Popular singer, Simisola Kosoko, better known as Simi, stated that contrary to speculations, she and rapper, Falz The Bahd Guy never dated, but had chemistry. The Duduke Ccrooner insisted that what they had was a working relationship, stressing that it was fans who spread the rumours that they were dating because of their sonic chemistry. The singer stated this while featuring in the interview segment of MTV Base Africa’s programme, Official Naija Top 10. She said, “He (Falz) did a verse on my song, ‘JAMB Question Remix’. And I was like, ‘Ah! Me and this guy, there is a vibe there.’ So, we did ‘Soldier’, and everybody was like, the chemistry is so amazing. “We never saw that. People bought what we were not selling. And we were like, okay, this is a strategy. So, we did ‘Chemistry’ the album. People gave us the name and the idea. Award-winning Nigerian singer, Simisola Kosoko, simply known as Simi, revealed that she used to be paid as low as N5,000-10,000 as performance fee when she was a gospel artiste. The ‘Duduke’ crooner said the highest she was ever paid then was N70,000. Simi who featured on an interview segment of MTV Base Africa’s programme, Official Naija Top 10. She said, “I actually used to go to a lot of churches to perform. They will pay me like N5k, N10k. Do you know the highest amount of money I actually collected when I was doing gospel [music]? N70,000. And I felt like I had arrived. I still paid a 10 per cent tithe from the money.” She said at some point she stopped singing because she wasn’t making enough money from gospel music to pay for studio sections and promotions. Simi said because of lack of finances, she got signed to a record label that she regretted signing for till today. The mother of one said she later switched to secular music because of the challenges she encountered in the gospel music industry. |

Sensational Nigerian singer-songwriter, Anthony Ebuka Victor, better known as Victony, has disclosed that he switched his music genre from hip-hop to afrobeats because he wanted to “try something new.” The 22-year-old stated this during an interview with Nelson CJ on Teen Vogue, covered by Africa’s New Wave. Victony said the pandemic quarantine gave him the opportunity to discover himself. He said, “The aura, the feeling during lockdown was very different, and that prompted me to want to try something new,” the ‘Soweto’ crooner recalled. “But when I got into the Afrobeat space, I realized that it was even harder because a key element of Afrobeat is relatability. [But you have to do that] and still make sense. You still have to be metaphoric, you still have to be creative with the writing,” he added. Victony said music helped him heal faster when he was in a wheelchair for about a year after a fatal car accident that claimed the life of one of his friends. He said the positive reception his collaboration with Mayorkun, ‘Holy Father’, got while he was still in a wheelchair, motivated him to finish up his project and follow up the success. He, however, said the guilt over not being able to remember how the accident happened still haunts him, adding that “I just feel like maybe things would have been different if I was awake.” |

A Heartfelt Letter About What it Really Really Means to Live Your Vision.. Becoming an Effective Broadcaster, Entrepreneurs/Mediapreneur wasn’t something that I stepped lightly into and decided one day. It’s been a long process. Anyone who has followed my journey has watched me evolve and incorporate more and more of what is meaningful to me into everything I do. For those of you that don’t know me, it’s my life mission to support, mentor, and motivate young artist and other entrepreneurs change the face of music history in Africa and beyond through innovation and leadership. It’s been an incredible process to align with what truly inspires me and to know that it’s the work I can also do in this world. I’ve also realized that what means the most to me is sharing the knowledge and experience I’ve gained with others- who have big dreams, so they can also go after the lives they truly want and create a lasting impact. I didn’t always know that this was what I wanted, though. In fact, for a long time, I thought success was just about hustling for cars, houses, more celebrity friends. These things are great, but there’s so much more. It all started May 30th, 2013. That was the day that i founded and I announced my recording studio... Synergy Records. It was a pretty big deal, and slated to be one of the most exciting days of my life. It felt a little bittersweet still, as I look back on years of bootstrapping and building something from the ground up. I found so much value in working my ass off on something I truly believed in, and I had to shut it down. It was the right decision, but there was still a sense of leaving behind a part of myself, and to top it off, I had no idea what was next. I knew there was something more for me. I couldn’t put my finger on it, and I’d been so absorbed in elevating Synergy Records as a platform and as my passion, that I hadn’t even had the opportunity to ask myself the question — what do I really really want to do? As God and The Universe would have it — I found the answer. It took leaving behind one chapter and stepping into the unknown to have the illumination it required to really see what my gifts & talents were, how I wanted to offer them, and what that might look like. As many of you know, I worked with Rivers State Television #Rstv and currently work as the host of the Drivetime Show #TheBigbeats on Familylove 97.7fm starting first as an intern and evolving as the host of the show...All THANKS to My Mentor/Big Brother Mr SEGUN FAWOLE aka FLOOD, for taking me under his wings and showing me everything I know today about Radio without holding anything back...I’ll talk more about