Israeli strike on the Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut.

Yet when thousands of Hezbollah members were injured and dozens killed, when their communications devices exploded in an apparent Israeli attack last week, that battle began to turn against his group.

Responding to the attacks on Hezbollah’s communications network in a Sept. 19 speech, Nasrallah vowed to punish Israel.
“This is a reckoning that will come, its nature, its size, how and where? This is certainly what we will keep to ourselves and in the narrowest circle even within ourselves,” he said.

He had not given a broadcast address since then.
Israel has meanwhile dramatically escalated its attacks, killing several senior Hezbollah commanders in targeted strikes and unleashing a massive bombardment in Hezbollah-controlled areas of Lebanon, which has killed hundreds of people.
Recognised even by his enemies as a skilled orator, Nasrallah’s speeches were followed by friend and foe alike.

Wearing the black turban of a sayyed, or a descendent of the Prophet Mohammad, Nasrallah used his addresses to rally Hezbollah’s base but also to deliver carefully calibrated threats, often wagging his finger as he does so.

He became secretary general of Hezbollah in 1992 aged just 35, the public face of a once shadowy group founded by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in 1982 to fight Israeli occupation forces.

Israel killed his predecessor, Sayyed Abbas al-Musawi, in a helicopter attack. Nasrallah led Hezbollah when its guerrillas finally drove Israeli forces from southern Lebanon in 2000, ending an 18-year occupation.

‘DIVINE VICTORY’

Conflict with Israel largely defined his leadership. He declared “Divine Victory” in 2006 after Hezbollah waged 34 days of war with Israel, winning the respect of many ordinary Arabs who had grown up watching Israel defeat their armies.
But he became an increasingly divisive figure in Lebanon and the wider Arab world as Hezbollah’s area of operations widened to Syria and beyond, reflecting an intensifying conflict between Shi’ite Iran and U.S.-allied Sunni Arab monarchies in the Gulf.

While Nasrallah painted Hezbollah’s engagement in Syria – where it fought in support of President Bashar al-Assad during the civil war – as a campaign against jihadists, critics accused the group of becoming part of a regional sectarian conflict.

At home, Nasrallah’s critics said Hezbollah’s regional adventurism imposed an unbearable price on Lebanon, leading once friendly Gulf Arabs to shun the country – a factor that contributed to its 2019 financial collapse.

In the years following the 2006 war, Nasrallah walked a tightrope over a new conflict with Israel, hoarding Iranian rockets in a carefully measured contest of threat and counter threat.

The Gaza war, ignited by the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, prompted Hezbollah’s worst conflict with Israel since 2006, costing the group hundreds of its fighters including top commanders.
After years of entanglements elsewhere, the conflict put renewed focus on Hezbollah’s historic struggle with Israel.

“We are here paying the price for our front of support for Gaza, and for the Palestinian people, and our adoption of the Palestinian cause,” Nasrallah said in the Aug. 1 speech.

Nasrallah grew up in Beirut’s impoverished Karantina district. His family hail from Bazouriyeh, a village in the Lebanon’s predominantly Shi’ite south which today forms Hezbollah’s political heartland.

He was part of a generation of young Lebanese Shi’ites whose political outlook was shaped by Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Before leading the group, he used to spend nights with frontline guerrillas fighting Israel’s occupying army. His teenage son, Hadi, died in battle in 1997, a loss that gave him legitimacy among his core Shi’ite constituency in Lebanon.

POWERFUL ENEMIES

He had a track record of threatening powerful enemies.
As regional tensions escalated after the eruption of the Gaza war, Nasrallah issued a thinly veiled warning to U.S. warships in the Mediterranean, telling them: “We have prepared for the fleets with which you threaten us.”

In 2020, Nasrallah vowed that U.S. soldiers would leave the region in coffins after Iranian general Qassem Soleimani was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Iraq.

He expressed fierce opposition to Saudi Arabia over its armed intervention in Yemen, where, with U.S. and other allied support, Riyadh sought to roll back the Iran-aligned Houthis.

As regional tensions rose in 2019 following an attack on Saudi oil facilities, he said Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates should halt the Yemen war to protect themselves.
“Don’t bet on a war against Iran because they will destroy you,” he said in a message directed at Riyadh.

On Nasrallah’s watch, Hezbollah has also clashed with adversaries at home in Lebanon.
In 2008, he accused the Lebanese government – backed at the time by the West and Saudi Arabia – of declaring war by moving to ban his group’s internal communication network. Nasrallah vowed to “cut off the hand” that tried to dismantle it.

