Denex the camel, Why do the northern muslims have to differentiate between people for the purpose of killing them in the first place? The students of the Yoruba teacher who was beheaded by her students in Gombe (northern Nigeria) a few months ago know her to be Yoruba. Southerners have lived long enough amongst these blood-thirsty bigots that they (northerners) know where they come from in southern Nigeria. Dont sound hollow again. |

Independence anniversary: Nigeria better than Congo, says Obasanjo From MOSHOOD ADEBAYO, Abeokuta Tuesday, October 2, 2007 Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday compared Nigeria with war-torn countries in Africa particularly the Democratic Republic of Congo, saying that the country has cause to celebrate at 47. While comparing Nigeria to Congo, Obasanjo whose eight-year presidency had generated mixed feelings from the citizenry, also commented on the progress the country had made in the last 47 years, saying that Nigerians had cause to praise God. "When I remember the situation that I saw in Congo 47 years ago and the situation that Nigeria was then; and the situation that Nigeria is today and the situation that the Democratic Republic of Congo still faces today, then we must thank God for His mercies." |

Are there any Hausas in the house who are not muslims. We need a northern (non-muslim) opinion on this matter. |

@Denex The first military coup severed the Igbo from the Fulani. Ok The second one (involving the killing of Ironsi) severed the Fulani from the Igbo. Ok If it be merely a Fulani-Igbo affair, why are southerners of non-Igbo extraction similarly killed in the North Where is your logic? |

I have a friend in The Gambia, a 90 % Islamic state. They do not go about killing Christians. I have a friend in Senegal, a 95 % Islamic state. They do not go about killing Christians. Even in Iraq, the 0.5 % Christians have not been reportedly always slaughtered like chicken. The Yoruba muslims, at almost 50 % of the population, do not go about looking for a fight with their Christian tribesmen In Niger Republic, just north of Islamic northern Nigeria, there are christians yet they are not attacked, maimed or killed at the slightest provocation. Yet, in northern Nigeria, muslims kill non-northerners on the one hand, and non-christians, on the other, even when the provocation (like the present case where an islamic adherent denigrated their Muhammed in Bangladesh) did not come from christians or within Nigeria. The problem of killing in northern Nigeria is multi-faceted, including but not limited to: High illiteracy and hence easy to be brain-washed into killing High level of poverty (northern Nigerians are amongst the poorest people in the world) which can influence your personal worth. Over-population with largely unproductive humans Mohammedan role-modelling (ie seeing the Jihadist prophet as a role model) Religious intolerance Tribal-motivated hatred Envy of the more successful southern neighbours who live in their midst Tacit support from the few elites who condone these evil acts Now, the question is why Yaradua should be more interested in instilling peace in the Niger Delta than doing same in the North. They let their brain-washed folks run amork and turn round to play peace-makers in the oil-producing communities in the SS and SE. That is precisely what Bush is doing too. He lets the Dafurians in Sudan be killed with impunity, and turns around to fight a war based on non-existent WMDs in Iraq. Crude Oil strong sha ![]() |

