Since Messi had occupied Sergio's position (whilst attacking) Sergio was on the right where Messi would have been.

Kante sped passed Messi who thought it rash to close him down and give an easy foul because it was 3 V 3.

Watch the gif again. What gave kante that greenlight to run with the ball was busquets' defensive stupidity.
