Foreign Affairs / Video: Sudanese Woman Flogged For Getting Into Car With Man Who Isn't Relative by Clinton9s: 12:19pm On Oct 09, 2013

Sudan’s public order law lets police officers publicly whip women who are accused of public indecency. The woman in this YouTube video was reportedly riding in a car with a man who wasn’t her husband or an immediate family member.

A disturbing new YouTube video shows a Sudanese woman crying out in pain during a public flogging.

She was reportedly guilty of riding in a car with a man who wasn’t her husband or an immediate family member, an offense that is prohibited by Sudan’s public order law.

The woman, reportedly named Halima, crouches on the ground and tries to cover her head with a light pink cloth while a police officer walks around her with a whip, stopping to aim before lashing out at her body.

At about 0:39 seconds into the video, the police officer warns the woman, “This is so you don’t get into cars anymore,” according to France24.

A crowd of onlookers stands nearby, simply watching while the woman is attacked.

The woman was reportedly guilty of violating Sudan’s public order law, which prohibits women from acts of public indecency. She was allegedly riding in a car with a man she wasn’t related to.

The video was anonymously sent to a journalist, who uploaded it on Sept. 17. It is unclear when the incident took place.
The accents in the video suggest it was filmed around Khartoum, Sudan’s capital city.

Khartoum’s governor, Abdul Rahman Al Khidir, reportedly said that he didn’t think the flogging was properly carried out. According to Opposing Views, he still thought the woman was “rightfully punished according to the Shar’ia law.”

Shar’ia law, a system of Islamic religious laws, is widely interpreted by Muslim communities around the world.
Sudan’s Public Order Law came into effect after General Omar al-Bashir took over as the country’s president during a 1989 military coup.

The video, uploaded to YouTube on Sept. 17, appears to have been shot in a courtyard in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital.

According to women’s rights activists, the law allows police officers to dole out punishments at their own discretion.
The "personal status" laws found in several conservative countries around the world are often vaguely worded, according to Cristina Finch, the managing director of Amnesty International's Women's Human Rights program.

"Public indecency laws can be interpreted widely, " Finch told The News. "But this is not a matter of culture or religion. Women's rights are universal and governments have an obligation under international human rights law to respect, protect, and fulfill those rights. "

Sudan's law drew international attention earlier this month after a Sudanese woman was arrested for refusing to wear a headscarf. Amira Osman Hamed, a 35-year-old engineer and activist, could get up to 40 lashes if she is convicted of the crime, according to Amnesty International.

A judge agreed to postpone Hamed’s trial until Nov. 4 after pressure from international activists.

Family / Driver’s Wife Delivered Of Quadruplets by Clinton9s: 12:09pm On Oct 09, 2013
http://activenaija..com/2013/10/drivers-wife-delivered-of-quadruplets.html#more

A Lagos driver, Kehinde Tijani, and his wife Grace, were recently blessed with a set of quadruplets at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi-Araba, Lagos, on October 1. They already have three sons before the new additions.

Ironically, what should bring joy is gradually becoming a source of worry for this couple, as Kehinde, a driver and Grace, a small-time caterer, were already living from hand to mouth before the four extra mouths put them at crossroads.

The family presently resides in a tiny, rented one-room apartment at Ajangbandi in Okokomaiko, Lagos.

They expressed gratitude to God for the gift of children, but are saddened and fearful of an uncertain future occasioned by poverty and hardship.

Kehinde, who hails from OyoState, said they need financial assistance to take care of his wife and children.

‘I need help’

He said: “I need help. I am a driver. I started driving someone last year and my monthly salary is so meager I can hardly feed three children not to talk of seven.

“I need help please. I want the government and other people, who can, to come to my aid. I don’t have money, I don’t have a house. I need about N1 million to take care of the medical bills of the children and their mother.

“My wife had two Caesarian Sections and since the birth of the babies last week they have been in an incubator. Also, with the arrival of the quadruplets, we need better accommodation for the children.”

I was told I had fibroid— Mother

Grace said: “When I discovered that I wasn’t feeling too well, I went to a private hospital, where they asked me to undergo scan.

“After the scan, they told me that I had fibroid. Then I came to LUTH and after several tests and a scan, it was revealed that I was pregnant with five babies.

