Politics / I Am NIGERIA; Pls Rebrand Me! by DKNYtruth(m): 7:42pm On Jul 16, 2009
Hmmn!

I am Nigeria.
I have millions of acres of arable land and billions of cubic litres of water, but I cannot feed myself. So I spend $1 billion to import rice and another $2 billion to import milk. I produce rice, but don't eat it. I have 60 million cattle but no milk.
I am hungry, please re-brand me.

I drive the latest cars in the world but have no roads. I lose family and friends everyday on roads for which funds have been looted. I lose my young, my old, and my most brainy and productive people to the potholes, craters and crevasses they travel on everyday.
I am in permanent mourning, please re-brand me.

My school has no teacher and my classroom has no roof. I take lecture notes through the window and live with 15 others in a single room. All my professors have gone abroad, and the rest are awaiting visas. I am a university graduate, but I am illiterate.
I want a future, please re-brand me.

Malaria, typhoid and many other preventable diseases send me to hospitals which have no doctors, no medicines and no power. So my wife gives birth with candle light and surgery is performed by quacks. All the nurses have gone abroad and the rest are waiting to go also. I have the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world and future generations are dying before me.
I am hopeless, hapless and helpless, please re-brand me.

I wanted change so I stood all day long to cast my vote. But even before I could vote, the results had been announced. When I dared to speak out, silence was enthroned by bullets. My rulers are my oppressors, and my policemen are my terrors. I am ruled by men in mufti, but I am not a democracy.
I have no verve, no vote, no voice, please re-brand me.

I have 50 million youths with no jobs, no present and no future, but can apply a little computer knowledge obtained in yahoozing. So my sons in the North have become street urchins and his brothers in the South have become militants, My nephews die of thirst in the Sahara and his cousins drown in the waters of the Mediterranean . My daughters walk the streets of Lagos , Abuja and Port Harcourt , while her sisters parade the streets of Rome and Amsterdam .
I am inconsolable, please re-brand me.

My people cannot sleep at night and cannot relax by day. They cannot use ATM machines, nor use cheques. My children sleep through staccato of AK 47s see through the mist of tear gas. The leaders have looted everything on the ground and below. They walk the land with haughty strides and fly the skies with private jets. They have stolen the future of generations yet unborn and have money they cannot spend in
several lifetimes, but their brothers die of hunger.
I want justice, please re-brand me.

I can produce anything, but import everything. So my toothpick is made in China; my toothpaste is made in South Africa; my salt is made in Ghana; my butter is made in Ireland; my milk is made in Holland; my shoe is made in Italy; my vegetable oil is made in Malaysia; my biscuit is made in Indonesia; my chocolate is made in Turkey and my table water made in France.
My taste is far-flung and foreign, please re-brand me.

My people are cancerous from the greed of their friends who bleach palm oil with chemicals; my children died because they drank 'My Pikin' with NAFDAC numbers; my poor die because kerosene explodes in their faces; my land is dead because all the trees have been cut down; flood kills my people yearly because the drainages are clogged; my fishes are dead because the oil companies dump waste in my rivers; my communities are vanishing into the huge yawns of gully erosion, and nothing is being done.
My livelihood is in jeopardy, and I am in the uttermost depths of despondence, please re-brand me.

I have genuine leather but choose to eat it. So I spend a billion dollars to import fake leather. I have four refineries, but prefer to import fuel, so I waste more billions to import petrol. I have no security in my country, but would rather send troops to keep the peace in another man's land. I have 160 dams, but can not get water to drink, so I buy 'pure' water that roils my innards. I have a million children waiting to enter universities, but my ivory dungeons can only take a tenth. I have no power, but choose to flare gas, so my people have learnt to see in the dark and stare at the glare of naked
flares.
I have no direction, please re-brand me.

My people pray to God every morning and every night, but commit every crime known to man because re-branded identities will never alter the tunes of inbred rhythms. Just as the drums of heritage heralds the frenzied jingles, remember - the Nigerian soul can only be Nigerian - fighting free from the cold embrace of a government that has no spring, no sense, no shame. So we watch the possessed, frenzied dance, drenched in silent tears as freedom is locked up in democracy's empty cellars.
I need guidance, please re-brand me.

But then, why can I not simply be me, without being re-branded? Or does my complexion cloud the color of my character? Does my location limit the lengths of my liberty? Does the spirit of my conviction shackle my soul? Does my mien maim the mine of my mind? And is this life worth re-branding?
I am not yet born, please re-brand me.

Religion / I'm A Born Again Christian, Says Eucharia Anunobi by DKNYtruth(m): 8:20pm On May 11, 2009
Arguably one of the nation's most prominent actresses, Eucharia Anunobi has been enmeshed in controversy and weathered storms, escaping almost unscratched.

