MAKU – WHY THIS IGNOBLE VENTURE

We read with a sense of pity the story credited to the Hon. Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, denying the verifiable achievements of His Excellency, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola SAN, the Governor of Lagos State.

On one hand we feel great pity that Mr. Maku has within a short time lost touch with the ethics of Journalism which emphasizes accuracy, objectivity and facts. On the other hand, we pity the country if the man with the status of Hon. Minister of Information can descend so low as to misinform the world with such impunity.

Although his reason for such inflammatory remarks is still hard to discern, he would have done himself and the nation much good by limiting himself to his brief rather than dabbling into issues he knows next to nothing about.

In an assignment such as Ministerial briefing, as Lagos State had just done while marking the 6th anniversary of His Excellency, all Mr. Maku would have done in his remarks was to concentrate more on the achievements of the Federal government if there is any and if there was nothing to report ( as is clear from his vituperation) he could still have done himself a world of good by keeping quiet (as journalism dictates) than exposing himself to such ridicule through the unguarded statement credited to him.

One is, however not perturbed by his behaviour since it has become his stock in trade going by the way of his earlier outburst on the National Assembly for which he later had to apologize when the House cautioned him.

We believe that if Mr. Maku had taken time to research into some of Fashola’s performance in the areas of Power, Agriculture, Transportation, Housing, Health care delivery, Education, Sport, etc for which the government has received many accolades even from PDP leaders, his submission would have been better moderated as a communicator.

The issue of Environmental Sanitation raised by him betrays his understanding of the pedestal for good governance in any society. It becomes apparent that the Hon. Minister was befuddled by the state of development in Lagos, the nation’s former capital that had been left to “rot away” but which the BRF administration is taking to higher heights.

That the BRT buses run on federal government roads is quite laughable. One may wish to ask that since the capital moved to Abuja, who has been maintaining most of the infrastructure left behind by the Federal Government. The questions are why has the Lagos – Ibadan road becoming daunting to the federal government and why has the federal government failed to replicate the BRT system in Abuja or all over the country.

Perhaps Mr. Maku should have taken a trip to Lagos to see the on-going transformation in the landscape of the State through the expansion of the Lagos –Badagry expressway into a 10-Lane highway with Light rail and BRT lanes, the 39km Eti-Osa -Lekki - Epe Express road, the recently commissioned cable -stayed bridge linking Lekki and Ikoyi communities, the on-going expansion of Mile 12-Ikorodu road, the greater attention to water transportation, the infrastructural facilities being provided all over Lagos and several other people-oriented programmes, before concluding erroneously that Fashola has not done anything in Lagos.

Recently His Excellency, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was hosted alongside the former US President, Mr. Bill Clinton at the commissioning of the Eko Atlantic City where President Jonathan pledged that the Federal Government will replicate the project in other parts of the country and yet Fashola has done nothing.

The Hon. Minister should know that democracy is not about playing politics with facts. Also journalism does not approve of people giving judgment based on personal interests. The fact that we did not allow Maku to take credit for our project in Lagos in the name of “Good Governance Tour” does give him the latitude to attempt to discredit a performing governor who continues to receive accolades from across the nation and internationally.

The Lagos State Government

Fashola is working, Lagos is working.

The minister of finance is seeking approval for a loan.

The weekly meeting of the Executive Council of the Federation, FEC, holding on Wednesday will discuss a memo to be presented by the Minister of Finance and Coordination for the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, seeking the approval by members for Nigeria to take another $300 million (N47 billion) loan from the African Development Bank, ADB.

PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the loan facility would be utilised for the development of the transport sector, including the completion of the East-West Road project in the Niger-Delta region as well as for the ongoing economic governance reform programme in the country.

The federal government had already indicated its willingness to take loans to complete ongoing road projects.