It prompted four days of civil war pitting Hezbollah against Sunni and Druze fighters, and the Shi’ite group to take over half the capital Beirut.

Celebrities / Verydarkman: A Pain To Many by Celestialsword: 9:56am On Sep 28
His name didn’t ring a bell with some social media users before now. But suddenly, Martins Vincent Otse popularly known as VeryDarkMan ,VDM, has become a formidable force in the Nigerian digital space.

In fact, the fear of VDM is the beginning of wisdom, as many of his victims, whom he has dragged on social media platforms for one reason or the other, will live to tell their stories in a hard way.

For some, VDM is a refreshing and fearless crusader, while others see the Edo state born social media activist as an enemy of society, who’s propagating hate, provocation and intolerance. But like him or hate him, VDM remains the new conscience of the society, whose mission is to fight against injustice no matter whose ox is gored as well as helping others. Since his emergence on the digital space a few months back, VDM has fought many fearless battles, stepped on many toes and ended up cooling his feet in the police custody.

His boldness has earned him a large following on social media, having been using his platform to speak out against social injustices and hypocrisy. Though his modus operandi may have been called into question, with many accusing him of normalizing hate and toxicity. But VDM is highly unrepentant of his provocative videos, statements and commentaries on social media.

One of his most recent and widely publicized confrontations was his battle with Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin, founder and head prophet of MercyLand Deliverance Ministry, Warri, Delta State. His feud with the Prophet stemmed from the commercialization of religious items, with VDM accusing Jeremiah of exploiting his followers by selling items such as miracle water and soap which he claimed could perform miracles.

The clash quickly escalated, drawing supporters and detractors from both sides, to a point that the prophet threatened a N1bn lawsuit against the popular social critic, which he later dropped, after VDM stormed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) office, where he filed a complaint against Prophet Jeremiah’s products. Eventually, the clergyman was forced to reverse his decision to sell his popular miracle water and soap to his church members again.

VDM’s latest battle, which is currently making headlines has do with the viral audio he released on Instagram days back, where the controversial cross-dresser Bobrisky was said to have bribed some unnamed EFCC operatives with N15 million to drop money laundering charges against him, prior to his being sent to prison for abuse of the naira.

The allegation has since gone viral, drawing the attention of both the government and the different professional bodies and agencies, including the EFCC, who has constituted a team of investigators to look into the allegations.

This is even as popular rapper, Folarin Falana, aka Falz and his human rights lawyer-father, Femi Falana, who are also joined in the saga have threatened legal action against the fearless VDM. Both father and the son are demanding a retraction within 24 hours of VeryDarkMan’s remarks insinuating that Falz and his father were going to procure presidential pardon for convicted Bobrisky. However, responding to the threat, VDM denied defaming Femi Falana, saying “Uncle Femi Falana is someone that I respect 100 per cent, not because of his position as a SAN but because of what he has used the position to do, representing people like me that speak against ills in the society”. On Falz, VDM said, ”I expected you to address your letter to Bobrisky that called your name in that recording and not to me. I did not defame you”

Not long ago, VDM also called out the likes of Iyabo Ojo, Tonto Dikeh, Ashumsy among others that sparked uncontrollable reactions on social media. In the case of Ashumsy, a social media influencer who received N1 million from a small businessman for advertising services but failed to deliver, VDM called her out on social media, which forced her to return the money unconditionally, while crying and begging the social crusader to let her be. Indeed, many are wondering about the role VDM has assigned to himself as another Shakespare’s ‘Daniel’ in Merchant of Venice that has come to judgment.

Politics / Why Bobrisky Was Kept Outside Prison Walls by Celestialsword: 6:39am On Sep 28
Inmates’ rights activist and Director General of the Prison Rehabilitation Mission, Bishop Kayode Williams has advanced the possible reason convicted dresser, Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky, might have been kept outside the walls of the designated Custodial Centre where he was to have served out his term even as Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has vowed to punish any official found wanting in the matter.

face of allegations that convicted cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky, was sentenced to six months in prison but was allegedly given an apartment outside the custodial facility.

Already, the Federal Government has suspended two top officers of the Correctional Service; Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC), in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kirikiri, Lagos State, and Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC), in charge of the maximum Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kirikiri, Lagos State.

