Jokes Etc / Sadness And Recovery From Addiction by Ebukaangus: 9:25pm On Jul 01, 2017
For over 50 years now, standard treatments for recovery from addiction have included cognitive behavioral therapy (C.B.T) and 12-step approaches. The past couple of decades, though, have seen alternative treatment models emerge, largely because of the relatively low success rate of some of the most popular treatments available. Since there is no single road to addiction, standard treatments sometimes fail because they fail to address the needs of the particular individual, or the reasons why they have sought their own private escape, through drugs. Addiction can arise from a variety of causes, according to recent research. Contributing causes include genetic factors, having a mental illness, abuse, etc.

Alternative therapies that are currently being used successfully in many top rehabilitation centers across the globe include yoga and mindfulness meditation (which focus on keeping the individual’s mind ‘in the here and now’, encouraging them to feel and ‘ride through’ their cravings instead of succumbing to a ‘higher power’ for help or trying to push their desires away). Horticultural therapy and art therapy, too, have garnered their fair share of success; the former because of its strong mindfulness component and the latter because of its ability to embrace an addict’s ambivalent feelings about quitting drugs. Art therapy is an important component of motivational interviewing , which seeks to promote reliance on the self to overcome addiction by finding inspiring reasons to quit.

A person who is addicted to drugs has many positive things to look forward to when they are drug-free. These include mending bridges with family and friends who may feel let down, finding one’s place in one’s profession once again and having he chance to do what ignites one’s passion, and enjoying a sense of greater physical and mental wellness. Motivational interviewing through art therapy, however, provides the recovering person with the chance to express their sadness. It is unrealistic to think that there is nothing an addict will miss when they are no longer using and they should have a chance to recognize and express their ambivalent feelings.

Because art is so symbolic, it permits many interpretations and through their work (and with an aid of a trained therapist), the person in recovery can talk about why using drugs fulfilled them, without feeling like they are being judged, blamed or criticized.

What is there to feel sad about when one quits drug use? Addicts in recovery may miss the group of friends they used to use with, or a person they were romantically involved with; they may miss the high, the feeling of escape, the elation of avoiding responsibility. The individual should be allowed to express their grief about quitting drugs. Like all other grief, theirs travels through different stages (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance). Note that depression (feeling intensely sad, feeling hopeless or without the motivation to do things one used to love) is an undeniable part of the recovery process. We should never disenfranchise someone of the right to grieve, yet many recovery therapies fail because they seek to do just that.

Families and friends should be sensitive to this issue and should not force the individual to see only the positive side of recovery.

Sadness should be acknowledged and heard,

Foreign Affairs / Parliament In Germany Approves Same Sex Marriage by Ebukaangus: 8:41pm On Jun 30, 2017
Lawmakers in Germany voted on Friday to allow same sex marriage after a brisk but emotional debate in Parliament, setting the stage for the country to join more than a dozen European nations including Ireland, France and Spain in legalizing such unions.

The historic decision came with a swiftness rare in Germany’s usually staid politics, after Chancellor Angela Merkel unexpectedly eased her conservative party’s

Science/Technology / The Art Of Manipulation And Misdirection by Ebukaangus: 9:04am On Jun 25, 2017
I was at Qualcomm last week, listening to an economist talk about Apple's complaints that Qualcomm had charged Apple too much for access to patents. What I thought was fascinating was that Apple had folks focused on the 5 percent that Qualcomm had charged it instead of on the massive profit that Apple made on each phone.

The price of the iPhone 8 is rumored to be well over US$1,000 but it could cost well under $500 to build.
(Check out this WSJ video on how you can build a decent smartphone for less than $70 in China.)

All other smartphone prices seem to be trending down, while Apple's appear to be trending up.

This near-magical behavior is an example of expert manipulation, and in a world of fake news, it's suddenly a more interesting topic to cover. (It also suggests that Apple's level of control over its customer base could be an anti-customer, if not an antitrust, problem.)

Oh, and that's on top of the issues that may prevent the iPhone from being shipped in the first place.

I'll use Apple as an example to illustrate the art of manipulation and misdirection - although it's hardly the only one that engages in it. I'll close with my product of the week: a new router from Symantec that may be the perfect thing for securing your home in a hostile world.

Art Appreciation
There's an art to manipulation and misdirection. I first became aware of this skill in college while doing my undergraduate work. One of the modules in a class I took on manpower management was on manipulators - people who were good at getting people to do things for them, changing minds, and generally, well, manipulating others.

There was a test for measuring this skill, and the scoring range was 1-20. Anyone who scored more than 12 had a high inherent ability to manipulate, according to the test. One poor guy scored 15 and everyone in the class made fun of him. However, there was another student who scored 17, and no one even noticed. He was the one who focused the rest of us on the guy who scored 15 -- and he didn't even know he was doing it.

Technology Market / Us Air Force F-16 Jet Crashes, Catches Fire In Texas by Ebukaangus: 12:36pm On Jun 22, 2017
US Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft has crashed during takeoff from an airbase in the state of Texas.