“On hearing the news, I got really scared and depressed because of our hard condition. Later, I had a partial miscarriage of one of the fetus because of the fear and depression.

“I have been in the hospital since July. That was three months before I delivered, because of my health conditions. All through this period, my husband had to struggle to make ends meet.

http://activenaija..com/2013/10/drivers-wife-delivered-of-quadruplets.html#more

“Things have been difficult as he only earns N30,000 monthly, and we had three children before the arrival of these four.”
Grace from Delta state, said she has no history of multiple birth in her family.

She said: “I have been married for 10 years now. It is only my husband who is a twin. How can I take care of four babies at the same time?

“Please help us. The babies, three girls and a boy, have been placed in the incubator.

“The first baby girl weighed about 1.65kg, the second girl, 1.50kg, third girl 1.6Kg. The only boy tipped the scales at 1.45kg.”
At press time, the doctor that took the delivery was unavailable to speak on the babies chances of survival, but the spokesperson for LUTH, Mrs Hope Nwawolo, noted that the babies are in good health and medically stable.

Celebrities / My Romance With Fireman – Angela Phillips by Clinton9s: 1:14pm On Oct 05, 2013
Read more naija latest gists at http://activenaija..com

Influenced by a character better known as ‘Efe’ in the now rested soap, Behind the Clouds in the late 80’s, Nollywood actress, Angela Phillips did not hit the limelight until she starred in the blockbuster movie, Osofiason which heralded an era of comedy in the movie industry. Though in her teens then, she acted in other movies which made her face a regular feature on screen, till she decided to step aside which was not helped by the lull in the industry. Blunt and beautiful, Phillips has returned with a bang and has since shot many movies and soap operas. In this interview, the busty role interpreter who is more concerned about her relationship with her creator spoke about issues that borders on her career, love life, the industry, among others…

It has been long since you disappeared from the scene. Have you abandoned acting?

It is not possible to abandon acting. I just finished three productions in Abuja . They are- Life in Abuja , Beyond the Scar, Joshua of Our Time and I will be returning there again to shoot more films. Remarkable Night among others is in the market. I did some films last year and early this year. I have done about six films, soap operas, Igbo films, and many others that are yet to be released.

Actually, I went back to school and there was a point in time when the industry was going through a phase. It affected everybody, so, I occupied myself with other things like buying and selling, going back to school as well as working for God. I studied Public Administration in Lagos State University , LASU, but acting is my passion. It is something I love doing. If the scripts come my way, I will hit the set, but if they don’t, I engage myself in other things.

When you started acting, you were almost everywhere, what happened?

Then I was still quite young, I was not thinking of many things. I was looking for fame. I wanted my face to be in every film. So, I was not choosy as I was featuring in every film that comes my way just for me to be known because the more work you do, the more you are being recognised. But then, if you are not working, your face would not be registered in the minds of people.

Who were your contemporaries?

There are many of them. But the fact is that when they came into the industry and discovered that it was not as easy as it appeared, they left the scene and I cannot really say these are the people who are still in the industry with me. Actress Oluchi Phillips is the only person I can remember now.

There was a time when I spent a lot of time shooting a soap opera, Domino. Once you are shooting TV series, the home video producers would not give you jobs. One, you are always busy and Domino was a huge project. Sometimes, I do get scripts from the home video producers, but because I was on the set of Domino I turned down such offers.

Till date which is the most challenging movie you have done?

All my films were challenging. Is it Domino where I played the role of a 40 year old woman, or Pure Love where I acted as a blind person or Peacemaker where I played the role of a wicked married woman or is it Imabong where I had to act like a demonic Princess. Each film comes with its own challenge.

What actually influenced your decision to go into acting?

It was Efe, a character in the now rested soap opera, Behind the Clouds that influenced me. At a very tender age, each time I watched her, I wish to act like her and as providence would have it, I found myself in the industry. I was supposed to be working with one Mr. Clement and we went to Enugu with Emma Oguguo and others for a job. When we got there, the lady who speaks Owerri dialet fluently is supposed to have a bar tender and they asked me if I could speak the dialect and I replied in the affirmative. I acted as her younger sister. That was my first outing.

I was encouraged by late Sam Loco Efe, Mr. Ibu. When I came back, I felt like doing it again but the industry was very hot. It was not a place that I can really fit in. I left and came back again. I shot, Acceptance, Presidential Pardon, Pure Love, among others.

