Business / The Other Guy by Eduwalter(m): 2:57pm On Jan 23, 2018
THE OTHER GUY
You know sometimes I do sit down and think about the regret of that other guy that decided to continue with his undergraduate studies in Harvard when the others decided to drop out from Harvard and pursue their dream of making facebook one of the biggest brand in the world. Though he has made millions in the ICT world and always said he has no regret continuing his Harvard education, he will never be like the others that grabbed the opportunity while it called.
We all remember the yori yori crooner, Bracket. In one of their best selling single they made mention of being three, all of a sudden they reduced to two. We all knew what happened to the two, who I do refer to as coke and fanta, they made name for themselves in the Nigerian music industry. So what happened to the other guy, he must have graduated from the university, completed his one year service to the country and maybe be doing some other this as the case may be or decided to try his luck again in the music scene or doing an 8 to 4 job now.
In business and everyday life, opportunity is the key. Making use of these opportunities as they come your way is what differentiates an individual working so hard and another working very smart. That other guy must have neglected the call when Zukerberg called; he allowed a single opportunity that would have placed him among the top billionaires in the world slip away. . The mistake still termed the 400 million dollars mistake.
That other guy in the bracket circle would have waited for the right time. He could have had more faith in the group he formed with his friends. He would have believed in the possibility of their dreams, he would have listened to pleads of his friends to stay out and actualize their dreams of being in the best musical group in the East of the Nigeria.
That other guy may be me, that other guy may be you. You never can tell what made that other guy changed his mind days, months before hitting the jackpot. Life can be funny sometimes especially if you are that other guy, you got to look at yourself as the unfortunate one, the one that was not destined to be in the top. You will tend to hate whatever that made you drop from the group at the dying minute.
That other guy may be the lucky one at the end of the day, let us consider the case of tuface idibia in the plantashiun boyz group, that other guy may have seen the right opportunity and decided to grab it with open hands, that other guy may have been the stumbling block in the group and his exit became a blessing in disguise. The keyword in life and business is utilizing OPPORTUNITIES as they come and waiting patiently living a positive life as you watch the outcome of the opportunity grow.

Romance / Bride For Sale by Eduwalter(m): 9:42am On Jan 12, 2018
This bride price issue in recent times has been of much concern to every reasonable adult. There have been many debates about it both on social media and in youths public gathering. The bride price in igbo land is a symbol of respect and pride to the husband as it is believed that once a man is able to fulfill this, he have proved to his in-law that he is financially, emotionally and physically ready for marriage. The bride price in igbo land ranges from as low as 25 naira in some community to as high as 150,000 naira in other community. There's this argument in the favor of high bride price that it makes a man respect and value the wife, most men see a high bride price as a means of exploitation especially if the groom is a rich dude. The parents of the bride will always stick to the word tradition and umunna when fishing out the long list like a bet9ja ticket. It is becoming so worrisome that most young boys in their mid 20 and 30 always lose interest when topics relating to marriage is raised.
If bride price especially the high bride price as claimed by most families is a tradition in the community, are we not suppose to adjust tradition as times change, please am not saying that bride price should be out of the picture. What is the essence of us being human if we cannot adjust to common change.
Will it not be of best interest for the government to intervene in the issue of marriage bride price. There should be a way to regulate the amount paid by the groom in taking a lady as a wife. Most people will argue against this, telling you that government has no business with tradition.. Are you serious thinking about that? Have we forgotten so soon that the kingship of igbo land has always been left for the gods to appoint and whosoever the gods appoint will be given the ofor as a symbol of power. In present times, the kings depend on government for certificate of office and if the government does it issue a certificate of office to any of these kings, such king will not be recognized. The reason for that is to check some of the excess of these kings. If the government can control the kingship and getting it right sometimes, I think we should allow the legislative arm of the government to deliberate on the high rate of bride price paid in some community and come out with a standard price which families will charge their prospective in-laws .
Most families will explain how they suffered to train their child in the University and how they want you to cherish their daughters. What a lame excuse. Is it not your responsibility as a father to train your child academically, physically and spiritually? Is the groom suppose to bear the cost of a father carrying out his fatherly responsibility? If all grooms bore the cost of the father carrying out his fatherly responsibility, who will now pay the groom for taking care of the daughter for the rest of her life when he is married to your daughter. For love and cherish as some persons will claim, a wife beater will always remain a wife beater. In fact it will be hell for the bride if a wife beater and an abuser end up paying high to marry you. He will make sure that your body remit all those money he used to take you as a wife.
Bride price is a tradition that will always remain in igbo land but fathers will got to be reasonable about it. You giving out your daughter for marriage and not selling her out as a property.

Politics / Prayer For Yusuf Buhari by Eduwalter(m): 3:09pm On Dec 28, 2017
I still don't understand why people including those that I know are literates will ever compare Yusuf buhari's accident to the killing of all the first son in the land of Egypt.
Let us not forget that the young man in question is just like every other Nigerian from a rich family who is privileged to afford most of the good things of this life. The accident would have not made news if he is not a member of the first family.
Though some Nigerians will join FFK in making such miserable comparison, it will not make us better Christians, it will only make us hypocrites that always pray for the downfall of their neighbors.
In the spirit of the Xmas, we as Christians should learn how to love our neighbors, friends as well as our enemies because that is what the New Testament teaches us. We as Nigerians should pray for the first family in a time like this, pray for the speedy recovery of the president son.
If we keep politicising everything including the life of a youth, we will end up being the way that we are in many years to come.
I therefore use this medium to wish a speedy recovery to the president son.
Get well soon Yusuf Buhari