Niger Delta crisis triggers Owerri property boom While the rampant kidnappings, murders and gang wars have turned the core Niger delta states of Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa into a nightmare, it has triggered a boom in the property market of Owerri, the Imo State capital. Imo governor, Ikedi Ohakim, disclosed this in an interview, while stressing his government’s policy of tying into the economic developments in neighbouring states. Owerri is safe, and near enough to the oil fields. "The month we came into office, a flat in Owerri was going for a rent of N250,000 per annum. Now it is going for over one million naira. We are cleaning up Owerri, and workers in oil companies in Port Harcourt are bringing their families to live here," the governor said. But besides the sprucing up of Owerri, the major attraction that has triggered the property upswing within four months is relative security. Ohakim attributes that to his partnership with the Federal Government in checking the spread of militancy. " Look at security. All those boys that were running away from Port Harcourt, they wanted to cross over to Imo. You know what happened to them? Have you heard of any disturbance in Imo? Has anybody been hijacked in Imo? Do you know Imo would have been the next target where they would go and hit? Do you know what we have done in conjunction with the Federal Government to make sure that that thing does not expand?," he asked rhetorically. Apart from benefiting from the near-anarchy of the core delta states, Ohakim says he is working on a tourism masterplan that will reap from all the south-east and south-south states. In the lead is the Wonderlake project, a water-based tourism development with a N70 billion budget, with a capacity to employ 20,000 people over the next three years. He banks on the location of the state, which is equidistant from all the major cities of the south-south and south-east. These cities will yield the flow of tourists. The state is also seeking partnerships with the private sector, for the industrial development of the state. "We are talking with some investors to come and set up in the state. We have the largest deposit of gas in West Africa, and we are oil-producing", the governor says. On the perennial problem of petroleum product availability and pricing, he said that he had fought petroleum profiteers, deploying a taskforce with police and military membership to check the activities of dealers. Those found to be profiteering have had the certificates of occupancy of both their stations and homes revoked. His philosophy is that they are saboteurs, and he would run them out of town rather than have them grind the state to a halt. Fuel allocations to Imo State are also tracked by the taskforce to check product diversion. Those who hoard products, now have their premises locked up indefinitely, he added. http://businessdayonline.com/National/319.html |

Integrity Group, in the House of Representatives, at the weekend threatened to pick the next speaker from the South eastern part of the country if leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South West insist that Mrs Patricia Etteh remains the Speaker. One of the arrowheads of the group, Hon Halims Agoda, decried the position of the PDP leaders from the South West that they would not present any other lawmaker as speaker despite the indictment of Etteh by a panel to probe her involvement in the award of contracts to renovate her official residence. He said: “I am amazed at the position of the South-West leadership, particularly the group of governors, party leaders and indeed, some traditional rulers that Etteh is the only candidate they have for the position in spite of this glaring indictment by the probe panel set up by Etteh, herself. “It is almost insulting to the other parts of the country for the South-West leadership to maintain that Etteh is merely being persecuted. “If the South-West leadership, in spite of this damning panel report, insists that Etteh is still their only candidate, some of us, on the floor of the House, will ensure that we produce the next Speaker from the South-East zone of the country because, to us, morally, Etteh can no longer preside as speaker of that House.” http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/newsonthehour/2007/oct/01/newsbreak-01-10-2007-001.htm |

A new deadly killing has taken place in Kano. Yet Yaradua is more interested in securing the oil in the Niger Delta instead of securing the killers in Kano. What's your opinion? |

CAN decries religious mayhem in Kano From Saxone Akhaine, Kaduna FOLLOWING the alleged killing of some Christians in Judun Dankande Local Council of Kano State at the weekend, the General Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Mr. Samuel Salifu, has called on President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to intervene urgently. According to Salifu, who urged the government to bring the perpetrators to book to forestall further violence, Christians would no longer condone any attack on them. The CAN scribe spoke with journalists in Kaduna at the weekend, pointing out that reports reaching him from Kano State indicated that there was trouble in Tudun Dankande local council. According to him, nine persons, including a youth corps member have reportedly been killed over an Internet cartoon said to have emanated from a 20-year-old Moslem boy from Bangladesh. Salifu noted further: "Information available to me is that almost all the churches within that local council area have been razed and shops belonging to Christians have been razed and in houses where they dwelled in, we have been told that they have been ejected and their property brought out and burnt. "The information given was that they saw a cartoon on the Internet and they still discover that this cartoon was drawn by a 20-year-old Moslem boy from Bangladesh and they decided to visit their anger on innocent Christians and their churches. He remarked that Christians and the leadership were getting extremely worried because both the Christians and Moslems leaders have been holding series of meeting within and outside the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) to see how to bring about peaceful co-existence between followers of the two religions." The CAN Spokesman wondered: "I don't know, if they don't have control over these people, then this NIREC meeting is going to look to me like a very useless meeting because we will meet, they will go and kill, we will meet, they will go and kill, then they turn round and say they are not proper Moslems. How is it that they cannot take care of their own people? We have hoodlums among the Christians too, but we don't allow them to go and kill any body. So this issue of hoodlums are not limited to Kano or anywhere. "We are pleading with the government to step in. I am directly telling President Yar'Adua because this may be a litmus test for his administration. " So far, both Christians and Moslems in the country seem to appreciate what he is doing. But if he keeps quiet and talks about rule of law and doesn't try quickly to intervene in what is happening, then he will now begin to see that there is a different law running in this country because the Christians will not just continue to watch while people just slaughter them as they like , "They cannot control their anger, they take knives and slaughter. When you tell them what they are doing is wrong, they will turn round and start to kill. Very soon, there would be a lot of blood shed unless they stop this nonsense because the church is getting fed up." According to him, he had tried to contact some Moslem leaders on the issue: "I tried to call the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (SCIA), Lateef Adegbite, he too was surprised that he was just hearing it. I called one of the anchor Moslems in Kano, Prof. Yadudu, but he was out of the country." "I tried to call the governor of Kano State, but he too is out of the country. Most of the time, these people are out when these things are happening. So it cannot be a coincidence again. It looks like a plan, which they are orchestrating. Once they plan that something is going to happen, they just disappear and then tomorrow they will say we should come and talk in NIREC. This is why many Christians are questioning the relevance of NIREC in the midst of all these atrocities". http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/news/article08 |