I disappeared from the

screen not because I was sexually harassed. I am a blunt person and I am not the type that somebody would say he wants to sleep with me. No, I am not desperate to go on set. Acting is something I want to do. It is not a do or die affair for me.
Then I was naïve. I felt since I am not sociable and a shy person, I should stay off the screen for a while.

What’s your favourite books?

I like reading the book written by my dad in the Lord, Rev. Dr. Sign Fireman, The Greatest Revelation. I love the book because it contains a lot of information about life and how to be at peace with your God after you are being saved as a Christian.

How did you meet Fireman?

I came to church like every other person. Before then, I was not a Christian. I decided not to go to church for some personal reasons. I used to watch Fireman whenever he was organising his crusade and I knew that some day, I would attend his church. So, I was at home one day when suddenly I decided to be closer to God. Not too long after this sudden feeling, I went to his church and everything changed. I became interested in the way he teaches the Word as well as he handles life issues. Since then, I have been here.

When did you become born again?

All the while, I have been a Christian and I have given my life to Christ. The only thing is that I was just floating not until I met Fireman. I now know the difference between being saved, being born again and what follows thereafter. Every church I go to would always say if you want to give your life to Christ, come out. Then I was still keeping relationships and all that. But when I came to Fireman’s Church, it was a different ball game. You cannot be fooling yourself and the same time say you are a born again Christian. I had to give up a lot of things for the sake of making heaven.

There was this rumour that you dated Fireman before he got married?

It is a very big lie! Please, I wouldn’t want to talk about it. There is no iota of truth in it at all. It is just a father daughter relationship. He is my spiritual father. People do not understand this thing we call father figure. A father figure is somebody who corrects you. A father is who you listen to, who impacts good things into your life. There are some rubbish things you may want to do but because of that person, you just have to stop it. It is not all about age.

As a philanthropist, what have you benefited from him?

My main purpose of coming to church is to seek God first. The Bible says, seek ye first the kingdom of God and every other things shall be added unto you. I am not here to benefit material things from him.

Most churches make Christianity very boring but my reason for being here is that I am enjoying the Bible very much. I am knowing more about God and my destiny. Dr. Fireman is grounded in the word. You cannot come to his church for one to two months and remain the same.

Do you hope to become a minister of the word someday?

I am a minister now. Inasmuch as you preach the word, you encourage people, you are a minister. I am an Assistant Pastor in Apapa but I am still under somebody as a trainee.

Are you not thinking of settling down?

If any good man comes to marry me and I like the person, why not? Maybe the ones coming are the wrong ones. I will like to marry a God fearing man, a trustworthy person, a friend who will be like my brother, father and husband. Everything rolled in one.

How do you see life?

I see life as give and take. Try to be yourself. Live and let live.
Any Regrets!

No regrets, it’s been all good.

Sometime ago you were also romantically linked with Chico Ejiro?

There is nothing like that. I was close to many people. I just shot a film with him last year and I played a lead role. It is a lie. So, have I also dated Fidelis Duker who has featured me in many of his films? I prefer men being my friends than ladies because they don’t have problem. Ladies gossip a lot. Men tell you how it is.

If you are not an actress, what would you be doing?

Maybe what I am doing today. I love encouraging people. All the while it is being there, it is all about ministering. It is not something I woke up one morning and decided to do. Destiny cannot be removed.

Hobby

Reading , quiet time, cooking.

What is your comment on Nollywood so far?

A lot has been happening. It is not what it used to be. I started in the mid 90s. Then, it used to be fun. People appreciated us. A lot has changed like the quality of film we used to do then. When you are on set and you are leaving, some people would be crying just because you are done and travelling back to your station. But these days, you just hit the set, do your stuff and take your leave.

I am not impressed with the situation. Then, when you come into the industry, you don’t just start acting, you have to undergo training in acting.

Have you ever been sexually harassed?

Not at all. I have not been sexually harassed because I have never been desperate about the job. When some actresses say they are sexually harassed, you look at them, purse and then, you ask yourself if you have done anything that would want a man to sexually harass you. Sometimes, you see some of these girls half naked. What do you expect?

What do you want to change about yourself?

