Science/Technology / Tottenham News: Harry Kane Relishing Premier League Golden Boot Battle Following by elotidesigns: 10:19am On Dec 07, 2018
The World Cup Golden Boot is giving the Spurs star plenty of confidence as he finds himself chasing another league scoring crown

Tottenham star Harry Kane is using his World Cup success to inspire him to winning the Premier League Golden Boot once again.

Kane has scored in three consecutive league games to move onto nine goals, just one behind top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The 25-year-old won back-to-back Premier League Golden Boots in 2015-16 and 2016-17, while Kane was also the top scorer at the World Cup in Russia.

And the forward believes his ability to deliver for England on the game’s biggest stage gave him confidence to get through tough spells at Spurs.

“When you’ve done it on the biggest stage of them all, the World Cup, you can look back and gain confidence from that,” he told reporters.

“If you’re going through a spell where you’re not scoring, a couple of games here and there, you know you can do it at the highest level. You guys know what I’m like now.

“I know what I can achieve and I’ll work as hard as I can to keep reaching goals and reaching more.”

Kane has scored 13 goals in all competitions this season, having netted 76 across the past two campaigns.

“Since I’ve been in the Premier League, it has had some of the best strikers in the world,” Kane said.

“Aubameyang is at the top end at the moment. There’s quite a few on eight or nine goals so it’s important for me to carry on doing what I’m doing.

Politics / Utomi To Osinbajo: Delta Apc’ll Consume Your Pastoral, Professorial Dignity by elotidesigns: 9:10am On Dec 07, 2018
By Perez Brisibe

UGHELLI – GOVERNORSHIP candidate of the Chief Cyril Ogodo led faction of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Delta State, Prof Patrick Utomi, has described the recent peace meetings convened by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to find peace in the state chapter as a wasted exercise.
Prof. Pat Utomi

Osinbajo and fake news perfect definition of co-joined twins – Reno

The comment by Utomi is coming just as one of the leaders of the party in the state, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, warned that individuals such as Utomi and Hon Victor Ochei, should key into the direction of the discussions, if the party will be able to make progress.
Check this out As Abia hosts 3rd National Council on Niger Delta

Emerhor while speaking with Vanguard yesterday, said: “The efforts of the Vice President are geared towards uniting the party in Delta as a necessary step towards the common objective of leaders of both sides to deliver President Buhari and APC in Delta State in the 2019 elections.

“The discussions/negotiations centred on the recognition that, outside court judgement/order, the issues of candidates have been overtaken by time and/or INEC timetable.

“The attempt therefore is to find ways to compensate the side that may lose out on issues of candidates with appointments and share in government to engender some sense of a win win.”
Check this out PDP decries use of police, military in Rivers by-election

Utomi on his part, said: “You may have heard rumours about meetings with the Vice President. As I said clearly to the VP in the presence of all, the exercise was a waste of time. It was coming too late and wrongly motivated.

“As a friend of many years, I suggested to him that he was in danger of risking everything as a Pastor, Professor of Law and Civil Rights champion by allowing himself to be dragged into a collaboration in evil.

“The matters remain simple . What Jones Erue and company did in Asaba on September 30 violates the Rule of Law and our country’s constitution. We are in court following due process to set that aside.

“Secondly, the body of the Party representing the majority of APC members led by the Cyril Ogodo Executive Committee which was properly sworn in by the National Chairman of the Party at the time, Chief John Oyegun nominated me Candidate.

“Following due process in court we expect to get Justice and claim the seat.”

Politics / 2019: Has Oshiomole Triumphed Over The Governors? by elotidesigns: 2:32pm On Dec 06, 2018
By Olayinka Ajayi

The recent exit of political protégées of Governors Rochas Okorocha and Ibikunle Amosun brought to a climax the upheaval that arose from the quest by the new leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC to enthrone internal party democracy in the ruling party.
Oshiomhole

Okorocha had vowed that Uche Nwosu, his son-in-law and until not too long ago, his chief of staff would be his successor on the platform of the APC. His vow, however, came to a bruising end last Tuesday when it emerged that he had ditched the party for Action Alliance, AA, a party founded by Okorocha about 15 years ago for his own presidential aspiration.

APC: You must take orders from me as CEO, Oshiomhole vibrates

The apparent humiliation of the Imo State governor was an exception in a political terrain that had nurtured governors to become semi-gods. In the majority of cases, outgoing governors like Okorocha and Amosun almost on their own chose their successors, albeit with some measure of political levelheadedness. The apparent failure of Okorocha to have his way, however, has been traced to what political stakeholders claim as taking his swagger to the extreme.

The developments in Imo and Ogun States have been traced to the change of orientation and enthronement of internal party democracy in the party.

The ‘uncommon anarchy’ in Akwa Ibom
Check this out Reno, NBS disagree over alleged report on 7.9m unemployed Nigerians under Buhari

The development alongside some other measures taken by the Adams Oshiomhole led national executive of the party are believed to have inspired the threats that were conceived against it.

Abuja based political analyst and publisher, Sufuyan Ojeifo observed that right from the outset of his interest in the chairmanship of the APC, Oshiomhole knew that his programmes of reform, which formed the major plank of his electioneering promises, would not only ruffle the feathers of some influential stakeholders but also break their backs.

“Some governors unsuccessfully mobilised for a no-confidence vote in Oshiomole. They also influenced the invitation by the Department of State Services (DSS) over the conduct of the governorship primary elections in some States. When the first two gambits failed, they resorted to the third option, which is to consistently make bribery allegations through some proxies,” he noted.

Dr. AbdulAzeez Olatunde, the spokesman of the party in Oyo State spoke in the same vein that the national chairman had helped through his efforts to stop the reign of impunity in the party.

“Don’t forget that we are in the thick of intense politicking where all manners of decorated lies are being thrown at the national chairman because of his intimidating character as a former labour leader with lots of accomplishments.”

Restructuring’ll guarantee equity, fairness, justice in Nigeria — Adebanjo, Bode George
Check this out Buhari: I’m not ‘Jubril, I’m Buhari, President makes mockery of critics

“The APC is unshakable. We are marching Nigeria away from the era of impunity,” he added.

Ojeifo asserts that Oshiomole has been uncompromising to the chagrin of his traducers who are doing a great job, stoking the fire of the war of allegations of bribe-taking.

“They have resorted to media propaganda, using their hirelings to disseminate the phantom amounts in millions of dollars that Oshiomhole allegedly received and added that their odious strategy is simple: “continue to assail the sensibilities of Nigerians with the lies so that, with time, they could pass off as truth.”

Several persons who spoke on this subject in Abuja said that Oshiomole’s staunch desire to stamp discipline in the APC should not be neglected arguing that the political class must learn to starve their selfish desires in the country while working on serving the collective good.

Meanwhile, Oshiomhole has also gotten significant encouragement from some party leaders including the National Leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu.

Speaking in an interview through his Media Adviser, Mr. Tunde Rahman, he stated that allegations such as the one against the APC chairman were bound untenable given that they came from those who lost out in the recent party primaries.

While Tinubu is backing Oshiomhole, there are many others including Osita Okechukwu, the director general of the Voice of Nigeria, VON who have taken up arms against Oshiomhole. In Delta State, there have also been allegations of unfair dealing by the party leadership in the conduct of the party’s internal primaries for all positions.

TRIBUTE: Tony Anenih: The end of an era

For Rotimi Fasan, a political columnist, things were always bound to end like this. He said that there are too many contending interests in the APC and there was no way any party chairman could satisfy one interest group without offending another.

“It was in a bid to satisfy one group at the expense of another that the former chair of the APC, John Odigie Oyegun, was made to bite the dust and pave way for Oshiomole. If Oshiomole would retain his position, it would not only be with the support of those who have him in their good book but how much stronger that support is than that of the governors’ group,’ Fasan observed.

He added that “In a sense, therefore, the battle between Oshiomole and the governors is a proxy war between Bola Tinubu and the governors opposed to his position in the APC. Oyegun lost his position mainly because he lost Tinubu’s trust. Oshiomole restored that trust but has in the process displeased others.”

Science/Technology / Verizon Is Launching RCS Chat On The Pixel 3 On December 6th by elotidesigns: 3:42pm On Dec 05, 2018
Verizon has confirmed to The Verge that it will be launching RCS Chat on the Pixel 3 and 3 XL on December 6th. Only those two phones on Verizon will have the feature, but the company tells me that it is “committed to bringing advanced messaging to other Verizon smartphones in the future.” In other words, the rollout for Chat on Verizon will probably be a little slow, but it’s still earlier than we were expecting. A few weeks ago, A Verizon executive indicated that support for Chat would come in “early 2019.”

RCS is the text-messaging standard set to replace SMS for Android phones — it supports features that you would expect from any text-messaging client, including typing indicators, high-resolution images and video, and better group chat. Unfortunately, it does not have another features that you’d want in a text-messaging client: end-to-end encryption for privacy.
Check this out Odeon defends £40 hi-tech cinema prices

RCS is also Google’s central strategy for offering a better messaging to Android users, in effect replacing Hangouts, its predecessors, and Allo. All of those text messaging apps (and the ones that came before them) had promising starts yet failed for reasons too numerous to get into here — but you can read all about the history if you like. Bottom line, Google is not trying to compete directly with the likes of iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger with its own app anymore. Instead, there’s Chat.

Verizon’s implementation of RCS Chat will be compatible with other carriers when they begin to roll it out as it’s based on the “Universal Profile.” Unfortunately, that support is starting to feel a little slow in coming. Google’s own cell phone service — Google Fi — doesn’t support it yet. Other carriers have implemented their own proprietary versions of RCS and have promised to update to the Universal Profile.
Check this out The 3D digital models taking the fashion industry by storm

Here’s Verizon’s statement:

Verizon and Google will be rolling out enhanced messaging (RCS) in the Messages app on Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL beginning this Thursday, December 6th. This messaging service brings, for example, typing indicators, very large group chats and the ability to transfer large files between the owners of these smartphones.

News of RCS coming to the Pixel 3 first showed up on Reddit, with what appears to be a training document for Verizon reps that states “Chat features only work if all members of a group chat have Chat features enabled. If any members are not enabled, the standard SMS/MMS service is the default.” Fortunately, it appears that Chat will work in the default Android Messages app, so you won’t have to use Verizon’s custom Messages+ texting app.

Bottom line: the Pixel 3 will support RCS soon, but whether or not you’ll actually be able to take advantage of the new features will depend on who you’re texting. Most important in the US, there have only been the vaguest of rumors that Apple is even considering supporting RCS on the iPhone.

Politics / 2019: Call for INEC chairman’s resignation, misplaced – Galadima, Ezekwesili’s r by elotidesigns: 9:12am On Dec 05, 2018
By Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor

Senior chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Delta State, were last night locked in a meeting with the minister of state, petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu to resolve issues that had for long divided the party.

Many feared killed as violence erupts in C/River, Buhari calls for calm

Last night’s meeting was a follow up to the Monday night meeting hosted by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo during which he tried to broker a truce between the Otega Emerhor tendency and the Omo-Agege/Ogboru tendency.

At the Monday meeting the vice-president was understood to have rued the crisis in the party and called for unity to be built upon the sharing of party positions and in any government that the party may form.

The vice-president who was flanked by Kachikwu and the immediate past governor of the state, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan first met with the Emerhor group that included three governorship aspirants, Chief Victor Ochei, Prof. Pat Utomi and Dr. Cairo Ojugboh. Other chieftains also followed the group into the meeting. However, a major development at the meeting was the refusal of Chief Hyacinth Enuha, a major party leader who had identified with Emerhor to go associate with his group during the interventions by the vice-president.

