Career / Business Opportunities In Project Management by determino: 1:34pm On Jun 18, 2008
Hello everyone,

I lost my job last month due to some restructuring and some organisational politiking.Right now, I am under intense pressure to reduce my age so as to start up all over again but in a banking field. I am an engineer and I enjoy what I (use to) do. I have responsiblities for which I must provide for. More importantly I am good at what I do, and I am continuously developing myself in my chosen field.

My post-university education and work experience are majorly in facilities and project management. I hope to transfer the skills that I’ve acquired over the years to a job in that line. This however, is not to say I am looking out for jobs within that sector alone. Being a facilities/project manager has exposed and equip me with skills in Quality assurance, Vendor and contractor management, Preventive maintenance sheduling, Health, safety and environment (HSE) management.I am currently undertaking a programme in business management.

If you have questions or comments, please contact me by phone at 08032429963,07028652125, or by e-mail at determino@yahoo.com. I appreciate your time in considering my request.

Yours Sincerely,

Determino.

Jobs/Vacancies / Job Seeker, Know Thyself by determino: 12:05am On Jun 04, 2008
Job Seeker, Know Thyself

The ancient Greeks carved a nifty saying on the wall of Apollo’s temple at Delphi. It’s just two words long, but it could have a profound impact on your career and your life.
The two words are: “Know thyself.”
How well do you know yourself, especially when it comes to your job search?
Have you ever sat down and thought -- really thought, long and hard -- about the kind of work that would make you happy and support you for years to come?
If not, let me invite you to get to know yourself better today -- so you can get hired faster for the right job, starting tomorrow.
Here are two ways to do it …
1. Know Your Most-Marketable Skills
Any resume or cover letter you write must highlight your most-marketable skills in a way that makes employers want to meet you. To find those skills, answer these two questions:
a. What do you do well?
What do you do better and more easily than other people? Is it the work you’re doing now? Something you studied in school? A hobby? Write down your answers, no matter how unrelated they are to work. The goal is to get your creative juices flowing.
Let’s take a fictitious job seeker, Sally, and write down what she does well:
public speaking, sales, client service, managing projects, solving computer problems, managing people, speaking French
b. What do you enjoy doing?
What skills do you like using most? What would you do even if you weren’t paid? Write your answers down.
Here’s what Sally enjoys doing:
public speaking, bicycling, client service, solving computer problems, making sushi, managing people, speaking French, serving as a volunteer firefighter, hiking, writing, reading, travel
You’ll notice that several of her skills appeared in both lists. That’s what we’re after! These are Sally’s most-marketable skills -- things she does well AND enjoys doing. They are: public speaking, client service, solving computer problems, and speaking French.
Pretty simple, huh? By answering these two questions, Sally has found her most-marketable skills. Try it yourself. You may be surprised!
Next, after you know those skills, you should …
2. Know Your Target Job
Relax! This involves less thinking. All you have to do is pick two or three of your marketable skills, then search your favorite employment Web site.
Let’s say your three marketable skills are writing, training and managing. We’ll use Monster.com for this example and look for the “Job Search” box near the top of the page there.
I typed in the first two skills above: writing and training, and did not check on any category or location, because I wanted to generate the most results possible for jobs posted nationwide.
Among the openings I found were the following: Manager of Medical Writing, Training Coordinator, Full-time Tutor, and Communications Specialist.
That’s a wide range of jobs. When you do this exercise, it will generate a wide range of ideas for you, too, to help you brainstorm and choose your target job more easily.
When you search based on your marketable skills, you will quickly get a sense of how many openings are available and at what salary level. Example: there were 44 openings nationwide on Monster.com for the phrase baseball player, 130 for baseball marketing, and 1,976 openings for sports marketing.
So, expand your search terms and your thinking until you find target jobs that appeal to you. It’s that simple and that powerful -- this exercise will save you weeks of frustration looking for the wrong jobs.
And here’s the best part: Once you know your target job, wonderful things start to happen …
Remember when you bought your car and suddenly it seemed like every third person was driving the same vehicle as you? It had always been out there on the road, but now you saw it more, because you were more receptive to that particular style and color of car.
It’s the same with your job search.
Once you know exactly what kind of job you want, you will start to see job openings where you never saw them before. Ideas and employment leads will come to you, almost as if by magic.
It all starts when you know yourself. Try it and see!

