The Oxford and Cambridge Society of India Scholarships are part-cost awards for undergraduate, second undergraduate, graduate study and research in any subject available at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford, UK.

The Oxford and Cambridge Society of India (OCSI) is a not-for-profit alumni organisation based in New Delhi, India. The scholarships offered by OCSI are Equal Opportunity, i.e. the decisions made in awarding these scholarships are not based on race, colour, religion, disability, age (except for maximum age criterion), sex or ancestry. Close family members of the Executive Committee of the Oxford and Cambridge Society of India are not eligible for consideration for these scholarships.

These scholarships were instituted by the Society over fifty years ago. Originally established as a purely social network of the Oxford and Cambridge alumni in Delhi, the Society transitioned into a more academic and educational support network in the 1960s, while continuing with its major role as an alumni body. Initially, the scholarships were a peripheral activity, but these soon became the most important aspect of the working of the society, which itself moved from a Delhi-base to an all-India role through the scholarships.

The universities of Oxford and Cambridge have been favoured destinations for Indian students for many years. However, in recent years, the increasing cost of a British university education and the greater competition for the few scholarships available has meant that fewer and fewer Indian students are able to take up places at Oxford and Cambridge. The Oxford and Cambridge Society of India has been offering scholarships every year, but these are dependent on the annual generosity of a few donors.

Expected Start date: April 2017 or later. Applications for the PhD position will be accepted until the position is filled.

A PhD position on modeling cell mechanics and its relation to fluctuation measurements is available at the Theoretical Soft Matter and Biophysics group, Institute of Complex Systems (ICS-2) of Forschungszentrum Juelich, Germany. Their group works at the interface between physics, biology, and chemistry using computer simulations and analytical theory.

Review: The observation of cell flickering (a visible vibration motion of cell membrane) is a standard experimental technique to measure mechanical properties of a cell. Cell membrane fluctuations are directly associated with the cell’s characteristics and properties of cytosol and suspending medium. However, the interpretation of experimental measurements still remains difficult, and existing theoretical models provide the understanding and quantification only for a limited number of cases including simple geometries (e.g., planar, spherical) and certain membrane properties (e.g., bending rigidity, membrane tension). It remains unclear whether it would be possible to quantify a number of cell parameters simultaneously from a single experimental measurement. Also, it is not clear to which extent different cell properties can be separately identified. Finally, in addition to thermal fluctuations, there exists a contribution of active processes (so-called active flickering) arising in experimental measurements, which may occur due to metabolic processes in a biological cell [Turlier, Fedosov et al., Nature Physics 12, 513 (2016)].

Job description: The new team member for this PhD position will be investigating flickering of a cell membrane using mesoscopic simulations. The model is based on the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method, a mesoscale hydrodynamic simulation technique, and is implemented within a highly parallelized code. The main aim is to understand the contribution of different factors to membrane flickering, in particular cell shape, elastic and viscous properties of a cell, and potential metabolic activities. We will focus first on a red blood cell membrane, which includes a non-spherical biconcave shape, membrane elasticity and viscosity, as well as possible active membrane processes. Furthermore, we plan to investigate the effect of cell adhesion to a substrate and of solid-like intra-cell inclusions on membrane fluctuations, which are present in certain diseases, such as malaria and sickle-cell anemia. Finally, membrane fluctuations of more complex cells, which possess internal bulk cytoskeleton, will be studied.

Your profile:

Strong motivation to study and model cell mechanics, and to develop new algorithms.
A master’s degree or diploma in physics, biophysics, applied mathematics, chemistry, or a relevant engineering discipline.
Good programming skills and experience with numerical modeling and particle-based methods.
Experience with parallel programming using MPI and high-performance computing resources is advantageous, but not necessary.
What we offer:

Experienced and friendly international research team with a strong background in biophysics and modeling cell mechanics.
Cutting-edge computational facilities including the on-site top European supercomputers.
Collaboration with the world’s leading experimental groups on cell mechanics.
Three-year PhD program including a competitive salary and social benefits.
To take part in the International Helmholtz Research School of Biophysics and Soft Matter (http://www.ihrs-biosoft.de) with a highly multidisciplinary environment.
How to apply: Please send your application for this PhD position by email to Dr. Dmitry Fedosov (d.fedosov@fz-juelich.de) including

Curriculum Vitae.
Motivation letter (a one page statement of your background and research interests).
Copies of your university degree/s and grades.
Contact information of at least two references.

About This Course

In Environmental Humanities: Remaking Nature, you’ll get a broad overview of an emerging area of interdisciplinary research that reframes contemporary environmental challenges using approaches from philosophy, literature, language, history, anthropology, cultural studies and the arts.

You’ll see examples of active research in this field, and discover why humanities research is vital to understanding and confronting contemporary environmental challenges, such as climate change and global biodiversity loss. The Environmental Humanities places scientific knowledge in dialogue with the key concerns of the humanities: how people think, feel, protest, vote and create. University’s main aim in this course is to consider and create new narratives about how humans and the environment relate to one another.

Why Take This Course?

This is a free online course. The course helps to explore research methods and real-world environmental concerns. Leading experts from the Environmental Humanities programme at UNSW Australia’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences will introduce you to their research in this innovative and interdisciplinary field.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this free online course you will:
-understand why the Environmental Humanities is critical to environmental problem-solving in this age of global environmental crisis;
-have a clear idea of a range of research methods in the Environmental Humanities;
-be aware of opportunities and challenges in this area, and how these relate to global environmental concerns;
-and develop experience in using storytelling to envision new environmental paradigms and ways forward.

Course Format

The course will begin this course by identifying historical ways of thinking about the environment. Through a range of examples, it illustrate how “nature” is a human invention. The MOOC then look at how the role of humans has been conceptualised in opposition to notions of nature, and assert that we were never at the centre, nor in control of the environment.

Having questioned these common “modernist” conceptions about nature, we’ll examine some of the ways in which the natural world is being “remade,” both discursively (in the way we write, speak and think about it) and materially (for instance, in the alteration of DNA and the wholesale transformation of ecosystems).

Finally, the university ask you to join us in creating new narratives about nature that demonstrate greater care and concern.