Enuha, a party grandee who was part of the Senator Francis Okpozo group before Emerhor joined could not be reached as at press time to confirm if he was still associating with the group.

Following the meeting with the Emerhor group, the vice-president also met with the Ogboru group. At the end of the meetings, Kachikwu was directed to host another meeting last night where sharing pattern would be drawn up.

If the talks go well, the two tendencies in the party would share the executive structure of the party down from the state level to the local level and also work out plans to share appointments that may come the way of the state chapter if the party wins the forthcoming elections.

A senior member of the party contacted on the development yesterday ahead of the meeting said: “So far so good it is going well until we have a final meeting, I won’t be able to speak with the press.”

Science/Technology / New Captain Marvel Trailer Stars Carol Danvers Fighting In Space by elotidesigns: 5:32pm On Dec 04, 2018
There are fewer than 100 days until Captain Marvel hits theaters, and Disney is already in full advertising blitz mode, debuting a new trailer for the movie tonight.

This marks the second trailer Marvel Studios has released for the movie, which is set to be released only a couple of months before Avengers 4. The first trailer teased Carol Danvers’ (Brie Larson) powers as Captain Marvel, a superhero who returns to Earth after years away. Unlike other films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel is a prequel of sorts. It’s not an origin story, but it does take place years before the events of Iron Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Incredible Hulk, and Thor.

Still, it’s safe to assume that some aspect of Captain Marvel will incorporate the events of Avengers: Infinity War. The end of Infinity War found Nick Fury sending out an urgent page to Captain Marvel following Thanos’ devastating snap, which erased half the universe’s population. Captain Marvel may be the only superhero left, alongside the original Avengers, who can help destroy Thanos once and for all.

Business / Cannabis Firm Confirms Investment Talks With Marlboro Maker by elotidesigns: 4:44pm On Dec 04, 2018
A woman holds a handful of marijuana flower buds, in Vancouver, Canada, on October, 17, 2018.

Altria, the maker of Marlboro cigarettes, is in talks with a Canadian cannabis producer over a potential investment in the firm.

Canada’s Cronos Group confirmed the discussions but said it had not yet reached an agreement.

It follows reports that Altria was in talks to acquire Cronos as it moves to diversify from traditional smokers.

Canada legalised recreational cannabis in October – the second country in the world to do so.

Cronos confirmed in a statement “it is engaged in discussions concerning a potential investment by Altria Group Inc. in Cronos Group.”

“No agreement has been reached with respect to any such transaction and there can be no assurance such discussions will lead to an investment or other transaction involving the companies.”

Several other companies around the world are pushing into the marijuana sector.

Corona beer owner Constellation Brands has said it would pour some $4bn (£3.1bn) into Canada’s top cannabis producer, Canopy Growth, in a deal marking the largest investment in the industry to date.

Tobacco firm Imperial Brands is investing in UK biotech company Oxford Cannabinoid Technologies, while a recent media report said Coca-Cola was in talks with a Canadian producer Aurora Cannabis about developing marijuana-infused beverages.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau campaigned to legalise cannabis, arguing laws criminalising its use were ineffective given Canadians are among the world’s heaviest users.

Cannabis possession first became a crime in Canada in 1923 but medical use has been legal since 2001.

Science/Technology / Google Call Screening Transcriptions Start Rolling Out To Pixel Owners by elotidesigns: 1:44pm On Dec 03, 2018
Google has started rolling out transcriptions for Android’s call screening service (via 9to5Google). The Call Screen feature uses Google Assistant to answer the phone on your behalf to screen calls from unknown numbers. The only way to see a conversation before was to witness it in real time — the new transcriptions save a copy for later viewing.

To find it, head into the Recent Calls section of the Phone app, find a call that Google’s screening service answered on your behalf, and select Call Details from the menu. If you have the latest update, you should be able to pick the See Transcript option. From here you’ll be able to read the transcript, as well as rate its quality.
Check this out Google's Alphabet gives up on rescue robots

Transcription support hasn’t rolled out to everyone just yet, but after Google confirmed the feature would be available before the end of the year, it’s unlikely to be long before all US Pixel owners get access. If you’re outside of the country then you might have to wait a little longer. For now, call screening is available exclusively in the US on Google’s first-party handsets, although Google’s @MadebyGoogle account has tweeted that the feature is expected to come to more countries and languages “in the future.”

Business / Asia Markets Rise After US And China Agree To Trade Truce by elotidesigns: 11:27am On Dec 03, 2018
US President Donald Trump, US Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin and members of their delegation hold a dinner meeting with China's President Xi Jinping and Chinese government representatives, at the end of the G20 Leaders' Summit in Buenos Aires, on December 01, 2018. -
Asian markets rose after the presidents of China and the US reached a temporary truce in their trade war.

At the G20 summit, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping agreed to halt new trade tariffs for 90 days to allow for talks.

An escalating trade war between the world’s two largest economies has weighed on markets generally.

The US and China have imposed billions of dollars of tariffs on one another’s goods, posing risks to global trade and the world economy.

In China, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index and Shanghai Composite were up more than 2% in early trading, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose more than 1%.

“I do not think market consensus is looking for very significant progress, this is a temporary truce,” Masamichi Adachi senior economist at JP Morgan in Japan said.

“Many people suspected that there may be a more disastrous outcome, this is definitely a relief.”

The US and China have been embroiled in a trade war this year which has seen the US hit China with tariffs on $250bn (£195.9bn) worth of goods since July, and China retaliate with duties on some $110bn of US goods over the same period.

Stakes were high at a meeting between President Trump and President Xi at last week’s G20 meeting in Argentina.

Failure to achieve a ceasefire would have seen tariffs on $200bn worth of Chinese goods rise from 10% to 25% at the start of next year, and would have opened the way for tariffs on additional Chinese goods.

Hopes of a breakthrough at the G20 had been undermined right before the meeting by comments from the US president.

President Trump said last week he was likely to go ahead with a planned tariff hike and reiterated his threats that the US could impose tariffs on the remaining $267bn of Chinese imports into the country.

Politics / NASS staff set for war over unpaid salaries, allowances, by elotidesigns: 9:25am On Dec 03, 2018
…to shut down NASS Tomorrow
By Henry Umoru
ABUJA-STAFF of the National Assembly are set for war with the Management as they have vowed to shut down the entire complex, thereby paralyzing both legislative and administrative activities over unpaid salaries and allowances.
Protesters at the National Assembly

The threat to literally put the National Assembly under lock and key was issued yesterday in Abuja by Staff of the National Assembly, under the aegis of Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN).

In a statement signed yesterday in Abuja by PASAN Secretary General, Comrade Suleiman Haruna, the group explained that the first phase of the protest will be the disruption of activities at the National Assembly between December 4 and 8, 2018.

Haruna who noted that the protest has become inevitable because there was the need to force the management of the National Assembly to know that they meant business in their demand for the immediate payment of their salaries and promotion arrears, said that the picketing of the National Assembly will commence between 8am and 2pm daily within the stipulated days.
Check this out Apapa congestion: Ambode flags off expansion of Orile tanker terminal

According to him, members of PASAN will ensure that nobody is allowed into the Assembly complex for any business, including legislative business, just as he insisted that the National Assembly management must accede to their demands on the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS).

The secretary who noted that the plan of action of members of the association became imperative due to the refusal of the Clerk to the National Assembly, Alhaji Mohammed Sani Omolori, to address the concerns of members in relation to salary and promotions arrears, stressed that the association has already issued a two-week ultimatum to the management to fulfill its demands or face strike action.

According to Haruna, the association resolved to urge: “The President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives to take urgent steps to nominate the would-be members of National Assembly Service Commission for appointment.
Check this out FG completes Ilorin - Jebba high way

“That all pending staff promotions and conversion letters be released with arrears due fully paid on or before December 31st.

Chairman of the Association, Bature Musa, also confirmed the decision of the association to force National Assembly management to listen to them, however assured that the planned picketing would go on as planned, unless the management of the National Assembly addresses their demands.

In October, over 80 legislative aides welcomed Senators and House of Representatives members back from their annual break with a protest at the National Assembly lobby.

The legislative aides who carried placards with various inscriptions, claimed they had not been paid salaries, Duty Tour Allowances (DTA) and other entitlements.

On his part, National Assembly Director, Information and Publications, Rawlins Agada, said that the payment of certain allowances was beyond management of National Assembly, adding, “The issue is of the payment of CONLESS is beyond management at this point. The management is not averse to the payment of the CONLESS because it has been factored into the 2018 budget.
Check this out West Ham sign striker Perez from Arsenal

“The challenge is the release of fund. It’s more like if you have a liability of N300,000 but all you have is N200,000, what do you do?

“I know that the management is in talk with the Executive over the issue but between last week and now, I don’t know what has happened but what us not disputable is that the management is willing to pay.

“The management believed that the what the workers are agitating for on the CONLESS is legitimate. Issues of promotion and others are what can equally be discussed.

“My appeal is that the Union should be patient for the outcome of the Legislature and the Executive over the issue and I believe that as soon as the funds are available, the workers would get their dues”.

“We are now able to identify this victim through the diligent work of the State Bureau of Investigation. The victim’s name is Lena Reyes-Geddes and she resided in Ohio,” Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said in a release shared on Facebook.

“The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office is very grateful to give our victim a name and peace to her family. We are also grateful for the State Bureau of Investigation for their help.”

On Oct. 2, Reyes-Geddes’ case was reopened by the Utah Department of Public Safety, who released a series of photos of the victim in hopes of encouraging anyone to come forward with information.

Shortly after, the Youngstown Police Department of Ohio received a phone call from a woman living in Mexico, claiming Reyes-Geddes was her sister, an official with the Utah State Bureau of Investigation explained in a news conference obtained by Fox 13 Now.

Given that Reyes-Geddes was originally from Mexico, but had been living in Ohio for two years at the time of her death, detectives decided to move forward with the tip.

Authorities were then able to positively identify Reyes-Geddes after receiving DNA samples from her sister and niece, who have not been named, on Nov. 9.

On April 8, 1998, Reyes-Geddes was expected to travel from her home in Austintown to Dallas, Texas. However, she never made it. It is believed that she was passing through Utah at the time of her death.

According to WKBN 27, police say her body was wrapped in plastic then placed in a sleeping bag after being covered in a piece of carpet. Her body was discovered by a passerby on the road.

Now that Reyes-Geddes has been identified police are now looking for her killer.

Reyes-Geddes’ husband Edward Geddes reported her missing — six months after her tragic death.

He later committed suicide in Nevada. At the time, police considered him a suspect, but now investigators are looking at additional suspects, the official with DPS explained in the news conference.

As for why the identification took so long, The Utah Department of Public Safety explained, Reyes-Geddes’ fingertips had been removed and there was nothing to compare her to in the database as her family didn’t live in the country.

While the investigation is far from over, Reyes-Geddes’ family is “very thankful they have answers now,” an official with the Utah Department of Public Safety explained in the news conference.

“That part is very rewarding to be able to give a family some closure.”

Politics / National Mosque: Igbo Muslims Grumbles Over Delay In Appointment Of Imam by elotidesigns: 1:05pm On Nov 30, 2018
Muslims of Igbo extraction have expressed disaffection against the delay in the appointment of an Igbo Imam for the National Mosque Abuja, as promised by the Sultan of Sokoto and the President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar Sa’ad III when the Murshid of the Mosque was appointed.