Williams who spoke on a breakfast show on Arise Television monitored Friday in Abuja, said the fact that Bobrisky is a man but with the appearance of a woman, required a special arrangement for his accommodation. His position was corroborated by a former National Public Relations Officer of the Service, Controller Francis Enobore (retd).

Addressing the issue, Williams said; “There are accommodations for condemned prisoners, those sentenced to death, who must not mingle with other inmates. The second accommodation is for convicted inmates, who are the owners of the prison. The accommodation that is provided for males, are they going to bring Idris with his transgender body /looks to go and sleep in the general cell? The first thing they do is decide how to treat someone like that.

“They provided him a special place for protective custody because, with his appearance, he would be in danger. He looks like a woman, moves like a woman, and some homosexual inmates would be willing to take things to extreme lengths.”

On his part, Enobore said; “Yes, he confessed in court that he is a man but he came in bodily showing that he is a woman. Some of the people behind bars are unrepentant homosexuals. There is no doubt that if care was not taken, we would have a very serious security situation on our hands”.

Meanwhile, speaking at a media parley Friday in Abuja, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Ojo
said the senior officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service NCoS who were already suspended was to ensure unhindered investigation into the matter.

He said; “We will not spare anybody no matter how highly placed. Let’s be patient. Investigation is on but let’s be assured that nobody will be shielded and nobody will be protected,” the minister stressed”.

Tunji-Ojo expressed confidence in the ability of the investigative panel headed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani, to discharge its mandate creditably.

Politics / Lagos, Ogun Warns Residents As Oyam Dam Plans Water Release by Celestialsword: 6:00am On Sep 28
The Lagos and Ogun state governments have issued warnings to residents living in flood-prone areas, particularly along riverbanks, to temporarily relocate or brace for potential flooding ahead of the planned release of water from the Oyan dam.

The release of excess water from the dam, managed by the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority, OORBDA is part of an annual process to manage dam levels during the rainy season.

Recall that residents of Isheri Riverview estate and other residential surroundings in Warewa and OPIC in Obafemi Owode Local government area were last year sacked by flooding following a water surge induced by the release of excess water from the dam.

To avoid a repeat of this, both the Lagos and Ogun state governments have advised communities in low-lying areas to take necessary precautions, including relocating to safer ground, as the release could cause rivers to overflow, leading to severe flooding.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab told Saturday PUNCH that, the Federal had commenced the dredging of rivers along the corridor of the dam to avoid devastating flooding incidents such as the one that occurred in Maiduguri.

“We have done the advocacy, we have told people to leave the low line areas. We are collaborating with the Ogun state government on how we can mitigate the impact of the release.

“Those staying on the low line areas have to leave, particularly those at Ajilete and other areas around Owode-Onirin because we saw what happened in Maiduguri, it will be child’s play.

“We will keep appealing to them to leave the low line areas, but if they refuse to leave, they have to bear the consequences”, Wahab said.

His Ogun State counterpart, Ola Oresanya said the dam was planning to increase the volume of water from over one million gallons to create more space in the reservoir.

But the management of OORBDA has allayed the fear of residents, assuring that the release of water from the dam will not lead to flooding incidents.

The Head of the Public Relations department of OORBDA, Saliu Adeniyi who spoke to Saturday PUNCH ruled out the possibility of dam failure, saying the dam has been undergoing periodic maintenance.

“Definitely we will not have the Maiduguri issue happening here in Oyan dam because we have our project manager and other staff monitoring the status of the dam every day and due maintenance is being done at the dam, so such a thing will never occur here.

“If the rain increases we will also increase the volume of water being released, but it is not going to be that voluminous to create flood in downstream”, Adeniyi said.

Politics / Lessons To Learn From Edo Election by Celestialsword: 4:09am On Sep 25
"Lessons to Learn from Edo Election"

The recent Edo election highlights several key lessons for political actors and the electorate alike, drawing from past relationships, political allegiances, and regional dynamics. Let’s explore these lessons with a deeper understanding of the political interplay that unfolded.

1. The Genesis: Obaseki and Oshiomhole’s Early Bond Godwin Obaseki, as a private citizen, played a pivotal role in introducing Adams Oshiomhole into Edo politics, backing him to contest the 2007 gubernatorial election. Oshiomhole’s tenure as governor was marked by notable achievements, earning him popularity and cementing his place in Edo’s political history.

