A recent ranking released by the the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a sister company of The Economist magazine on 25 African cities has placed Lagos and Abuja among the top four cities in Africa with the highest cost of living.

The key results of the cost of living rankings per city reveals that Abuja is the second most expensive city in Africa with a total expenditure score of 107.4. Lagos comes fourth with 100.8 total expenditure.

Ranking first on the list as Africa’s most expensive city is Luanda in Angola with a score of 131.8, while Addis Ababa came last with a score of 60.8.

In other rankings, Abuja emerged as the 12th city in terms of consumption of alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics, while Lagos took the 21st position among the 25 cities surveyed.

In terms of money spent on transportation, Lagos and Abuja emerged 15th and 22nd out of the 25 cities, scoring 107.5 and 91.7, respectively. Top on this list is Abidjan with 172.0 score spent on transportation, while Alexandra in Egypt came last with a score of 71.7.

The Economist Intelligence Unit produces regular reports on the “reports on the liveability”, and cost of living, of the world’s major cities, which receive wide coverage in international news sources.

South Africa’s consul-general in China, Lassy Chiwayo has been recalled after he was allegedly found wandering the streets unclad.

The veteran politician, who spent time in prison with Nelson Mandela, has had his contract in Shanghai terminated and is back in Pretoria.

The South African foreign office says he was recalled due to ‘health reasons’, but several newspapers have reported that Mr Chiwayo was found wandering the street near his home unclad three months ago.

Sunday World reports Chiwayo’s walks the streets without clothes regularly.

“He would disappear for days without trace and he would be found walking around unclad,” a source said. Mr Chiwayo was also reported to have assaulted South Africa’s Bheki Langa at an official function in Beijing.

Following the reports, the 44-year-old has denied he was recalled saying it is ‘general practice’ for envoys to be reassigned. He also dismissed the unclad wandering stories and insisted his relationship with Dr Langa was ‘healthy and cordial’.

“All that you are saying is news to me,” Chiwayo told the Sunday World, adding “I don’t have any health challenges that need intervention from the department.”

Mr Chiwayo, an engaged father-of-three has been hit by a series of misfortunes in recent times; last month, a fire gutted his home in Nelspruit in a suspected arson attack which destroyed a Porsche, a quad bike and £22,000-worth of Persian rugs, and now the news of the veteran politician walking the streets unclad.

Its scientific name is Urechis unicinctus. It is a species of marine spoon worm widely referred to as the fat innkeeper worm or the man-hood fish. It is common in Asia, and a delicacy there. It is called pinyin in Chinese, yumushi in Japanese, and gaebul in Korean.

It lives in burrows in sand and mud. It gets the name “fat innkeeper worm” because the tunnels it creates often contain other animals.

This spoon worm is commonly eaten raw with salt and sesame oil in Korea and in parts of Japan.

In Chinese cuisine the worm is stir-fried with vegetables, or dried and powdered to be used as an umami (pleasant savory taste) enhancer. In particular, the worm is considered an important ingredient in Shandong cuisine and is used in numerous recipes.

It is also used for fishing bait.

When next you visit an Asian restaurant, ask for it and tell us how it tastes. For me, it’s a No. I won’t be able to eat it without thinking of its name.

Your Facebook “likes” might be revealing more than you know about your private life.

It is possible to predict potentially private traits such as a person’s sexual orientation, political leanings, religion, intelligence, emotional stability and even if they abuse drugs or alcohol, just by analyzing their Facebook likes, according to a new study out of the University of Cambridge.

Liking something on Facebook is a simple, almost mindless way to pass time on the social networking site, which says it has more than a billion users worldwide. With one click, people can “like” pages — for brands, public figures, memes, music and groups — as well as articles, photos or status updates from their friends. But that quick action can be a powerful statement.

“Facebook likes have a meaning that we can use to understand the psychology behind what people do,” says David Stillwell, a co-author of the study.

Researchers looked at the Facebook profiles and likes, along with surveys and personality tests, for 58,466 individuals. Using that data, they developed a model that predicts personal attributes from Facebook likes with impressive accuracy. It has the best luck categorizing people as Caucasian or African-American (95% accuracy), followed by gender, male sexuality, Democratic or Republican leanings, and detecting Christians and Muslims.