Loved by many, and especially respected for her dexterity with the English diction, this English language graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has moved to the fore of the acting profession.

"Going to school does not necessarily make you speak well, though I read English in the university. To acquire my diction, I practice vigorously and this has helped me grow more and perfect my pronunciations.

"While growing up, I went through the dictionary a lot and I still create time to do that. I also learnt how to do pronunciations while watching TV, and I listen attentively to people who speak very well. I do a lot of self-training because I believe that if you want to be good like someone, then you have to learn to be like them.

"I imitate those people that speak very well whenever I see them talking. For me, I would say what has also helped me is self training, and I still engage in such activities because life is more about improving yourself," the beautiful actress enthused about her diction.

Unknown to many, the mother of one boy, who claims that her ex-hubby abandoned her, started out as a fashion and photography model, while at the University of Nigeria.

"I had always wanted to be an actress right from the start, but I actually started out as a model when I was at the university, and this is because at the time, my acting talent hadn't grown as I would have preferred, and I prayed and practiced hard while modeling.

"My acting career began when I heard about the production of Living in Bondage and though I was quite young at the time, the National Youth Service programme further prepared me for the opportunity that came my way, when I went for an audition and got a role from Christian Michaels in a flick that was not eventually produced. But I met Kanayo O. Kanayo on the set and he felt impressed with my potentials.

"After a while, when a character was needed to play the leading role in Nneka, the Pretty Serpent, Kanayo remembered me and told them to look for me, and that was how it all started," UK, as Eucharia is fondly called, recounted.

Though Glamour Girls II gave her the big break in Nollywood, UK, maintains that she is not what she portrayed in the movie, for which she is often stereotyped.

"I have been born again for several years now, and it wasn't like somebody converted me. I just decided to get closer to God and that was it. People just mistook me for someone else because of what they see me do on TV or in movies.

"The job of an artiste is to play different characters, when I play the role of a prostitute in a movie, we are showing and showcasing to the world that prostitution isn't good and doesn't end well for those engaged in it.

"However, the fact that I am born again will not stop me from acting or stop me from taking a particular role because it's my job and what I am paid to do. But aside that, I educate and entertain people while promoting good values. I'm not what many think I am because I will not play irresponsible roles as a child of God.

"I'm one of the most wonderful human beings that God created. I know this, and have been told this severally, because I am an intellectual, very humane, love to love, love to forgive, feel for people and have empathy for those around me. Whatever I do, I do it very well and so, I believe I am a perfectionist.

"As a practicing child of God, I am very tolerant, though I don't take nonsense from anyone. I detest lies and those that understand me well will definitely move on well with me," Eucharia said.

Without doubts, she became one of the most sought after actresses after her brilliant performance in the Glamour Girls II, and with popularity came good pay and enhanced status. How has she been coping with all these and many more?

"After Glamour Girls II, my rating and fee skyrocketed and I have continually thanked God for that particular film, although I have featured in several other flicks since then. God has been good to me.

"I pray it gets better here in Nigeria as regards the money, but for me, I don't see any sense in getting away from those who love me, because they are the ones that made me by approving my talents. I am a realist and despite the fact that the accolade could be suffocating at times, I always manage to draw the line.

"The truth is, I couldn't have been the person I am without the fans. It's wonderful and I so much feel honoured anytime they request something from me", she said.

It is believed that Eucharia is one of the richest Nigerian actresses living big. What does she have to say about this?

"I am very rich in the Lord. The Lord has been so wonderful to me, blessing me with so much intellect, wisdom and talent. Material things aren't something you lay claims to. One can have several cars and they can get burnt in just one day although we don't pray for that. I can't even say this is how much I have in my bank account, but one thing is sure, because I am a child of God, who is born again, I believe I am wealthy, because God said when you have Him, you have everything in the world. I am so rich in the Lord."

For a woman, who was so fond of her ex-hubby and was known to have been so committed to the marriage while it was intact, how has she been able to cope with the shock of separation from he man who left her and her son?

"Well, I believe it's all because we were not meant for each other, and I have to be there for my son. What used to be the responsibility of two adults has now turned into that of just one. We were so close when the going was good, he loved me and I loved him too. I was never too far from him and my son, except when I was on location.

"I shared seven years of my life with him. We were in the UK for many months before we returned and he loved me as much as I loved him. I have moved on and I am living my life to the fullest with thanks to God Almighty, who has been with me all through," Eucharia concluded.