@Denex, Obasanjo is not THE founding father of TI. He is A founding father, amongst other founding fathers. When and why was TI founded? TI was established in 1993 by a group of people who shared the vision of TI's founding chairman Peter Eigen. With backgrounds in inter-governmental and business environments, they shared in common the experience of having witnessed first hand the devastating effects of cross-border corruption. It was this desire to fight global corruption that prompted the launch of the fledgling non-governmental organisation, Transparency International, in May 1993. The convening conference brought together an array of international figures, including the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former President of Costa Rica Oscar Arias Sanchez, the former Foreign Minister of Mauritania Ahmedou Ould Abdallah, the former Foreign Minister of Bolivia Robert MacLean Abaroa, and Olusegun Obasanjo, then of the African Leadership Forum, now President of Nigeria.Together with Peter Eigen, the founding members were Hansjörg Elshorst, Joe Githongo, Fritz Heimann, Michael Hershman, Kamal Hossain, Dolores L. Español, George Moody Stewart, Jerry Parfitt, Jeremy Pope and Frank Vogl. When TI was established, it was still legal in most countries to make bribe payments abroad. It was this situation that the founders of TI wanted to change. For more information see TI history. |

Abia Oil Windfall OBJ took, Yar’Adua returns –Gov Orji The governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji, has lauded President Umar Yar’ Adua over the recent restoration of 46 oil wells in the state. He also described the President as a listening leader. Orji, who credited the restoration to the hard-fighting regime of his predecessor, Chief Orji Uzo Kalu, carpeted former President Olusegun Obasanjo over the role his administration played on the controversial oil wells. It will be recalled that the state was denied control of the oil wells by the Obasanjo administration, despite the long-drawn protest of the Kalu administration. Said Governor Orji:“It was a long battle. When we came on board we got fighting. Fortunately, unlike what we experienced in the last eight years under Obasanjo, we now have a president that listens, a president that is fair. That is why we had those oil wells. “It means a lot to Abia State, because the money that comes from there will now be given to the state and will be used to develop the state. You know the Niger Delta Development Commission has one of their representatives here right now. When Obasanjo was president, it didn’t come to us. It only came to us during the administration of Yar’Adua.” The governor, in this interview, also highlighted his achievements in the last 100 days and assured Abians of his administration’s readiness to bring the needed development to the state. He also spoke on why his party, Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), agreed to join the government of national unity proposed by President Yar’ Adua and his relationship with his predecessor. Excerpts: You recently marked your first 100 days in office. Looking back now, what have been your challenges? There have been many challenges. First of all, is having to contend with opponents. Secondly, there were many areas in the state that needed to be developed. That does not mean that the last administration did not try its best. It worked, but there is the challenge of continuing from where it stopped. It was reported recently that some oil wells have been restored to Abia State. Considering the fact that this was denied the state by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, would you say this is a coincidence or a deliberate attempt? Yes, 46 oil wells have been given back to Abia State. And this is the result of the efforts of the immediate past administration led by Chief Orji Uzo Kalu. It was a long battle. When we came on board we got fighting. Fortunately, unlike what we experienced in the last eight years under Obasanjo, we now have a president that listens, a president that is fair. That is why we had those oil wells. It means a lot to Abia State, because the money that comes from there will now be given to the state and will be used to develop the state. You know the Niger Delta Development Commission has one of their representatives here right now. When Obasanjo was president, it didn’t come to us. It only came to us during the administration of Yar’Adua. So, as far as I’m concerned, it’s President Umar Yar’Adua that gave it to us. There was also an allegation by your predecessor that part of the allocations were being unduly cut… (Cuts in) Yes, I agree with you because they were taking everything personal with the former governor. Because of that, they refused to give us what was due to us. We fought for these oil wells to be restored. We talked about it, shouted about it, during the regime of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Nothing happened. But right now, under the administration of President Yar’Adua, we just asked and he gave it to us. So, it is Yar’Adua that we recognise that has given it to us. |

