Immediate past Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives APC, Timi Frank, has accused the Federal government of planning to freeze the accounts of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Rivers state governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, Sokoto state governor Aminu Tambuwal, National Chairman of PDP, Uche Secondu and former governor of Kano state, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Vanguard reports that Timi made this allegation in a statement released yesterday. The former APC spokesperson said the government is also planning to freeze the accounts of some businessmen and women who are sympathetic to the opposition parties. He alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will be used to raise different allegations against major opposition leaders and serving governors across the country in order to demoralised the opposition leaders and render them incapacitated financially.
According to Frank, the recent reported frozen of accounts of two PDP states (Benue and Akwa Ibom) formed part of the plot to ensure that states being controlled by the opposition parties are deprived from having resources to run government and blackmail them into joining the ruling party.

Serena Williams withdraws from Rogers Cup after suffering worst defeat of her career
Serena Williams has announced her decision to withdraw from the Rogers Cup in Montreal, citing personal reasons for dropping out.
The news comes after the 23-times Grand Slam singles champion lost 6-0 6-1 to Johanna Konta at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic last week, the heaviest defeat of her career.
Tournament organisers announced the 23-time Grand Slam champion's withdrawal from the event on Saturday.
"Of course, we are disappointed that Serena will not be joining us. Fans were very much looking forward to seeing her in action," tournament director Eugene Lapierre said.
"But beyond the disappointment, the tournament, as a whole, remains a high-level competition. The entire top 10 is here, along with 22 of the top 25. There are exciting matches in store from the outset."
The tournament opens on Monday with world No 1

A Florida mum has been charged with first-degree felony murder and aggravated child abuse after she threw her 4-year-old daughter into a river to her death as horrified onlookers watched.
Shakayla Denson, 26, threw 4-year-old Je’Hyrah Daniels into the Hillsborough River on Thursday and the child sank almost immediately. Divers searched the river for hours, looking for the child's body. She was eventually pulled out at around 4.30pm local time.
She was found unconscious and taken to nearby St Joseph’s Hospital but despite emergency personnel’s best attempts to resuscitate her, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Shakayla Denson was reportedly seen walking nearby when she was taken into custody, according to Tampa Bay police. She had allegedly stolen a grey Nissan Altima from a local car repair garage before killing her daughter, so she was also charged with Grand Theft Auto.
The motive for the murder is unclear.

A bizarre challenge called 'Hot Water Challenge' which involves drinking boiling water, or pouring it on a friend has left a 15-year-old boy in Indiana seriously burned.

Kyland Clark from Indianapolis said he was left with second-degree burns when a friend pulled a prank on him last week as part of the “Hot Water Challenge,” news station WXIN reported.

Before the incident, the victim and his friend reportedly checked out the challenge on YouTube and decided to try it.

According to the news station, while the teen was sleeping, his friend poured boiling water on him, causing serious burns on his back, chest and face.

My skin just fell off my chest, and then I looked in the mirror and I had skin falling off here and, on my face,” Kyland told the news station.

The teen was rushed admitted to a local hospital, where he remained under treatment for a week, with doctors telling him that his skin will take several months to heal.

“To see my baby, all burned up like that, it was heartbreaking,” his mom Andrea Clark told WXIN.

Dr. Ed Bartkus of Indiana University Health also issued a fair warning that the challenge can cause permanent injuries or even death.

“If your friends are telling you to do this, they aren’t good friends,” he told Fox 59.