Politics / Re: Governor Bukola Saraki Vs Governor Raji Fashola Who Wins? by DKNYtruth(m): 8:24pm On May 08, 2009
CAN SOMEON PLEASE TELL BUKOLA (OMO DADDY) THAT KWARA STATE PAYS HIS BILL AND THOSE OF HIS HOUSEHOLD PLEASE!!! AND PROBABLY WAKE UP FROM LOCAL CHAMPION/AGBOOLE POLITICS!

The Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Raliat Elelu-Habeeb, has dragged the Kwara State Government to the Federal High Court in Ilorin, challenging the power of the state's House of Assembly and the state government to initiate disciplinary action against her.

In a suit filed by her lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the Kwara CJ said that only the National Judicial Council had the power to initiate disciplinary proceedings against her in respect of her duty as the CJ of the state.

The CJ had joined the NJC, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the state Assembly and the state AG as co-respondents to the suit.

She, therefore, asked for an order of injunction restraining the state House of Assembly and the Attorney-General of the state from relying on a letter inviting her to come and show why disciplinary action should not be taken against her by the state Assembly.

She also asked the court to restrain the state government from interfering with her job as the CJ of the state.

In an affidavit she deposed to, Elelu-Habeeb said that all the allegations contained in a letter written by Governor Bukola Saraki to the state Assembly related to the exercise of her duties and powers as a judicial officer.

She added that neither the House nor the governor had the power to inquire into such allegations.

The CJ further claimed that neither the governor nor the Assembly copied her with the letter which she alleged, was widely published in newspapers.

She said, "I know as a fact that unless the state Assembly and the Attorney-General of the state (3rd and 4th defendants) are restrained by an injunctive order, the leadership of the judiciary of Kwara State, being the third arm of government, will be adversely affected."

She argued that neither damages nor monetary compensation could adequately pay for physiological trauma, inconveniences that any adverse action or decision that the defendants might take as related the letter initiating disciplinary action against her.

Other reliefs being sought by the CJ include and a declaration that by the combined interpretation of sections 4,153,292 and paragraphs 20,21 of the third schedule to the 1999 Constitution, it was only the NJC that had the exclusive power and authority to inquire into any complaint against her.

The CJ also prayed the court to grant the following prayers.

A declaration that the letter of the state Assembly is in breach and violation of the 1999 Constitution in so far as it relates to the exercise of her functions as the CJ of the State.

An order setting aside the decision of the state Assembly and the state Attorney-General and any other steps taken thereon in so far as it relates to her office as the state's Chief Judge.
No date has been fixed for the case."

Politics / A Few Good 'man', Babatunde Raji Fashola, Governor Of Lagos State -Gbenga Badejo by DKNYtruth(m): 8:10pm On May 07, 2009

[li] "Never thought I would ever have to write a full article about a Nigerian politician. A very positive review for that matter. This was not for lack of optimism on my part, but for the lack of vision and purpose on their part. The reality is that a good Nigerian politician is difficult to come by. The vast majority of the politicians elected into government are self-serving, corrupt and worse of all visionless. They are corrupt nationally, regionally and locally. They are corrupt in the South and in the North, in the East and in the West.

The Governors in the North marry multiple wives, in the South-West; they publicly stick with one wife but go through young mistresses faster than mach 2. The Ibo Governors ingratiate themselves with royalty; the Yoruba ones think they are royalty, the South-South Governors lobby to become Knights, the Hausa Governors have too much time on their hands and Yar'Adua, the President, gives his daughters to two of them as third and fourth wives respectively.

Worse still, the legislators are clueless. Their main pre-occupation is junketing abroad on endless fact-finding missions. Yet they are concerned with how they are perceived at home and at the ready to threaten with arrest anyone that challenges their plain-to-see indolence and hopelessness.

Nigerian politicians are ego driven; they will commandeer an honorary doctorate degree from Universities to which they are the 'Visitor' and get their friends and families to congratulate them with full page newspaper advertisements. Annoyingly, they assault our intelligence and overwhelm reason with false eulogies in these congratulatory advertisements, many of which often share the same message. They celebrate 47th, 56th and other meaningless birthdays; they collect meaningless titles from any monarch. The Nigerian politician gives the impression that theirs is a gadabout government, purposeless yet whirling in self congratulation.

After the era of visionary and selfless leaders like Awolowo, Azikiwe and Ahmadu Bello, we are lumbered with the misfortune of having so-called usurpers who think they are doing us a favour by carrying out what they are elected to do. So State Governors have their ugly photos plastered over the covers of notebooks distributed to school children majority of whom have to contend with window-less, teacher-less schools. Some of the politicians also erect massive billboards with their photos and political slogans beside every road repaired and every well sunk. On being sworn to office, the vast majority of them took to corruption and the euphoria of office like a pig to filth. They stink to high heavens and they carry a lot of innocent blood on their hands and head.