The meeting is also expected to deliberate the on the Mid-term Report review and the First National Implementation Plan 2010 to 2013 of the Nigeria Vision 20:2020 Economic Transformation Blueprint to be presented by the Chairman, National Planning Commission, Shamsudeen Usman; who would also solicit members approval of Nigeria’s Presidency of the Leading Group on Innovative Financing for Development.

During the meeting, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Akinwunmi Adesina is expected to present a memorandum to propose the ratification of President Goodluck Jonathan’s anticipatory approval of the draft National Fertiliser Bill 2013, while Minister of Women Affairs, Zainab Maina, would brief the Council on the outcome of the 57th session of the UN Commission on the Status of women at the UN Headquarters, held in New York in March 2013.

The Minister of Power, Chinedo Nebo, who would be briefing the Council on the progress and challenges facing his ministry, would also present a memorandum seeking the approval of the Council for the award of contract for the supply of Hitachi Generator Special tools to Jebba Hydro Electric PLC.

According to the draft agenda sighted by our reporter, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe, is expected to also brief the Council on the achievements and challenges of his ministry

1MCN: The achievements of Fashola in Lag is self-evident. So I dont think Labran should have used such a puerile flippancy to deride or water down the streaks of Fashola.
But however, I dont think Fashola and GEJ are on the same pedestal. Office of the Gov of Lagos state cant be compared with the most powerful office in the African continent. The challenges and the interests are parallel.
Then, we're talking about Fashola's 6yrs in office against GEJ's 2yrs. I think they dont add very well. Maybe we would need a comprehensive score card of Fashola's 2yrs in office too so we can better compare notes (putting other factors into consideration though).
Finally, I want to let some Lagosians here on NL remember that after ABJ Lag is the second state with the highest Federal govt interest and presence. When Fed govt does a project in Lag Fashola takes the glory. Well, insofar as the people get better live, the glory can go to anyone for all I care. But I think GEJ has done for Lagos more in this 2yrs than most other presidents.
God Bless Nigeria and Nigerians

Apart from their lousy, old, neglected and crumbling infrastructures that we maintain with our money because of their incompetency and lack of sense of duty, what FG projects are you talking about?

Shameless liar, Ikorodu road is a federal road and also maintained by FERMA. LASG used to forward bills to FG for refunds whenever it intervenes in fixing it although they are now begging to take over the road because of the BRT it operates there.

Ikorodu Road - Lagos, FG On Warpath Again

The Lagos State Government yesterday asked the Federal Government to order the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to desist from plans to commence the rehabilitation of Ikorodu Road.

It said the road which had been properly ceded to it under the administration of former President Olusegun Obaasanjo.

The state's Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, issued the warning in a statement, asking FERMA "to concentrate on other federal roads begging for attention across all the local councils the state."

He explained that the planned rehabilitation "can only be construed as an undue interference which will only amount to a duplication of efforts and a waste of resources especially as there are other federal roads in critical state begging for attention across the state."http://allafrica.com/stories/201301310480.html

2. The FG roads in Lagos are all old roads with nothing to do with GEJ or any PDP administration ever.

3. Under GEJ, the minister of finance, who is in charge of the federal purse, is Igbo. The Chief of Army Staff, the number one defender of the nation, is Igbo. The minister of aviation, power, health, etc are all Igbos. These are very powerful portfolios. To cap it all, the secretary to govt of the federation is Igbo. From all indications, GEJ is the head but Igbos are running the show. So if we go the SENTIMENTS line, Igbos are running the show and are better off with GEJ.

And of what relevance are these positions to day to day realities on the ground? How many projects and social services have they delivered or commissioned?

I want us to try where we're most likely to get a break. The situation became precarious with the death of Yaradua. Had Yaradua been alive and completed his tenure, the presidency would have moved down south and the Igbos would have been in contention for the seat. Unfortunately, he died and his deputy who is from the south took over. Now, it's more precarious because it's most unlikely for the presidency to move from one southerner to another. But i guess some Igbo leaders are just looking at how things will pan out before they decide on their next political move hence the need to support JOnathan hoping that he would hand over to a S-easterner.