According to the group, The Sultan made the promise to erase any tribal attachment on the Imamship of the national institution, considering the fact that the three Imams under the Murshid are two Hausas and a Yoruba.

Speaking under a non-government organization, Igbo Muslim Forum (IMF), the Southeast Muslim faithful explained that when the promise was made, the Igbo Muslims were happy to be carried along by the Sultan in that regard. But it has been too long when the promise was supposed to have been fulfilled.

In a statement signed by the coordinator general and secretary of the forum, Suleman A. Afikpo and Dr. Muhammad Amaechi, respectively, they recalled recent convention convened in Abuja by the South East Muslims of Nigeria (SEMON) where some members of the Igbo Muslim Ummah expressed displeasure over the promise described by some as normal lip service. They said that the matter had become a subject of discussion at every forum of the organisation.

“The acquiescence of the President General of NSCIA, echoed further by his Secretary General, published in all the major Nigerian dailies after their meeting of the 6th Extended General Purpose Committee in October 9, 2017, was one pronouncement that placed smile on the faces of every Igbo Muslim.

“In readiness, we converged in a general meeting that screened and produced three eligible scholars from amongst us for the duty. Follow-up letter dated 16th April 2018, with Reference no: IMF/NSCIA/18/01 was disseminated”, the statement noted.

“For over a year now, there has not been any response to our letter nor the said imamate position filled. While we wait in anticipation, we grieve and grumble at the neglect being meted on us. We humbly want to use this medium to remind the authorities in charge, lest our case be held under administrative redtopism.”

Science/Technology / Amazon Comprehend Medical Makes Sense Of Scattered Healthcare Data | Health by elotidesigns: 11:32am On Nov 30, 2018
Amazon on Tuesday announced Amazon Comprehend Medical, a language processing service that lets users gather information — such as a patient’s medical condition and medication dosage, strength and frequency — from sources including doctors’ notes, clinical trial reports, hospital admission notes and patient health records.

Most health and patient data — such as medical notes, prescriptions, audio interview transcripts, and pathology and radiology reports — currently is stored as unstructured medical text. Identifying this information either requires skilled medical coders to handle data entry, or teams of developers to write custom code and rules to extract it automatically.
Blessing and Curse

Healthcare providers and insurers currently have to write and maintain a set of customized medical coding classification rules for natural language software. A change to a single classification code name can have a ripple effect on dozens of hard-coded rules, all of which then must be updated, or data will be missed or classified incorrectly.

Amazon Comprehend Medical lets users create models that reliably understand this medical information, vastly improving medical coding.

“The amount of regulation and regulatory requirements in medicine is both a blessing and a curse,” noted Ray Wang, principal analyst at Constellation Research.

“The curse is managing the disparate sets of information that are not always complete or entered in the right way,” he told TechNewsWorld. “The blessing is, this information can lead to a lot of insights for organizations to plan the next best action. This includes identifying medical coding errors, potential harmful drug interactions, epidemiological patterns, opportunities to prevent new illnesses, and billing malpractice and quality assurance.”

Data interoperability long has been a problem for the healthcare industry. Amazon, Alphabet, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and Salesforce this summer announced support for the
Fast Healthcare Interoperability Foundation (FHIR), which aims to create a common set of standards for the exchange of healthcare information .
Automating the Process

Amazon Comprehend Medical lets developers identify the key common types of medical information automatically, with high accuracy, and without having to write lots of custom rules. It can identify medical conditions, anatomic terms, medications, and details of medical tests, treatments and procedures.

“The ability to use Comprehend to extract and categorize unstructured medical data is significant, because it also enables personal information to be removed,” said Rebecca Wettemann, VP of research at Nucleus Research.

“Researchers and physicians can share and analyze data sets that were simply not practical to analyze as unstructured patient-specific notes,” she told TechNewsWorld. “More data is better when understanding diagnoses, trying new drugs or treatments, or evaluating existing treatments.”
Check this out Google is building subscription tools into AMP

Amazon Comprehend Medical uses advanced machine learning models. It offers two APIs developers can integrate into existing workflows and applications with a few lines of code. The APIs are Medical Named Entity and Relationship Extraction (NERe) and Protected Health Information Data Extraction and Identification (PHId).

Partners include the following organizations:

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
Roche Diagnostics
Pricewaterhouse Coopers
Deloitte (ConvergeHEALTH)

Data Privacy and Security

Amazon Comprehend Medical is HIPAA-eligible. It quickly can identify protected health information (PHI) such as name, age and medical record number, so it can be used to create applications that securely process, maintain and transmit PHI, according to Amazon. It adheres to General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) standards.

The service
is covered under Amazon Web Services’ HIPAA eligibility and BAA.

Developers can implement data privacy and security solutions by extracting and then identifying relevant patient identifiers as described in HIPAA’s Safe Harbor method of de-identification. Further, the service does not store or save any customer data.

However, data security is a primary concern, noted Michael Jude, program manager at Stratecast/Frost & Sullivan.
Check this out Eight people charged with running a multimillion-dollar online ad scam

“Data in motion is far less secure than data at rest,” he told TechNewsWorld. “In order to use these Amazon capabiities, data must be moved. Amazon will need to take pains to ensure the security of any patient data they have access to.”
What the Service Will Cost

Amazon Comprehend Medical charges are levied per block of 100 characters of analyzed text.

NERe API users pay one (US) cent per block and PHId API users pay 14 cents per block. Users pay only for what they use, and there are no minimum fees or upfront commitments.

Amazon Comprehend Medical offers a free tier for 25K units of text, or 25,000 characters, for the first three months when customers use both APIs.

“Anything that improves the delivery of healthcare will decrease costs and improve outcomes,” Jude said. “This [service] could help do both.”

Politics / Bayelsa: PDP, APC Flex Muscles Over Alaibe, Other’s Defection by elotidesigns: 10:13am On Nov 30, 2018
By Emem Idio

BAYELSA State is being primed for testy contests in the 2019 polls. A swathe of defections across the two leading political parties-ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and All Progressives Congress, APC, is altering calculations for the polls.
Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, (left), and former Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, and former Presidential Adviser on Amnesty, Timi Alaibe, during the formal return of the latter back to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at Government House Yenegoa, recently.

PDP female aspirant recounts ordeal in Benue legislative primary

The bulk of the defections are in favour of the PDP, a development the APC has downplayed as insignificant and incapable of hurting its chances at the polls.

One of the APC top shots who left for the PDP is its former chairman, Chief Tiwei Orunimighe, who was also a close ally of former governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, the leader of the party in the state.

Orunimighe, who has since been appointed the Special Adviser to Governor Seriake Dickson on Oil and Gas, led some APC chieftains in an exodus to the PDP. The defectors include former ex-militant leader Africanus Ukparisia aka, General Africa; President Muhammadu Buhari’s representative in Ogbia in the 2015 general election, Chief Orifie Ene and his supporters; former Commissioner for Environment, Mr Victor Akenge; Chief Diekivie Okologhbo; Chief Alatei Maxwell; Mr Amangala Ani; Chief Nkoi Gita; Barr Mike Amiekumo; and Mr Cleopas Johnbull among others.

Orunimighie’s defection was not much of a surprise to many unlike his co-travellers because he fell out with Chief Sylva after dragging the party to court following his suspension for alleged anti-party activities.

Chief Ndutimi Alaibe, also bid farewell a month later, a former managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, and former special adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, PAP also defected.

Alaibe, whose political pedigree in the oil rich state is well known was accompanied by former federal and state lawmakers, Hon Michael Epengule,Nelson Belief, B.Z. Onniye and Ebamua Empere.

They were also followed by former Secretary to Bayelsa State Government, Alabo Gideon Ekeuwei, one-time Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Kemi Prefa, former commissioner for information, Mr. Nathan Egba, former chairman of Sagbama Local Government Area, Barnabas Edure; and former Executive Secretary, SUBEB, Rhodesia Whyte.

Why we left APC, Alaibe, others

Speaking on why he left the APC, Alaibe said: “We are coming back to support you so you can continue to invest in other areas including what you have already done in the health sector like the diagnostic centre where a former president came to be diagnosed.

“We are happy to be back. By tradition every child that goes out and meets danger, returns back home. We went out there and we saw things that were not palatable, in fact we saw danger and decided to run back home and interestingly, we have a governor that is kind enough to receive use.’’

Also, Orunimiye said he and others dumped the APC because it lacked vision and mission and described the leader of the party in the state as a businessman rather than a politician.

We are better positioned to win coming polls — APC

However, the APC appears unperturbed with the gale of defections and has been boasting that it is now better positioned and formidable going into the general elections.

The state Organising Secretary of the APC, Tonye Okio, said the APC was not losing sleep over the defections of Alaibe and others. He said: “This is a welcome development as Alaibe had been PDP at night and APC by day.”

Science/Technology / Audi’s E-tron GT Concept Is A 590-horsepower Electric Sedan Powered By Porsche by elotidesigns: 4:34pm On Nov 29, 2018
Just two months after the debut of its first electric car, the E-Tron SUV, Audi has announced a new EV called the E-Tron GT Concept. It’s a sleek sedan that gets its electric power from the same drivetrain and battery platform that will be in Porsche’s first EV, the Taycan.

The concept was unveiled at this week’s LA Auto Show, and will go on sale in just two years, with deliveries starting in early 2021, according to Audi. No pricing has been set.

Sitting on 22-inch wheels, the E-Tron GT takes power from a 90kWh battery pack and puts it into two electric motors (one on each axle). In total, that drivetrain creates 434 kilowatts of power, or 590 horsepower. That’s good enough to go from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.4 seconds, according to Audi.
"Audi is using the same electric tech that powers Porsche’s Taycan EV"

Audi is estimating a range of about 248 miles for the E-Tron GT, according to Europe’s new Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) standards. While WLTP is more stringent than the previous standards that automakers used to predict range, its estimates are still a bit rosier than what the EPA generates, meaning real-world range performance could wind up a bit short of that mark.
Check this out Government names trial areas for 'full fibre' broadband

Since it shares Porsche’s Taycan tech, the E-Tron GT will also feature very fast charging. The 800-volt battery system is able to go from nearly dead to 80 percent charged in 20 minutes, faster than basically anything else currently on the market — including Tesla’s Superchargers.

While it’s beyond passé at this point to call a car a “Tesla Killer,” announcements like the E-Tron GT concept serve as stark reminders that traditional automakers have a wave of EVs on the horizon. By the time the GT concept becomes reality, Audi will have the E-Tron crossover as well as a sportback version on the road, and the German automaker’s first efforts in this field will be joined by similar products from Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and many more.

Politics / Confirmation Of Olukoyede As EFCC Scribe Divides Senate by elotidesigns: 2:25pm On Nov 29, 2018
By Henry Umoru
THE Senate yesterday was sharply divided over the confirmation of the nomination of Mr. Olanipekun Olukoyede as the Secretary of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
The Red Chamber

But the Senate at the end of the controversy that ensured, however, confirmed Olukayode as the scribe of EFCC.
The Senate had on Tuesday, put his confirmation on hold till yesterday.

It resolved to stand down his confirmation after a member of the Senate Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes, Isa Misau (PDP, Bauchi Central) accused committee members of preparing a report without the consent of others, even as he complained that only three of eight members signed the endorsement page of the report.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, had directed the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Chukwuka Utazi (PDP, Enugu North) and members of the committee to meet and deliberate on the issue and re-present the report yesterday.