Refreshingly, Babatunde Fashola, the Lagos State Governor is a departure from this filth. He is a breath of fresh air compared to anyone who has held any executive position in Nigeria in over 40 years. He is so different that you can hardly believe he is one of us. He is genuinely and determinedly interested in changing the lives of his constituents for good. Like many other Lagosians, I have developed an air of breathless excitement as I watch Fashola transform the hitherto impossible city.

The recently introduced commuter bus systems have made travelling affordable and easier for a good number of people. Major road works are being carried out, drainage systems are being rebuilt. If you go on Mobolaji Bank Anthony in Ikeja or Akin Adesola in Victoria Island at night, you may think you are in London. Many roads in the Lagos metropolis now light up at night powered by solar energy. Fashola must have realised that the environment affects people's behaviour, and has therefore engaged in a massive drive to beautify the city, left, right and centre. Lagos roads are now being swept almost round the clock.

The Lagos State Signage Agency has seen to it that posters and overhead fliers that hitherto deface Lagos roads are now a thing of the past.

Wherever you go in Lagos, you can see the government of Babatunde Fashola at work without seeing his face. He is rebranding Lagos State without making any noise about it. He just lets his work speak for him. Unlike many Nigerian politicians, he is not involved in any populist, short-term projects; he appears to be planning ahead for the next 100 years. Fashola genuinely has the interest of the people at heart.

Do not get me wrong, if you are visiting Lagos for the first time or have lived abroad for a considerably long period, you may not notice much. However, having lived in Lagos for over a year now, the transformation is truly astounding. Fashola has proven that good governance is possible. He is also governing from a position of service. Never has he once made Lagosians believe he is doing them a favour. Fashola has class.

He is also very wise. He shows deference to traditional and religious leaders, but he does not collect titles from them. He collected an award from a newsmagazine as one of the best performing governors in 2008 but returned it when he realised it was a Greek gift.

Fashola is also a cultured person who is not carried away by power. He is one of only three Governors in Nigeria who still carry the title of 'Mr'. In an interview he gave a few months after he became Governor, He said he does not use the signature siren favoured by politicians and the 'powerful people' because he is averse to noise but also because he considers it in bad taste to live in a government house, drive government vehicles and terrorise the same people that pay for the luxury he enjoys.

Some people will argue that he can only do what he is doing because his predecessor and mentor Bola Tinubu helps to take care of the political side of things. My response is whilst this may be true; Fashola cannot do what he is doing if he does not have it in him.

I will like to share a story that in my view sums up the effort of Babatunde Fashola and showcases the new Lagos that he is trying to build. A man had been lying for consecutive days at the same spot on the central reservation of the road that leads to our Estate. I decided to stop and on enquiring from a nearby shop-keeper, I was informed that the man had been drunk and was hit by an Okada (motorbike).

On Friday 17th April, I placed a call to the Lagos State emergency telephone number '767' to request for assistance for the man. This was my first time of using this service which is in itself a first in Nigeria. I was amazed when I got connected and I was afforded the utmost courtesy by the person who answered the phone. When we got disconnected shortly afterwards, I tried again, and yet another person answered on the first ring. She listened to my report asking for the full details of where the man was located and promised that an ambulance will be sent forthwith. I was joyful not only for the man, but that something this good was possible in Lagos and in Nigeria. Without any deliberate prompting, my heart blessed Fashola.

A few days later, I noticed that the man was no longer there. My wife later informed me that she saw an ambulance parked at the same spot to ferry the man away for treatment as she drove past one evening.

Of course Fashola is not doing more than what he was elected to do, however, when the vast majority of our politicians care less about the electorate, Fashola should earn our admiration for differentiating himself so fantastically.

I have watched Fashola on the sidelines for over a year and I know he is no fluke. He has surreptitiously dragged us, Lagosians, to develop confidence in him and increasingly in government. I have come across many people who have chosen to pay their tax because they believe that Fashola will use it responsibly. This agrees very well with the proponents of the theory that Nigeria's problem is a leadership one.

Fashola has proven that you only need a few good people to change the course of a nation; in his case, a few good 'MAN'. Lagosians know that what is happening in Lagos is due to the determination of a single man and they truly appreciate this man and have come to trust him. Fashola is a leader, a responsible man, a genuinely good person. He is a few good 'MAN'. And we all can learn from him.

We all benefit when we do things right!"