A young boy who was pronounced dead after drowning came back to life a few hours later to the surprise of medics.
The boy drowned over the weekend and was pronounced dead a short while later but he resurrected the next day, according to Jared Sawyer Jr., a motivational speaker and the host of a new TV show called Empower Today.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday expressed worries over poor funding ahead of the 2019 general elections.
The commission’s problem is compounded by the non-approval of the 2019 election fund requests sent to the National Assembly.
President Muhammadu Buhari had last week sent a request for the national assembly to approve N254 billion for the conduct of 2019 elections.
But the national assembly proceeded on recess to resume in September, 2018.
The INEC Chairman, Mahmoud Yakubu, spoke during State House Press Corps retreat on the theme: “Covering Election Campaigns” at the Epe Resort, Lagos State.
Represented by the Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Samuel Olumeku, Yakubu said the commission was facing funding challenge ahead of the 2019 elections.
He, however, assured that the Commission will have to seek other sources of funding to ensure that its plans do not grind to a halt.
He said “As you know, our procurement process is very cumbersome and to make procurement it may take up to four months and this may affect what we are doing at INEC. But we may be forced to look at other sources of funding so that our preparation for the 2019 election is not affected”
He also said that INEC has an extensive process of preparations for every election.
“When we are not conducting election, we are out there educating the people” he added
The commission also expressed worries over the problem of votes buying which the INEC described as “worrisome”
He said, “Votes buying has taken a frightening dimension”, but assured that INEC has put in place measures to tackle the challenge.
The INEC Chairman also lamented the non- assent to the 2018 amendment to the Electoral Act, a situation he said may make the organization to jettison the Act unless it comes into effect not later than six months to the election.
“Well, as you know, we work with rules and the 2018 Electoral Act is expected to guide the conduct of the 2019 general election, but we may not be able to use it unless it comes six months before the general election.
“We need a budget to be able to run the election, any law that does not come into effect six months before the election cannot apply to the 2019 election.
On voter’s card cloning, he assured that such cards will be rejected by the smart card reader, adding that “you cannot vote with such cards.”
The INEC Chairman advocated for a rejig on its election spending rules to include spending by individuals who want to support candidates
“As it is now, as a person, you can spend any amount to support any candidate or political party but the law only allows INEC to scrutinize the books of the political parties”
He also cautioned the media against sensitization of reports that tend to discourage voters from turning out to vote, especially as it affects heightening of security risks.
“INEC lacks facilities to print voters card at the spot of registration which is why it issues temporarily cards.” he stated
Chairman of This Day Editorial Board, Segun Adeniyi who presented a paper on “Covering the Presidential Villa During Campaigns; Between Professional / Sentimental Interest” observed that reporters must maintain delicate balancing reporting in the Villa, urging reporters to be careful.
He also urged reporters to avoid sensational reportage, including stories that have no attribution.
“There are lots of information going on, do not allow anybody to use you.”
Adeniyi, who recounted his experience both as reporter and later Special Adviser on Media and Publicity at the Presidential Villa, said reporters must be both accurate and objective in their reporting.
According to him, “You must learn to control your emotions and be tactful in handling newsmakers and news.
“You won’t know the fight other people do on your behalf at the background. It won’t be a sweet story when you have to face the security.
“The government just want to muzzle the Press, because they are in power today, they want to see themselves as the custodian of the national security.
“Facts are sacred, while comets are free” There is nothing going on today that did not happen in 2015. Let Buhari go today and another person comes in, it will be the same for the new comer.
“People should not be so sentimental or emotional to the extent that you become part of the story. These politicians are all the same. Try as much as possible to be objective in your reporting. Many people get worked up for people they did not even know.
“People get worked up for nothing, that is why we should have an open mind and it should not affect our friendship. People are entitled to their choices but we should be objective.” he said
Noting that it was a bitter experience under the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, he said that he was surprised that even under democracy things weren’t better.
He admonished State House correspondents to avoid the perks coming from officials as it may affect the ways they work

Teenager steals his father's car to go on a cruise
The horrifying moment a teenager mowed down five men after stealing his dad's BMW was caught on CCTV.
Horrifying CCTV footage shows the blue sports car driven by Max Maxwell, 18, swinging onto the wrong side of the road before mounting the footpath and crunching into some men as they walked to the pub in Canvey, Essex.
The schoolboy, who had passed his driving test only three days before, fled the scene immediately after and only handed himself in at a local police station 20 hours later.
Cops said the victims - all friends in their 20s - were left with "life-changing physical and emotional injuries". The men had been on their way to watch the Grand National at a local pub earlier this year. They were left bleeding and with open fractures in a scene described in court as looking like a "war zone".
Max has been sentenced to three years and three months in a young offenders' institution and banned from driving for five years and seven months.

Max Maxwell took his father's car without permission then drove it in such a manner that he endangered the lives of the public.
He ploughed into the five men, causing some horrific life-changing injuries and ongoing emotional and psychological trauma.
He had absolutely no concern for them whatsoever and ran away. He then hid from us for almost 20 hours before handing himself in.

Spain's high tax rate was a contributing factor in Cristiano Ronaldo's decision to join Juventus, according to La Liga president Javier Tebas.