The incident took place on Wednesday morning, when the jet from the 138th Fighter Wing caught fire and covered the runway at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base with a big cloud of smoke.
The pilot safely ejected from the burning plane and was taken to a hospital to receive care for his possible injuries.

“The aircraft, under the direction of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), was conducting a training flight,” the North American Aerospace Command said in a statement.
A large number of firefighters reported to the scene and began their work after cordoning off a one-mile evacuation zone.

"The Houston Fire Department is responding to a military jet which has caught fire on the north side of Ellington Field in southeast Houston," Houston's Office of Emergency Management said in a statement, warning locals that there would be increased traffic in the area.

Science/Technology / Autonomous Airbus Helicopter Makes Its First Flights by Ebukaangus: 8:11pm On Jun 21, 2017
Although Airbus' passenger-carrying autonomous drones may still be years away from reality, that hasn't stopped the aerospace company from getting an autonomous helicopter off the ground.
A demonstrator version of the VSR 700 Optionally Piloted Vehicle (OPV) has recently made its first self-piloted test flights, with the first flight of the fully decked-out prototype set to take place next year.
In the flights that have taken place so far, the helicopter has successfully taken off/landed, hovered, and performed stabilized flight and maneuvers. A human "safety pilot" was in the cockpit in case the multi-channel automatic flight control system malfunctioned.

Science/Technology / Giant Dinosaur Predators From Africa (niger Fossil Discovery) by Ebukaangus: 10:59pm On Jun 20, 2017
Giant Carnivores from Prehistoric Africa
A team of paleontologists from the University of Chicago led by the world- famous and celebrated paleontologist, Paul Sereno have published papers on two new carnivores from Gondwanaland, the ancestors of the biggest dinosaur meat-eaters of all.

These two dinosaurs date from the Albian fauna stage of the Lower Cretaceous (approximately 110 million years ago), one was possibly a specialist scavenger, the other a fierce predator, with teeth designed to tackle live prey. The University of Chicago team have had their work published in the scientific journal Acta Palaeontologica Polonica. The paper has been co-authored by Paul Sereno and Stephen Brusatte. Stephen, who worked with Dr Sereno as an undergraduate at the University of Chicago and is now based in Britain, commented on the importance of these two finds. He stated that the different dentition and shape of the skulls gave the scientists an insight into the type of food these animals ate, comparing the 110 million year old fossils to the type of ecosystem found on the Masai Mara with Hyenas and Lions.

Niger - An Important Country for Palaeontologists and their Work The partial, incomplete fossil skeletons were first unearthed in 2000, in the African country of Niger. Niger has proved to be a lucrative hunting ground for the University of Chicago with Dr Sereno being responsible for a number of prehistoric animal discoveries.

The dinosaurs have been named Kryptops palaios (means old hidden face ) and Eocarcharia dinops (means fierce-eyed dawn shark ). Kryptops had a Hot ridge covering much of its snout, the blunt muzzle and the relatively small but sharp teeth indicate that this animal may have specialised in scavenging the kills of other predators. Eocarcharia was about the same size as Kryptops at about 8metres long and standing 2.2 metres at the hips, it also had a bony brow, typical of the Allosauroidea family. The re-curved and very sharp teeth of Eocarcharia indicate that this animal was a predator, tackling live prey.

Agriculture / Learning To Recognize Animal Intelligence by Ebukaangus: 10:25am On Jun 20, 2017
There is an argument to be made that nothing travels farther on social media than animals. I had already seen coverage of the news that some Australian birds appear to purposely set fires in order to flush prey animals out of the underbrush when the story cropped up again recently in my Facebook feed. Based on some of the comments, many people seemed surprised by this discovery. My reaction was more along the lines of: "Well, of course."

However, I do promise to be surprised if I ever hear that a bird has started a fire in order to collect the insurance proceeds. Preliminary evidence and eyewitness reports
have indicated that the brown falcon and the black kite, birds that regularly hunt at the edges of wildfires, have picked up smoldering pieces of brush and dropped them in new areas in an effort to smoke out the frogs, lizards and snakes that make up the birds' food source.

Researchers are now working to record video of the phenomenon, both in Australia and in other places. Purposefully setting fires has now joined tool use, complex emotions and altruism on the list of characteristics we once thought of as exclusively human but that have since been observed elsewhere in the animal kingdom too.

Agriculture / The Dangers And Risks Of Animal Hoarding by Ebukaangus: 9:44am On Jun 20, 2017
In an attempt to learn the true reasoning behind animal hoarding, which has been an issue amongst some animal owners for a great many years, veterinarians and animal rights activists have taken their research to a new and heightened level. What has been discovered lives in the realm of the human psyche, and medical definitions for this type of disorder are likened to forms of dementia, obsessive compulsive disorder, and disillusionment. When animal hoarding as a psychological disorder is brought to the courtroom, it is much more difficult to actually hold an individual responsible for the neglect and cruelty often discovered in such cases. The health and welfare of humans still far outweighs that of any animal species, and as such will leave the suffering of hoarded