EVERYONE DOES SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT IT'S COUNTRY AND PEOPLE; BUT THESE GUYS PUT UP A STORYLINE THAT DEPICTS ILL OF THE INDIANS, PAID SOME OF THEM TO ACT, AND AT THE END POURED SENSELESS AWARDS ON IT TO GIVE IT THE MOST WELCOME PARTY IT DESERVES TO PAINT "AN IMAGE"; AM VERY SURE, SOME OF OUR ACTORS AND ACTRESSESS WOULD HAVE DONE THE SAME FOR THE LITTLE CASH IT PAID; IT'S QUITE UNFORTUNATE.

THIS MOVIE WAS WRITTEN, PRODUCED, DIRECTED BY THE BRITISH - THAT SAYS IT ALL, IT'S UNFORTUNATE THOUGH,

Nairaland / General / Protest Embezzlement And Go To Jail: Just Like That? by DKNYtruth(m): 8:12pm On May 01, 2009
The 27 soldiers who allegedly protested the non-payment of their allowances after undertaking a peacekeeping assignment in a foreign land will be bemoaning their fate, no doubt. The soldiers were sentenced to life imprisonment for daring to open their mouths in protest against some of their superior officers who they said were trying to pocket their hard-earned money. The soldiers were consequently charged with mutiny and have now been sentenced.

THE army, of course, has its own codes of conduct. One of these apparently, at least from the judgment of the Court Martial, is that the actions of officers, especially those that deny individuals of their rights, should never be questioned. Even in cases of brazen violation of their rights, junior officers should keep silent or give such an action a roaring “Yes Sir!”

THE jailed soldiers have learnt their lessons. They were wrong for daring to raise their voices against their bosses. Many of them may not know about the game of Chess. There are Pawns which must be sacrificed to protect the corrupt opulence of the King. The junior officers, it appears, either did not know their place or thought they were still in a foreign country keeping the peace.
LEADERS do not keep the peace here in Nigeria, especially when the issue is about money. They war. These soldiers must have heard about how many of the leaders had killed themselves over money. If they have not, they should ask some of their superiors whose authorities they challenged the reason they planned coups d’etat.

NIGERIAN leaders, especially its military rulers, have consistently waged brutal wars on the nation’s treasury for many years now and Nigerians have not fought back. But these soldiers have the effrontery to protest a few miserable dollars. Now some Nigerians would blame them for daring to be different. They will say these soldiers are definitely not Nigerians, otherwise, they would not have challenged the authority instead of praying. Because in their country, Nigerians do not protest against the injustices of their rulers, they go to churches and mosques to pray for the redemption of these rulers to make them stop looting the treasury.
Business / Ridiculous: Nigeria Ranks Third In World's Online Crime! by DKNYtruth(m): 7:50pm On May 01, 2009
Country Manager of Microsoft Nigeria, Emmanuel Onyeje, said in Abuja on Thursday that Nigeria ranks third on the list of the world's top 10 online crimes spots.

He said in addition to the prevalence of cyber crime, software piracy rate in Nigeria currently stands at 82 per cent.

Quoting a 2007 Internet Crime Report, Onyeje stated that with the prevalence of cyber crime among a sizeable number of Nigerian youth, there is an urgent need for concern.

The Microsoft manager made these observations at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organisations.

He lamented that internet scams, identity theft, financial scams and software piracy undermine Nigeria's economic development.

He also stated that such acts further reduce the country's ability to attract foreign investments.

Onyeje explained that signing the MoU would strengthen the efforts to combat internet crime and software piracy in Nigeria.

According to him, the MoU signed by Microsoft and the EFCC builds on an earlier one of 2005 that focused on increased cooperation, capacity building and enforcement in the area of internet safety.

Onyeje said the two bodies have also agreed to combine efforts to develop programmes that would educate the public on cyber crime and software piracy while identifying, investigating and prosecuting suspected defaulters.

Also speaking, Chairman of the EFCC, Farida Waziri, disclosed that the initial MoU with Microsoft which expired in 2008 resulted in several arrests and convictions of internet fraudsters in Nigeria.

Nnamdi is the proprietor of a Fufu and Isi-Ewu Shop (Exotic Nigerian
food) in Lagos, Nigeria.

Sales are low and, in order to increase them, he comes up with a plan
to allow his customers to eat now and pay later. He keeps track of the
meals consumed on a ledger.

Word gets around and as a result increasing numbers of customers flock
to Nnamdi’s shop. His suppliers are delighted and are very willing to
sell more and more raw materials for the meals he prepares. Nnamdi
shows them his ledger of receivables and they extend him credit.

A young and dynamic customer service consultant at the local Nairaland
bank recognizes these customer debts as valuable future assets and
gives Nnamdi a credit line and then increases Nnamdi’s borrowing limit.

Taking advantage of his customers' freedom from immediate payment
constraints, Nnamdi jacks up the prices of his Fufu and Isi-Ewu.

