Politics / DSS: We Have Invited Asari-dokubo Over Inflammatory Statements by drsolob2(m): 7:30am On Feb 06, 2015
Contrary to insinuations in some
quarters that the Department of State
Services (DSS) has not deemed it fit to
invite the leader of the Niger Delta
Volunteers Force (NDVF), Mujahid Asari-
Dokubo, over the inflammatory
comments he made recently, the service
said on Thursday it had invited ex-
militant leaders several times.
The spokesperson of the DSS, Marilyn
Ogar, disclosed this while responding to
a question at a news conference
organised by the National Information
Centre.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN), Oga said: “First of all, whatever is
the operational procedures that we take
after we have issued out warnings, we do
not make them public.
“And I want you to recollect that Asari-
Dokubo has been brought into the office
– DSS, a couple of times.
“It is not in the position of the office to
begin to tell you who has been brought
in or who has not been brought in.
“We still stand by our words that
whoever in any way would want to
interfere or interrupt the peace that
prevails, he or she would definitely be
dealt with,’’ Ogar said.

Politics / American Man Sends Over $100,000 To Wife In Nigeria He’s Never Met. by drsolob2(m): 7:21am On Feb 06, 2015
A 53-year-old man who has sent over $100,000 to a
woman he has never met in Nigeria insists he is only
providing financial assistance until she inherits $25.6
million from her dead parents.
Steve appeared on the talk show, Dr. Phil, to discuss
his unusual relationship with 'Kelly' whom he met on
an online dating website in 2012.
He says the pair are legally married in Nigeria, even
though he has never met her and they usually only
communicate online.
Steve says he has been giving her the money for the
last few years to help her until she receives her
inheritance from her parents - she claims they were
killed in an Ohio car crash in 2012.
Steve sells his plasma - a yellowish liquid that has to
be separated from blood - twice a week to ensure he
can make payments to 'Kelly' who lives with 'James,'
her 'attorney.'
I've sent Kelly about $103,000 in the last 29 months,'
he said on the show as a flabbergasted audience
listened.
'I've not met Kelly, but it doesn't matter. I love her just
the same.
'She has an inheritance coming, and I've always
wanted to be a millionaire, so it's like a match made in
heaven.'
'I just love her. She is very beautiful and warm, kind,
caring and loving.'
Steve says he has not met 'Kelly' as she needs to stay
in Nigeria to help with signing the inheritance forms.
He said that 'Kelly' came back to the US he tried to
meet her, but it didn't work out.
But when Dr. Phil's team analysed an email she sent
Steve claiming she was in South Dakota, the IP address
revealed it was sent from Nigeria.
'Kelly' told Steve she went to a nursing school in North
Dakota, but when the show contacted the school they
said no one with her name had ever been enrolled.
But 'Kelly' is not the only person Steve is sending
money to - he says he is an accountant, and insists he
is on the verge of becoming a multi-millionaire from
several pending inheritance deals with overseas
clients.
He says he is sending them money to cover their legal
fees as they fight to obtain their inheritances.
But he is now on probation for cashing a fraudulent
cheque that was sent to him from Africa - he was asked
to cash it to help a 'client whose life was in danger' and
then asked to send $5,000 to five people listed.
However the bank picked up on it and he was arrested.
Steve's sister, Tammy, says she is worried, as he has
been scammed in the past.
She is asking him to cut ties with 'Kelly' - and his other
so-called clients.
'My brother is delusional,' Tammy says.
''Kelly' could be a Nigerian man behind a computer.'

When the fourth Mechanized Brigade was relocated from Benin city to Ilorin (?) their barracks at Ikpoba Hill in the outskirts of the city which was vacated reverted back to the state government.
Now, the question everyone should ask PDP Edo state is what their grouse is with the state government disposing of the land as they deem fit? Do they want the place to remain fallow? As long as it is a fair and open disposal, and PDP members are not prevented from participating in the process, it is alright by me.
And that same land which is about 32,000 ha of land does not only contain the army barrack alone but the headquater of NABTEB,immigration office, prison civil defence and road safety office is him going to vacate does agency from the land.and we where told that he is selling the land to dangote.