Abia Wants Return Of 52 Oil Wells The minister of state for energy (petroleum), H. Odein Ajumogobia, SAN, has commended the Abia State government on the newly built Mega Filling Station and other developmental projects undertaken to improve the quality life of its people. Ajumogobia made this commendation when the Abia State governor, Chief Theodore Ahamaefule Orji, accompanied by Senator Uche Chukwumerije paid him a courtesy visit in his office at NNPC Towers last Thursday. The minister assured the governor that the federal government is willing and ready to support the state government in its efforts to develop physical infrastructures that will impact positively on the life of people of the state. To this end, Ajumogobia stated that he would be pleased to honour the invitation by the Abia State governement to officially commission the almost completed Mega Filling Station Also, the minister of state for energy (petroleum) said that the current administration emphasises the rule of law as a fundamental policy in governance, and assured Orji that the National Boundary Commission will resolve outstanding issues involving Abia State. Earlier, the governor observed that Abia State being one of the oil producing / bearing states should feature prominently in the focus of attention by the minister and the ministry. Chief Orji also thanked the minister for the oil wells earlier ceded to neighbouring state but has now been returned to Abia State. However, he added that some 51 to 52 oil wells are still being held by Rivers State due to the boundary adjustment conducted under the leadership of Justice Mamman Nasir. He implored the minister to use his good offices to assist Abia State in reclaiming what is truly within the boundary of Abia State. http://www.leadershipnigeria.com/product_info.php?products_id=13884&osCsid=da5775fe8e51921f61eff85806c071a6 |

CRUEL DEATH • 18-year-old nursing mother dies of first degree burns after woman from hell set her ablaze By FEMI FOLARANMI, Yenagoa Tuesday, September 25, 2007 Nursere Victor before her death Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section An 18-year-old nursing mother, Nursere Victor, recently had a sad end when an angry woman bathed her with petrol and set her ablaze. She died of first degree burns. Daily Sun investigations revealed that the deceased, an indigene of Agobiri, in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, had a six-month-old baby for a middle-aged man in the community. They were, however, not married. On the day of the incident, the man was said to have seen Victor talking with a sales boy in a shop in the community and got jealous. Suspecting that the duo could be having an affair, he allegedly reported the sales boy to his madam, identified as Roseline Tari. The woman allegedly, thereafter, accused the boy of stealing her money and lavishing it on his woman friend. The woman was said to have targeted the deceased and emptied a keg of fuel on her. Thereafter, she set the victim ablaze, probably, for being the beneficiary of the crime she accused her sales boy of. Eyewitness account said the frantic cries of help from Victor attracted sympathizers, who rushed her to Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa. It was gathered that although she made the 45 minutes journey to the hospital, nurses on duty demanded for a police report before she could be attended to. By the time the police report came, her condition had worsened, which made medical officials at FMC, Yenagoa to refer her to University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, where she was kept at the intensive care unit. She however, died on September 6. Sources stated that when the suspect got wind of what happened to Victor, she attempted to flee but the villagers arrested her and later handed her over to men of the State Criminal Investigations Department.