Olukoyede, an indigene of Ekiti State, who is the current Chief of Staff to the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, was nominated as Secretary to the Commission in a letter by President Buhari, which was dated September 10, 2018 and addressed to the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki.

The lawmakers, however, confirmed the EFCC secretary amid altercations between the Chairman of the committee, Chukwuka Utazi and other members.
Prior to the confirmation, Senator Misau, who raised a point of order, accusing the chairman of disobeying the resolution made by the Senate yesterday, said that he and other members were still not invited to any meeting.

Politics / House Of Asembly Crisis: APC, PDP In Big War For A-ibom’s Soul by elotidesigns: 9:37am On Nov 28, 2018
Yesterday’s violent encounter in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly was the latest indicator of the contention for supremacy between the country’s dominant political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC.

By Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor

Akwa Ibom, arguably the country’s highest recipient of federal allocations alongside Rivers State has been in the sights of the APC. The state further came into play in early August when the immediate past governor of the state, Senator Godswill Akpabio announced his defection from the PDP to the APC.

2019: APC’s NWC axes Okorocha, Amosun’s men
Udom-Akpabio

When he defected, Akpabio went along with two members of the House of Assembly and two commissioners one of whom is his blood brother.

Since that uncommon defection, the state has increasingly been the focus of political brinkmanship with the opposition APC in the state revving its acts with a determination to upset the incumbent PDP governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

Emmanuel, a former banker, remarkably, had before now abided in the political shadows of his former mentor, Akpabio. The defection of the former governor and emergence of Nsima Ekere, managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC as the governorship candidate of the APC in the state has meant that Emmanuel has his job of winning re-election well cut out. It is a challenge that the governor has remarkably taken with aplomb to the surprise of those who saw his easy disposition and deficit in image laundering as vulnerable spots to brighten the APC’s chances.

Yesterday’s clash in the House of Assembly was inevitably , a direct outcome of the contention by the different political alliances.
Check this out Osun gov poll: Don’t make our daughter dormant in your govt, monarch tells aspirant

The face-off took shape after the lawmaker representing Akpabio’s state constituency, Nse Ntuen and another lawmaker, Gabriel Toby joined him on August 8 when he defected to the APC.

Before then, the only member of the APC in the House, Asuqwo Archibong representing Urue /Owsong/Oruko state constituency had defected from the PDP.

Following his defection, Ntuen, had last September gone to court to protect his seat as he feared that the PDP dominated House of Assembly could latch on to constitutional provisions to declare his seat vacant.

That fear was perceptible given constitutional provisions that a member of a legislative house could lose his seat if he defects from the party platform he used for election , the only proviso being that his or her original party is factionalised.

The Speaker of the House, Onofiok Luke, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State were set as defendants in the suit.

Speaker Luke had also filed a counter-claim, seeking for “a declaration that having defected from the PDP to APC before the expiration of the tenure of four years for which he was elected to serve, Ntuen has lost his seat in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

He also requested “An order of court directing Ituen to vacate the Itu State Constituency seat in the state House of Assembly with immediate effect The prayers included

“An order of court restraining the Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly or any other person acting on his behalf (including the staff of the House of Assembly) from further recognising Ituen as a member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.
Check this out Tricycle operators protest alleged extortion in Borno

“An order of court directing INEC to immediately conduct a bye-election to fill the vacant seat of Itu State Constituency at the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.”

On Wednesday, November 14, the Federal High Court, Uyo gave its judgment in which it rejected all the reliefs sought by Ntuen and granted all the counter claims sought by the Speaker.

As news of the judgment settled in Uyo, it caused apprehension. Meanwhile, three other members of the House had also defected from the PDP, swelling the ranks of the APC in the House to five in the 26 member House.

Following the court order, the House had on Monday, November 19 sat and Speaker Luke acted on the order of the court and declared Ntuen’s seat vacant. The Speaker also declared the seats of the four others who had defected vacant.

The action of the Speaker was bemoaned by the APC which alleged that the Speaker rushed to act in order to pre-empt a stay of execution of the order of the Federal High Court.

However, the governor’s special assistant on legal matters, Ndem Andem, in an interview on Inspiration 105.9 FM, Uyo said that as at the time of the declaration of the seats vacant on Monday, November 19 that the stay of execution had not been obtained by Ntuen.

“Stay of execution cannot be granted on an action that has already been carried out,” Barrister Andem said.

“The seat has already been deemed vacant, and stay of execution means that the status quo remains. What is the status quo?
Check this out A-Court awards N600,000 against PDP

“The status quo is that the seats had on Monday been declared vacant as provided by the constitution of our country. Mr Idongesit Ituen, and his co-travellers remain former members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, except a higher court gives a contrary ruling in their favour ,” he added.

The APC claimed that the House which does not traditionally seat on Monday sat in order to pre-empt the stay of execution.

The developments in Akwa Ibom have unsurprisingly raised apprehension about the prospect of peace in the forthcoming General Election. An associate of Mr. Ekere told Vanguard yesterday that at least 10 other members of the House were set to defect and that Mr. Luke was only acting to frustrate the inevitable.

“10 members of the House are set to join the five who have defected,” he said yesterday as he accused members of the state executive council of orchestrating the violence in the House yesterday.

That claim is also countered by insinuations from PDP stakeholders who accused the APC of working towards the agenda of stoking violence as a way of making the state ungovernable so that the governorship election would be postponed to allow for the concentration of forces that would allow the APC make headway.

The two commissioners, who also defected from the PDP, included the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mr Victor Antai and Commissioner for Labour, Productivity and Manpower Planning, Mr Ibanga Akpabio.

Sports / Chelsea News: I Learned The Most In My Career From Lampard – Drogba by elotidesigns: 3:03pm On Nov 27, 2018
Speaking at a Chelsea fan event in Tokyo, the Ivorian highlighted the midfielder as the player he learned most from at Stamford Bridge

Didier Drogba has singled out former Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard out as one of the biggest influences on his career.

Drogba played with Lampard for eight years at Stamford Bridge, which culminated in Champions League triumph in 2012.

The two set each other up on 36 occasions in the Premier League, still the highest combined figure for goals and assists between two players in the English top flight.

“There’s one [player] that I’m going to put a bit more in front because most of my goals came from him, it’s Frank Lampard,” Drogba said.

“And also because every day after training we were staying on the pitch trying to practice, trying to create some exercises because the ones we did a few days ago were becoming too easy.

“So, we were trying to bring in new exercises and that’s how we progressed and challenged each other to score goals, to create assists and for me I learned a lot from him.”

Business / Thomas Cook Still Suffering From Heatwave by elotidesigns: 11:42am On Nov 27, 2018
Swimmers on a beach in Spain

Thomas Cook has warned that its annual profits are set to be about £30m lower than expected, its second profit warning in two months.

Earnings at its tour operator unit were £88m lower in the year to September, as people delayed booking holidays because of the prolonged heatwave at home.

It also said its bookings for this winter were 3% down on last year and suspended its dividend.

Shares in the company dropped by 28% when the markets opened.

Chief executive Peter Fankhauser said it had been a “disappointing year”.

He added: “The UK was particularly hard hit with very high levels of promotional activity coming on top of an already competitive market for holidays to Spain.

“Looking ahead, we must learn the lessons from 2018 and go into the new year focused on where we can make a difference to customers in our core holiday offering.”

The heatwave and mild winter weather are also having an impact on bookings for winter holidays, with bookings for the 2018-19 season in continental Europe down by 2%.

Fewer people have arranged holidays for the Canary Islands, with holidaymakers switching to cheaper trips to Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia instead.

Thomas Cook’s underlying earnings will be £250m to the end of September, £58m lower than in 2017.

Additional charges, including disruption to flights, were partly responsible for this decline, the company said.

Despite the slump in holiday bookings, the company’s airline business recorded profit growth of £35m and its future bookings are 11% ahead of last year.

Sales of holidays to its own-brand hotels were up by 15%.

Science/Technology / Former White House CIO Theresa Payton: ‘there Are Grave Concerns About Election by elotidesigns: 10:29am On Nov 27, 2018
Theresa Payton, CEO of
Fortalice Solutions, is one of the most influential experts on cybersecurity and IT strategy in the United States. She is an authority on Internet security, data breaches and fraud mitigation.

She served as the first female chief information officer at the White House, overseeing IT operations for President George W. Bush and his staff.

With the U.S. midterm elections fast approaching, both Payton’s observations about the current cybersecurity threat level and her advice about shoring up the nation’s defenses carry special weight.
theresa payton ceo fortalice solutions

In this exclusive interview, she also shares her views on social networking, privacy, and the changing playing field for women who aspire to leadership roles in technology.

TechNewsWorld: What is the chief cyberthreat to the upcoming midterm elections?

Theresa Payton: My biggest worry and concern is that citizens will not trust election results and that the election process will lose legitimacy. We know that the Department of Homeland Security, working with state election officials, have raced against the clock to secure voting systems. Our U.S. intelligence agencies have repeatedly been on the record stating there is no evidence that cybercriminals modified or deleted any votes in 2016.

The next area of concern is for the communications, contacts, and digital campaigns of candidates being broken into and doxed. While the news focuses on securing the votes and the voter databases of the midterm elections, there is not a lot of attention on whether or not campaigns take threats targeting their campaigns seriously. Nothing would hit closer to home for a candidate than if their election was hacked and they lost — or won.

“Cyber” is certainly a buzzword, but it’s not a word without meaning. With the onslaught of breaches, candidates should be laser-focused on cybersecurity.

TNW: What should federal officials do to shore up election security? What should state and local governments do? Where does the buck stop?

Payton: It’s crucial that elected officials on the left and right not politicize an issue in the short term that will have grave long-term consequences for national security.

Defensively, we need to harden our election infrastructure at the local level. This is the responsibility of the Department of Homeland Security.

DHS needs to continue to work at the local level with state election officials, but also to provide much more robust cybersecurity capabilities for protection and detection at the campaign level.

We also need to be sure that the intelligence and homeland security community is effectively sharing information and tools, techniques and tactics.

TNW: How serious are concerns that election interference might be caused by tampering with back-end election systems? What can federal agencies do to address the problems of outdated voting equipment, inadequate election-verification procedures, and other potential vulnerabilities? Is there an argument to be made for some level of mandatory federal oversight of state and local voter systems?

Payton: There are grave concerns about election interference and the race to secure them, globally, is under way. The idea that voter databases could be seeded with falsified data or modified has been around for decades, but the technical know-how and motive has caught up with that idea. Election officials in a race towards automation and efficiency may have helped criminals along, but it’s not too late if we act now.

Today, there are entire countries totally relying on electronic voting: Brazil, since 2000, has employed electronic voting machines, and in 2010 had 135 million electronic voters. India had 380 million electronic voters for its Parliament election in 2004.

It is easy to see why electronic voting is the wave of the future and how the United States could model its own voting system after these countries. It’s faster, cheaper and more accessible for those with disabilities. Also, would you miss the experience of, or the reporting of, the every-election-day headline of “Long Lines at the Polls Today”? Probably not. That is certainly less painful than a recount though.

We are headed towards electronic voting as the sole system we use despite these facts:

.“The U.S. intelligence community developed substantial evidence that state websites or voter registration
systems in seven states were compromised by Russian-backed covert operatives prior to the 2016 election — but never told the states involved, according to multiple U.S. officials,” NBC News reported earlier this year.
. Russia hacked the Democratic National Committee’s emails with the intention to “interfere with the U.S. election process,” according to the director of national intelligence, James R. Clapper Jr., and the Department of Homeland Security.
. As far as we know, despite the scans and alarm bells, no outside entity has changed any records in the registration database.
.Scams such as “text your vote” were more prevalent than ever, and will increase as electronic voting becomes more widespread.