2. Oshiomhole Rewards Obaseki, Then the Rift In a classic example of political gratitude, Oshiomhole chose Obaseki as his successor, a move that initially seemed to secure continuity. However, this political alliance eventually turned sour, leading to their infamous fallout. Oshiomhole's elevation to national prominence within the All Progressives Congress (APC) saw him receive support from Bola Tinubu to become the party's national chairman. Despite their earlier camaraderie, both Oshiomhole and Obaseki share one trait—an apparent inability to forgive easily.

3. Obaseki’s Quest for Reelection Blocked When Obaseki sought re-election under APC, Oshiomhole, then wielding considerable influence as party chairman, used his position to block Obaseki’s nomination. Despite numerous appeals and overtures from Obaseki, Oshiomhole stood his ground, refusing to reconsider.

4. Public Sympathy and Wike’s Support As Obaseki decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), public sympathy swung in his favor. His bid for re-election received significant backing, including from Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, who supported Obaseki as a brother. This was partly due to the shared belief among Ikwerre people that they trace their roots to Benin City, fostering a cultural kinship between the two.

5. Vendetta Politics and Legislative Stalemates After his re-election under PDP, Obaseki embarked on what many saw as vendetta politics. A notable episode was his prolonged refusal to swear in the 14 pro-Oshiomhole legislators throughout his tenure, despite their repeated pleas. Similarly, his rift with his deputy, Philip Shaibu—Oshiomhole's protégé—culminated in Shaibu’s impeachment on what many viewed as frivolous grounds.

6. Falling Out with the Oba of Benin Perhaps the most damaging of Obaseki’s political miscalculations was his fallout with the revered Oba of Benin. The Benin chiefs declared Obaseki an "enemy of the Oba," a title with profound implications in Edo politics, especially given Obaseki’s roots in Oredo LGA, a key swing district. This enmity had severe electoral consequences for Obaseki and his party, PDP. The party not only lost Oredo LGA but also other key Bini-speaking LGAs like Orhionwon, Egor, and Uhunwode, where they had previously enjoyed strong support.

7. The Role of Zoning and Akpata’s Defeat Another critical dimension to the election was the challenge posed by Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP). A Bini man, Akpata entered the race despite it being the turn of Edo Central (Esan) to produce the next governor, according to the state’s informal zoning arrangement. This disregard for zoning played against Akpata, as other regions united to protect the principle of rotational governance. While Akpata attempted to leverage the popularity of LP and Peter Obi’s influence in Edo, the electorate ultimately chose to uphold equity over political opportunism, leading to Akpata’s defeat.

8. Obaseki’s Missteps and the Consequences Obaseki’s tenure as governor was marked by poor performance, which further alienated him from the electorate. Even a last-minute attempt to curry favor with civil servants by implementing a new minimum wage failed to improve his standing. His failure to mend relations with the Oba and key stakeholders sealed his fate, as the words “enemy of the Oba” carried a political weight too heavy for him to bear.

Key Lessons to Learn:

Lesson 1: Forgiveness is Key to Political Longevity The cycle of unforgiveness between Oshiomhole and Obaseki played a significant role in their political downfalls. Four years ago, Edo voters rallied behind Obaseki, sympathetic to his plight against Oshiomhole’s refusal to forgive. However, when Obaseki exhibited similar traits, the same electorate turned against him. The message is clear—learn to let go of grudges, as bitterness can quickly turn the tide of public opinion.

Lesson 2: Zoning Matters Akpata’s candidacy serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting zoning arrangements in Nigerian politics. Despite the enthusiastic crowds at his rallies, driven by Peter Obi's popularity, the electorate ultimately prioritized equity and rotational representation. Zoning is a delicate balance in Nigeria’s political landscape, and swimming against its current often leads to failure, as evidenced by Akpata’s loss.

Lesson 3: Don’t Swim Against the Tide Akpata’s defeat highlights the risk of challenging established norms. Where there is a widely accepted zoning agreement, candidates who defy it will likely face strong opposition from other zones. The lesson is simple—don’t fight against an established tide, or you risk being swept away. Whether or not Akpata was backed by APC is inconsequential—the electorate’s adherence to zoning was the deciding factor.

Lesson 4: Elections Are Rarely Perfect While there were reports of rigging in favor of APC in some local government areas, notably in Edo North, it is essential to acknowledge that no election is without its imperfections. Nonetheless, the broader political dynamics played a more significant role in shaping the outcome.

In conclusion, the Edo election offers valuable lessons on forgiveness, zoning, and political strategy. As future elections approach, candidates and political actors would do well to take these lessons to heart.