Politics / PDP Alleges Edo Govt Plan To Sell Army Barracks by drsolob2(m): 6:59am On Jan 29, 2015
BENIN—The Peoples Democratic Party,
PDP, in Edo State has raised alarm over
what it described as the alleged plot by
the state government to sell the Nigerian
Army Barracks in Ikpoba Hill, Benin City,
due to alleged lack of funds for capital
development.
State Chairman of the party, Chief Dan
Orbih, also described the approval of the
27.5 percent allowance for teachers and
other actions of Governor Adams
Oshiomhole as panic measures to
deceive eligible voters in the state to cast
their votes for All Progressives Congress,
APC, in next month’s elections.
He said: “As I talk to you, the state
government is planning to sell the land
presently being occupied by the Nigerian
Army barracks at Ikpoba Hill and all
these are efforts by the state government
to raise money at all costs to remain
afloat and I want to assure Edo people
that all that will be reverted through
legal means as soon as the PDP
government takes over power in 2016.
“When I criticized the state government
for its inability to commence all the
projects earmarked for execution as a
result of lack of funds due to its
insolvency, they came up the next day to
say that the state was not broke and that
I was lying, only to come up few weeks
later to say the state was applying for
World Bank loan for erosion project in
the state.”
Orbih who spoke in Benin, while
receiving a defector from the APC to PDP
from Ovia South-West Local Government
Area, Charles Amadasu, said: “We had
earlier stopped them from selling Edo
House in Lagos through court injunction
and that case is still on and it will not be
disposed off in the next three years and I
can assure you with all confidence that
Edo House will not be sold by the state
government.”
But reacting to the alleged plan to sell
the Army Barracks land at Ikpoba Hill by
the state government, the state Publicity
Secretary of APC, Godwin Erhahon, said:
“First, I am not in a position to confirm
that but if the government has any
reason to put the land into proper use
for the benefit of the people and decides
to allocate it to individuals, what is the
business of the PDP?”

Politics / An Open Letter To Gen BUHARI by drsolob2(m): 12:33pm On Jan 28, 2015
A NIGERIAN YOUTH WROTE THIS LETTER TO BUHARI.

Sir, let us examine your service records.
I consider
your
generation a very
privileged one, indeed. In 1975 at the
age of 33,
you were
appointed the Military
Governor of the North-Eastern State,
present day
Borno &
Yobe states.
In 1976 at the age of 34 you became the
Minister
for
Petroleum and Natural
Resources. In 1978 at the age of 36 you
became
the Chairman
of the Nigeria
National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Today the
reverse is
the case. Most
Nigerians at age of 35 are still
unemployed and still
living
with parents. Many are
still not married. During your time you
were
already Governor
at this age.
One major reason for this unfortunate
turn of
events is that
many elders like you
have refused to voluntarily handover
the baton to
the next
generation. Life should
be a relay race where one runs his race
and hands
over to the
next. In Nigeria
many elders like you have run their
races and are
still holding
on tenaciously to
the baton.
But Sir, I have an important question
here for you.
The
question is simple, MUST
YOU SERVE NIGERIA AS A PRESIDENT
ONLY? IS
THERE NO
OTHER CAPACITY YOU
CAN SERVE US EXCEPT THE PRESIDENCY?
It is
very
erroneous to imagine that you
can only serve Nigeria only in one
capacity. During
the regime
of late General Sani
Abacha, you accepted the appointment
to serve as
the
Chairman of the then
Petroleum Trust Fund PTF.
The general opinion was that you served
faithfully
in this
capacity. Well done Sir!
But you never asked Abacha to vacate
office for
you as your
former subordinate in
the army. Never! In fact that would have
been a
dangerous
move, if not suicidal.
Rather you served faithfully under your
former
junior in the
army. Sir, imagine if
you take on another job like the
Chairman of EFCC
or ICPC or
NDLEA.
Nigerians actually need you to serve in
one of
these
capacities much more than
they need you in the Presidency. Mere
mentioning
your name
as Chairman of EFCC
would drive many corrupt men
underground. But
you
wouldn’t . Either the
Presidency or nothing. When are you
going to
handover to the
next person? It is
either you do it voluntarily or risk
disgrace at the
polls. In
1983 at the age of 41,
you became the Head of State.
Most Nigerians in my age have not had
the
opportunity to
serve, but we still remain
committed to the Nigerian project. You
should
rather be
graceful to God and to
Nigerians for the numerous
opportunities that have
come your
way to serve
Nigerians. Others are begging for just
one
opportunity to
serve. Sir, you have to
accept the stark reality on ground that
you have
served your
time already.
That is life for you. You run the race, you
handover
the baton
for others to run, you
cannot hold on to the baton more than
is
necessary. As a
former head of State you
are already a member of the Council of
State
Meeting. You
have every avenue to
channel your views across. You don’t
necessarily
have to be
in a front-line role,
you can serve in an advisory capacity.
That is still
service.
In conclusion, It is crystal clear that you
cannot
defeat
President Jonathan in a
free, fair and credible election, even in
Katsina
State.
Sentiments aside, Jonathan would
cruise to a
landslide
victory come February 14th,
2015. In fairness to you Sir, any of your
Children
would pose a
serious challenge to
Jonathan more than yourself.
I do not see Nigerians electing a 72 year
old former
Head of
state to lead us in this
Digital era. With due respect to you Sir,
you belong
to the
Analogue age and
therefore, will not fit in as president in
this digital
era.
This is the blunt truth. Please do not
enter the
Guinness book
of world records on
a negative note. Losing four consecutive
Presidential election
would not augur well
for your reputation. It is in your best
interest to
assume your
position as an elder
statesman and allow others to serve.
Nigeria does
not belong
to you alone. It
belongs to us all. copy and post on your
wall let it
go round,
is time we youth tell
our self the truth
Politics / APC Kicks As NCC Bans Networks From Advertising by drsolob2(m): 7:27am On Jan 22, 2015
The All Progressives Congress has berated the National Communications Commission for directing telecoms companies not to run political adverts.

