Chad has withdrawn hundreds of troops from neighbouring Niger, where they were helping local forces fight Boko Haram Islamist militants, humanitarian sources and officials said. The pull-out over the past two weeks could weaken a region-wide struggle against the militants who have killed tens of thousands of people, forced many more to flee and triggered a humanitarian crisis. There was no immediate explanation or comment from defense officials in Chad. The move came a month after the vast central African country complained about an unexpected U.S. travel ban imposed on its nationals. Chad warned at the time the order could affect its security commitments, which include its involvement in the U.S.-backed fight against Boko Haram. Residents said the withdrawal had already had an impact on Niger’s Diffa region, which has seen a string of attacks by Boko Haram militants crossing over from their base in neighbouring Nigeria. Ibrahim Arimi from the border village of Bosso said banditry had increased since the Chadian troops started leaving and he had been temporarily moved to another village for safety. Diffa parliamentarian Lamido Moumouni said residents had started complaining. “They have come to rely on the forces so there is a perception that security will be lacking,” he said by telephone. At its peak in 2016 after an attack in Bosso, Chad had 2,000 troops in Niger to help counter Boko Haram although security sources said this has fallen since. Boko Haram has attacked Chad, Niger and Cameroon from its base in northeast Nigeria. Its eight-year bid to carve out an Islamist caliphate has driven millions from their homes, no fewer than 200,000 of them are now based in Diffa, with little prospect of returning home. Thousands of them are camped alongside an unfinished highway in the middle of a barren savannah with few resources. Chad’s soldiers also occupy front-line positions in a peacekeeping force in northern Mali. Analysts say falling oil revenues after the price crash in 2014 has also sapped Chad’s appetite for expensive regional security commitments. more details here: http://mntrends..com.ng/2017/10/a-man-was-arrested-in-south-africa-with.html

- Governor Nasir El-Rufai said about 21,780 out of 33,000 Kaduna state teachers failed the primary four test - El-Rufai explained that the test was conducted by the state government to know the ability of the teachers - He stressed that many teachers would be redeployed across the state to balance the issue of teacher-pupil ratio Nasir El-Rufai, the Kaduna state governor, said about 21,780 out of 33,000 teachers failed the primary four test administered to test their competence by the state government. Governor el-Rufai made this known on Monday, October 9, while receiving a World Bank’s delegation in the state, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. He said:''We tested our 33,000 primary school teachers, we gave them primary four examination and required they must get at least 75 per cent but I am sad to announce that 66 per cent of them failed to get the requirements. ''The hiring of teachers in the past was politicized and we intend to change that by bringing in young and qualified primary school teachers to restore the dignity of education in the state.'' He stressed that teachers would be redeployed across the state to balance the issue of teacher-pupil ratio. According to him,“We have a challenge with the teacher-pupil ratio in the urban schools; there is concentration of teachers that are not needed. ''In some local government areas, it’s a teacher pupil ratio of 1-9 while in some places it’s 1-100.’’ The governor said that in a bid to improve the education sector, the school directors decided to enrol their children in public schools starting from this academic session. Speaking earlier, the World Bank representative, Kunle Adekola, expressed appreciation to the state for investing in education and for the priority given to the girl child. Adekola said the Bank would invest N30 million in Rigasa Primary School, which has a population of about 22,000 pupils, as part of its support for the state. source>>http://www.mntrends.com/ |

Multiple Grammy Award-winning rapper Nelly has been arrested after a woman accused him of raping her in his tour bus. He was arrested on Saturday in Auburn, State of Washington in the northwestern part of US, according to reports. Rapper Nelly: arrested for rape Police in Auburn said a woman called the emergency 911 just before 4:00 am local time (1100 GMT) “to report that she was sexually assaulted by a male, who is known as the rapper ‘Nelly.” After police investigated the incident, “at 4:37 AM Nelly was taken into custody and booked” at the local jail, the police statement read. According to TMZ, Nelly, whose schedule has him performing Saturday evening with country duo Florida Georgia Line in the city of Ridgefield, a two-hour drive to the south of Auburn, was booked on a charge of second-degree rape. Arsenal striker, Alexander Iwobi struck the final nail that snuffed life out of Zambia’s 2018 FIFA World Cup dream weekend