One of more unusual categories was whether a person’s parents had split before they turned 21, which had a relatively low 60% level of accuracy (still high enough to benefit advertisers, noted the researchers). These people were more more likely to like statements about relationships, such as “If I’m with you then I’m with you. I don’t want anybody else,” and “I’m sorry I love you.”

“It gives us a poignant insight into the effects that parental breakup has on children even after they grow up,” says Stillwell.

The likes themselves are a combination of obvious and baffling. Liking “Kathy Griffin,” “Juicy Couture,” or the musical “Wicked” were found to be strong indicators that a man was gay, while liking sports-related topics, “Bruce Lee” and “Being Confused After Waking Up From Naps” were more popular with straight men, according to the the study.

A person’s Facebook likes can also be used to predict intelligence, say the researchers. Liking “The Daily Show”, “science”, “Morgan Freeman’s Voice” and the mysterious “Curly Fries” indicates someone is highly intelligent. Lower intelligence was suggested by likes for “Clark Griswold”, “Harley-Davidson” and “Bret Michaels”, according to the study.

Likes for “beerpong”, “Chris Tucker” and “cheerleading” were strong predictors of an extrovert while “role playing games,” “Anime” and “Voltaire” pointed to introverted personality types. “Kurt Donald Cobain” and “Vampires Everywhere” indicated neurotic personalities, “Wes Anderson” and “serial killer” were liked by spontaneous people, and competitive types liked “Sun Tzu” and “I hate everyone.”

Researchers are opening up the tool to everyone so they can get a peek at their own personal results. People can check out what their Facebook likes say about them by visiting YouAreWhatYouLike.comand logging in with their Facebook profile. The site does an instant personality test and rates how open, stable, agreeable, extroverted and conscientious a person is. While the data is analyzed by researchers to improve the overall test, any personal information is stripped out.

Charlyboy confirmed the death of his kidnapped cousin, Emeka Emeniye who was abducted by some unknown gunmen in Imo state, early last week. Nigerian female rapper Adesola Adesimbo Idowu popularly called Weird MC is thanking God to be alive today after she recently escaped death from an angry military officer who threatened to kill her.

According to her, she spotted the military officer driving with his family on Lagos Ibadan Expressway and cautioned him to watch out because of his safety and that of his family.

And to her surprise, the military officer stopped, brought out a knife and threatened to kill her.

The rate at which Ghanaian film producers used to shoot English films some months back has fallen. In about a period of three months, our camera lenses have captured only six (6) producers shooting within three (3) months, unlike some years back when 20 or 30 movies were shot in a month.

One may say the low turn up in shooting has also contributed to the fact that the few producers that are currently on location are not employing the services of the actors, who have started shooting their own movies.

A High Court sitting in Umuahia has sentenced a former police officer, Corporal Umaru Mohammed to death by hanging over the killing of his colleague, Clement Amaechi, in 2011.

Both of them were officers in the Abia state police command.

Immediately after the delivery of the judgment, Mohammed refused to be handcuffed and taken away as he warned all the prison warders to stay away from him.

He was eventually subdued by armed officers in the courtroom.

Mohammed attempted to snatch a gun from one of the warders that brought him to the court before he was subdued by security men.

Delivering judgment on the matter Justice Agwu Umah Kalu said the prosecution proved unequivocally that the gunshots fired by the accused person at close range killed the deceased, adding that it is an offence that is punishable under section 319, cap 1 of the criminal code in the state.

Justice Kalu said the accused deserves no sympathy and ordered that he should be hanged by the neck until he is confirmed dead, stressing that it should serve as a deterrent to those who may want to embark on such senseless venture.

An eight-year-old schoolboy has married a 61-year-old woman because the ghost of his dead ancestor told him to.

Sanele Masilela tied the knot with Helen Shabangu, who is already married and a mother-of-five.

The boy, from Tshwane, South Africa, said he had been told by his dead ancestors to wed and his family, fearing divine retribution, forked out for a wedding.

They paid £500 for the bride and a further £1,000 for the big day, which was organised in just two months.

R&B star Chris Brown’s troubles seem to know no end since he got in the news for molesting his ex-girlfriend Rihanna. He is in the news again for yelling at a valet and refusing to pay a $10 charge at the PINZ Bowling Center in Los Angeles, CA.

Brown is reported to have refused the payment on the grounds that he did not stay at the bowling alley long enough to be charged $10.