The Zambian government has banned Congolese rumba singer, Koffi Olomide from performing in the country due to several allegations levelled against him. Olomide’s charges include sexually assaulting his dancers, kidnapping them and employing them without valid permits in France.
Koffi who regularly performs in Zambia, was due to hold two shows in Lusaka and Kitwe this month. The ban follows an appeal by the French embassy in Zambia, which requested local authorities to arrest Olomide if he travelled to the southern African country.
The appeal has been hailed by Zambian officials, who through the Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs, Godfridah Sumaili, told local media that the singer would be arrested upon arrival.
Olomide’s ban was also welcomed by the Zambia National Women’s Lobby (ZNWL), which said the singer should clear his name before performing in the country. “We believe as many Zambians do that Koffi Olomide should first be cleared of all the charges levelled against him before he can perform on Zambian soil,” the ZNWL said.
“ It is sad to note that Koffi Olomide’s illustrious music career has been marred by allegations of human rights violations and abuses, especially of women, who are in his care by virtue of employment. In 2016, Olomide was caught on camera assaulting one of his dancers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) says it will impose a stiffer sanction on the Ekiti State Broadcasting Service (EBS) if it fails to pay N500,000 fine within the stipulated period.
The NBC Head of Public Affairs, Maimuna Jimada, made the disclosure in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
“Time frame to pay up a national broadcasting fine is 14 days. If they don’t pay within that time, they will get a higher sanction.
“Meanwhile, the station remains closed till further notice,” she said.
According to the official, EBS on July 11 breached Sections 5.2.7 and 5.2.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code and was reprimanded and fined N500,000 by the commission.
NAN reports that NBC also shut down the station on Sunday for infractions on the code and the Electoral Act.
The commission said on its website that it shut down the station following unauthorised declaration of Saturday’s Ekiti governorship election results by Gov. Ayodele Fayose on the station.
The commission added that Mr Fayose made malicious and unsubstantiated claims against the Independent National Electoral Commission, the police and the Department of Security Services.
The NBC said that it had, on June 5, queried the station’s Acting Director-General, Lere Olayinka, over breach of Section 5.2.18 of the code, and the query ignored.
It said that all broadcasters must adhere strictly to the ethics of the profession in conducting all programmes on their stations in respect to the code,

Moments ago, the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika unveiled the name of Nigeria’s national carrier, as well as the logo at the Farnborough International Airshow in London.

There is no let up in the killings in Plateau State as gunmen suspected to be herdsmen struck again yesterday, killing a vigilante and stealing nine cows belonging to the Anglican Archbishop of Jos, the Right Reverend Benjamin Kwashe.
The State Police Command spokesman, Terna Tyopev, said the incident occurred at Kangan community of Jos South Local Government Area.
Also yesterday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, the Berom demanded the return of their 52 villages allegedly seized by suspected herdsmen.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted Tyopev as saying: “Today, at about 7a.m, we received information that nine cattle, belonging to the Anglican Archbishop of Jos were rustled by men suspected to be herdsmen”.
“In the process, one Adamu Dung, 46, vigilante in the area was shot and killed by the rustlers,” Tyopev said.
The body has been deposited at the Bingham University Hospital, Jos.
The police, he said, had begun investigation into the matter.
Last Sunday, suspected herdsmen attacked Barkin-Ladi, Riyom, in Jos South Local Government Areas of the state, killing no fewer than 86 people.
The Berom people alleged that rampaging Fulani herdsmen have seized and are forcefully occupying 52 Berom villages across the state.

Family members of the victims of Thursday’s tanker fire outbreak on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway yesterday besieged government hospitals in search of loved ones.
This was just as a source hinted on the possibility of mass burial for the deceased victims of the explosion, given the terrible conditions of the bodies.
It was gathered that all the bodies were burnt beyond recognition while a good number were dismembered by rescue equipment.
An official involved in the rescue operation, who said the bodies were taken to Mainland General Hospital, Yaba, told our correspondent yesterday that although the state government was yet to take a decision in respect of the burial arrangement, mass burial for deceased victims could not be ruled out.
The official said: “I really do not know, but the possibility of mass burial cannot be ruled out. People who are complaining about not seeing their loved ones, is it completely burnt bodies they want to see?
“The bodies are not recognisable. If there will be DNA, the government will decide on it and make a pronouncement.”
Our correspondent, who visited the Trauma Centre of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Ikeja and the General Hospital at Gbagada, Lagos, observed a lot of people making enquiries on the whereabouts of their folks.

Four persons, including two women and a little girl, have died in separate car accidents on Ogun State corridor of the Lagos – Ibadan Expressway and Lagos – Ore expressway respectively.

The first accident occurred when a speeding Toyota corolla saloon car skidded of its track atop the Ososa dual carriage bridge along Lagos – Ore Expressway and plunged into the river around midnight last Friday.

Two persons – adult male and a girl-were said to have died in the process while 10 others, including seven children, sustained various degrees of injury.

It was learnt the saloon car driven by a police sergeant with 12 passengers, including his seven children, lost control of the wheel while speeding and fell into the river.

The second accident occurred yesterday at the Fidiwo – Oniworo stretch of the Lagos – Ibadan Expressway.

It left two women dead and three others injured when two Sienna cars collided.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the accidents to our correspondent.

He said the one at Fidiwo involved two Sienna cars marked LSD 266 CK and AGL 554 EA. Akinbiyi said one of the Sienna cars had brake failure with the two vehicles coming from opposite direction on Lagos – Ibadan expressway when they collided.

While one of the women died at the accident scene, the other died on the way to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) Sagamu.