The good news is our government took this very seriously. Prior to the midterm elections, the Department of Homeland Security offered state election officials “cyber hygiene scans” to remotely search for vulnerabilities in election systems. They also conducted threat briefings and onsite reviews, as well as released a memo of “best practices” — guidance how best to secure their voter databases.

Some have called for more federal oversight and moving towards a more restrictive security model, but the states own the voting process. Providing year-round briefings from DHS, FBI, CIA, and NSA would prove to be very helpful over time.

Also, we have to remember elections are decentralized. Sometimes there is security in obscurity. Each state in our country, plus the District of Columbia, run their own election operations, including voter databases. A hostile nation state could not feasibly wipe out each system with one wave of their magic wand.

How we vote, though, is just one-way our elections could be compromised. Another concern going forward must be disruption of Internet traffic, as we saw occurred just days before the last presidential election cycle on Oct. 21st, 2016, when the Mirai botnet crippled part of the Internet for hours.
Check this out 5 Important Healthcare Cloud Security Factors to Weigh | Cybersecurity

A massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacked a host server causing major disruptions to some of the most highly visited websites in the United States. The attack was in two waves, first on the East Coast and then on the West Coast.

As our country votes on Election Day in different time zones, and polling stations close at different times, the similarity is chilling.

However, we need everyone to turn out to vote. The focus on bolstering our election security defenses is reassuring. What we know is the warning signs are there. As we move towards the future, and focus on creating and protecting a new system to collect our votes, we need to protect the one we already have.

Two things you can be sure of after this year’s election: Eventually, every vote you cast in a United States election will be electronic, and one of those elections will be hacked. No doubt about it. But the recount in 2016 in Wisconsin reminds us all why we need a backup.

TNW: What are some ways candidates and campaigns can shore up their cybersecurity without draining their war chests? What are some of the practices they should implement in the very early days? A campaign that’s very secure ultimately might lose due to lack of visibility. How can campaigns strike the right balance?

Payton: Never before have campaigns collected so much essential information that would be lucrative to so many cybercriminals. Credit card numbers, bank account information, addresses, online identities. The assets go on and on, and cybercriminals are just like bank robbers in the old days: They follow the money.

That is why in today’s day and age, if you are on a campaign, whether it be state, national or local, you need to be as vigilant about protecting data as any business. Otherwise, you will lose your customers — also known as constituents and voters.

Anyone on a tight budget can follow these guidelines to protect their campaign assets:

1.Make it as hard as possible on cybercriminals by separating donor information details onto a completely separate domain name with separate user IDs and passwords from the campaign. For example, your campaign domain might be VoteSallySue.com, but donor details would be stored at MustProtectDetails.com.
2.Using that same practice, run all of your internal communications on a domain name that’s not the campaign name — i.e., email addresses should not be henry@VoteSallySue.com but rather henry@MustProtectDetails.com. Increase the level of protection for internal messages by using encrypted messaging platforms for internal communications, such as Signal or Threema.
3. Also, be sure to encrypt all of your campaign’s donor data. We have yet to hear a report of a campaign’s donor data being hacked and used for identity theft, but we will — of that I am sure. It would be too lucrative not to try. Once it is hacked, it will be hard to restore confidence in your operation. Just ask any major retailer, bank or organization who has recently been hacked, and they will tell you. I don’t even need to use their names, you know the headlines.
4.Train technology and campaign staff to spot spearphishing emails and scams. Oh, sure, you think everyone knows not to “click on that link,” but recent studies illustrate doing just that is the No. 1 cause of breaches among employees.
5.Another safeguard that raises the bar in terms of security is implementing two-factor authentication wherever feasible. When you use a platform that employs two-factor authentication, don’t you feel safer? Possibly annoyed, as well, but certainly reassured that the extra step has been taken to secure your data. Don’t you want the electorate to feel the same way?
6.Finally, post a privacy policy that’s easy to read, easy to find, and you’ll find voters have more confidence in just your agenda.

TNW: How well — or poorly — have Facebook, Twitter, Google and other tech companies addressed the problems that surfaced in 2016?

Payton: I was encouraged to hear that with less than three weeks to go for the U.S. mid-terms, that Facebook has stood up a war room to combat social media community manipulation as the world heads into elections this fall and winter.

They have also said they have war-gamed a number of scenarios to ensure their team is better prepared for elections around the globe. Much is at stake, so the fact that Facebook also integrated the apps they have acquired — such as WhatsApp and Instagram — into the mix of the war room is a great idea.

If I were to give them advice, I would suggest that another great step to take would be to create a way to physically embed representatives from law enforcement, other social media companies — including Twitter, Linkedin and Google — and to allow election officials around the globe to have a “red phone” access to the war room.

TNW: What are some of the most pressing cybersecurity problems facing social networks, apart from their use as political tools?

Payton: The ability to change their business and moderator models, in real time, to morph quickly to shut down fake personas, fake ads, and fake messaging promoting political espionage, even if it means higher expenses and loss of revenue. Social media companies have made a lot of progress since the 2016 presidential elections and claims of global-wide election meddling, but the criminals have changed tactics and it’s harder to spot them.

On the heels of the August 2018 news that Microsoft seized six domains that Russian Internet trolls planned to use for political espionage phishing attacks around the same time that Facebook deactivated 652 fake accounts and pages tied to misinformation campaigns, Alex Stamos, the former Facebook security chief, posted an essay in Lawfare, and stated that it was “too late to protect the 2018 elections.”

TNW: What role should the government play in protecting citizens’ privacy online?

Payton: As the Internet evolves, laws and regulations must change more rapidly to reflect societal issues and problems created by new types of behavior taking place online. Never before has the world had access to statements, pictures, video and criticism by millions of individuals who are not public figures.
Check this out Three criticised over £117 iPhone X monthly deal

The Internet provides us with places to document our lives, thoughts and preferences online, and then holds that material for an indefinite period of time — long after we might have outgrown our own postings.

It also provides places where we can criticize our bosses, local building contractors, or polluters.

This digital diary of our lives leaves tattered pages of our past that we may forget about because we cannot see them, but they could be collected, collated, and used to judge us or discriminate against us without due process. The government needs to think ahead and determine which laws need to be enacted to protect our right to opt in and out of privacy features and to own our digital lives and footprints.

TNW: What is your opinion of Europe’s “right to be forgotten” law? Do you think a similar law would make sense in the United States?

Payton: The European Union’s “right to be forgotten” sets an interesting precedent, not just for its member countries but for citizens around the world. It is too early to know what the long-term impacts of the EU’s decision to enforce a “right to be forgotten” with technology companies will be. However, it’s a safe bet the law will evolve and not disappear.

There are concerns that giving you or organizations more control of their Internet identity, under a “right to be forgotten” clause, could lead to [censorship] of the Internet. Free-speech advocates around the globe are concerned that the lack of court precedent and the gray areas of the EU law could lead to pressure for all tech companies to remove results across the globe, delinking news stories and other information upon an individual’s request.

A quick history lesson of how this law came about: A Spanish citizen filed a complaint with Spain’s Data Protection Agency and indicated that Google Spain and Google Inc. had violated his privacy rights by posting an auction notice that his home was repossessed. The matter was resolved years earlier but since “delete is never really delete” and “the Internet never forgets,” the personal data about his financial matters haunted his reputation online.

He requested that Google Spain and Google Inc. be required to remove the old news so it would not show up in search engine results. The Spanish court system reviewed the case and referred it to the European Union’s Court of Justice.

Here is an excerpt of what the May 2014
ruling of the EU Court said:

“On the ‘Right to be Forgotten’: Individuals have the right — under certain conditions — to ask search engines to remove links with personal information about them. This applies where the information is inaccurate, inadequate, irrelevant or excessive for the purposes of the data processing… . A case-by-case assessment is needed considering the type of information in question, its sensitivity for the individual’s private life and the interest of the public in having access to that information. The role the person requesting the deletion plays in public life might also be relevant.”

In the U.S., implementing a federal law might be tempting, but the challenge is that the ability to comply with the law will be complex and expensive. This could mean that the next startup will be crushed under compliance and therefore innovation and startups will die before they can get launched.

However, we do need a central place of advocacy and a form of a consumer privacy bill of rights. We have remedies to address issues but it’s a complex web of laws that apply to the Internet. Technology changes society faster than the law can react, so U.S. laws relating to the Internet will always lag behind.

We have a Better Business Bureau to help us with bad business experiences. We have the FTC and FCC to assist us with commerce and communications. Individuals need an advocacy group to appeal to, and for assistance in navigating online defamation, reputational risk, and an opportunity to scrub their online persona.

TNW: What is your attitude toward social networking? What’s your advice to others regarding the trustworthiness of social networks?

Payton: Social networking can offer us amazing ways to stay in touch with colleagues, friends and loved ones. It’s a personal decision as to how involved you are online, how many platforms you interact with, and how much of your life that you digitally record or transact online.

Politics / I Never Said I’ll Probe Fayose — FAYEMI by elotidesigns: 9:10am On Nov 27, 2018
Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, yesterday, clarified his stance on the fate of his predecessor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose.
Fayemi and Fayose

Governor Fayemi spoke with State House correspondents after a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Fielding questions on whether he would probe his predecessor, Fayemi explained that there was never a time he said he would probe Mr Fayose.

He said: “Well, I am sure I have never said anything about a probe and I do not say anything about probe.

“Looking into books is the duty of any new governor, you need to know what you found in place, and I just talked about visitation panel into the education sector in the state.

“There are other sectors in the state, and it will be remiss of me not to check what we found when we came into office and share that with the citizens of the state.

“It is just accountability, not probe. I am not the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, I am not ICPC, there are institutions that are charged with the responsibility to do that and it’s entirely up to them if they want to probe the governor or not.

“It is not my business, I leave Fayose to God, I have said that before.”

Speaking on the state of education, Mr Fayemi said that Ekiti had a tradition of being the intellectual capital of the country but it seemed to have lost that edge lately.

He said: “Before now, Ekiti used to be the leading state in terms of school enrollment in the country but the latest figures we received from the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, makes it clear that we are lagging far behind.

“We have moved from 96 per cent enrolment in the entire country to about 45 per cent meaning that about 55 per cent of our school-age children are out of school.

“That is unacceptable in a state like Ekiti and we need to find out what has happened between 2014 and 2018 leading to this appalling figure in terms of school enrolment.”

Politics / Oshiomhole Debunks PDP Allegations Against Buhari by elotidesigns: 1:13pm On Nov 26, 2018
Receives Shekarau into APC
As Ganduje declares Kwankwansinya dead in Kano
By Abdulmumin Murtala
Kano – The national chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has rebuffed claims of highhandedness against the ruling administration saying that President Olusegun Obasanjo introduced the phenomenon.

Oshiomhole spoke in Kano on Sunday when he received erstwhile governor of the state, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau and other defectors into the ruling party.

“They wrote a letter to the UN, who will carry it there? Was it not President Olusegun Obasanjo that introduced the politics of ‘do or die’ under the PDP? But we thank God we went through but we did not die” he said.

Condemning those who left the APC for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP the APC national chairman said they left the APC and joined what he described as the ‘trickiticians’ in the PDP.