Customers don?t mind as they are not required to pay on the spot. Sales
volume increases massively; Banks and suppliers lend more; Nnamdi opens
more outlets in Abuja, Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Ibadan. He sees no
reason for undue concern since he has the debts of the customers as
collateral.

At the bank's corporate headquarters, expert bankers recognize Nnamdi's
customer loans as assets and transform these customer assets into
Bonds. These negotiable instruments are given exotic names such as
FoofooBond, IsiBond, EwuBond AND EgusiBond.

These securities are then listed on the Stock Exchange and traded on
markets worldwide. No one really understands what the names mean and
how the securities are guaranteed but, nevertheless, as their prices
continuously climb, the securities become top-selling items.

One day, although the prices are still climbing, a credit risk manager
of the Nairaland bank decides that the time has come to demand payment
of one of the debts incurred by Nnamdi. Nnamdi in turn asks his clients
to pay up. One by one they refuse; the clients cannot pay back the
debts. Nnamdi refuses to serve them anymore. The clients stop coming.

Nnamdi is really screwed now. He cannot fulfill his loan obligations
and therefore claims bankruptcy. All bonds drop in price by between 80
to 95%.

The suppliers of Nnamdi, having granted generous payment due dates and
having invested in the securities are faced with similar problems. The
goat-meat supplier defaults on payment to the Mallam who sells goats to
him and to the cattle supplier and claims bankruptcy. The yam supplier
is taken over by a competitor; Nnamdi lays off the cook and staff.
Bankruptcies soar, unemployment mushrooms.

The Nairaland bank that lent the money in the first place is set to
collapse. It is saved by the Government following dramatic
round-the-clock consultations by leaders from the Peoples Undemocratic
Party with Nnamdi commuting back and forth in his Executive jet and
Mercedes 500SEL, brokering the deal.

The funds required to save the economic collapse are obtained by a tax
levied on the citizens, most of whom do not eat Fufu or Isi-Ewu.

Nairaland / General / Fg Inaugurates National Postal Code: Step Towards A Right Direction? by DKNYtruth(m): 7:14pm On Apr 28, 2009
The Federal Government yesterday formally launched a new national Postal Code otherwise known as ZIP Code. It also decided to put up a committee and appoint consultants who will fashion out modalities for a new national addressing system in the country.

Speaking in Lagos at a 2-day workshop on National Addressing System in Nigeria with the theme: “Addressing as a Strategic Infrastructure for National Development”, Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili , stated that the move is designed to put Nigeria in line with other countries of the world and also ensure that its addressing system is standardised. She also directed the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) to liven up its official website to adequately represent the nation’s postal system.

“Now Nigeria has the Zip Code and today is also the day that we have all collectively come together to start working on our addressing system; in this way we are going to ensure that names are not replicated in the cities and we don’t use names we are not supposed to use in addressing streets and facilities in the country.

"What we are doing is part of other interventions that we plan in repositioning NIPOST. NIPOST will come up again to be one of the vibrant institutions in this country because we all know that the British telecoms is one of the highest employers of labour in the UK. We want NIPOST to also become one of the employers of labour in Nigeria and believe that we are on course,” she said.

The minister also said that the launch of the post code, which is part of the numerous interventions at repositioning Nigeria and NIPOST, will further ‘address our inadequate and confusing Nigerian addressing system. She advised Nigerians to approach their nearest post office to collect their respective Zip Codes.

“You can go to the nearest post office where you live or your office to find out your postal code so that when next you travel, you will not be telling people when they need your address that Nigeria does not have postal code,” Akunyili said.

She said the Federal Government will work together with states and local governments to actualise the project as it involves having a holistic map of all residence and offices in Nigeria, noting that it is a huge job and capital intensive as well.

Although Nigeria had a similar postal code system in place between 2000 and 2001, which are described by the Minister as ‘skeletal’, the new platform offers full Zip Code for the country.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed , said that the concept of re-branding the country required positive re-orientation of values of the people and entails a rediscovery of ‘our national identity.’

When fully put in place, the proposed addressing system will, among other things, enhance the performance of security operatives, facilitate national planning activities, help NIPOST and other related agencies to deliver effective and efficient services, bring the necessary reform to street naming, enhance tax collection and help businesses to realise their full potential.

Cool your jets man! Helmets will not cause anything 'endemic'. People already sit in crowded buses coughing, sneezing and wiping their hands all over the seats and vehicles from day to day all over Nigeria without anything endemic happening. If you haven't been infected by all these by now, why will helmets cause so much ruckus?