The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said during a press conference in Lagos on Wednesday that the directive was issued in order to give the Peoples Democratic Party an unfair advantage.

Mohammed said the directive was suspect as it was issued shortly after the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, unveiled the platforms through which Nigerians could make monetary contributions to the campaign of its presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

He noted that Fashola had disclosed that apart from receiving contributions through bank deposits, Nigerians could make donations through SMS, ringtones and scratch cards.

Mohammed, however, said the NCC instructed telecoms service providers not to accept political promotions and adverts so that Buhari would not be able to get enough funds.

He said the directive would not affect the PDP because President Goodluck Jonathan had already been able to raise over N21bn.

He wondered why traditional media like newspapers, televisions and radios would be allowed to carry adverts while the telecoms were being barred.

He said, “The NCC has now written to all the service providers to avoid running political/advertisement promotions that will portray them as being partisan and has threatened to sanction any service provider that will flout this directive. Effectively, the NCC is seeking to block our ability to use the platforms of SMS, ringtones and scratch cards to raise funds.

“By doing so, the same body, a national institution, that is warning telecoms companies against running political/advertisements in order not to be portrayed as partisan has become a tool of crass partisanship! What an irony!!

“It is also necessary to note that no regulatory body has barred the use of the traditional platforms of radio, television and print media from running political advertisements and promotions.

“There can’t be a clearer example of abuse of office. We are extremely concerned by this brazen act of intimidation and regulatory lawlessness towards legitimate businesses providing perfectly legitimate advertisement services, especially when the advertisers have not breached any law or prevented their subscribers from opting out of such services.”

“We are all the more appalled that the NCC seems splendidly oblivious of the fact that the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 does not outlaw advertisements.”

Politics / Don’t Dump PDP, Jonathan Begs Aggrieved Aspirants by drsolob2(m): 8:15am On Dec 22, 2014
President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday
appealed to all the Peoples Democratic
Party aspirants who are aggrieved as a
result of the outcome of its primaries across
the country not to leave the party.
He said the party leadership was working
hard to resolve the conflicts thrown up by
the primaries in many states.
Jonathan spoke at the PDP Fund Raising
Dinner, held at the old Banquet Hall of the
Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Many state chapters of the party are
currently enmeshed in controversy over
alleged cases of imposition of candidates,
either by state governors or the national
headquarters of the PDP.
The situation has led to many party
stalwarts leaving the party or threatening to
leave.
Among those who have left to join the
opposition All Progressives Congress were
Jonathan’s former Minister of State,
Industry, Trade and Investment, Samuel
Ortom, after he failed to clinch the party’s
governorship ticket in Benue State.
Jonathan, however, said it was better for
aggrieved party members to remain in the
system to correct whatever they felt was
wrong in the party than jumping ship.
Although he said conscious efforts were
being made to resolve the post-primaries
crisis in some states, the President admitted
that all the cases might not be resolved to
the satisfaction of all the parties concerned.
He, however, said the party would be guided
by the issues raised when preparing for the
primaries of the 2019 elections.
He said, “We all appreciate that throughout
the congresses where primaries were
conducted, there have been some
outstanding issues. The party is working to
resolve these issues. Definitely, in such a
situation, all may not be resolved to the
satisfaction of everybody.
“But my plea to party members is to remain
committed to the party; stay with the party.
“I know other parties are wooing some of
you to contest elections on their platforms,
but if you believe in democracy then you
will contribute to strengthening it.
“The only way you can strengthen
democracy is for you to stay in your party.
“If there are some issues you feel are not
too correct, it behoves on us to stay
together and correct them. That is the only
way we can grow democracy.
“If out of anger or frustration, you leave the
party because you didn’t get what you
wanted, then you are not contributing to
the growth of democracy.”
The President said the major task before the
ruling party was to ensure that the country
remain united.
While thanking those who donated the over
N21bn realised at the dinner, he said the
money was needed to build a formidable
party.
He observed that if parties were tied around
individuals, there would be dictatorial
tendencies in such parties.
He promised that the money realised would
be judiciously utilised, like his
administration had done with the different
funds raised earlier.
Describing his administration as business-
friendly, he promised donors of more
policies that would promote enterprise and
industry.
But some of the aggrieved chieftains of the
party including a former national chairman
of the party, Senator Barnabas Gemade, a
former governor of Oyo State, Adebayo
Alao-Akala, who recently left the party, said
they could only return to the PDP if the
problems that led to their defection were
tackled objectively.
Gemade, who left the PDP to protest what
he said was a primary skewed in favour of
the incumbent Benue State Governor,
Gabriel Suswam, told one of our
correspondents in a telephone interview
that nobody had appealed to him.
Asked if he would yield to President
Jonathan’s appeal not to leave the party, he
said, “Nobody has made any appeal to me. I
won’t be able to make comment on
something that has not happened.”