Politics / Nigeria's Rulling Party Wins First Test Since Tinubu Was Elected by Celestialsword: 1:12am On Sep 24
The electoral commission declared Monday Okpebholo winner on Sunday
Nigeria's ruling party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), has won its first big electoral test since Bola Tinubu became president last year, despite the dire state of the country's economy.
In the southern Edo state, which had previously been in the hands of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Monday Okpebholo defeated the PDP's Asue Ighodalo.
He gained 291,667 votes against 247,274 for Ighodalo.
However, the PDP has complained of fraud and vowed to challenge the result in court.

"The way these elections are going, they are probably going to be the worst elections in the history of this country," said PDP candidate Ighodalo.
The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD-West Africa), which monitored the election, accused both the PDP and APC of vote-buying and also said election official had been intimidated in some areas.
Although the PDP had previously been in power in Edo, the state has been in the hands of the APC for many years so its victory isn't necessarily a huge surprise.
But given Nigeria's economic situation, some analysts had thought the APC could lose.
The country is experiencing its worst economic crisis in a generation with annual inflation at 34% - the highest in almost three decades.
Food prices have risen even faster - for example, in the commercial hub, Lagos, yams, a staple food, cost almost four times more than they did a year ago.
Last month, massive protests were held across the country over the economic situation.
Political analyst Muzammil Yakasai told the BBC that election violence had prevented some people from voting.
“I don't think the election in itself is a reflection of how people in Edo state and Nigeria see the APC at the moment.”
Another test awaits the APC in another governorship election in the south-western Ondo state in November.
Who is Monday Okpebholo?
Before his latest victory, he represented Edo Central as a senator at the National Assembly in an election he won last year.
Born in 1970, Okpebholo, has a degree in Business Administration from the University of Abuja and a masters in policy and leadership studies from the same institution.
Married with two children, the 54-year-old was charged earlier this year over allegations that he had falsified the date on his birth certificate.
He has not commented on the matter which is still in court. However, now that he's a governor, he has immunity from prosecution.

Raw Honey
Raw honey stands out as one of the most remarkable natural sweeteners, boasting an impressive nutritional profile that sets it apart from its refined counterparts. Unprocessed and unfiltered, raw honey retains its inherent enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, making it a true superfood.

One of the key benefits of raw honey is its ability to support a healthy immune system. The enzymes and antimicrobial properties present in raw honey can help fight off harmful bacteria and promote the growth of beneficial gut flora. Additionally, the antioxidants in raw honey can neutralize free radicals, reducing the risk of oxidative stress and inflammation.

Beyond its immune-boosting properties, raw honey also offers a gentler impact on blood sugar levels compared to refined sugar. Its low glycemic index ensures a more gradual release of energy, helping to regulate blood sugar fluctuations and potentially reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.

When it comes to incorporating raw honey into your diet, the options are endless. Drizzle it over your morning oatmeal, stir it into your tea, or use it as a natural sweetener in your baking recipes. Just be mindful of the heat, as raw honey is best consumed in its raw, uncooked state to preserve its nutritional benefits.

Stevia
Stevia, a natural sweetener derived from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant, has gained tremendous popularity in recent years as a viable alternative to artificial sweeteners and refined sugar.

One of the primary advantages of stevia is its ability to support healthy blood sugar levels. Unlike sugar, which can cause spikes and crashes in blood glucose, stevia has a minimal impact on insulin production and maintains a stable blood sugar response. This makes it an excellent choice for individuals with diabetes or those looking to manage their weight and maintain a balanced metabolism.

Stevia’s versatility extends beyond its health benefits. It can be used in a wide range of applications, from sweetening your morning coffee to baking delectable desserts. The key is to use it judiciously, as a little goes a long way. When substituting stevia for sugar in recipes, start with a small amount and gradually increase until you achieve the desired sweetness level.

Dates
Dates, the sweet and plump fruits from the date palm tree, have long been revered for their exceptional nutritional value and versatility as a natural sweetener. These delectable treats are packed with an array of essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber, making them a healthier alternative to refined sugar.

One of the standout features of dates is their ability to provide a natural caramel-like sweetness without the need for added sugars or artificial ingredients. This makes them an excellent choice for those seeking to satisfy their sweet cravings while also nourishing their bodies.

Beyond their sweetening capabilities, dates have also been linked to various health benefits. Studies suggest that they may help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of stroke, making them a heart-healthy addition to your diet.