Segun in a later piece because this post will never be enough to talk about how Wonderful and Generous he is to me to this day, just want you to know that he has the Biggest heart in this world and will forever remain my Big Brother in the industry. TR’s life shows us that hard work, tenacity, and a desire to do the right thing can get you far in life. Making the leap wasn’t easy. Choosing to be seen in the arena is no easy feat. Is it petrifying to show up and be seen? Yes, absolutely. A“The Man in the Arena” tells us that the man we should praise is the man who’s out there fighting the big battles, even if those battles end in defeat. In our day, when cynicism and aloof detachment are considered hip and cool, TR reminds us that glory and honor come to those “who spend themselves in a worthy cause.”If you’re going to fail, then at least dare greatly, and remember, it’s not the critic who counts. You grow, by putting yourself out there. If you’ve ever been in a situation that requires great courage, skill or tenacity, then, you know what it’s like to be “the man in the arena.” At first, it took everything I had to not be terrified, have fear of failure, and over-analyze how the hell I was going to pull this off — exactly the things I work with others to avoid, but like all great leaders, you have to live the process before you can teach it. Anytime you step into a bigger container for yourself, you receive the lessons you need to prepare to show up fully, with your game face on, and with your intentions right. It’s challenging for a reason — greatness doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process. And that process becomes the plan for your success. In honor of what is most important to me — being real, being authentic, and sharing my essence & experiences — I’m documenting this journey to show what it really means to become an effective broadcaster, mediapreneur, mentor and a coach to build something, to watch it grow, and all of the motivation that’s required along the way. Balance is Critical I often hear people say This Life No Balance At All....& it simply means, Life Ain’t Fair. So my friends, Be contented with what you have, no one has it all. Balance is critical to success in business, relationship and in life. Being off-balance for just a few moments can be exhilarating. Some instances that come to mind are when we first realize we’re falling in love; when we receive great praise from someone we admire or respect; or even when we enjoy a roller coaster ride like those at Disneyland. In those moments, little else can capture our attention. We are “in the moment.” Those are wonderful feelings that everyone should experience often in their lives. However, being off-balance for longer than those moments can create the opposite of those positive feelings. Being off balance can be dangerous to our relationships, to our physical beings, and to our careers. It’s no fun to give everything you’ve got to your career and gain material wealth, but sacrifice your health or the love and respect of your family along the way. No one sets goals to be wealthy and unhealthy, or successful and alone. We all strive for balance, but sometimes we fail to take that step back and figure out what a good definition of balance is for ourselves. That’s why I stress the importance of investing time each day, week & month to review your goals and be disciplined with your time. And it’s wise annually to invest at the very least a solid hour asking yourself qualifying questions about your life so you can make adjustments in your goals. How are you investing your time now? What do you enjoy most about how you invest your time? What would you choose to alter or change about your life? Is there someone else you feel you should consult before committing to changes? What solutions make the most sense if you do commit to changes? A well-lived life is a balancing act. If you’re out of balance, it will show in your demeanor. You’ll not handle personal or business situations as best you can, and that will have a negative effect on your bottom line as well as your enjoyment of life. Don’t risk it! Step back now, or at least within the next few days, to consider where your life may be out of balance. Then, set a goal to even things out — starting immediately! You will never regret the investment of time you make to improve yourself, your health, or your relationships! How to Focus on Yourself and Accomplish Your Goals in Life How often do you focus on yourself? If you want to accomplish your goals, it has to be constant. You have to put yourself first, even when it involves Saying no to others. At a high level, focusing on yourself is about paying attention: What do you truly want? What’s standing between you and your best, happiest, goal-conquering self? Focusing on Yourself Isn’t Selfish Just like everyone else on this planet, you deserve to get what you want out of life. That doesn’t mean you’re a selfish person; it simply means you’re the one who has to work for it. Say your goal in life is to be an amazing parent. To do that, you can’t take care of your kids 24/7. Although you’re going to have to clean up after them sometimes, you can’t support them without a stable career. You can’t teach them to manage their mental health if you don’t take care of your own. Before you can give others your best, you have to sort out your own priorities. And again, it has to be constant: Your goals might change, and that’s OK. What isn’t OK is focusing on others at the expense of yourself. How to Focus on Yourself And Get What You Want in Life Achieving your goals has to be a lifelong endeavor. That’s why it’s so important to start today. Use these strategies to go after your goals and get your life moving in the best direction possible. 