How do you reconcile both positions?

We all know this calculation has nothing to do with realistic political calculations, strategies, tactics and offensive, it's purely emotional, sentimental and regional affinity based which carries no weight in the grand scheme of things in Nigeria where folks from other parts of the country make strong political calculations, map out realistic strategies and play for keeps.

Ibo people reacts to everything with emotions and sentiments instead of tact, strategies and realistic moves and objectives. Emotions and sentiments like what you stated up there took you to war instead of realistic goals and strategies, emotions and sentiments don't win wars, but realistic calculations, well thought out strategies and ultimately real power and superior weapons does.

Running after GEJ based on some irrelevant kinship sentiments is nothing but tribal or regional emotions and sentiments that carries no realistic weight on the political battle field.

Even after GEJ, do you have any strong political base to contest nationally? Have you groomed good and credible leaders to sell to the rest of Nigeria? And since you can not win any elections without strong support from the other regions in Nigeria, what's your political relationship like with these regions and what have you done to reach out to the North and the SW? Instead of reaching out, you alienate both regions at will as if your island can stand and rule alone based on your emotions and sentiments.

You are yet to take your stand politically in Nigeria simply because you are not ready to play serious political games, you don't have credible political fighters and no strong political alliances beyond your borders and ultimately, you are yet to educate your people about the advantages you stand to gain by reaching out to other people instead of looking at them as your enemies.

GEJ doesn't have the political capital and goodwill to sell to the rest of Nigeria or force any candidate on the rest of Nigeria talk less one from the East, it's just not going to happen.

Look outside your window and see the good out there, it's not always the doom and gloom you weigh yourself down with perpetually...

The statement credited to the one of the chieftains criminally claimed during a visit to Enugu by the President that the South East Nigeria has benefited immensely from the current government.

Well, I come from Imo State, the heart-beat of South East Nigeria and I am absolutely non-partisan since I am neither a card-carrying member of any political party nor do I intend to run for elective position in 2015.

Having cleared the political cobwebs of doubts regarding where my allegiance or loyalty lies, let me say that the South East has not received any developmental projects to justify the 'drunken' and phantom claim by the 'emergency contractors' in the Peoples Democratic Party's national secretariat in Abuja that the South East is favored by the current government.

As someone with my heart, mind and spirit domiciled in the most rural and neglected communities in Imo State, let me say that I felt intellectually insulted by that statement and has for the avoidance of any doubt decided to write to correct the false claim that came from the infantile imaginative and warped mind of the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party.

First, let me say that the only visible proof of whether anything has happened by way of infrastructure in the South East in the last two years or not is the much talked about second Niger Bridge.

First, I am prepared to give President Jonathan a little bit of breathing space till the end of this year to see if any concrete construction work would have commenced regarding the much awaited second Niger Bridge. This is because President Jonathan inherited this 'heritage of contrived lies' on the second Niger Bridge from the Olusegun Obasanjo-led regime which spent 8 years without doing any project for the benefit of the South East Nigerians.

Most compatriots in the South East still view the 8-year wasted regime of Olusegun Obasanjo as one of the worst because according to them, Obasanjo looked at the South East from the perspective of a people he defeated during the 30-month civil war and so the people need to be further punished.

But Dr.Jonathan [who has cleverly adopted two Igbo names - Ebele and Azikiwe] has little time to prove to the South East people, I mean genuine patriots of South East and not the loud-mouthed political contractors, that as citizens, South East Nigerians deserve equitable development and infrastructure similar to what other geopolitical zones have gained.

Jonathan must build the second Niger bridge and deliver quality and durable legacy to millions of South East Nigerians to have collective sense of belonging in the project Nigeria. The current President must not be guided by selfish political ambition of 2015 to deliver half-baked second Niger Bridge just so that he can win the votes of the South East people.

