Strong indications emerged on Monday that fresh crisis may engulf the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the proposed extension of the tenure of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee.

• ‘Insecurity, unemployment, poor youth engagement biggest challenges’

The performances of Northwest states’ governors, who took office in Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Jigawa States after one year have been marked with outright criticisms by the people who believed that they have not in any way impacted on the welfare of the citizens. When the governors were sworn into office in 2015, millions of people in the various states were full of hopes and expectations that the transformation of the Northwest states by the political leaders in the geopolitical region would be fulfilled.

In other words, they expected the leaders to mitigate their sufferings and improve on the issues of unemployment, agriculture, infrastructure, and security of lives and another socio-economic wellbeing of the people.

Specifically, the governors promised speedy development in the geopolitical region and pledged to provide more employment opportunities and develop agriculture. They also promised to look into the welfare of their people who were confronted with the problems of insecurity like kidnapping, armed banditry, a sectarian crisis which diverted the attention of most of the governors and were forced to divert more funds to security matters. This inevitably slowed down issues of economic and infrastructural development.

For instance, Kaduna State which has been the headquarters of the Northern region since the First Republic, and which is being looked upon by the other Northwest states for political direction was bugged down by insecurity and poor governance vision that fails to provide for the people’s welfare and invest in socio-economic development to enhance the living standards of the people.

However, Governor Mallam Nasir el-Rufai debunked arguments of critics of his first term in office during his 2019 inauguration but highlighted his achievements in the office instead.

According to him, “During our first term, we successfully completed the long-delayed Zaria Water project. We shall continue to build, expand and maintain infrastructure to promote the well-being of our people, enhance commercial activities and attract investors.

“While we have done well to attract over $400m of investments, we need to bring more businesses to create jobs and expand our revenue base. Our endowments in agriculture can benefit from locating more processing activity and agribusiness in our state.

“In 2018, the World Bank ranked Kaduna State as number one state in Nigeria in its Ease of Doing Business rankings. We shall continue to uphold a positive climate for investors. Investment creates jobs. Jobs put food on every table. We will continue to focus on creating an environment in which people can take care of themselves and their families”.

He further stated: “We did our utmost in the first-term to leave no one behind, designing programmes for children, young adults and senior citizens. These programmes will be strengthened to provide skills for the young, and support for the vulnerable. We have demonstrated that we believe that the answer to poverty is to enable people to achieve economic independence. Our approach has been to empower people with the tools to make the most of themselves.

“We would continue to reduce waste, combat fraud and cut costs in government. Our first inaugural address committed us to shrink the size of government. We achieved this by reducing the ministries by more than a quarter, from 19 we inherited to 14, appointing fewer commissioners and significantly reducing the number of permanent secretaries.”

In Kano State, the case was not different, as Governor Abdullahi Ganduje also articulated the achievements of his government and reeled out projects the state embarked upon in his 2019 budget, which he said would attract more development to his state. The governor pointed to the development of infrastructure, provision of water and school construction received the lion share of the state. But his critics have perforated his argument, saying that there was nothing to show in Kano for the huge amount of funds the government spent as capital expenditure.

Analysts are of the view that the proposed pattern of public spending in the state is not different from what it had been since the advent of the administration in 2015, faulting Ganduje’s biggest allocation of N38.31 billion for provision of infrastructure in 2019.

The water sector received the second-highest allocation o N26.4 billion, also followed by the education sector which got the third biggest allocation of N18 billion.

According to Ganduje, “The 2019 budget is designed in a way so as to attain the developmental agenda of the administration which is geared at developing the state in all ramifications”.

Noting that the budget was the fourth and the last budget presentation of his first tenure in office, he said under his leadership, Kano State was among the few states which managed to withstand the impact of the 2016/2017 recession occasioned by the related global financial crisis.

“By maintaining an expansionary fiscal policy stance, we were able to improve the revenue generation drive, with a view to minimizing dependency on the grants coming from the Federation Account,” he said. “This accorded our government the fiscal strength to invest in critical economic and social infrastructure such as water, energy, roads, schools, and health facilities across the state”.

However, Governor Ganduje’s critics in the state continue to taunt him with the alleged Gandujegate, which they say places a dent on his administration.