at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium and immediately burst into his trademark celebration style that got fans rocking in wild jubilation. ALMLY . . . Nigeria’s forward Alex Iwobi (L) controls the ball ahead of Zambia’s midfielder Simon Silwimba during their match at the weekend. Iwobi, introduced into the game in the second half by manager Gernot Rohr in place of Moses Simon, looked every inch a prince in the shinning armour as he had just given Nigerians a befitting 57th birthday gift in form of a ticket to play in the greatest sporting event in the world next year and was expectedly revelling in the moment. For a player who has blood link with former Eagles captain and African legend, Austin Okocha, Iwobi is surely writing his own script in Nigerian football history, with his winning goal against Zambia. And speaking to scores of excited fans, Iwobi said that he was fulfilled to be part of the World Cup qualifying class of 2017 that guaranteed Nigeria a sixth appearance at the World Cup, with the added incentive of being the first to qualify from Africa. FORMER Nigeria’s Head of State, Geneneral Yakubu Gowon (retd) Sunday reiterated his call on different ethnic groups agitating for self determination to have a rethink, admonishing all Nigerians to work hard to convince all aggrieved people to imbibe the ideals one young Nigerian enunciated in an article during the Nigerian Civil War, urging fellow citizens to Go On With One Nigeria. Yakubu Gowon Speaking after receiving the 2017 Leadership Award at this year’s Trinity House Honour Nigeria Awards in Lagos for his sterling leadership role in Nigerian and African politics, the founder of Yakubu Gowon Centre revealed reasons why he declared “No Victor No Vanquished”, and what made him more determined to ensure that Nigeria remains one. Gowon who thanked the church and its leadership for the honour, dedicating the award to the Nigerian who gave him the support throughout his regime and right uptil now in an interview with journalists said: ” I am really humbled and grateful for this honour done to us today. I’m grateful also to know that so many people have been honoured before now, all deserving of the honour that they got. Mine is for leadership. I can assure you that leadership wouldn’t have been possible without that patriotic Nigerian who asked me whether I know the meaning of ‘Gowon.’ I replied him, “it’s my name” and in my local language it means the owner of the masquerade in a gong. “That young man wrote an article in one of the dailies, and when I read the article that early morning, he gave the meaning of Gowon as ‘Go On With One Nigeria.’ He created an acronym that Goes on with one Nigeria. I can assure you, I was very impressive as I said, so this is what Nigerians want me to do and this is what I was trying to get Nigerians to support me do it. ” But that message made me to be more determined to ensure that Nigeria remains as one for all of us and for the future generations. The honour today, I accept it on behalf of all Nigerians, past, present and also future. This church is about the love of God and the unity of the country. We can make Nigeria great. Forget all the differences happening and the harassment here and there. Nigeria is a great country,” he said. The former military Head of State commended the Trinity House, saying “God is saying to Nigerians, we are His people and Nigerians are highly religious. Even the traditional religion worshippers, they always worship that unknown God. That unknown God is the God Almighty that we all believe in. Honestly, I was touched to know that we all have to work to achieve the greatness of Nigeria. Every Nigeria must contribute his or her quota to keep the country as one.” Asked what he thinks of current agitations for self determination several years after the Nigerian Civil War, Gowon said: “I think I have answered it. You work hard to make sure you convince those who are calling for the break up of Nigeria. Tell them that Nigeria is one. This is what Nigerians told me to do, and this is what I tried to do. And I can achieve that through your help. We should work hard to convince those who want the country to break up. I can assure you there are more people who love Nigeria and would want Nigeria to continue to exist as one nation than those who are trying to create problem for the country.” Continuing, the convener of Nigeria Prays urged every Nigerian to be honest to God, saying “if you are honest to God and you love Him the way you should, and also, your neighbour…honestly, if we can practice that, things will begin to work well for us all. I love Nigeria, I believe in Nigeria like many other Nigerians. “Like that young man that wrote the article, telling me that the meaning of Gowon is Go On with One Nigeria. He sent a message to me and he gave me the courage that I can do it correctly and with the fear of God. That’s the reason why that civi war, we fought with a code of conduct…to be truthful. We ensured that we did not call them anything. We tried not to call the other side enemy and we never called them enemies. |