The President must view the second Niger Bridge as a priority project because many distinguished experts have reported that the existing Niger Bridge is on the verge of collapse and if that happens, then the entire South East Nigeria will be cut off from the rest of Corporate Nigeria.

Geological researchers have provided compelling need for President Jonathan to act fast before the calamity of collapse of the only Niger Bridge could occur.

>Vincent Kalu wrote that “the maintenance of the bridge has been irregular, in spite of the warning on its imminent collapse....”

After the war, Dumez Construction reconstructed the bridge at an estimated cost of 1.5 million pounds.

Vincent Kalu also stated thus; “Since then there has not been any major overhaul or maintenance until the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2005, when, under the Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, contract was awarded to Setraco Nig Ltd to repair the bridge. The contract was valued about N2 billion. The metal contract signpost for the repairs, which is still visible at the Asaba end of the bridge, reads: Federal Republic of Nigeria: Total rehabilitation/strengthening the existing Niger Bridge with contract No. 5798. The client was Federal Ministry of Works, Mabushi, Abuja, while the contractor was Setraco Nig Ltd, Plot 192, Makeni Street, Wuse Zone 6, Abuja.”

Most people know that this so-called repairs were never done.

This government must make hay while the sun shines by constructing the second Niger Bridge without any further delay.
Politics / Re: The Toll Booths At The New Ikoyi Link Bridge.pics by ekoilee: 12:25am On Jun 04, 2013
MiloRambaldi:

To start with the toll is N250/300.

Let's flow with the notion that the Lekki folks are rich (most are actually not rich, just medium income people - U see a whole lot more Kias, Hyundais, Toyotas than Bentleys and Rolls). In any case they are already paying more to the gov't in the form of higher taxes. Those with high income pay higher % tax - and who says the higher tax they pay is not the bulk of gov't tax revenue. So the 'double taxation' in the form of toll is not necessary as the folks in Lekki are already funding development in other areas.

Besides tolling affects the numerous less rich who also live in the Lekki-Epe areas.

Also, those in Lekki need good roads like those in Mushin, etc. Most of the residential roads there are bad also -they don't get a disproportionate amount of good roads. It's just that any small gov't infrastructure to the area like the repair the main Lekki access to the axis or a bridge to alleviate traffic congestion must be used as reason to further fleece the people in the form of tolls. .

The tolling of main expressway to the area is unwarranted.

And bridges are not necessarily luxuries. The 3MB for example is not a luxury but a necessity. Perhaps the FG should toll 3MB, after all they are alternate roads.

Emotions and sentiments wont get us to the promise land, but strategies and prudent financial investments surely will.

It's no news that we don't have every kobo we need to build every inch of road in the state talk less enough to develop other infrastructures like schools, colleges, hospitals, clinics, transportation, human and capital development and with this obvious realities, we have to get creative with what we have, we have to recycle our resources to get what we want without accumulating needless .

1. We need to understand one thing and it is the fact that this bridge is not only a very needed infrastructure in terms of practical solution to chronic traffic problems in the area but also a business investment on behalf of the people of Lagos state.

2. We need to also understand that the money collected from Lagosians driving on this bridge belongs to the same Lagosians to be spent on other infrastructures like the ones I listed earlier including that bad road you complain about, that 4thMB we need so badly but too expensive, the metro rail we are working on, our schools and hospitals and so on.

3. This bridge is not taking anything away from anybody unduly since there are free alternatives all over the place so if money from this bridge built your road in Okokomaiko, it means other people paid to build your road.

4. Bottom line, we are recycling our money to get what we want in the most prudent and debt free way possible and using money from this bridge to build so many infrastructures all over the state is better than taxing you to do it or borrowing money to do it..

We've found a creative way to take care of our needs and progress accordingly together. Let's not cry and keep shooting ourselves over what's really not killing anybody but making money for us to take care of us, there are free alternatives
