Health / Beach Date Gone Wrong - Lady Shares Her Embarrassing Period Story by EndoNigeria: 2:18pm On Mar 10, 2021
I was on a date a few years ago. It was a beach date so I was wearing a swimsuit, a white one at that. My date was going so well, that mother nature had to surprise me. I had already stained, and I didn't even realize it. We were taking a stroll by the beach, when this guy walked up to me and told me about it. I was shocked and embarrassed, I didn't know what to do and I just told the guy thank you. Luckily for me, my date was a very sweet guy, he offered me his shirt to wear and we went to the mall around the beach to get a sanitary pad. It was a really embarrassing day for me.

Health / My Period Story: How I Got Embarrassed At A Client's Office by EndoNigeria: 3:54pm On Mar 09, 2021
Having painful period is bad enough, but getting it unexpectedly at work makes it much worse. I would never forget the day my period shocked and embarrassed me, God, it wasn’t funny! The day started out normal, waking up early and preparing for work as usual. At work, we had a scheduled meeting at a client’s office and I was to be picked by my boss on the way to the meeting.

On getting to the client’s office, we had to wait for a few minutes before the meeting commenced. Was super excited because it was a really big company. I was seated on a beautiful velvet-topped chair throughout the meeting. I got up smiling and saw the shock on peoples faces, I looked down on the chair I was seated on, and there it was “a large pink stain on a nude chair. I was mortified, and embarrassed, so I just sat back on the chair like that should save me the embarrassment.

A lady walked up to me and offered me a scarf to cover my dress. I still didn't get up as I asked her I'm so sorry, what about the chair” - she told me it was fine that she would call someone to take care of it. I stood up, utterly embarrassed and went to the toilet. To this day, I still don't know if my boss knew about that scenario, or he was saving me from more embarrassment by not talking about it. Unexpected periods are the worst and I would never forget that day.

When a woman with the condition has her monthly period, the blood and tissue shed from the endometrial growth has no way of leaving the body, hence resulting in internal bleeding, inflammation that may result in pain, adhesions and bowel problems.

Health / Endometriosis - The Invisible Disease by EndoNigeria: 5:15pm On Mar 05, 2018
Endometriosis is a cruel, crippling, and incurable condition that affects an estimated 1 in 10 women and girls in Nigeria. The condition is associated with unexplained and excruciating pain, which makes it difficult for sufferers to live normal lives.

Due to lack of awareness in both the general public, as well as with medical professionals, it takes on average of 6-10 years of suffering and countless visits to doctors before a patient can be diagnosed with Endometriosis.

The ugly thing about Endometriosis is that many people suffer from it but do not even know. They mistake it for menstrual pain and just live with the effects of the condition. What’s worse is that help is available, but many are unaware of it.

We can alleviate the pain of Endometriosis in our society, first by creating awareness for it.

In order to achieve this, Endometriosis Support Group Nigeria (ESGN) has organized a walk to help raise awareness about this condition.
Please show your support for women who suffer from it by joining in this walk. Every step you take counts and will go a long way in changing a life.

In addition to this, watch out for the women around you. If they have very painful periods, encourage them to go see a doctor to rule out Endometriosis.

There is a saying “what you don’t know doesn’t kill you,” but ignorance about endometriosis can cause serious harm. The earlier it is detected, the better life will be for those affected.

Date: 10th March 2018
Time: 7AM
Venue: Starting point – City Mall, Onikan through Awolowo Road to Nigerian Law School

Health / Endometriosis - The Invisible Disease by EndoNigeria: 12:25pm On Feb 28, 2017
If you were asked to name the worst threats to women’s health, you would most likely start with breast cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, depression and a few others. Chances are that Endometriosis may never come to mind. Yet it is a medical condition that should be of great concern.

Endometriosis is an incurable medical condition that affects a woman’s reproductive organs. It happens when the tissue that lines the uterus begins to grow outside the uterus. Every month, the tissue growing outside the uterus act like those in the womb, they build up, break down and then bleed but unlike the tissue in the womb, this blood has no way to escape.

It is a chronic and debilitating condition that causes painful or heavy periods. It may also lead to infertility, pelvic pain, fatigue, bowel and bladder problems. It is responsible for about 30-50% of the cases of infertility and it affects 10-15% of women of reproductive age. One of its many symptoms is the severe menstrual pain that make the “victims” unable to live normal lives. Sadly, very many are unaware of its existence and still suffer in silence. An estimated 1 million Nigerian women are suffering from this painful condition.

Symptoms:

The major symptoms of Endometriosis are pain and infertility.

Pain is the most common symptom of endometriosis, occurring in around 80% of patients, it is usually described as:
Pelvic, lower abdominal or back pain with intermittent cramping of varying degrees
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)-like symptoms including Dyschezia (pain associated with constipation)
Frequent urination and/or pain during urination giving cystitis-like symptoms which may be recurrent
Dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse)
Although pain may occur at any time during the menstrual cycle, it is often worst during menstruation (known as dysmenorrhea).

Diagnosis:

Due to inadequate knowledge among the general public and medical community, many endometriosis patients are misdiagnosed multiple times which then leads to unnecessary and inappropriate treatment. A definitive way to diagnose endometriosis is by laparoscopy- an operation in which a camera (a laparoscope) is inserted into the pelvis via a small cut near the navel.

The surgeon uses the camera to see the pelvic organs and look for any signs of endometriosis. If endometriosis is diagnosed, the endometriosis may be treated or removed for further examination during the laparoscopy. There is no test for endometriosis, meaning patients cannot have their blood, urine, or saliva tested to confirm the disease.

Management & Treatment:

There is currently no cure for Endometriosis but there are treatments to reduce pain and improve the quality of life of those affected.

Available treatment options include:

Surgery
Hormone treatment
Pain relief

The good news is that although it cannot be cured, Endometriosis can be managed and most of its effects alleviated. The more people know about this, the better they are able to manage this condition. That’s why the Endometriosis Support Group of Nigeria (ESGN) is creating awareness by initiating a walk in support of the fight against the condition.

Show your support for women who suffer from Endometriosis by participating in EndoWalk 2017. Every step you take counts and will go a long way in changing a life. The walk takes place in Abuja on the 2nd March and 11th of March in Lagos.