The only things I think can spread are head lice and lapalapa (ringworm)  cheesy grin grin

K, GOOD LUCK THEN,

Politics / Housemaid Petitions Bankole Over Alleged Assault By Lawmaker by DKNYtruth(m): 7:59pm On Apr 27, 2009
A housemaid, Lydia Elisha, has petitioned the Speaker, House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, over alleged torture and humiliation meted out to her by the Nigeria Police personnel on the orders of a member of the House, Henry Shawulu (PDP-Taraba).

In a three-page petition written through her counsel, Tom Metu of Peace Chambers, Abuja, and made available to newsmen in Abuja on Sunday, Elisha said Shawulu accused her of stealing N40,000 in his house at EFAB Estate, Abuja, and ordered the police to manhandle her.

According to the petition, Elisha claimed that the lawmaker took her initially to EFAB Estate police station where she was detained between April 5 to April 9, 2009 before transferring her to Life Camp police station, where she was almost tortured to death.

Narrating her ordeal in the hands of the Divisional Crime Officer, Lydia said, "I was handcuffed, tortured and taken to a hidden corner outside the Police building in a container where I was asked to agree that I stole the money."

Elisha said that her refusal to agree to the police request earned her more torture and humiliation as her boss directed and watched her being dehumanised.

"The Investigation Police Officer (IPO) implored me to agree that I stole the money to avoid further punishment. I refused. He therefore poured tear gas powder on me after soaking my body with water. My body, breast and private part was severely burnt that I was unable to sit down with buttocks for days," she said.

The housemaid said a lawyer, Teslim Agboola, who came to assist in securing her release on bail was equally assaulted by the police officers as they threatened to beat him up.

"I want to state categorically that I never stole any money from Hon. Henry Shawulu's home. I decided I would no longer tolerate the abuses, curses and insults from Shawulu's wife and children," she said.

Elisha, a 22-year-old girl from Kanke in Plateau State was engaged by Shawulu on November 14, 2008 as housemaid on N12,000 monthly salary before it was recently increased to N15,000 due to her diligence and hardwork.

The girl, through her counsel, had threatened to sue the lawmaker and claimed damages for the brutality, humiliation and violation of her fundamental human rights by Shawulu.

The maid, who is still receiving treatment at a private clinic due to severe burns and injuries she sustained, said she still have her mobile telephone, purse and a pair of shoes in the custody of Life Camp police station.

When contacted on telephone, Shawulu, who represents Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency of Taraba State claimed ignorance of the matter but later asked; "Where did you get that story?"

"I am not aware of what you are saying. Who are your witnesses? You have no evidence to proof what you are saying?" he said in a telephone interview with our correspondent.

Insisting further on getting his own side of the story, he consistently said he was not aware of the incident but asked for the sources of the story.

Both the Lady Divisional Crime officer at Life Camp Police Station and the IPO in charge of the case have confirmed the incident but denied the alleged tortured.

An eye witness, simply called Olatubosun, narrated how the girl was allegedly brutalised on the orders of Shawulu, who personally supervised the torture.

Olatubosun told our correspondent that all pleas by him and other sympathisers at the police station fell into the lawmaker's deaf ears as he insisted that he would force her to pay the alleged stolen N40, 000.

The witness said he heard the lawmaker saying Lydia was very hard working and was the only maid who stayed beyond a month with his wife, but would make sure she coughed out the money to the police.
Nairaland / General / Truck Drivers Block Expressway As Police Arrest Hemp Smokers: This Is Insane! by DKNYtruth(m): 7:04pm On Apr 24, 2009
The recalcitrant posture of the fuel truck drivers at the old Toll Gate, Ogere Section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway came to the fore again on Thursday as they blocked the highway protesting the arrest of 12 residents of the community by the state Police Command.

The 12 members, according to the Command's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, were arrested after the men of the command caught them smoking substances suspected to be cannabis.
The highway became a theatre of confusion as the truck drivers, most of whom did not know the reason for the confusion, blocked the prime expressway with their idle trucks, making passage in the area impossible till the evening.

Adejobi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, told our correspondent that the drastic action of the truck drivers, which had become a recurring decimal in the volatile area, would not deter the command from handing over the suspects to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for prosecution.

The police spokesman said, "The 12 men were caught smoking marijuana and we simply arrested them and we are handing them over to the NDLEA for prosecution.
"That place is not for smoking Indian hemp and we cannot fold our hands and watch them do what they like.

"That's why they said they were protesting the arrest of the men by blocking the expressway with their vehicles but we are not moved."
One of the people caught in the traffic gridlock in the area was Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, who was returning from Ekiti State to attend the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Medical Association in Abeokuta.

Mamora described the situation as chaotic, saying motorists had to task their brains to find alternative but long routes out of the zone.
"It was terrible. I was coming from Ekiti State and was trying to catch up with the beginning of the conference but when we got to somewhere in Ogere, it was impossible. We had to find ways through somewhere in Ijebu area before linking this way again," he said.