I love the way I am. My problem is that I trust people easily and I get hurt when I find out that people are not what they say they really are. Some people are so fake that it would be oozing out of them.

How many times have you been heart broken?

I will never allow my heart to be broken. Then, when I was dating, I knew when to end a relationship when it is not going my way. Sometimes, people come into your life for one reason or the other and when they fulfil it, they automatically stage a walk out. That is the way I see relationship, whether platonic or not.

Any plan of producing a movie?

I have one script. I was supposed to produce a movie last year but something happened, so, it is pending. But we are still working on it. It is going to be of quality standard.

Advice

My advice to up and coming actresses is to be less desperate but humble because humility is what would retain you.

Where are you from?

I am from Lagos State while my mother is from Imo. I do speak Yoruba and I have done a couple of Yoruba movies like Igbako, Adun, Irapada, among others. I grew up in Lagos . I had so many wonderful childhood memories.
I could be very naughty in the sense that I make noise a lot, play with kids.

Led by the Chairperson of the Zamfara Widows Association, Hajiya Suwaiba Isa and their patron Alhaji Sa’idu Goshe, the women said they were not living a normal life and needed husbands to become whole.

“Many of us cannot afford two meals in a day because there are no men to support us,” they said.

The patron said the association has over 8,000 women, comprising 5,380 divorcees, 2,200 widows, 1,200 orphans and 80 others, whom he said, were looking for men to marry.

He said the women also needed assistance to purchase household items such as beds, mattresses and other basic necessities needed to move to their husband’s houses.

Goshe appealed to the commission to assist the association in screening suitors for the women.

He said the screening would determine the suitors health status, source of livelihood and ability to maintain a family.

Responding, the Chairman of the commission, Dr Atiku Zawuyya, commended the association for the initiative, saying it would assist in ridding the society of women of easy virtues.

Zawuyya promised to present the matter to the state government for necessary action, but urged the patron to also set up a similar body for men to make the pairing exercise easier.

Religion / Enugu Women Demand Immediate Release Of Catholic Priest From Prison by Clinton9s: 1:46pm On Sep 27, 2013
http://naijasignal..com/2013/09/enugu-women-demand-immediate-release-of.html

The crisis rocking Mmaku community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State took another dimension on Thursday as several women stormed Enugu, the state capital, demanding the immediate release of the detained catholic priest.

The Parish Priest of St. Theresa Parish, Mmaku, Reverend Father James Ani was on Tuesday remanded in prison custody on order of a magistrate court sitting in Enugu.

DailyPost learnt that Rev. Ani’s problem is as a result of the running battle he had with the Bishop of Awgu Catholic Diocese, Bishop John Okoye.

However, members of the Catholic Women Organization in the parish stormed the Enugu Government House yesterday calling for an end to the incaceration of the priest.

They equally visited all the media houses in the state, including Edinbugh, which has a concentration of print media offices.

The protesters alleged that the Bishop was fighting Fr. Ani because he refused to remit monies realized from the church to the Diocesan office.

“The Bishop is not happy that he is using the money to develop the church”, the protesters told journalists.

http://naijasignal..com/2013/09/enugu-women-demand-immediate-release-of.html

The women who were led by the chairperson of the CWO, Mrs.Cordelia Orjioke, told pressmen in Enugu that come what may, they want their priest released from detention because they did not see anything bad he did other than that he did not allow the bishop and parish council members to siphon the church fund for personal uses.

They mentioned those allegedly backing the bishop to include Messrs James Ede, Patrick Orjinta, Fred Obasi, Edwin Igbokwe among eleven others displaced on the placards.

The priest was arrested in Awgu and was reminded in police cell since Saturday and was taken to a magistrate court in Enugu from where he was eventually remanded in prison custody.

DailyPost recalls that a magistrate court sitting in Enugu has remanded Rev. Fr. James Ani in prison custody over his alleged involvement in armed robbery and kidnapping.

Also arraigned alongside the priest were Ugwu Marcel, Obasi Felix and Nobert Eke and some other members of his Parish at Mmaku, in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

They were docked before the court on Tuesday, on a four count charge of armed robbery, attempted kidnapping, among others.