Oshiomhole said the APC is moving to the “Next Level”, and that never again would Nigeria be governed by opportunists who he claimed looted the country’s treasury for 16 years.

“What they didn’t do in 16 years cannot be fixed in three and a half years” he declared in response to accusations of poor performance by the opposition.

“Today Buhari has good 16 million votes after the primary elections and that is just a tip of the ice bag and Nigeria would never go back to the era of those who looted the nation dry” he said.

Speaking on former Shekarau’s defection, Oshiomhole said the former governor was a good asset to Nigeria who would contribute more towards the development of the country.

He assured the defectors that the APC as a ruling party would treat them equally as bonafide members which reflected the decision of the party to give the Kano Central Senatorial ticket to Shekarau.

Also speaking at the occasion, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje reiterated that Kano state will give President Muhammadu Buhari more than five million votes in the 2019 elections declaring that “APC is the only party in Kano State”.

He added that very soon the state shall host a rally for about 55 members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement who he said would soon join the APC adding that Kwankwasiyya is no more.

He declared that the APC has taken away more than 50% of the PDP in Kano as Shekarau joins APC.

In his speech, Shekarau explained that his coming to APC was history repeating itself as in 2014 he had reasons to step aside and today he has even greater reasons to step back to APC.

“we are very proud members of APC” he added.
Also present at the event was the Jigawa State governor Alhaji Muhammadu Badaru and other APC stalwarts in the North West.

Politics / Why Igbo Leaders Are Backing Atiku Against Buhari – Prof. ABC Nwosu by elotidesigns: 9:07am On Nov 26, 2018
Professor ABC Nwosu, former Minister of Health, in this interview, speaks on the state of the polity, the recent summit of Igbo leaders in Enugu as he expresses his doubts on the ability of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to conduct credible General Election next year.

By Dennis Agbo

What is your observation of the polity?

Nigeria went into problems the moment it took six months to appoint ministers. The APC government wasted six months taking briefings from civil servants instead of appointing ministers who are to fine-tune and execute policies, programmes and projects for the welfare of the people. The world’s financial systems that hate uncertainties and ambiguities reacted leading to the foreign exchange confusion of that period.
•Prof. ABC Nwosu

2019: Atiku won’t disappoint, Obasanjo assures Nigerians

Beloved Nigerians got foreign exchange at N200 to a dollar while the not so beloved Nigerians got it at N500 per dollar. There were no ministers to react to this volatility and so the Central Bank of Nigeria had to step in to now bring it to N360 per dollar, yet the APC government refused to accept blame for its inability to govern in the first six months after taking power.

Rather they blamed the fall in oil prices and the governments of the previous 16 years. Any government that refuses to accept responsibility, preferring to blame everybody but itself, is a recipe for downturn in the economy and parlous state of the nation. That is my view. The suffering in the land is palpable and everybody feels it but government prefers to advise us that it takes more than four years to correct the mess of the last 60 years since independence. That is nonsensical.

How do you react to some former PDP members now in APC saying that PDP did nothing in 16 years it was in power?

For me this is proof that government is not interested in fighting corruption but is more determined to remain in power. For example, how can an uncommon governor that had eight years of uncommon transformation of his state indict himself that he did nothing in eight years, which is half of the sixteen years? Also consider the super ministers of the APC government, who were PDP governors before they turned to APC in the evening of their tenures.
Check this out PVC: Ohaneze appeals to citizens to register

What are these people running from? Is it not that the APC government will not use its attack dog, the EFCC on them? I therefore don’t take them seriously; they are only protecting their tails from being chewed off by EFCC. I don’t think they should be taken seriously because the achievements of the PDP in the 16 years are clear.

What are these achievements sir?

The first in my opinion is that PDP snatched democracy from the tyrannical regime of late General Sani Abacha and has sustained it till date including handing over to the opposition without the full results being announced and without going to court.

The Electoral Act and reforms of today are to the credit of late President Umaru Yar’Adua who remains the only President who declared his assets publicly as required by transparency. Every other declaration is shrouded in some mago-mago.

The PDP is waiting for the APC to launch its campaign on integrity so that everything shall come out in the open. For example, the APC chairman as governor, came back with Mr. President from United States and announced that they were told by the State Department that a minister had $6 billion in an account. Some of us wondered: $6,000 million in a single account by one minister? Up till now they are yet to name any minister preferring a generalized term of looters in order to continue their propaganda and deceit of Nigerians to continue in power because they have found that to remain in power, corruption propaganda is the best deceit policy.

Back to achievements of the PDP. Nigerians have the right and freedom of speech and movement, and President Goodluck Jonathan was the most abused and vilified Nigerian president. Let people use the kind of words they used in abusing Jonathan on this present regime. The Unity Fountain in Abuja ceased to function as converging arena for Bring Back Our Girls, Occupy Nigeria etc. Let people go there now and meet Police dogs and armoured tanks unless you are in favour of this regime. The experience of BBOG and Our Mumu Don Do in this regime are enough examples that we have rapidly descended to the state of un-freedom. This should be the greatest challenge of Nigeria.
Check this out 2,030 corps members begin orientation in Adamawa

Other achievements of PDP such as mobile telephones and massive growth in ICT sector, debt relief, the modernization of the airports, the Bank reforms, railway etc, speak for themselves, ditto for the institutions for the prevention and fight against corruption, ICPC, EFCC, Public Procurement Act, Treasury Single Account, TSA. Need I say more? When the campaigns start PDP will list what it has done and challenge the APC to list what it has done other than blaming everybody.

The PDP convention in Port Harcourt has been applauded as one of the best. Was the emergence of Atiku anticipated?

The emergence of Atiku or any of the aspirants was not anticipated. You will recall that events before the convention frightened some Nigerians into thinking that PDP will go to Port Harcourt and disintegrate but PDP demonstrated attributes of a great political party. First, after surviving the Senator Ali Modu Sheriff scare, it re-invented itself and went to Port Harcourt to conduct one of the best primaries ever seen in Nigeria. Second, as soon as Atiku emerged the winner the other eleven aspirants simultaneously went and congratulated him and the party is uniting to fight the coming election.

You may wish to compare what happened in PDP and what happened and still happening in APC.

What’s your reaction to the emergence of Mr. Peter Obi as Atiku’s running mate?

It is Atiku’s prerogative to choose a running mate and he did so. I think that the declaration of Igbo leaders at Nike Lake Hotel on Wednesday 14th November, 2018 is clear evidence that Ndigbo appreciate Atiku Abubakar and the PDP for assuaging the feelings of the people of the South East. The message from that one-day summit was loud and very clear.
Check this out Vanguard holds Economic Forum Series on MSMEs today

The simple truth nationally and internationally is that the choice of Mr. Peter Obi has been well received and generally Ndigbo are very unhappy at the way the APC government has completely excluded them especially in the security agencies in the past four years. Even Igbo ministers know this. So, the endorsement of Atiku/Obi by Ndigbo should come as no surprise to nobody especially given the 97 – 5 percent policy of this administration.

Why did you say that the choice of Mr. Peter Obi has been well received?

He is young, he is knowledgeable, he is competent and he is humble. His achievements as two-term governor of Anambra State speak volumes of his competence and point to him as a round peg in a round hole for a country that is seeking to come out of recession; for a country that is seeking massive creation of jobs; for a government that badly needs prudence in government expenditure; for a government that wants to fight corruption effectively by plugging the expenditure leakages, etc. Peter Obi’s knowledge of the economy, business both big and small and management of public funds will serve this country well.

Do you have confidence in the ability of INEC to conduct credible elections in February 2019?

No. I am too scared of what happened in Osun to believe so. After the elections were completed and the results for all the local governments published in the dailies, it was decided by INEC that cancelled votes made the election inconclusive. Who cancelled the votes? Osun had too many unanswered questions for me.

We must have less presence of the coercive agencies of state at polling points. Thirdly, citizens should be able to take pictures of infractions of the Electoral process during voting. INEC insisting that cameras at voting centres are to check vote buying doesn’t stand up to logic. It simply looks like they don’t want infractions recorded and results also photographed to stop electoral malpractices.

Science/Technology / Let’s Create A TV Show To Fix Silicon Valley | Tech Buzz by elotidesigns: 1:05pm On Nov 23, 2018
Startups have been creating employee hell in Silicon Valley. That was in the forefront of my mind as I read the book
Lab Rats: How Silicon Valley Made Work Miserable for the Rest of Us. I think this book should be required reading for anybody who thinks working for a startup in Silicon Valley would be fun.

Unless you are into humiliation and abuse (giving or getting), you probably should avoid these startups like the plague. Yes, you could get rich, but you also could end up with a ruined life — broke, divorced, homeless, or maybe even dead by your own hand.

The problems aren’t confined to startups, though. After reading the book, you likely would end up with a whole different perspective about firms like Apple, Google and Facebook as well. And VCs — oh my god. This well-researched book could have you thinking most of them are run by literal demons.

In much the same vein as Brotopia, but expanding beyond abuse of women, this book explains the increase of suicides, mental health issues, and even the expansion of homelessness around some of the most powerful and richest companies in the world — companies you send a lot of money to.

It also takes a look at unicorns, companies with massive valuations but no real way to generate profit, and the con artist management experts permeating the industry who seem to relish creating their own little hells on earth.

Finally, and this is a good thing, the book showcases some of the companies that treat their employees well including a VC where they have focused not only on excellent work/life balance, but also on investing in firms that specifically focus on making the world a better place.

I’ve known Dan Lyons and have read his work for much of my adult life. We kind of went through a war together on the same side, and I couldn’t recommend his book more highly.
However, rather than providing a book review or detailed summary (which might prevent your buying or reading the book), I’m going to propose a spinoff.

It struck me that this book would make a good foundation for a comedy, drama, or reality TV show that would be fascinating to watch, and at the same time actually help make people aware of (and want to fix) this problem. I feel strongly that abuse of any form should be wiped out.

I’ll end with my product of the week: the Oculus Go, a new VR headset from Oculus based on Qualcomm technology.
The Comedy Version

What prompted me to think of a TV show was that Dan has been a writer for the series
Silicon Valley. That show, which I find pretty hard to watch, focuses on a startup. I’m also reminded that The Office was based on a broader retelling of Dilbert-like stories that likely do exist in office environments, in some form or other. The U.S.-based show was based on a show produced in England, and it was a hit for a number of years.

My idea is to focus on a company of young engineers desperate for help in managing people who then hire “experts” to help them fix the problems. The experts would mirror and expand on types showcased in Dan’s book. They would range from fake experts who use deep, thoughtful, adult tools — like Legos — to those who rely on management by Feng Shui.
Check this out How are smartphones affecting teenagers?

Penn & Teller developed a show that made somewhat similar points, called
Bullshit! It ran for several years, but a lot of folks sued them, which suggests that comedy might work better then Penn & Teller’s reality show approach.

There would be a central character who was smart and would break the fourth wall — like George Burns in the really old
George Burns and Gracie Allen Show — or, more recently, like
Deadpool.

So, the audience would always be in on the joke. This character would use sarcasm and innuendo heavily to point out why each of these “expert” geniuses really were idiot con artists, and foil their efforts.

The company could be, I don’t know, really fictional like an electric car company lead by people who didn’t know how to build cars, or maybe even a chip company with a board made up of financial types and MDs — you know things that might not happen in real like. Oh wait…

What really might be fun would be to have the central character present like some uneducated blue-collar worker but actually be the secret owner of the company and a billionaire with only the audience in on this as well.

