Premarital screening is one of the most important strategies for prevention of genetic disorders, congenital anomalies, several medical, psychosocial, marital problems.
It can provide an opportunity to intervene according to the identified risk.
These interventions include;
--vaccination
--counselling regarding behaviour [including those related to HIV and other infections].
--nutrition
--genetic counselling
--advice regarding contraception
--modification of chronic disease
--treatment of infections and medication to decrease teratogenic risk.
What are the screening tests in males; What are the screening tests in females;

Blood group and rhesus factor. Blood group and rhesus factor
Blood genotype Blood genotype
Random blood sugar Random blood sugar
HIV HIV
Syphilis Syphilis
Hepatitis B screening Hepatitis B screening
Urinalysis Urinalysis
Semen analysis Pelvic ultrasound scan
The blood genotype and blood group tests are pretty common and well known.
The rhesus factor determines whether Rh positive or Rh negative.
Rh negative usually results in problems in pregnancy and extra care must be taken of the foetus.
The introduction of rhogam injection makes the problem solvable.
Random blood sugar[RBS],urinalysis are all linked to diabetes .
Diabetes plays a pivotal role in the sex drive of the partners.A male with diabetes usually suffers from sexual disorders such as premature ejaculation or erectile dysfunction and a female with diabetes when pregnant is a high risk--- fetus with macrosomia and it attending problems like hypoglycaemia and shoulder dystocia.

Health / The Relevance Of Prostate Specific Antigen Test? by DoctorRuby: 2:40pm On Nov 22, 2018
Prostate specific antigen [PSA]is a protein produced by normal as well as malignant cells of the prostate gland in men .The blood level of PSA is often elevated in men with prostate cancer ,prostatitis[inflammation of the prostate] and benign prostatic hyperplasia[BPH] hence the use of digital rectal examination[DRE] in addition to PSA testing to help doctors determine the nature of the problem.
There is no specific normal or abnormal level of PSA in the blood and levels may vary overtime in the same man.
Earlier a PSA level of 4.0ng/ml and lower was considered normal but recent studies have shown that some men with PSA levels below 4.0ng/ml have prostate cancer and that many men with higher levels do not have prostate cancer.
PSA level rises in
.Prostatitis
.UTI[Urinary tract infection]
.Prostate biopsies and prostate surgery.
.BPH[Benign prostatic hyperplasia]
The higher a man’s PSA level, the more likely it is that he has prostate cancer, a continuous rise in a man’s PSA level overtime may also be a sign of prostate cancer.
Why do l need PSA test?
You may get a PSA test if you have certain risk factors for prostate cancer which includes
.A father or brother with prostate cancer.
.Being African-American.
Your age : Prostate cancer is more common in men over the age of 50
.Symptoms such as painful or frequent urination ,and pelvic and/ or back pain
.Confirmed diagnosis of prostate cancer to monitor the effects of treatment.
Preparation for PSA test;
.Avoid having sex or masturbating for 24hrs before your PSA test as releasing semen can raise your PSA levels.
.Avoid invasive surgica l procedures ,bouginage ,urethral catheterisation and manipulative procedures.
.Avoid bicycling or riding a bike before test
.Avoid statins[lipid –lowering drugs],finasteride[for BPH]
.Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen.

Health / Why Do Women Get Vaginal Itches Just Before Their Period? by DoctorRuby: 7:43pm On Jul 06, 2018
This is the recurring question bothering women’s minds every time a period is about coming.
There are lot of hormonal changes happening in a female cycle just before having a period every month.
The oestrogen level drops considerably just after ovulation and then the progesterone level rises giving the vagina a low ph and reducing the immunity allowing the growth of lots of yeast infections/candida albicans resulting in the vaginal itches/creamy vaginal discharge most women experience just before the period.
However when the period starts the flow of blood increases the PH which makes it higher and so the switch from no vagina itch once a period starts.
Not treating the vagina itches might result in more serious problems after the period has ended.
Lots of antifungal vaginal creams, vaginal pessaries /tablets and oral antifungal drugs are available at the pharmacies for use.

Health / How Popular Is Surrogacy In Nigeria? by DoctorRuby: 12:02am On Jun 16, 2018
Hi,

Surrogacy is one of the options of getting a fertile female within the reproductive age group stipulated by the IVF clinic to carry pregnancy to term through the invitrofertilisation/intracytoplasmic sperm injection procedure using either donor eggs/commissioning mother’s eggs plus the commissioning father’s sperm/donor sperm.

Contrary to popular belief/superstitious belief surrogacy is quite common in Nigeria as it affords the high and mighty and the average /middle class the opportunity of having child/children of their own even in most hopeless cases. Several cases of surrogate mother advertising their availability /suitability have been found on social media pages.

The option of providing the surrogate or the surrogate been provided by the IVF clinic concerned lies on the commissioning parents.
Several reputable surrogacy agencies abound in Nigeria.

It is not however advisable for the commissioning parents/mother to manage the surrogate mother alone. To help take over the burden /risks associated with the commissioning parents/mother managing the surrogate mother is the surrogate liaison officers---affordable and professionals in the field.
