A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Barr. Soloabo West, has condemned the purported resolution of the National Caucus of the PDP to the effect that all sitting governors and members of the National Assembly on the platform of the party should be returned unopposed.

In a press statement at the weekend, West, who is the main aspirant challenging Governor Nyesom Wike for the PDP ticket in Rivers State, said the resolution diametrically precludes interested party members from vying for those positions.
“Such blanket endorsement of sitting governors and members of the National Assembly for whatever reason,” he said, “is patently undemocratic and completely shuts the door to internal party democracy.”
He disclosed that efforts by some members of the Riverine Communities in Rivers State resident in Abuja, who had volunteered to pay for both his expression of intent and nomination forms since Thursday last week have been rebuffed.
He said, “Officers at the National Secretariat bluntly refused to accept the bank draft that was issued in the name of the party, ostensibly, to prevent me from exercising my fundamental right to freely participate in the democratic processes leading to the 2019 general elections.
“Our representatives were later informed by another officer at a late hour on Friday to effect a Bank Transfer through a POS terminal payable to the PDP which was unusual, a worrisome deviation from what had been the practice and tradition of obtaining both interest and nomination forms through the payment of Bank Draft.
“I wish to state categorically that the PDP in shutting the door to democratic participation in the PDP governorship primary elections, has wilfully opened the door for me and my supporters to seek for other avenues to fully exercise our rights to participate, unhindered, in the processes leading to the 2019 general elections.”
Barr West said the action of the national office of the party had confirmed his fears that there was indeed an arrangement to deny candidates from the riverine parts of Rivers State the opportunity to participate in the governorship primaries.
West, whose campaign is founded on equity, has been fighting for the right of the people from the riverine communities to also become governor of Rivers State.
“From the foregoing, it is clear that there is a grand plan to bar any candidate from the Riverine Communities of the state from participating in the governorship primary of the PDP in furtherance of the 2019 gubernatorial election. This is unfair,” he lamented.
West however said he was not giving up on his governorship aspiration as yet. “Our options are open as we believe in the Almighty God who gives power to continue to guide our steps. For we are indeed fighting a just and equitable cause,” he said.

A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Mr. Soloabo West has said that the riverine communities of Rivers State have for too long been politically marginalised.
West, who spoke on a Wazobia FM pidgin English programme on Friday said that since the return of democracy in 1999, the upland part of Rivers State had been kept out of the governorship of the state.
He said 20 years is long enough period to sideline a sizable proportion of the population that have a stake in the state.
And he said the unfortunate thing is that those keeping power in the upland state were not even ready to discuss its rotation.
He said though he acknowledged the merit in the Ogoni struggle to also produce the next governor of Rivers State, the Ogoni claim is also tied to the upland hold to power which has denied the riverine areas a shot at the governorship.
He said the riverine areas were being treated like outcasts. “Small time we go run enter ocean , enter shark belle, say we no from Rivers State that we from waterside,” he said.
He likened the uneven power balance in the state to the posture of a man carrying a jerry can of water in one hand. “E go dey waka one kind, bend bend,” he said, stating that it is such an awkward sight.
However, West said power rotation was not the only reason why he was wrestling with Governor Nyesom Wike for the ticket of the PDP in the state.
He said he has the education and exposure needed to drive development in the state and is putting his services before the people of Rivers State to use.
He said if given the mandate, he will take healthcare to unreached communities where maternal and child mortality was rife.
West disclosed that he had come under immense pressures from people questioning his decision to take on the governor for the PDP ticket.
The aspirant, who is a lawyer, is running with equity as his slogan.

Soalabo West, a governorship aspirant under the aegis of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), has declared on a Nigeria Info 92.3fm radio program that his approach to governance will be different from the style of the incumbent Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike.
“My style of governance will surely be different from that of Governor Wike. I am a social democrat, therefore, I will be guided by the principles of equity, justice and fairness. All 23 local government areas will benefit from government projects.”
He lamented: “It is not proper to concentrate government projects in Port Harcourt, Obio-Akpor and Ikwerre local government areas. There are 23 local government areas in the state. Each local government is as important as any other local government.”
West, a lawyer, stressed: “To Inspire rapid industrialisation and create employment, each local government or old district headquarters will have an industrial park that will better harness it’s domestic potential. Locating industries in rural communities will checkmate urban migration and reduce crime and criminality.”
He stated that he was challenging Governor Wike for the governorship ticket of the PDP because for 20 years all successive governors in Rivers State have come from the upland area of the state.
“Former Governor Peter Odili from Ndoni served for eight years. Former Governors Celestine Omehia and Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi from Ikwerre jointly served for another eight years. Incumbent Governor Nyesom Wike, also from Ikwerre, has served for four years. In all, governors from the upland have collectively served for 20 unbroken years.”
West bemoaned: “Some people have asked me why don’t I wait until 2023 to pursue my governorship ambition. In 2023, the upland would have produced governors of the state for 24 successive years. I doubt if anyone born in 1999 will understand what the upland/riverine dichotomy means.”
He explained: “Yes, I am Soalabo West from Buguma in Asari-Toru local government area. It is because I am from Buguma in Asari-Toru local government area that I am an indigene of Rivers State. Therefore, I know how far governance is from the riverine communities in Rivers State.”
“Land mass is a pervasive problem in the riverine communities. The state government needs to engage in a massive dredging and land reclamation project in the riverine communities. The state government in partnership with the federal government needs to clean up our polluted waterways; Rivers; creeks; swamps; lakes and ponds.”
West emphasised: “After the clean up: government needs to put millions of fishes into the waterways; Rivers; creeks; swamps; lakes and ponds to develop a new colony of fishes so that fishing can become a profitable venture as it was about 30 years ago. We need a government that can turn around the economic fortunes of the people of the riverine communities.”
In another event where he launched his campaign website- www.soalabowest.org , Soalabo West further stated that: “I have been a member of the PDP for over 10 years. I am a loyal member of the party. The PDP supports the principle of rotation. I strongly believe that we should give someone from the riverine after 20 years of power residing in the upland to govern the state with a different style; ideals; model and methodology.”