The police alleged that the accused persons had on September 18, 2013 at Imeohia Mmaku village in Awgu, while armed with offensive weapons such as cutlasses and sticks attempted unlawfully to kill one inspector Cosmos Nzeribe and a team of police officers attached to police headquarters Enugu.

http://naijasignal..com/2013/09/enugu-women-demand-immediate-release-of.html

In the second charge, the suspects were charged for unlawful assault on police officers that went to perform their lawful duty, adding that the officers were also prevented from carrying out their duties.

The third charge read that the suspects had on the same date, time and venue willfully and unlawfully damaged a Toyota Corolla car, with registration number KPP 450 XA.

They were equally alleged to have allegedly willfully and unlawfully damaged a Toyota Corolla with registration number XY 770 ENU.

When the case was called up, the suspects pleaded not guilty.

The magistrate ordered that they be remanded in prison custody pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP.

The latest development is the peak of the crisis that has bedeviled Mmaku community since the beginning of this year.

Celebrities / Tupac's Mom Sues For $1.1 Million by Clinton9s: 12:58pm On Sep 26, 2013
http://naijasignal..com

You haven't met a protective mother until you've met Tupac's mom ... she's now suing over unpaid royalties stemming from the late rapper's posthumous album ... to the tune of $1.1 million.

Afeni Shakur -- the co-administrator of Tupac's estate -- filed the lawsuit against a company called Entertainment One, claiming it breached a contract to pay Tupac's estate royalties on "Beginnings: The Lost Tapes," which was released in June 2007.

According to the suit, E1 purchased the rights to Tupac's music (previously owned by Death Row Records) in July. FYI, Death Row went bankrupt in 2006.

http://naijasignal..com

Afeni claims E1 now owes Tupac's estate $1.1 million ... and it better pony up fast. She also wants E1 to hand over the master recordings of all Tupac's unreleased music.

Hell hath no fury like a mother scorned. Calls to E1 weren't returned.

Politics / Magazine To Pay Gov.oshiomhole N25m Over False Story Of Impregnating A Student by Clinton9s: 11:17am On Sep 26, 2013

A Benin High Court has awarded Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, N25million as damages in a libel suit he instituted against the publishers of News of the People, a soft sell weekly magazine.
Governor Oshiomhole had dragged the soft sell weekly magazine to court demanding N250million as damages over their report with the headline: ‘Oshiomhole’s sex power exposed: Impregnates young girl six months after death of wife.”

The magazine had reported that Governor Oshiomhole impregnated a student of the state-owned, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, bought the said girl a jeep and interfered in the academic activities of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, on behalf of the girl, adding that Governor Oshiomole used sexual performance enhancement drugs and that he had performed traditional marriage rites precedent to marriage between him and the said girl.

The governor told the court that he demanded damages because the said publication caused him and his children psychological trauma, six months after the death of his wife, as the libelous piece was widely circulated, to coincide with preparations for one of his daughter’s wedding.
He said:

“When I called a brother governor to sponsor my daughter’s wedding, the governor said he was confused, and asked me if I was the one doing the marriage or my daughter. He added that he was reading a magazine which said that I was about getting married to a university student, and that the said wife-to-be was already pregnant.”

In his judgment, the trial Judge, Justice Efe Ikponmwen, also ordered the magazine to publish a well-worded retraction and apology in a similarly conspicuous manner in an edition of the magazine.

He held that the governor’s evidence proved that the magazine’s publication was libelous, and that even though the public has a right to know about a public officer, such information should be in line with the law and must not be in bad light.

Following allegations of plans by some senior officers to cash in on the distribution of the new Police Neon Blue uniform to junior officers for financial benefits, the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar has directed that it be issued free of charge.

Vanguard gathered that the new uniforms, which were hitherto meant for only senior police officers before Abubakar assumed office, is now to be distributed to all police personnel, including inspectors down to constables.

At the time of filing this report, Vanguard gathered that 67,500 pairs of the uniform, 75,000 new belts and 90,500 new black berets had been released by force headquarters to commands across the country for distribution to rank and file.

The new uniform, which came into being during the tenure of Sir Mike Okiro as the Inspector General of Police, will eventually replace the existing black uniform which at some point will be phased out.

Contacted on the development, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Frank Mba, explained that the release was the first batch of the uniform, noting that there would be other batches until all the over 300,000 personnel of the police force, were kitted.