The Managing Director, Gateway Trailer Park Limited, Mr. Leke Adesanya, who confirmed the incident, however, said the drivers had started withdrawing their trucks from the main road around 5.00pm on Thursday (yesterday).

"The Area Commander in Sagamu had been here and they spoke together and they started withdrawing their vehicles from the road after the blockage," said Adesanya, who promised to furnish our correspondent with the details of the situation.

I paid my tax at First Bank, Surulere branch, using self assessment form last July. I did not receive my receipt until last week when I sent a text message to Governor Babatunde Fashola.

When I saw his reply about an hour latter, I showed it to my wife who doubted that the governor could reply me personally.

She thought that perhaps one of his aides sent the reply, until an hour later when I started receiving calls from different people - from the head of Alpha Beta, to the secretary, Internal Revenue, who all promised that my receipt would be sent as soon as possible.

My tax card and receipt were sent to me two days after my text to the governor.

For the first time in the history of Nigeria, we have a listening governor that anybody can communicate with. It's unbelievable. I commend the governor.

So, if you have a problem and you do not text the governor, don't blame anybody.

Nairaland / General / Man Commits Suicide Inside Church: What Was He Thinking - Injustice/frustration? by DKNYtruth(m): 8:17pm On Apr 21, 2009
"Men of the Lagos State Police Command have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of one Kayode Adebayo inside a church in Lagos.

The corpse of Adebayo, said to be in his mid-30s, was found dangling from a rope inside the auditorium of The Light Gospel Liberty Ministry, Oguntade Street, Abeokuta Expressway, Oko Oba, a suburb of Lagos on Monday.

Eyewitnesses said that residents of the area were attracted to the scene in the early hours of the day by the loud barking of dogs.

A source close to the church told our correspondent that the deceased, who had been a member of the church for about five months, was recently arrested by policemen for allegedly knocking down a pedestrian.

He was said to have been detained at the Yaba Police Station and later released on bail and was expected to appear in court on the day his corpse was discovered.

The source quoted the deceased's widow as saying that she had on Saturday foiled his attempt to swallow some pills with petrol.

The last time Adebayo was seen alive was on Sunday evening when he reportedly escorted a friend who came to visit him.

It was on his way back home after bidding the friend farewell that he allegedly went into the church hall.

His mission in the church did not attract any suspicion apparently because he was a member.

He reportedly used an electric cable to hang himself.

Residents of the area who converged on the church to catch a glimpse of his remains wondered why the deceased decided to kill himself inside a church.

One of them said, "No matter what the problem one may be passing through, the belief is that the church should be a place of hope.

"I wonder why he could not pray since he has chosen to come to the church. Why did he decide to desecrate this hallowed ground?"

His corpse has since been deposited at a mortuary for autopsy.

The command's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, was not available for comment when our correspondent visited his office."

WITH ALL SAID AND DONE; I BELIEVE INDIVIDUAL LIVES SHOULD BE THE DOOR TO DOOR EVANGELISM AT THIS CRUCIAL MOMENT IN LIFE; IF YOU CAN LIVE THE LIFE WHY GO DOOR TO DOOR TALKLESS OF HAVING A CONGREGATION BECAUSE YOU WERE PRIVILEGED TO ATTEND BIBLE SCHOOL! THE MAIN THING CHRIST HAMMERED WAS "LET YOUR LIFE SO SHINE BEFORE MEN, THAT THEY MIGHT SEE YOUR GOOD WORKS AND THEREBY GLORIFY MY FATHER IN HEAVEN", GONE ARE THE DAYS WHEN YOU GET EMPLOYED BECAUSE YOU'RE A XTAIN; IF YOU TRY TO DO THAT NOW, YOU'RE GONE, FOREVER, AND EVER!

I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS IN HIGHER INSTITUTION, A GUY CAME TO A PLACE ITH 'TRACTS' TO PREACH TO FELLOW STUDENTS; HE EVENTUALLY HANDED DROPPED THOSE TRACTS ON THE FLOOR FOR THOSE GIRLS BECAUSE THEY WERE PUTTING ON JEANS PANTS WHICH IS AGAINST HIS CHURCH'S BELIEF, I WAS SO ANNOYED EVEN THOUGH I WAS BROUGHT UP IN CHURCH, BECAUSE IT'S THE HEIGHT OF HYPOCRISY THAT I COULD EVER IMAGINE, FULL OF DECEIT, and so many worst more I grew up witnessing, WE'RE BUNCH OF HYPOCRITES IN NIGERIA FROM THE TOP TO THE LEAST, just few are left out,