…Says it is time for Riverine communities to produce a governor
Barely 24 hours after Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, declared that he will be running for a second term in office, in 2019, another aspirant, Soalabo West, has also announced his willingness to contest for governorship on the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP.

West, an energy and maritime lawyer of the Kalabari ethnic extraction, says his willingness to vie for the 2019 governorship election on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, “is anchored on a new paradigm to make Rivers State great again.”

He stated that the circumstances that threw up Wike in 2015 have been actualised with his emergence as governor in 2015 under the aegis of the PDP and it is now the turn of the riverine communities to produce the Governor in 2019.

“The prevailing argument then, was that Rivers was a PDP state and the people of the state needed to wrest the leadership of the state from the All Progressives Congress, APC, the party which the then incumbent governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi defected to in 2013.”

West recalled: “Governorship aspirants from the riverine ethic nationalities were asked to work with Wike, not because the Upland/Riverine dichotomy was not there, but essentially because of imperatives of the time.”

“One, that Rivers State should go to the PDP, and second, that the state should be properly mobilised to deliver majority votes to former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2019 presidential election.”

West emphasized that his governorship ambition is propelled by his desire to bring to the fore: vision; youthful vigour; and a pragmatic and dynamic approach to the development of the state devoid of political bickering and sectarian exclusiveness that is currently being institutionalized.”

He added: “My appeal to our youths and all stakeholders is to eschew violence and thuggery because according to former President Jonathan, nobody’s blood should be shed for anybody’s political ambition.”

A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party for the 2019 general elections, Mr. Soalabo West, has said that he is campaigning on the basis of equity.

In an interview with journalists in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Mr. West, a lawyer, publisher and businessman, said government has not been able to address the issues of development in Rivers State since its creation because the resources of the state have not been equitably spread to address the real development concerns of the state.

“If you try to infuse equity, fairness and justice into all your decision making processes you will very likely deliver the dividends of democracy to the people. You will very likely deliver abundant life to everybody,” he said.

West is the only other aspirant of the PDP outside the incumbent, Governor Nyesom Wike, that has publicly declared to contest 2019 governorship election in Rivers State.

Below are excerpts from the interview:

“My name is Soalabo West. I am a lawyer with competencies spanning environmental law, energy, natural resources. I am actually quite good at concluding transactions.

“I am the latest gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of the PDP come 2019.

What is driving you?

“People always ask me why, why why? I have been around this all my life and what we see today is worse than what we saw before. And I think it’s just been progressive; it’s like a constant downhill motion for all of us. And the only thing that can stop that downhill proclivity is qualitative leadership.

What do you mean by that?

By qualitative leadership, I mean the type that understands the tears of the women in the creeks, the tears of the women in their farms; the tears of fathers who can’t get work at Trans-Amadi anymore; the tears whose loved ones are dead and the tears and hopelessness of people who are unable to make anything out of their lives because they live in Rivers State. I think I have got the kind of qualitative leadership ideas that can get us out of that quagmire.

You have been talking about equity. How does it play out here?

Many people have also asked me that why I anchor your campaign on equity first. And I said I am basically a social democrat at heart and I believe strongly on the equity, fairness and justice. Not necessarily because I am a lawyer but because that is the way I think.

So for me, the only way I can rule Rivers State is on the basis of equity. I think if you try to infuse equity, fairness and justice into all your decision making processes you will very very likely deliver the dividends of democracy to the people. You will very likely deliver abundant life to everybody in your state.

For me the kind of equity is like this. In terms of expenditure in a state, you want to make sure that you spend Rivers money on Rivers people across the entire landmass of Rivers State. You want to make sure that taxpayers enjoy the benefits of their taxes.