Desperate To Leave Your Job? Avoid These Fatal Mistakes

If you are not satisfied with your current job, you may be tempted to quit right away. However, this may not be a smart career move - and you should leave your present job only after you find a new one. When you’re looking for a new job, don’t burn any bridges along the way, because it is imperative to still maintain a cordial relationship with your current employers.
Keep It Covert
Most people make the mistake of letting it be known that they are miserable in their current job. Doing this gives the boss a big red flag that you may be ready to jump ship and seek your fortune elsewhere. No matter how awful you may feel, do not let on that you have already ‘checked out’ mentally. Everything needs to go on as it always has. Don’t give your current employer a chance to fire you, or worse, give you a bad reference.
Even if you are really, truly unhappy, you need to keep your wits about you and remain calm so you can think. Do you really want your current employer to know you’re looking? Think about it.
Get Off That Phone – Especially If It’s Not Yours
When you really hate your current job, you’ll do whatever it takes to get out. Understandable. But let’s be smart in the deal. Do not use the office phone to call prospective employers or let them call you. You run the risk of a colleague overhearing your ‘business’ conversation – and before you know it, word is all over the office that Johnny is looking for a new job.
If you are looking for a new job, it’s your business, and no one else’s – keep it that way by using your cellphone (outside on your break) or waiting until you get home to make that phone call.
Interview On Your Own Time
The time will inevitably come when you’ll have to go on interviews. That said, it is not smart to take long lunches, extended breaks and lots of sick days in a row to attend job interviews. This is the surest way to attract unwanted attention. If you must, schedule a vacation day well in advance of the interview date – even better, try to schedule a few interviews on the same vacation day to kill two birds with one stone.
Looking for a job when you’re desperate to leave your current one isn’t easy. It takes patience and planning. Keep a cool head and you’ll land a great new job sooner than you think.
Jobs/Vacancies / Don't Feel Trapped In Your Job by determino: 4:43pm On May 30, 2008
Don't Feel Trapped in Your Job

THE PROBLEM
Only 54 percent of employees feel they have a good future with their current organization. Why do they feel this way?
• Some have doubts about the future of their organization. They fear that the company could go out of business, merge with another, or be acquired.
• More often they feel their performance is not valued.
Ironically, our research also shows that most of these fearful employees will stay with their organizations anyway and continue to live in fear and unhappiness. Here's why they stay:
1. They are scared to death at the prospect of trying to find another job.
2. Staying in a job where they don't feel valued has shattered their self-confidence.
3. They assume that there aren't any opportunities elsewhere
4. They fear losing their health benefits.
5. They can't envision themselves working somewhere else.
6. They don't want to leave the friends they've made
7. They're scared of change.
The result is that they feel stuck, trapped, and paralyzed.
HOW TO GET UNSTUCK
1. Move to the Tension
If you are feeling down about your current job, one sure way to make the situation worse is to do nothing. Do you really want to report to work every day feeling scared and unhappy? Be proactive. Start figuring out a way to change bosses, change jobs, or change organizations. You CAN do it!
2. Be Aware of the Concept of "Person-Situation Interaction"
Change can be very good. You may be working in a situation that no longer is right for you. Ever notice how when professional athletes switch teams they seem to get a new lease on life and their performance often improves dramatically? If you feel you are not performing up to your capabilities, the problem may be your current employment situation, not you. A change of venue can have a major positive effect on your performance.
3. Clarify Your Objectives One day Alice came to a fork in the road. She asked a Cheshire cat in a tree which way she should go. The cat asked, "Where do you want to end up?" She replied, "I don't know." He said, "then it really doesn't matter which road you take."
One of the many reasons that people become paralyzed at the thought of looking for a new job is that they don't have a clear goal. They are not sure what they really want to do next and so end up just spinning their wheels.
4. Become a Detective What do you do if you are unhappy at your present job but have no idea about what you want to do next? Put on a trench coat and pretend you're Columbo or stick a Tootsie Roll pop in your mouth and pretend you're Kojack. Start asking questions of everyone you know such as: "What do you do on your job?" "What do you like about your work?" "What do you do on a typical day?" What credentials or experience did you need to land this job?"
The more questions you ask, the closer you will come to clarifying your career goals and identifying what it is you want to do next.
5. Network Contrary to popular thought, looking for a job on the web or the Sunday paper are the least productive methods. You need to rejuvenate your network of past co-workers, friends and relatives. All of them are good potential resources to help you figure out what you want to do next, as well as where there might be opportunities. The odds are very good that your new job will come from a referral from someone you already know. [The lead for my first piece of business as a consultant came from my mother-in-law.]
6. Get Thee to a Career Counselor You may need some help. A session or two with a career counselor can help you figure out what you should do next and how you should get there. It will also provide you with both structure and motivation to help you move on with your life.

CONCLUSION
Life is short. There is no need for you to be unhappy in your current job. If you feel stuck, just make up your mind today that you're going to change your situation.

I have read this tread closely and i believe i understand how"Iku" feels.Really i think it just not worth it to hang on to a job that your spirit don't agree with.

Iku,
You complain at the slave like treatment you recieve from the white guy but truely its worse with Nigerians (i.e Nigerian bosses).About resign,i would say resign now don't wait till you are fired it is better. Some job actual prevent you from seeing better opportunity and some even reduces your visibility professional. For such jobs it is better to be without a job.

RESIGN NOW!!i was also in your situation and like you talk about my feelings and i got blacklist. i wanted to resign but i was talked into staying till i got a better.i tried hard but the better job didn't come. Eventually i was layed off over tump up charges. I don't regret leaving nor the fact that i now have a hole in my CV no! If you have made up your mind just do it and dont look back. I also explain to you that in every organisation there are organisational politicians and they could move a step ahead of you and get you before you know it (it happened to me ) so what you will do keep close to your chest and act more, talk less.

i wish you the best