Coconut Sugar
Coconut sugar, derived from the sap of the coconut palm tree, has emerged as a popular natural sweetener that offers a unique blend of flavor and nutritional benefits. Unlike refined white sugar, which is stripped of its inherent nutrients, coconut sugar retains a wide array of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

One of the standout features of coconut sugar is its low glycemic index, which means it is absorbed more slowly by the body, resulting in a more gradual rise in blood sugar levels. This property makes coconut sugar an attractive choice for individuals concerned about managing their blood sugar or maintaining a balanced diet.

Coconut sugar’s versatility extends beyond its health benefits. Its caramel-like flavor and granular texture make it an excellent substitute for traditional white sugar in a wide range of recipes, from baked goods to sauces and marinades. When using coconut sugar, you can simply replace it cup-for-cup in your favorite recipes, allowing you to enjoy the same sweet indulgence with added nutritional value.

Maple Syrup
Maple syrup, a beloved staple from the Northeast, stands out as a natural sweetener that not only delights the taste buds but also offers a remarkable nutritional profile. Derived from the sap of maple trees, this golden elixir is a true gift from nature, packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

One of the standout features of maple syrup is its impressive mineral content. It is particularly rich in manganese, a crucial mineral that plays a vital role in bone health, metabolism, and antioxidant defense. Additionally, maple syrup contains significant amounts of zinc, calcium, and potassium, all of which contribute to overall well-being.

Beyond its mineral wealth, maple syrup also boasts a diverse array of beneficial plant compounds, including polyphenols and flavonoids. These antioxidants work to neutralize harmful free radicals, reducing the risk of chronic diseases and supporting a healthy immune system.

It’s worth noting that not all maple syrups are created equal. Opt for the darker, grade B varieties, as they tend to be richer in antioxidants and possess a more robust maple flavor. By making the switch to this natural sweetener, you can indulge your sweet cravings while nourishing your body with a wealth of essential nutrients.

Blackstrap Molasses
Blackstrap molasses, the final byproduct of the sugar refining process, is a remarkable natural sweetener that sets itself apart with its impressive mineral content and unique, robust flavor. Unlike refined white sugar, which has been stripped of its inherent nutrients, blackstrap molasses retains a treasure trove of essential vitamins and minerals.

One of the standout features of blackstrap molasses is its high concentration of iron, a crucial mineral for maintaining healthy red blood cells and preventing anemia. Additionally, it is a rich source of copper, calcium, magnesium, and manganese, all of which play vital roles in supporting bone health, energy production, and immune function.

Beyond its mineral wealth, blackstrap molasses also boasts a remarkable antioxidant profile. Studies have shown that this dark, viscous sweetener contains a higher concentration of polyphenols and other beneficial plant compounds compared to refined sugar and other sweeteners. These antioxidants can help neutralize free radicals, reducing the risk of oxidative stress and chronic diseases.

While the bold, slightly bitter-sweet flavor of blackstrap molasses may not appeal to everyone’s taste buds, it can be easily incorporated into a variety of recipes. Use it to add depth and richness to baked goods, marinades, and sauces.

Dear Peter Obi,

You lost an election. That is a weakness. But losing your mind because you lost an election elevates your weakness to a wickedness.

Your party scored only 22,763 votes out of approximately half a million votes. You got less than 5% of the total votes cast. Your candidate lost his polling unit, ward, and Local Government Area.

Your candidate was publicly rebuked by the revered Oba of Benin, who scolded him for lying that he was a "son of the palace".

You and your party had no chance of winning or path to victory.

Face facts, Peter. It is over. You lost. You lost fairly. Only your hubris is preventing you from seeing it clearly.

Next time, do not rely on social media polls.

Your party was divided. You, Abure, Apapa and Arabambi were at loggerheads. You and your cronies could not even give an honest account of how you spent monies donated to your campaign.

The optics were terrible for the Labour Party going into the #EdoDecides24. So stop looking for scapegoats. Do not lose your mind as well as the election. Stop crying and start trying.

The Edo election was largely free, fair and transparent and overwhelmingly reflected the freely given will of the people of Edo State.

If you take the time to see the negative fall out, they are almost all from people and celebrities who are not from Edo State and do not live there. I have family, businesses, buildings, and employees in Edo State, and as such, I have an ear to the ground.

I see too many people being emotional over the outcome of the #EdoDecides24. Emotions are good for activism and sometimes for chasing women if you are a romantic. But they do not win elections on Election Day or at the courts. If you want to win, you have got to be rational.