1. Spell out Your Dreams The traditional vision of success appeals to a lot of people, but it may not be right for you. Ask yourself: What does the life I actually want look like? It’s up to you to create a vision for your life. You don’t need to know all the details, but you should be able to paint the broad strokes. There’s no “right” or “wrong” dream. All that matters is one thing: that you’re willing to work for it. 2. Practice Constantly Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Do the thing, and you will have the power.” That “thing” is whatever your goals require of you. One way or another, you have to put in the work. Writing skills don’t build themselves. Strong families aren’t forged by an absent parent. The good news is, you don’t have to do it all today. Break your goals into small, manageable pieces. Small steps add up. Take one or two each day, and you’ll make more progress toward your goals than you thought possible. 3. Face Your Triggers You’ve been told to avoid your triggers, but when it comes to focusing on yourself, that isn’t the best advice. How can you grow as a person if you run away from every trial? If you truly want to focus on yourself, you have to face your triggers. Remember, you grow most when you’re challenged. Focusing on yourself means putting yourself in tough situations. 4. Tap Into Your Sixth Sense Focusing on yourself isn’t a science. Finding your path requires you to get in touch with your intuition. When you’re intuitive, you can sniff out a bad relationship before getting too close. According to best-selling author Malcom Gladwell, you can evaluate people with about 70% accuracy[1] in a mere five minutes. How is that possible? Because past experience is powerful. Intuition is another word for using your experience to see beneath the surface of a situation. To focus on yourself, you have to trust yourself. With that said, intuition isn’t infallible. Don’t let it stop you from seeing what’s right in front of you. The bottom line? Be aware of your gut feelings, but don’t let them drive the car. 5. Switch It up Focusing on yourself isn’t the same as being single-minded. If you want to achieve your goals, you need new experiences to help you climb higher. Every so often, try something new. It doesn’t matter if you don’t want to do it again; what’s important is that you learned something about yourself. Experimentation helps you build skills and deepen your sense of self. Both of those things are critical if you want to reach your goals. 6. Put Your Health First What better way to focus on yourself than to prioritize your health? When you feel better, you’ll get more done than you would working yourself into the ground. You can get a long way by taking a “mother’s advice” approach to your health. That means: * Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep a night. * Exercise for 30 minutes at least three times per week. * Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. * Spend less time on social media. * Meditate for 10 minutes per day. * Avoid drugs and alcohol. * Take breaks often. * Ask for help when you need it. If you struggle with maintaining healthy habits like consistent exercise, then try to make it more fun. For example, I’ve started taking morning workouts and hitting the gym regularly. 7. Start a Side Project Side gigs allow you to call the shots. It’s a lot easier to focus on yourself and achieve your goals when you’re in it for yourself. Side projects teach you to love work again. The key is to choose projects that are aligned with your life goals. For instance: If you want to become a famous musician: Join a local band. Although it’s nice to earn some extra income via a side gig, that shouldn’t be your goal. If it is, look for a different job. The point of side projects is self-exploration. With that said, side gigs can help you further your main gig. Engaging in one shows potential employers that you’re willing to go the extra mile. Unlike many nine-to-fives, they let you build a portfolio of work that reflects your true interests. 8. Work Backward When you’re old and gray, what kind of life will you wish you’d lived? Taking an end-of-the-road perspective can help you see blind spots in your plans. Working backward is how you play devil’s advocate with yourself. Make sure your life goals don’t require you to make an unacceptable trade-off along the way. The Bottom Line What legacy would you like to leave? Are you willing to put in the work and accept the consequences? Here’s the Quote that changed my life and shifted my perspective on everything. On April 23, 1910, Theodore Roosevelt gave what would become one of the most widely quoted speeches of his career. Citizenship in a Republic (also known as “The Man in the Arena.”) The former president—who left office in 1909—had spent a year hunting in Central Africa before embarking on a tour of Northern Africa and Europe in 1910, attending events and giving speeches in places like Cairo, Berlin, Naples, and Oxford. He stopped in Paris on April 23, and, at 3 p.m. at the Sorbonne, before a crowd that included, “ministers in court dress, army and navy officers in full uniform, nine hundred students, and an audience of two thousand ticket holders,” Roosevelt delivered a speech called Citizenship in a Republic which, among some, would come to be known as “The Man in the Arena.” It’s about standing strong when tested. Choosing to be seen in the arena is no easy feat. Is it petrifying to show up and be seen? Yes, absolutely. The last few weeks for me have been amazing and wonderful in different ways, and also felt brave and at times a bit scary as I embarked on something new that immediately felt important and that felt risky. I was reminded of the idea of “to dare greatly”, and then that led me to some thoughts from the amazing Brené Brown, a leading researcher, writer and speaker on the power of