Another twist could show the central character coming in as a janitor and taking a lot of abuse, but learning where all the idiots are. He then would buy company, get rid of all the idiots, and promote the heroes in the firm who actually provided value. Hmm — you know that might work in real life.

(I’ve often pondered a company that was made up of ex-spies who would be hired to go into a firm secretly to find out all of its problems prior to an acquisition.)
The Drama Version

The drama would pit a group of experts against a plot from a foreign government — let’s say, oh, China — that wanted to destroy U.S. business by infecting it with management practices that sound really smart but actually are idiotic.

Using a combination of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. concepts (with regard to headquarters and tools), some NCIS-like analysis, and some Mission Impossible-like stunts, their job would be to undermine the foreign entity’s efforts without letting anyone know they were even there.

Rather than destroying the business with bad practices, they would trick the firm into implementing good business practices with the long-term goal of finding and stopping the evil mastermind deploying the phony efficiency expert teams.

This would convey why many of these screwy practices are idiotic, and simultaneously address things like phishing and spearphishing, along with practices that trick people into installing viruses or buying into Ponzi schemes.

Done right, it not only would be entertaining, but also — depending on how the plot evolved — could help people understand and avoid the con artists and others constantly trying to scam them. (It also might help with our gullibility with regard to fake news.)
Check this out Sharp’s new phone is half Essential, half iPhone 8

While there likely are enough stories in Dan’s book to fill a season, this show could pull its plots from the same kind of research he did and keep that research — and exposing frauds — in the news, helping to correct this bad behavior.
The Reality TV Version

The Reality TV angle would be to focus on the abusers. People would submit stories of abuse and undercover wired actors would go into the firm and then record and share what was going on.

This would be more like a 60 Minutes expose, but one that specifically focused on abusive managers. A team of experts, likely pulled from the list of good actors in Dan Lyons’ book, would sit on a panel and run a commentary on why what we were watching not only wouldn’t work but why it constituted abuse.

There would be some risks — particularly if some of the very powerful men who make a habit of abusing women, in particular, were showcased. One way around that issue would be to get those who complained of abuse to dictate what happened, and then re-enact the event.

Given that some of the folks who would come forward for a show like this might fake accusations for screen time and attention, it might be interesting to out those people, reducing the number of folks who would make fake claims over time.

Much in the same way that NBC’s
Dateline went after pedophile,s this show would focus on catching extremely abusive executives and managers in the act, forcing change by exposing extremely abusive behavior.
Wrapping Up

The issue with books like Lab Rats is that they typically get an initial wave of readers but then fall into the dustbin of history, and the lessons and insights are lost. I think a TV show could take the concept of Lab Rats and turn it into an interesting lasting lesson that could help make the future a better place for those unfortunate enough to work for one of these insanely abusive and terminally stupid startups.

It also would help mainstream firms that once fell for concepts like forced ranking, and help them make better choices in the future.

I really recommend that you read the book
Lab Rats: How Silicon Valley Made Work Miserable for the Rest of Us, and if you are going to work in tech, pick one of the firms that treats employees with respect over one in which the managers secretly wear “Abuse ‘R’ Us” T-shirts.

My lasting impression of the book is that there are a lot of folks in power who should be kicked out of the human race. The right program might, at least, get them the hell out of management.
Rob Enderle's Product of the Week

I received an
Oculus Go from Qualcomm as the leadup to its analyst event in Hawaii this year. It showcases both what works and what doesn’t work with this technology at the moment.
Check this out Faraday Future leases central California factory in attempt to keep its electric car dreams alive

Addressing some of the early problems with the standalone cell phone-based products, the Oculus Go has decent performance and image quality. This class still is focused on providing a low-cost entry-level VR experience, and it does that.
Oculus Go

Oculus Go

It was sent out so that we could explore the venue we were going to virtually, in advance of our trip. It is ideal for that. In fact, it is good for movies in general. With a decent set of headphones, it provides a nice streaming or download movie experience. For some reason, there doesn’t seem to be an Amazon Prime app available, but it handled Netflix like a champ.

VR games remain a problem, though. Finding a game that I really like playing has been an issue, and the lack of consistency between platforms with the controller is another issue. For instance, one first-person space shooter that I was enjoying appeared to require two controllers (the Oculus Go comes with one) and a button on the controller that the higher-end Oculus has but this product does not (so I couldn’t figure out how to fire the damn missiles).

I really don’t understand why Facebook, which owns Oculus, didn’t specify Oculus Rift-like controllers. The Rift is the more expensive product (US$349 vs. $249). That way the user experience with different classes of device could be more consistent. There are aftermarket controllers, but I doubt that many games have been designed with them in mind, due to low volume. I’m not even sure they actually would work with the Go.

The Oculus Go is a solid improvement over its predecessors. At less than $250, it is a real value that is hampered by a lack of controller consistency across the Oculus line and the lack of a truly compelling game.

Unlike the Oculus Rift, it doesn’t require a PC, making the setup a ton easier and the device realistically portable.

If you are bored and waiting for an appointment or having your teeth cleaned, this is a good way to distract yourself. It is handy if you want to watch a Netflix movie, and many of the shortcomings could be addressed with a couple accessories and one good Halo-like game (Xbox).

I like values, and at under $250, this is a decent one, so this week the Oculus Go is my product of the week.

Science/Technology / The Internet’s Precarious Health | Best Of ECT News by elotidesigns: 11:28am On Nov 23, 2018
This story was originally published on LinuxInsider on April 4, 2018, and is brought to you today as part of our Best of ECT News series.

Mozilla earlier this week launched the first full edition of its
Internet Health Report.

The report is “an open source effort to explore the state of human life on the Internet,” wrote Mozilla Executive Director Mark Surman in an online post.

It consists of research and analysis about the Internet compiled by researchers, engineers, data scientists, policy analysts and artists in Mozilla’s extended community.

The digital rights, open source, and Internet freedom movements stand for the idea that it is possible to build a digital world that is open, accessible and welcoming to all, according to Mozilla.

The Internet Health Report is based on the principles of the recently expanded
Mozilla Manifesto.

“The optimist in me sincerely hopes this will be successful,” said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.

That said, “you also have to ask how many outside the Mozilla community are paying attention,” he told LinuxInsider.

Mozilla “is seeking to see the moral high ground as governments explore regulating the Internet by jumping on the ethics bandwagon early and often,” suggested
Michael Jude, research manager at Stratecast/Frost & Sullivan.

Fake News, Fuzzy Facts

In this first issue of the Internet Health Report, fake news and misinformation are in the spotlight.

The topic engendered considerable interest, Surman said, and data collection became the central focus. The discussion encompassed several issues:

Precision-targeted ads;
Bots and fake accounts;
Facebook’s domination of news distribution; and
Insufficient Web literacy among the general public.

Taken together, these activities and circumstances provide the fuel for fraud and abuse, along with very bad real world outcomes, Surman said.

“Mozilla is trying to stand out as an organization with the user’s best interests at heart,” said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group.

“This is well-timed, given that the issues Facebook has with data collection — and Cambridge Analytica — likely have people concerned about all tech firms at the moment,” he told LinuxInsider.

Also included in the report:

A piece on engineers in Brazil building an
open source bot that automatically inspects politicians’ expenses and discloses officials’ use of public money for private purchases; and
A story about FIRST, a global network of
volunteer cybersecurity experts.

Borders and Battles

There has long been speculation that governments, companies and organizations would carve up the Internet, and that it would end up reflecting the real world — with territories, borders, and battles between different groups.

“Absolutely,” Frost’s Jude told LinuxInsider. “Look at China’s attempts to close off their Internet from the rest of the world, and the EU attempting to impose privacy rights on the entire Web, regardless of where a company’s based.”

Meanwhile, the United States and its allies, also known as the “Five Eyes,” have been spying on one another’s citizens online, and sharing information to get around domestic restrictions.

In the business world, “companies always try to game the regulatory process,” Jude remarked.

Although some large players dominate the space, the Internet “is still very much of a free-for-all,” said Dan Goldstein, president of
Page 1 Solutions.

The Internet Health Report is “an attempt to get people to think about what they’re doing and what tools they’re using with the subtext that we all need to be safer,” Enderle remarked.
Check this out Watch a GIF of every successful — and failed — SpaceX Falcon 9 landing attempt

“Unfortunately, Mozilla doesn’t have much reach on a good day,” he pointed out, “and with Trump and Facebook news chewing up all available bandwidth, much more powerful entities are having trouble getting attention at the moment.”

The collection of consumer data by Internet companies is a concern, but “It would be a significant mistake to eliminate free services like Facebook and Google Search,” Page 1’s Goldstein told LinuxInsider.

That’s not likely to happen in our capitalistic economy, he said, but “it’s important that we encourage all consumers to protect their private information both online and offline.”

Politics / Clearing 16 Years Of PDP Nonsense Not Easy For APC — Chime by elotidesigns: 10:29am On Nov 23, 2018
By Dennis Agbo

Mr. Sullivan Chime served as special adviser, and later commissioner for justice in the eight years of the Chimaroke Nnamani administration on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Enugu State. He subsequently emerged as governor and served as governor for another eight years on the platform of the PDP. Following his successful handover to Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

PDP mocks Buhari over alleged plagiarism

However, not long after his exit from office he defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC. In this interview conducted ahead of the launch of his book An Honour To Serve: Enugu State in the Sullivan years, he speaks on what he alleges as the 16 years of the locust under the PDP. Excerpts:

What would you say was your greatest challenge in the eight years you served as governor?

Before we came in, security in Enugu was nothing to write home about; people left Enugu; they were so scared and Enugu being home to all as capital of old Anambra state; East Central State, Eastern Nigeria and even Southern Nigeria at a time; home to all the Igbo, became unsafe. So, it was a major challenge that we had then. My experience as Attorney General helped me to at least know what the issues were. We were able to handle it very well; moving from that low and very disturbing situation, we became the best, not one of the best. We became the state with the least crime rate in the country.

Was the present Governor your preferred candidate when the issue of succession came up in 2014?

I had no candidate; I allowed the people to make their choice and they came up with him. I made the people of Enugu North a promise that whoever they chose that I will support. Whatever exercise that they went through that threw him up was not the issue; and we supported him.

But he is your godson?

He was never my godson as you have alluded to here but if he wants it’s up to him. I can’t be anything to anybody. Anywhere he wants to see me, I am there. I don’t have issues with him. If he has issues and he come to me, I will be readily available to give him that advice.

What magic do you think will work for President Buhari in the 2019 general election?

There is no magic it is a question of convincing our people letting our people know the difference between the people lying to them and the people telling them the truth. I was reading the other day in the paper where Governor Dave Umahi said that the South-East felt much better under Buhari than PDP. Is he not PDP? You must tell yourself the truth. What did PDP do for you? Let us forget this talk, talk, what did PDP do for you?

We should be asking you what the APC has done for us.

APC just came in…we are talking Federal Government here not state government. What did PDP do for you? Can you drive from here to your place in an hour plus? That used to be the case as a practicing lawyer going to Owerri, I will leave here in the morning and be in Owerri before 9am to do my case.

Maximum an hour ten minutes Enugu to Owerri can you do it now? After 16 years and we are here lying to ourselves? I hear you cannot drive straight on this Enugu – Port Harcourt Express road to Port-Harcourt now you must go through some villages. The road is now impassable and we are talking about PDP. Look at Enugu – Onitsha Express road.

What has the APC in power for the past three and a half years done to remedy the situation?