Mba said the IG directed the distribution to all personnel as part of his determination to build a people friendly police force, as well as help checkmate duplication or faking of the former uniform by hoodlums and criminals.

“In line with Police regulations and long standing traditions of the force, the uniforms are to be issued free of charge to all police personnel.

“The IG directed that the new set of uniform must be evenly distributed and they are for Inspectors, rank and file,” he said.

On the advantages of the blue synthetic uniform over the former, he said “the neon synthetic blue is easy to wash, dries very quickly, is less absorbent of heat and is climate friendly. “Moreover, blue is recognized internationally as Police colour and it conforms to international best practices.”

Celebrities / The Eedris Abdulkareem Interview: ‘remedies Will Be Back’ by Clinton9s: 3:05am On Sep 25, 2013

The Hip-hop artiste, who now loves to refer to himself as a social crusader and activist sat down for a chat with NET, talking about the state of the music industry in Nigeria and interestingly how he plans to resurrect his former band.

What have you been up to lately?

I have been busy as always doing what I love to do best. Not with the force of people pushing me to do it, but with the agreement that this is what I’d be doing forever and that’s why I’m still doing it

At the time you guys started this thing did you think it would be this big?

Yeah, God told me about it. He said to me, my son, stand up and go to Lagos. Go to your brother Dr. Fresh. Give him the needed support and make the hip-hop thing come to pass. I listened to God and came to Lagos. I saw Dr. Fresh, met Tony, met Eddy, and it came to pass, the birth of hip-hop in Nigeria. So, with that happening, God made me an elder-state’s person in the business, a revolutionary and one of the people that made the industry happen. I’ve been very grateful to Allah because he’s the reason why I’m still here.

Looking at the state of hip-hop in Nigeria, do you think it’s still towing that dream you had for it or has it gone off-track?

No, what you see today is boys coming out of the streets, and following a trend because that trend is bringing in money. And the reason why they have been able to do that is because we created that platform, but that’s not what we created the platform for. We created the platform to use music as a tool to add value to the society and to create employment like we have done. Most of these boys, their parents used to insult us back then saying,’look at these OPPs that don’t have future’, but today, the same parents are the ones sending their children to go to the studio to record, shooting videos for them and paying big money for promos because they found out music has now become very lucrative. ‘Food don done, everybody carry spoon, na your mama cook the food, abi na your papa cook the food?’

We made it possible for the multinationals to respect Nigerian artistes. They didn’t treat Nigerian artistes with respect, but we made it happen. Take music out of the radio for one day and see what will happen. What you see today, is just boys singing about women and other irrelevant subjects. These boys that are coming in, doing music now, most of these dudes would have been carrying guns. We are grateful that we have been able to create employment for the so-called rappers on behalf of the Federal Government.

You have managed to remain consistent through the years. How have you been able to do that?

One, because I have a strong faith with God. If you grew up from the North and you are a Muslim, you won’t be scared of anybody but God. I believe that if you have God in everything you do, God’s favour and grace would always be with you. Number two, my songs are not just songs to make you dance, or tell you a story about a girl you have never met before. They talk about ills in the society, education, politics, science, streets, unemployment, electricity for the people and a lot of things. People can relate to that, and that’s why I’m still consistent, and I’m not changing at all. My shoe size has been there, none of them can wear it. I’m a social crusader. I talk about what is happening in the society and that’s why I’ll always be relevant.

You have often referred to yourself as a social crusader and even went head-to-head with a one-time president of this country. Were there times you were afraid for your life?

I grew up in Kano, and we were taught in the Quran that Allah is the greatest. You’re not supposed to be scared of anybody but Allah. So, I already made up my mind what I wanted to do from the beginning. Because the truth is bitter, many people would never like it. We all can’t be the same, so I chose to speak on behalf of the people and to be the voice of the voiceless, and I’m happy.

I remember when I sang the song ‘Jagajaga’, about 23 million Nigerian youths voted me to raise the Olympic torch. Raising the Olympic torch is bigger than winning the Grammy awards. The Olympic is talking about peace and love all over the world, and it’s enough for me. My responsibility is never to disappoint the people and to always speak for the people. Obasanjo said my papa and my mama ‘Jagajaga’. I was so happy that my message got to the president. The president couldn’t hide it. He came on National TV and promoted me. Secondly, he’s my mugu because he made me a super star, there is no song of mine that I won’t put Obasanjo’s name. So, Obasanjo is part of my mugu and I go dey take am chop. Thirdly, I’m doing this to speak for the people, and that’s why people will always relate to me.