vulnerability. Brown encourages a clarity of one’s own values and having a support person that is willing to pick them up and dust them off when they fail or make mistakes. Brown notes, “if one isn’t making mistakes, then one isn’t really showing up!” She explores why “not caring what people think” sends a huge red flag as human beings are “hard-wired for connection.” However, when a person becomes defined by what their critics think, they lose their willingness to be vulnerable. Criticism can stifle creativity and can anchor people from daring greatly and taking risks. I have to confess that right away, this resonated with me – and not because I thought of myself as the doer of deeds. Upon hearing that line for the first time, I realized that far too often, I am the critic. Today sharing some concise learnings from her from her book Daring Greatly and from President Theodore Roosevelt. She gives three lessons that she has learned and applied around “The Man in the Arena”, and to me the one that resonated most was this: “If you are not in the arena also getting your ass kicked, I’m not interested in your feedback” This resonated strongly for me on multiple levels When we dare greatly, we may often feel nervous, even scared as we take risks. We may reach out for feedback or advice, we may also likely be given unsolicited feedback and advice from, depending on where we are daring greatly, colleagues, friends, family. All too often those who are giving feedback and advice are “armchair warriors”, they are speaking from the sidelines, they are not “in the arena”. So, I love the liberating thought from Brené Brown, and if we do receive feedback or advice, I agree with her to focus on getting this from people who are or have been in the arena. Theory and qualifications are great, but have they been there, have they risked like you are risking? If they haven’t, they can only partly understand, they can only partly empathise. Always ask a teacher, coach, consultant, leader what experience they have “in the arena”. All well and good having consulting tools and methodology to help you with your leadership and business, same for doing an MBA or other academic training. However, I recommend you to aim higher. I haven’t watched this film in such a LONG time, I was surprised to see it on TV when I had the chance to see it a few months ago.. Not sure when, though. I think this is one of the great peptalks ever given. It illustrates that plain fact that it doesn’t matter how many points, wins or losses you accumulate, when all that really matters is that you give it your all. Winners are defined by the commitment they put into every second of the game. Below is a transcript of Coach Dale’s motivational pre-game speech to his students in the movie HOOSIERS... Coach Dale: There's a tradition in tournament play to not talk about the next step until you've climbed the one in front of you. I'm sure going to the State finals is beyond your wildest dreams, so let's just keep it right there. They say that a man or woman who is past 30 years old and hasn’t “made it” or gotten married has failed, but I don’t believe that at all. Society imposes these pressures on humanity and it is completely unnecessary. Money is good, it allows you to make contributions to things you believe in, and marriage is beautiful, don’t get it twisted. But Money and Marriage shouldn’t particularly be a yardstick for success. Even I don’t think I’ve made it. Making it is a life-long pursuit. I think everybody should stay in their own lane and run their individual race without comparing themselves to their peers. Every day I wake up, is a new day, a new day to learn a new skill and stretch, discover something new about yourself and do better. Develop new relationships with people outside of work and your network. Create more rapport, keep in touch and watch how certain aspects of your life will become rich and more fulfilling. Finally, Learn to promote yourself and enhance your public speaking skills. I strongly believe that the art of public speaking enhances your communication skills exponentially. Research has shown that a handshake is a character indicator, a firm handshake tends to indicate that someone has got resolve in their character, completes their tasks on time and is competent. I heard this on a recent podcast: the first hour of your day sets the tone for the rest, and the last hour of your day sets the tone for the next. Begin and end your days well. My maxim in life is to approach every day with a constructive attitude, meaning I look at every situation as an opportunity for growth or learning. Every day is an opportunity to be wiser or stronger than yesterday. I love early mornings, particularly when dawn is breaking.. I try to do three things every day: write, read and test my brain or body. In the morning or evening, I’ll put my thoughts and emotions (particularly strong or negative ones) on paper. I also practice some mindfulness or meditation, again either in the morning or evening depending on how busy my day is.. I concentrate my attention on a part of my body to stop my mind wandering and help develop focus. I believe the physical condition of my body affects my performance at work, so I try to get in some form of physical activity or if pressed for time it could be banging out 20 pull-ups or press-ups at home. I believe physicality equals mentality. My must-haves every morning are a large glass of water and listening to an inspirational podcast. The best advice I’d give to you my friends, is to look at your health, environment, and social circle and see if they need changing or at the very least adjusting. Lastly, even in an era of get rich quick schemes, get comfortable with zero. All businesses start from zero. You don’t make a profit right away or have a salary or customers to begin with.
