Politics / Pope Endorses Use Of Force In Iraq To Protect Minorities by Emeca: 11:59pm On Aug 19, 2014
Pope Francis on Monday said efforts to stop Islamic militants from attacking religious minorities in Iraq are legitimate but said the international community — and not just one country — should decide how to intervene.

Francis was asked if he approved of the unilateral U.S. airstrikes on militants of the Islamic State group, who have captured swaths of northern and western Iraq and northeastern Syria and have forced minority Christians and others to either convert to Islam or flee their homes.

"In these cases, where there is an unjust aggression, I can only say that it is licit to stop the unjust aggressor," Francis said. "I underscore the verb 'stop.' I'm not saying 'bomb' or 'make war,' just 'stop.' And the means that can be used to stop them must be evaluated."

Francis also said he and his advisers were considering whether he might go to northern Iraq himself to show solidarity with persecuted Christians. But he said he was holding off for now on a decision.

The pope's comments were significant because the Vatican has vehemently opposed any military intervention in recent years. Pope Paul VI famously uttered the words "War never again, never again war" at the United Nations in 1965 as the Vietnam War raged, a refrain that has been repeated by every pope since. St. John Paul II actively tried to head off the Iraq war on the grounds that a "preventive" war couldn't be justified. He repeatedly called for negotiations to resolve the crisis over Iraq's invasion of Kuwait a decade prior.

Francis himself staged a global prayer and fast for peace when the U.S. was threatening airstrikes on Syria last year.

But in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks — in the Vatican's mind an "unjust aggression" — John Paul defended the "legitimate fight against terrorism," and the right of nations to defend themselves against terrorist attacks. He did though call for restraint and the Vatican subsequently focused its position on emphasizing the need to eradicate the root causes of terrorism: poverty and oppression.

Recently, the Vatican has been increasingly showing support for military intervention in Iraq, given that Christians are being directly targeted because of their faith and that Christian communities, which have existed for 2,000 years, have been emptied as a result of the extremists' onslaught.

The U.S. began launching airstrikes against IS fighters on Aug. 8, allowing Kurdish forces to fend off an advance on their regional capital of Irbil and to help tens of thousands of religious minorities escape.

Kudos to him for his faith.

At this very moment, this country is not worth dying for.

If these soldiers protest, they would be court-martialled, shuld they abandon their duties, a heavier punishment awaits them. The only option available is to go fight a heavily-armed enemy with inferior weapons; not dat the country is poor and cannot afford better weapons but because of corruption and uncaring attitude by those at d helm.

I feel the pain of these women. This is d much they can do to try change the situation.

This instance is not an example of guerilla warfare in any way. An organised terror unit has taken over a whole town, and are fully and openly repelling federal troops attempting to retake the town. That is hardly a hide-n-seek arrangement. It is full-blown, frontal war. The excuses being made by the military about Boko Haram's so-called guerrilla tactics are increasingly untenable.

guerilla warfare is characterized by unconventional tactics including suicide bombing, surprise ambush attacks, etc

boko haram adopts dis tactics because they cant face d Nigerian Army in a full frontal attack. Moreover they dont have d resources the army has like warplanes, tanks, etc. They depend strongly on d element of surprise. Those examples i gave are classic cases. Boko haram is adopting d same tactics of Hamas, Hezbollah, AlShabab, etc

Another name for guerilla warfare is assymetric warfare. Read it up.

Like I said before, unless its politics in play, these militants are not goin away any sooner.
Education / Re: The Origin Of The Word Oyibo by Emeca: 9:16am On Aug 09, 2014
What is too hard to comprehend here?? Igbos started using the word 'Oyibo' long before there was anytin called Nigeria, long before they had any meaningful interaction with yorubas. 'Oyibo' is used fondly by Igbos when referring to fair-skinned people unlike d yoruba's 'Oyinbo' with derogatory undertone.

This confusion is all down to some sort of similar syntax.

Due to media censorship, we may neva know just how our 'illustrious' army is faring against these militants.

Guerilla warfare is one of the most energy-sapping, morale-sagging, money-draining system of warfare in the history of mankind. E.g; America v Taliban/AlQaeda, Israel v Hamas/Hezbollah, Ethiopia/Kenya v AlShabab, Iraq/Syria v Islamic State and now Nigeria v Boko Haram.

Lets prepare in advance to hear that billions of dollars have been spent to fight Boko Haram without a decisive victory.

Family / Confused Parents Paint Triplets’ Toenails To Tell Them Apart by Emeca: 11:50pm On Aug 04, 2014
Karen and Ian Gilbert are the proud parents of one-year-old triplets, Ffion, Maddison and Paige. For a while they were also the very confused parents of the three baby girls who are so identical in appearance that they had mom and dad stumped as to who was who.

But the Gilberts found a way around the issue by color coding the girls’ toenails, with a different color of nail polish for each: Ffion wears fuschia polish, Maddison has mint green, and Paige wears purple. Each baby has the first letter of her name matching the first letter of the color.

The mom made sure to clarify this is not a fashion statement and really was a method to tell the children apart until they get a little older and hopefully develop different looks and personalities.

“It makes life a lot easier when it comes to our daily routine of feeding, bathing and nappy changing” the South Wales mom said. “The color coding helps us to know who has had what.”

Seems like the parents can use all the help they can get. The family goes through more than 120 diaper changes and 84 bottles of formula milk on a weekly basis!

On top of that, the one-year-olds are already mini celebs as they’ve got an acting gig on two British television shows, where the three play the same baby.

The parents have their hands full, but it seems they wouldn’t have it any other way. Karen says, “They are lovely little girls who have already brought us so much joy – in triplicate.”