Do you see changes in the society so far?

Yes. Changes from state governors who have like minds, and are radical like me. An example is the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomole. There was no good coming out of Edo State for eight years when Lucky Igbenedion was there. Oshiomole has made it happen, and there are a few governors out there that are doing the same thing. So there are changes, and the revolution is on.

What are your thoughts on the state of the music industry?

You see, when the top is messed up, you don’t expect the bottom to be any better. What the politicians have taught Nigerians is corruption. Our music industry is not regulated. What are the responsibilities of PMAN? Musicians are not united because some of them feel that they have arrived, and they fail to understand that they wouldn’t have arrived if not for people like us who paved the way for them. Until they get into trouble that’s when they would be looking for friends. Then they would now think to themselves and say, ‘oh, wait a minute, Is this how the game is? So it’s all about politics? Damn! I should have played it well’.

NCC is one of the biggest problems we have in this industry. I’m talking about giving space for multiple collecting society. You can’t monopolise the industry. You can’t just bring somebody that is your friend, and schooled in America and basically studied Accounting or Economics to come and head the Nigerian Copyrights Commission. He doesn’t know anything about music, copyrights and royalties. He shouldn’t be there. Secondly, the so called COSON don’t even know what they are doing. The Attorney General has given license to COSON to be the only collecting society, meanwhile COSON does not have the international right as a collecting society. It’s only MCSN that has the right. There has to be room for multiple collecting societies in the country.

The musicians themselves should also be educated about this issue. It’s not just the shows that you should depend on to earn revenue. Is it when your song is no longer on the radio that you want to start knowing what copyright is all about? Thank God the matter is currently in House of Assembly and the House has heard from both sides. We are waiting for the House to make the final decision. In America and in the UK, they have multiple collecting society, so, why can’t we have the same?

How was growing up for you?

I grew up with a mum. I never had a dad. I lost my dad when I was two. She is my hero, she is my everything. She saw me through life. I looked at myself and thought, if a mother could do all these to bring me to where I am today and I didn’t go astray without a father, then God has a reason in my life. I attended Army Day nursery, primary and secondary schools. I then moved to the Nigeria Military School (NMS). I was in the military school for about two years, and I saw myself becoming somebody in the future that would hurt a lot of people with guns. So, I said to myself, this is not the kind of life I want to live. I left the military school, and I became a table-tennis player. I represented Nigeria at the All African Games in 1985. Yinka Majekodunmi, Funke Oshunaike, Biola Odunmosun, Bose Kaffour, Atanda Musa, Hakeem Hassan, Yomi Bankole, these are my people. At the age of 14, I was collecting my salary as a Sport Council employee. But still, as a table tennis champion that I was then, I still felt that this is not were God wants me to be, and I was so happy the day God revealed to me that it’s the microphone he wants me to carry. The microphone can speak what millions of people won’t be able to speak for themselves.

Your former partners, Eddy Montana and Tony Tetuila, how often do you guys see or hangout?

Eddy is fine, Tony is fine, we see often. Eddy is in Delta State. Working on a lot of other stuff and still doing music too. Together as Remedies, we have been recording an album ‘The Promised Nigeria’ that we will drop soon. Remedies will be back.
Many believe you have lost your relevance, how do these comments make you feel?

I don’t react; I just set it straight the way it is because I’ve gone through a lot. If the president could actually fight me and I’m still here and still standing, then whose opinion will now bring me down? I’ve been there, done that and you’re not going to get anything out of trying to bring me down. Most importantly, when it has to do with women that you try and blackmail me with, it’s not possible, because my marriage is already 14 years, and they said it was going to end in three months.

There’s a rumour that you have kidney problems, how true is that?

That’s totally untrue. If I have kidney problems will I be doing this (drinking and smoking)?

Your wife is hardly in the media, is it like a home rule for her to avoid the spotlight?

I thank God that I’m enjoying a blissful marriage. There’s simply no need for her to be out there in the media. I have managed to keep my family private. Remember many said we were not going to last, but here we are. We have two wonderful sons and Allah has been faithful to us.