This was an election of one godfather against the other. It was not Ighodalo who was defeated. He is an excellent candidate. It was Obaseki who was rejected. It was not Okpebholo that won. It was Oshiomhole and Shaibu.

If Ighodalo and Okpebholo had gone mano a mano, without the aid of godfathers in the picture, I am convinced that Ighodalo would have won.

The only difference between the two contending camps is that Obaseki relied on his office, while Oshiomhole and Shaibu focused on the people.

And since politics is about addition, Oshiomhole and Shaibu won the political arithmetics.

Obaseki failed to understand that in politics, no matter your position, you must still try to avoid subtraction. No matter how popular you think, you are, if your opponent is practising addition and you are implementing subtraction, the result of the election is a foregone conclusion, even if you allow social media to mislead you. Remember, there are no polling booths on the Internet.

Fashion / 5 Beauty Trends Taking Over Nigeria In 2024 by Celestialsword: 5:10pm On Sep 22
Nigerian beauty enthusiasts are embracing trends that celebrate individuality, cultural heritage, and sustainability.

Nigerian beauty enthusiasts are embracing trends that celebrate individuality, cultural heritage, and sustainability. As the global beauty industry continues to evolve, Nigerian influencers, beauty brands, and consumers are leading the way in shaping new styles and standards.

Here are five beauty trends that are taking over Nigeria in 2024;

1.Skinimalism:
In 2024, the “skinimalism” trend is making waves across Nigeria. This beauty philosophy emphasises the importance of natural beauty by encouraging simpler, more minimalistic skincare routines. Rather than layering multiple products, Nigerians are opting for streamlined regimens that focus on enhancing the skin’s natural glow. The goal is to prioritise skin health with fewer but more effective products.

This trend has gained popularity as more people recognise the need to invest in long-term skincare solutions rather than quick fixes. With a greater focus on hydration, sun protection, and natural oils, Nigerian beauty enthusiasts are embracing a fresh, healthy look that highlights their skin’s texture and tone.

Skincare now takes precedence, and the "no-makeup" makeup look—subtle, fresh, and glowy—is now more popular among beauty enthusiasts.

2. C-Sculpt Blush
Post-Barbie movie blush techniques have caught fire in Nigeria. The C-sculpt blush application, where blush is applied above the cheekbones and drawn upwards to the temples, is becoming the go-to for a youthful, lifted appearance. This technique gives the face a natural, sculpted effect without the need for contouring. Brown undertones and soft coral shades are popular choices for this trend.

3. Short, Natural Hair
While long hair still holds its appeal, 2024 is witnessing a growing appreciation for short, natural hairstyles. Women are embracing their natural textures in shorter, more manageable cuts like buzz cuts, skin fades, and stretched curls are becoming increasingly popular. Whether permed or kept natural, these styles reflect a mix of practicality and personal expression, driven in part by economic factors.

4. Chrome Nails
When it comes to nail art, Nigerians are not holding back. Chrome nails, with their futuristic metallic shine, are making waves at parties and red-carpet events. Whether in soft silver or bold iridescent shades, chrome nails offer a statement look that complements both bold and neutral outfits. This trend speaks to the Nigerian love for fashion-forward, glamorous styles.

5. Glossy Lips and Dewy Skin
In contrast to the heavy, matte makeup looks of previous years, 2024 is seeing a shift toward glossy lips and dewy skin. Nigerian beauty enthusiasts are gravitating toward lip glosses in neutral tones that provide a fresh, youthful finish. The days of overlined, matte lips have given way to glossy, moisturized pouts that highlight the natural lip shape

Paired with glossy lips is the dewy skin trend, which focuses on achieving a hydrated, glowing complexion. Highlighters, illuminating primers, and hydrating foundations are being used to create a radiant look that enhances natural beauty. This trend reflects the ongoing desire for skin that looks healthy and luminous, complementing the minimalist makeup approach.

The beauty trends taking over Nigeria in 2024 showcase a perfect blend of bold innovation and a return to natural beauty. From minimalist makeup looks to wellness-driven beauty products, Nigerians are embracing trends that highlight individuality, creativity, and well-being. As these trends continue to evolve, they offer exciting possibilities for beauty enthusiasts across the country.

I am fifty, and I have never seen focus in prayer the way I have seen it with Muslims. When a true Muslim is praying, the type of concentration they observe is beyond military in its discipline. For that brief five or so minutes, they are dead to this world and transported to the next. No carnal activity distracts them. You can be shouting, 'fire, fire', and they will ignore you until they finish that salāh.