Politics / Fear Envelops Ministry, Agencies As FG Sacks 187 by drsolob2(m): 7:45am On Dec 22, 2014
Dele Ogbodo in Abuja

Following the sack of over 187 staffers of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the suspension of two of its Directors, by the federal government, the Ministry of Aviation, including its agencies' over 830 members of staff have been gripped by palpable fear as they await the final outcome of the audit report constituted by the minister, Mr. Osita Chidoka, THISDAY can confidently report.

The ministry’s agencies are: the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), NCAA, Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET), the Nigerian Airspace Management Authority (NAMA) the Nigeria College Aviation Technology (NCAT) and the Accident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIPB).

A senior official of one of the agencies, who spoke under anonymity with THISDAY on telephone on Saturday said the palpable fear gripping the agency is becoming obvious, adding that there is visible fear at the agency as staff are even afraid of going on their annual leave to enable them keep an eye on emerging wind of sack at the ministry.

He said the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the ministry and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has created more fears within the industry, adding that the news going round is that all the agencies have been directed to shed weight.

Details later.

Health / Study Suggests Milk Doesn't Strengthen Your Bones - It Ages You Instead by drsolob2(m): 11:59am On Oct 31, 2014
We’ve been brought up to think that
drinking milk is good for our bones, but new
research suggests that not only is this false,
but the sugars in it may actually be
accelerating the ageing process.

A research team from Uppsala University in Sweden has found that women who drink more than three glasses of milk per day were more likely to break their bones than women who drank less.

This finding was part of a study conducted
on more than 100,000 people in Sweden,
based on how much diary they habitually
consumed. The researchers monitored the
diets of 61,400 women between 1987 and
1990 and 45,300 men through 1997 by
asking them to fill out questionaries on how often they ate common dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yoghurt. The health of
the female participants was monitored for
20 years after the questionnaires, and for
11 years afterwards for the males.
Publishing their results in the BMJ, the
team says that in women, high milk intake
led to a greater risk of bone fracture, and in both men and women, it was associated
with a higher mortality rate.
"Women who drank three or more glasses a day had twice the chance of dying at the
end of the study than those who drank less
than one glass a day,” lead researcher Karl
Michaelsson, a professor in medical
epidemiology at Uppsala University, told
BBC News. "And those who had a high milk
intake also had a 50 percent higher risk of
hip fracture."
Interestingly, unlike milk, when the diary
product was fermented, like in yoghurt, the
results were reversed. The participants who
consumed more yoghurt showed a
decreased risk of experiencing bone
fractures. Michaelsson told BBC News
that the difference could be down to the
sugars that are found in milk - lactose and
galactose. Both have been shown to
accelerate ageing processes such as
inflammation and oxidative stress in
previous research using animals.
While the study involved a good amount of
participants and was conducted over a
relatively long period of time, the
researchers are careful to point out that
they’re not ready to draw causal
conclusions just yet. Something they want
to look at in the future is if alcohol
consumption and weight could have had an effect on the results.

“As milk features in many dietary guidelines
and both hip fractures and cardiovascular
disease are relatively common among older
people, improving the evidence base for
dietary recommendations could have
substantial benefits for everyone,”
epidemiologist Mary Schooling from the
City University of New York in the US, wrote
in an accompanying editorial in the BMJ.
