Seafarers have emphasized that the Nigerian maritime industry has the capacity to generate $100 billion annually if effectively harnessed. This statement was made during the commemoration of the 2023 World Seafarers Day, organized by the Joint Body of Nigerian Seafarers' Professional Groups.

Captain Alfred Oniye, the Secretary-General of the Merchant Seafarers Association of Nigeria, highlighted the significance of implementing the Cabotage Act, stating that it could propel the maritime industry to generate a minimum of $50 billion each year. He stressed the need to tap into the potential opportunities in the industry, as well as the establishment of a coast guard, which would greatly benefit Nigeria.

Furthermore, Oniye expressed concern over the high unemployment rate among Nigerian seafarers, with 80% of them currently jobless and a significant portion not engaged in maritime activities. To enhance their competitiveness on a global scale, he advocated for additional professional training and the creation of job opportunities. He also suggested that the government should implement a policy requiring that 80% of the crew on ships flying the Nigerian flag be Nigerian seafarers, with the remaining 20% being foreign nationals.

Captain William Ogunshakin, Chairman of the organizing committee for the event, highlighted the dominance of foreign-owned vessels in Nigerian waters. He noted that a substantial amount of money paid for their services ends up in foreign countries, resulting in limited economic benefits for Nigeria. 2. The Act imposes renewable generation obligations on electricity generation license holders, meaning they are required to meet specified targets for generating electricity from renewable sources, as determined by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.

3. Electricity generation companies will be required to either generate power from renewable energy sources, purchase electricity generated from renewable sources, or acquire instruments that represent renewable energy generation. This promotes the adoption and integration of renewable energy into the power sector.4. The Electricity Act grants lawmakers the authority to conduct oversight and regulatory functions over the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) through dedicated Committees on Power in the Senate and House of Representatives.

5. The Act empowers states, companies, and individuals to participate in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution activities, promoting decentralization and diversification of the power sector.

6. States are given the ability to regulate their own electricity markets by issuing licenses to private investors for the operation of mini-grids and power plants within their respective states. However, interstate and transnational electricity distribution is excluded.

7. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is empowered to regulate and oversee the electricity sector within Nigeria, ensuring compliance with set standards and promoting fair competition.