The focus is so razor like, and reminds me of the prayer of our Lord and Saviour, Yeshua (Jesus), in the Garden of Gethsemane, at the Mount of Olives, who was so focused in prayer to God (that is to prove to you that He Himself is not God, but someone Who is also Subject to God, prays to Him and receives direction from God) that His Sweat became drops of blood-Luke 22:44.

And if you look at the way and manner Yeshua (Jesus) prayed his prayer of supplication, Matthew 26:39 says, "he fell with his face to the ground and prayed". Does that remind you of something? It seems Muslims also pray like our Lord and Saviour prayed.

I am not a Muslim, but I am a student of all Abrahamic faiths, especially Judaism, Orthodox Christianity (VERY different from the Christianity you think you know) and Islam.

I am a follower of Yeshua and a lover of all humanity. I do not see Muslims as my enemy. Doing so would make me an enemy of God!

Permit me to express my gratitude to Otunba Gbenga Daniel, who paid for a plaque at the Mount of Olives and the River Jordan, praising God in Yoruba. I almost shed tears when I went there and saw it with my eyes. E seun, sir!

Nigerians are hopeless people, and they don't learn. It's a waist of time to pity most Nigerians coz they are deceptive and difficult people.

How can any sane man / woman still collect money, or any inducement and still thump print for APC? Despite the evil your eyes have seen.

I am not partisan, but this is a mystery.

don't blame the common citizens, there's hunger everywhere, since they don't see any dividend of democracy, they should just collect whatever is available,no matter how little

Shimite Love, Special Adviser on Trade and Export to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in Delta State, says the State Government is working with Koko and Kwale Free Trade Zones in the State for entrepreneurs to come in and do business.

Love also calls on investors and financially-stable individuals to help in the development of the zones to create more employment opportunities in the State, saying, ‘the same money used in buying more expensive cars by an individual could be invested in the building of warehouses in the zones.”

She added, “A developer, who has built hotel in Asaba and Warri, and looking for another place to build should consider building a factory in the free trade zones because it is still the same price.
That way, we would help build more employment opportunities and give people more access to financial freedom.”

According to her, there are business opportunities in every challenging situations, including the prevailing economic hardship in the Country, stressing the need for people to look beyond the current economic situation and see opportunities that abound everywhere.

Speaking to newsmen, Love said that designs for the residential areas within the FTZs had been completed for proper housing of investors, entrepreneurs and their employees, explaining that the operations of Koko Port would boost ease of doing business in the State.

“The heavy duty factories, the light factories, the warehouses, the recreation areas. All of these are business opportunities. Whether you want to have a Salon, factory, office complex for forwarding and trading agents, everything is business opportunities that everybody can build”, she said.

Love highlighted the benefits of registering with the FTZs and encouraged importers and exporters to register their companies with the zones as it covers the residency visa and work permit of expatriate that work in such companies among other things.

She noted that ships now move from Koko Port to other parts of Africa, South Africa, UK and other parts of the World; which she said, is an added advantage.

“So, we are saying that if you have agricultural products that may take a long time in other ports before they are cleared, rather than accumulating demurrage, you can come to Koko Port. We are ready to do business with you at lower costs,’ she said describing the free zone as an added advantage.

She explained that Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration is poised to develop the State’s economy through trade and export with the appropriate policy and strategic plan

I would advise you to watch what you post on social media and what information you help to spread.

Eventually one of you people peddling information that you can't defend with evidence will be arrested, charged to court and made a scapegoat. Those who liked your post here will abandone you to your suffering.

Do you have evidence that the President bought a yacht? And you can prove in court that the plane was bought for N150 billion abi?

You think you can't be traced. Continue.
It was published by Daily post newspaper , moreover when accusations are made against any government, they have to debunk it or accept it,

I am sure you are among those paid stipends by the government to support it on social media.

I also hope you are not also feeling the present economic hardship in the country.

Nonsense! This is the same mindset of those who emigrated back to the East right after the June 12th, 1993 protest. The fear-mongering hoard claimed they were escaping what they said was tension, perceived threats, and aggressions back then too. Guess what? Nothing happened after they left. undecided

I lived in Lagos at that time and can report that nothing of what they feared happened. After the protests, everyone went back to their lives as though nothing had happened. It was the Northerners who had reason to fear but everyone went back to their regular lives.
Prevention is better and cheaper than cure.Dont think you're smarter