Politics / Rochas Madness Got To Stop by Eduwalter(m): 3:44pm On Dec 07, 2017
THIS MADNESSS GOT TO STOP
Waking up on the 5th of December 2017, I was filled with joy not because I always felt that way each morning when I wake up from sleep but because I woke up realising that I will be going for my final clearance as a corps member (Presently serving in Girls Secondary School Alor). I was thinking a whole lot of things that morning, first among them are my family which I have hardly seen since I left for service and secondly how I will like to spend the beginning of the year in the beautiful city of owerri, which in recent times I have adopted as my base. That joy was there till I decided to check my twitter account to know the trend in Twitter Nigeria and know the latest in the
# EndSARS thread.
(Rochas Okorocha, Commissioner of Happiness) that was the trend that day. I started reading the news to know the relationship between the two concepts. I realised that not only has Rochas done what he has been known for in recent times (Nepotism), he has created a ministry, which is not only alien to the Nigerian Society but to the best of my opinion is not needed in the current governmental setting in Imo State.
As a first year student of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, I witnessed the campign/Election that made Rochas become the Caretaker of the Douglas house and the announcement of his victory led to a high celebration in Imo state both by Imolite and Residents. Having known Rochas (though not personal) from his days as a Senior Special Adviser to the former President Olusegun Obasanjo, I was among those that were in high spirit when he won the seat to manage the Douglas House I Owerri.
Events in recent times have not only shown that the end always justify the means, it have also proved to Nigerians that not all philanthropist are humanitarian, some are just calculated political actions. The actions of Rochas starting from the xmas tree that was worth about 600 million Naira to the erection of status of Jacob Zuma (who has not only dragged the economy of South Africa to recession but in recent times has been linked to a controversial businessman in South Africa) has not only been a waste to the monthly allocation received by Imo state from the federal Purse but have shown the extent to which Rochas can exhibit his comic character to the public. The creation of the office of the commissioner of happiness and purpose fufillment also proved to all Imolite that Rochas is a can of worm which imolites will continue to endure till 2019.

It was a moment of jubilation after some inmates awaiting trial were freed at the Enugu high court complex as five of them who had spent five years in prison were discharged and acquitted of a crime they said they did not commit.

According to Chijioke Okibe, one of the freed men told him that their journey started since 2013 when they were detained by Enugu SARS at their cell for allegedly killing a young asthmatic boy but that it happened that one of the inmates was tortured by SARS men which led to his death

Five of them were as a result in ASA rated for five years but were discharged for want of diligent prosecution by Hon. justice CI Nwobodo yesterday 29/11/17...

The difference is that British citizens live way above poverty line , they careless how much goes in the welfare of the monarchy. On the other hand you know the story in Nigeria.

Bro I understand the state of the economy here in Nigeria but that does not mean that we have to dump our tradition. The Benin monarch has been here before the coming of the British. We got to respect that tradition.

Shall we start questioning wasteful expenditure in this Country?

What does this King contribute to the GDP of Nigeria??

What exactly is his function other than sitting and sleeping comfortably in a well furnished palace while Edo residents wallow in the abyss of penury??

Nigeria is a peculiar state with peculiar problems so we need strong approach if indeed we crave for developments.

This is not a problem. This is the king of the ancient city of Benin and you should just respect him for that. How many time have you questioned the economic implications of the British monarch, I wonder y this one is your headache.

Career / Brain Drain In Quantity Surveying Practice In Nigeria by Eduwalter(m): 8:18am On Oct 18, 2017
Brain drain is a general term use to describe the general exit of skilled individuals from the country to other countries which they suspect to be more beneficial to their career growth. In an article I wrote in 2014, I divided brain drain into two namely, geographical brain drain and occupational brain drain. In a profession like Quantity Surveying especially in a country like Nigeria, occupational brain is the most experienced type of brain drain.

Occupational brain drain in this context can be seen as the movement of graduates of a particular discipline to another during their build up to their career. Quantity surveying practice in Nigeria can be traced back to the mid 1960's when few Nigeria QS from abroad came back to the country to kick off the career and thus the creation of the professional body NIQS.

The profession over the years has been growing both in numerical strength and in their services to the clients. The same cannot be said for the number of graduates who wants to take a career in the profession. Most QS graduates in Nigeria unlike their colleague in sisters profession in the built environment switch to other profession and career choices which most of the time is not in line with the construction industry. Many factors are to be blamed for this ill practice among the younger generation, some of them include
1. Low remuneration by employers, which is a general practice among Nigeria employers, though it seems the worst case scenario is that of young QS working in a private firm.
2. Lack of the basic skills as a result of the lesson learnt from lecturers
3. The pressure to succeed associated with the present day youths.
4. Generational gap between the QS's in Nigeria
5.Lucrative offer of other career.

Most QS especially the elderly ones whom have been in the game for a very long time may not understand the implications of this actions by the younger generations of QS, but they have implications and some of them which includes massive decrease in the numerical strength of professionals in the profession in years to come, the ratio of a qs to the project on ground will be low marking the architects and civil engineers taking over the jobs of QS in no distant time. Another implications of this is number of quacks that will be seen in the profession in years to come.

This occupational brain drain can be arrested if and only if the professional body can be sincere to themselves and do the right thing at the right time. One of the ways to control the exodus is to state an approved pay which can at least take care the needs of an average Nigerian in this present economic dispensation. Another way to control this especially in the area of QS education is for NBTE and NUC to carry out supervision on lectures employed by most institution offering QS. Elderly QS can also close the generational gap that presently exist in the profession by understanding the trend in the industry (ICT) and try to embrace it and also the younger generation should humbly learn the skills from older generation of QS as it have been proven that QS profession gets better and easier as the years of experience increases..