But that does not seem to be his biggest problem at the moment. A Minister of State and Member of Parliament in Ghana, Rashid Pelpuo has called for his arrest for abusing controlled substances in public and inciting the public to civil disobedience.

Chris Brown was the main act for a mammoth show organized by Charterhouse, Ghana’s leading event organizer for rLG Communications to launch the IT company’s Home Office People Environment (HOPE) City project.

The American entertainer hit the stage and performed to the admiration of a huge audience who had come to the Accra Sports stadium to see him. He combined dazzling dance moves, light and visual effects as well as several costume changes to make his show outstanding. He particularly enthralled Ghanaians when he brought on Nigerian singer/rapper Wizkid to do the Ghanaian ‘azonto’ dance with him.

The controversy then started when Chris Brown is purported to have -at a point in his performance promoted the use of marijuana and actually gone ahead to smoke a joint to the amazement of the cheering crowd. “…if anybody’s tripping on you smoking weed, f**k them”, he is alleged to have said.

The embattled R&B singer is also getting a lot of criticism for the excessive use of vulgar language (particularly the F word) in the course of the show.

A post performance assessment however suggests that the singer may be getting flack for more than these stated reasons. A number of people have also berated rLG for dishing out $1 million to him as payment while Ghanaian artists played almost no part in the event. A peeved Hiplife artist, speaking on condition of anonymity whined “That’s what they do all the time; they bring all these yawa artists and pay them gargantuan amounts, and they don’t even know we exist at such times. And when we are lucky enough for them to approach us sometimes, they will not pay you even a decimal of that amount… Even azonto, someone has to come from Naija to dance it?”

Speaking in an interview with Sahara Reporters however, George Quaye, one of the event organizers refuted the claim. Even though he refused to disclose exactly how much was paid, he emphasized that the figure was less than a million dollars. “We did not pay him a million dollars, I can put that on record” he stated. “It is not our policy to disclose how much we pay our clients without their express permission, but I can tell you for a fact that it was not a million dollars”.

RAFA BENITEZ accused Alex Ferguson of snubbing him as their bitter feud blew up again.

The Chelsea interim boss claimed he was waiting to greet Ferguson in front of his dugout before the game but the Manchester United manager ignored him.

Benitez said: “I was waiting at the beginning. I was ready and waiting and he just walked past. I have education and know what I have to do. You’ll have to ask him why he did not do it.”

Rio Ferdinand could be in hot water for tripping and shoving Fernando Torres in one movement — and then yanking the Chelsea player to his feet.

The 85th-minute incident was missed by referee Howard Webb but the FA could still take action.

Within minutes, Teigen showed (slight) regret over posting the flick, but was too drunk to really care. “Sh-t. I didn’t think it was that bad but I’m on the wine,” she wrote.

The joy of every expectant mother is to deliver safely; a healthy and normal baby but that was not the case for Malama Zainab, a 19-year-old mother who was delivered of a baby with ‘three heads.’

On that fateful Sunday, March 3, 2013, Zainab was rushed to the Malumfashi General Hospital in Katsina State and while in labour, members of her family eagerly anticipated the birth of twins as revealed by an earlier scan but to their shock and utter bewilderment, a baby girl with what appears to be an unusual head formation was delivered.

Instead of tears of joy, members of the family who were present at the hospital including Zainab’s husband, Malam Dahiru Umar busted into tears of sorrow when they were informed about the abnormalities of the new baby.

Zainab, on the other hand could not control her tears when she beheld the strange child. “I was shocked when I was told I gave birth to three-headed baby girl; I busted into tears because I was baffled and upset with the development.”

Recounting her ordeal, Zainab continued, “the delivery had confused me, because I have never expected it in my life. During my ante-natal visits to hospital, I was told that I was carrying twins, but to my utmost surprise, I gave birth to a three-headed baby.”
Zainab also explained that though that was her first delivery, she never experienced any abnormality during her ante-natal, adding that “I also underwent normal labour before I finally delivered the baby through normal processes.

“I have considered the development as a destiny and a test from the Almighty Allah, which every Muslim is expected to accept in good faith. As a Muslim, I have accepted it in good faith and prayed for Allah’s intervention. And I am sure Allah will not let us down as far as this issue is concerned, because He knows why this happened to us,” she concluded.

Meanwhile, Malumfashi local government has sponsored the three-headed baby to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika-Zaria, for further necessary medical action.