APC inherited a lot of nonsense and you don’t expect them to clear it in one day. Look at Enugu – Onitsha road. Can you drive from here to even 9th Mile? Can you?

Now that APC has come work is in progress. There is no magic; we are talking of 36 states. There is no magic you need time to clear the mess.

Would you be holding similar view if you were still in the PDP?

Yes. We complained. There was nothing we didn’t do, almost all our meetings with the PDP federal government was about all these basic roads. Yar’Adua when he was president promised to dualize 9th Mile to Makudi, he made that promise. May God bless that man, if he had survived he would have done that road because the man was a man of his words, unfortunately what happened, happened and all the promises disappeared.
Check this out Pope silent on claim he ignored abuse

The International Airport built here was approved by him but for him there wouldn’t be any international airport here. We had to use the word ‘Biafran president’ here for five years what happened? We are here clamouring for Igbo president, Igbo president we should be interested in what we get not about appointments.

We had all the appointments under PDP, I mean all the appointments so, what happened? So what happened at the end? It is not about holding any office, it is not about holding any appointment it is about benefits from the government. Let our places be developed. Let our places be developed. Jonathan was approving that some of the rail lines be adjusted to what they call standard gauge and all that; did he talk about Enugu Port-Harcourt line?

It didn’t take time for you to fallout with Chimaroke Nnamani who brought you into politics; why?

I didn’t fallout with him. He decided to join another political party; I didn’t have issues with him, he probably saw what I saw in 2015 way back and he left. He went to the senate on the platform of the PDP but by 2011 he felt that he had become powerful enough to float a party, maybe to replicate what Orji Uzor Kalu did when he took over Imo and Abia states with his Peoples Progressive Alliance (PPA). Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. I don’t have any issue with him. As a matter of fact, you will be shocked that I dedicated this book to him. Forget about the stories you hear outside; you wanted us to be talking ‘Ebe Ano-Ebe Ano’. No. Let’s concentrate a talk about more serious things. He brought me into politics; I wouldn’t have had the opportunity I had if he didn’t bring me into politics.

What happened to projects like the international conference centre, it was one of the projects you did not execute?

Let me say this, you don’t personalize government, if you come in and there is an ongoing project, you access it if it is something that will be beneficial we certainly continue with it and complete it. If you go to ESUT Teaching Hospital Parklane we developed that place more than Chimaroke Nnamani did though he started it. If you go to ESUT main campus they will tell you what we did there because they are projects, you don’t personalize government.
Check this out I believe Fayose has done the right thing... - Fani-Kayode

We completed it, if you go to Maryland estate which was not even developed because few of the blocks were at the foundation stages; we took over and we completed the whole thing, improved on the original plan. On the international conference centre, the major problem apart from not being topmost in our priority giving the kind of tight funding we had.

But apart from those issues, the major thing that happened was that shortly after I became Governor the architect who designed that place, somebody I had known, we went to school together in Enugu campus, he came to me and told me he was being owed and I asked him to get me three things for government to process his application, one was to get me the contract document so we know our commitment, two, to get us evidence of what he has been paid so that we know what the balance because there was no record anywhere and thirdly he should get us the design because there was no copy of the design anywhere, in the office of the governor, ministry of land didn’t have it. But till today I am still waiting for him, the man disappeared not minding he was being owed. So anybody telling you he is going to do the international conference centre is a joker.

But the place has been cleared, getting ready for work?

Its deceit nobody is doing anything, it’s like another second Nigeria bridge under PDP. Nobody is going to do anything there, there is no design.

Was it a wrong concept or what?

It couldn’t have been, it’s based on any administration’s priority list. It couldn’t have been. What are you doing with international conference centre, yes desirable to have it in Enugu we searched for eight years for people to come and take over that place and develop it in a PPP arrangement because to use public fund to develop it would have been irresponsible.

Politics / Okonjo-iweala, Others Didn’t Urge Me Not To Concede— Jonathan by elotidesigns: 9:15am On Nov 23, 2018
By Soni Daniel, Northern Region Editor

Former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, dismissed insinuations that he was persuaded not to concede defeat by some of his ministers, including former Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, describing it as twisted logic.

The former President also advocated the abolition of the two-term tenure system in Nigeria for presidents and governors and proposed the adoption of a single term of seven years to save the nation from the bitter rivalry and tension usually associated with the struggle for second term.

Responding to the claim, Jonathan noted that such deduction was tantamount to stretching interpretative reporting beyond acceptable limits, stressing that the writer willfully ignored the true account of what happened at that critical moment as clearly stated in the book, “just to create mischief.”
Ex-President Jonathan .

In a statement by Ikechukwu Eze, his media adviser, Jonathan further described the claim as gross misrepresentation of what he wrote in his new book.

He said: “Our attention has been drawn to a circulating story entitled Jonathan: I was pressed to reject 2015 election result, which erroneously claimed that some identified former aides and ministers of ex-President Jonathan advised him ‘not to accept defeat’.

“The story which was said to have been written from ex-President Jonathan’s new book, “My Transition Hours,” mentioned the then Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Attorney-General of the Federation and Justice Minister Mohammed Bello Adoke; Aviation Minister Osita Chidoka, as those whose advice was rebuffed by Jonathan.

“This is obviously a gross misrepresentation of what was clearly stated in the book. President Jonathan had maintained that he never consulted anybody over the decision to call and congratulate his opponent while the results of the 2015 presidential election were still being tallied.

2019: Credible Elections will boost respect for Nigeria-Okowa

“Whereas the decision to concede defeat was one he took without any compelling, the former President is however grateful to those who were with him at that moment and many other Nigerians that shared in his conviction to put across the historic phone call.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the former President in his narrative of his engagement with the mentioned key appointees at that critical time in the nation’s political history stated clearly that we’re considering ‘sundry alternatives, but I was quiet in the midst of their discussion’.

“However, this was how a daily (not Vanguard) chose to report the narrative: ‘Okonjo-Iweala, Adoke, Chidoka, Dudafa advised me not to accept defeat’.
Check this out Togo: Obasanjo asks president to step down, says has nothing new to offer

“It, therefore, beggars belief that the phrase ‘sundry alternatives’ could be interpreted to mean that the former President was advised by the identified personalities ‘not to accept defeat’.

“We always say that the society will be better served if journalists keep their interpretative reporting within the limits of credible and constructive imagination.”

…on political offices

President Jonathan, whose view is contained in his book My Transition Hours, unveiled in Abuja on Tuesday, also suggested making the office of the president in Nigeria and other African countries less attractive and what he called ‘office of the citizen’ more powerful.

He said the way out of the political quagmire on the continent was for leaders to abolish their selfish bid to remain in office forever and pave the way for a seamless transition to their successors.

Jonathan gave a pass mark to himself for taking steps to conduct a credible election and handing over to his successor, despite being an incumbent.

He boasted: “I reflect on my homecoming celebrations, I am glad that a large number of people appreciated the depth of my action.

“Some Nigerians on their own declared me the Hero of Democracy while some others refer to me as The Face of Democracy. The words ‘hero’ or ‘face’ are of little significance to me but thinking deeply, I know that the message of democracy and orderly transfer of power is resonating with our people.

“I only hope that successive administrations will sustain our achievement and make INEC stronger and more independent

“I am fully persuaded that we need free and fair elections. So what can we do to achieve this? We must continue to nurture the democratic spirit.”

and as I travel around the continent, I will continue to advocate that each nation-state looks at its action plan by identifying and eliminating challenges facing them.”

such as nation-first thinking as opposed to me and my tribe against my nation.

“Making the office of the President less attractive and the office of the Citizen more powerful; granting financial autonomy to Electoral Commissions; and strong independent ombudsman to investigate and punish incidences of electoral crimes.

“One problem we have in Africa is the re-election of a sitting President. Can an incumbent President oversee the conduct of credible elections, not minding the outcome? In Nigeria, I had once proposed a single term of seven years to prevent incumbents from running for re-election because I notice that when the incumbent is contesting to be re-elected, there appears to be more tension in the country.
Check this out Wike, Dankwambo, Aregbesola win BusinessDay Governors Awards

‘’Of course, some critics fought against this idea, thinking it was a ploy on my part to elongate my tenure. Allied to that is the orderly transfer of power from one leader to the next. This issue has created a lot of conflict over the years.

‘’Political leaders prefer to stay in power longer than their term because of the fear of what may happen to them as private citizens. This concern is very real, prompting leaders to tamper with the constitution for the purpose of elongating their tenure.

“A very good example is the case of The Gambia. Yahya Jammeh had initially and graciously conceded after his surprise defeat during the December 1, 2016 Gambian presidential election. The final official results gave the opposition candidate, Adama Barrow, 43.3% of the vote, giving him a slim 3.7% margin of victory over the incumbent Yahya Jammeh who got 39.6%.

‘’With such a narrow margin, Yahya could have asked for a recount or in any way disputed the results but he did not, at that time. He conceded.

“However, on December 4, 2016, Hamat Bah, the leader of President Adama Barrow’s National Reconciliation Party, gave an international press conference to say his party would probe Yahya Jammeh over his alleged crimes against the Gambian people, things began to change and just five days later Jammeh rejected the election results and rescinded his concession thereby sparking a crisis that almost engulfed his nation.

“Mr. Jammeh may or may not have been a saint, but casting all the blame for the stalemate that occurred on him is a bit too convenient. If the National Reconciliation Party had been a bit more circumspect, what happened may not have occurred and The Gambia and the rest of West Africa would have been spared the tension.

“This is a lesson that ought to be imbibed by all winning candidate, whether or not they are taking over from a rival. No matter how badly you feel about your predecessor, you need to think about the stability of your nation and focus on leadership rather than on settling scores.

“While no elections can ever be perfect, not even in the most advanced and stable democracies, at a minimum, people want their elections to be free, fair and credible. My conviction and determination to reshape the electoral process in Africa is critical, and for that reason I urge all African nations to work with fidelity for the greater good of the African continent.
Check this out Cossy is the only woman I can marry in Nollywood — Benson Okonkwo

“Having been President, I know the toll the cost of electioneering takes on our system. I still recommend having only one tenure of seven years instead of the popular tenure system of two terms of four years. This, in my view, would make leaders work and do the right thing since the fear of losing election as an incumbent President will no longer be there.

“There is also the need for electoral reforms that simplifies the electoral process and ensures a reduction in the cost of running elections. My hope is that African leaders must embrace the concept of democracy that delivers purposeful leadership that improves the lives of the people and envision a secure future for their nation.

“Before the election, Muhammadu Buhari and I committed to take necessary steps towards a peaceful electoral process by signing an inter-party agreement. We also agreed to respect the outcome of the ballot. This was an important message to reassure the world that good things can come out of Nigeria. Democracy is not just about fulfilling all righteousness by treating the people to the ballot box that you bring out only on Election Day. Democracy boils down to legitimacy and ensuring that the people have the necessary dividends. Elections must offer valid choices.

“Hopefully, in the near future our country would have grown democratically to the point where elections would be based on the programmes and policies of parties and character of the candidates, rather than ethnicity or religious preferences.

“Over time, through my Foundation, I will speak to thousands and perhaps millions of my fellow Africans to share my story, my heart and my recommendations on having free, fair and credible elections. In my home country, I am associated with the mantra one man one vote, one woman one vote, one youth one vote

“I crave the support of one and all to take my work forward as I have made a covenant to dedicate the rest of my life to the cause of peace, democracy, stability, and good governance – God helping me,” the former president wrote.