Besides, Katsina State governor, Alhaji Aminu Masari has insisted that the biggest challenge is in the agricultural sector, pointing out that “the mainstay of Katsina State is agriculture and livestock, and these areas have suffered for the past 30 years either because of the failure or abandonment of agriculture. We need to have capital put into farming and animal husbandry [which will enable the] emergence of small and medium-sized industries that would add value to whatever we produce here, which includes corn, cotton, rice, hibiscus and sesame seed. We believe that a special focus on agriculture will allow us to produce enough for our consumption and to export”.

While apparently saying that his administration would consolidate on his average achievement in agriculture, Masari argued: “there are many opportunities, and all these are centred around agriculture and energy through solar [installations]. There is also an opportunity in processing, added value, value addition. There are opportunities in textiles. There are opportunities along the whole value chain of cotton.

“When we came to power in 2015, we found the educational institutions in a deplorable state. Our priority is foundation education – primary and secondary school – to prepare children for any type of job they intend to do. Those who can make it to higher education can go. Others can train as craftsmen, artisans, skilled workers and entrepreneurs. We maintain the promises that brought us into office in 2015. We said that our number one, number two and number three priorities are education”.

Security in terms of banditry and cattle rustling has been a major challenge for Katsina that forced Masari into some awkward romance with the bandits in the forests. The result of that misadventure has been mixed; residents continue to sleep with one eye opened as activities of bandits are yet to abate.

Meanwhile, what obtains in terms of achievements by the governors of Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi and the Jigawa States when they came into office in 2015 were not fundamentally different. Their citizens continue to demand better welfare and security of lives and property. However, many opinion leaders have criticized the performances of the governors of the Northwest.

The Joint Action Committee of Northern Youths Association (JACOM) National President, Alhaji Murtala Abubakar, who spoke with The Guardian on the performances of the Northwest governors said, “to be the first tenure of the Northwest governors is not so remarkable. Our thinking then was that probably because they were new, so they could not immediately grasp the demands of their responsibilities in the office. It is expected that in the process of learning the ropes, trial and errors are expected. But, all the same, given the opportunities available to them, they have not been able to meet the expectations of northern people to a very large extent.

“The poor performances of these governors can be seen in the area of security. You can see that when the Southwest governors came into office, during their first term in office was when the issue of
security deteriorated in their states. Everywhere, particularly in the Northwest, there were and are serious cases of kidnapping, armed banditry and so on. They could not tackle the problems, up till now. So, fundamentally that was what characterized the tenure of our governors in their first term in office.

“And we expected that they will bring about a remarkable change in the area of agriculture where the Northwest geopolitical region is known for in the past. So many people have been displaced out of their farms because of the issue of insurgency. The governments no longer concentrate on the delivery of good governance to the people; no fertilizers for farmers; the governors could not deliver on good education and the school feeding programme they engaged was a big scam. The statistics provided last year showed that about 13 million children who were supposed to be in school in Nigeria are roaming the streets. And 12 million of these children are from the north, and the Northwest shares the bulk of the figure.

“The governors in the Northwest particularly have not been able to capture our priorities and deliver on their promises. Again, you cannot talk of development without talking of infrastructure in a very fundamental way. For example, in Kaduna, throughout the first tenure of Governor Nasir El-Rufai, you cannot point out to one single infrastructural project that the man actually embarked on.

“So, it was more or less a wasted four years. If you go to Kano State, the story is the same; go to Sokoto and other states in the Northwest, the story is the same. In the case of Zamfara State, the people were not happy with the performance of Governor Yari; that was why they were satisfied with his removal from office”.

Also, the Secretary-General of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Kaduna State branch, Comrade Danjuma Bello Sarki, further criticized the Northwest governors for not delivering the dividends of democracy to the people in the geopolitical region during their first tenure in office, and even now in their second term, noting, “ I will tell you without mincing words that the governors in this geopolitical region failed in their first tenure in office. If you look at the Northwest, there is no state that you can find tangible infrastructural project or development. Likewise, you cannot hear the people praising the governors for the contribution to development.

“There are only a few states in the Northwest that are free from insecurity such as kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes. There is no state in the region today that you can find a good healthcare system. If the Northwest states had developed the healthcare system, they would have been competing with Lagos under this Covid-19 pandemic. And again, there is no state in Northwest that you find the standard of education improving significantly.

“There is no state that you can find the number of school dropouts decreasing. There is no state that employment has increased. Look at the case of Kaduna, where instead of creating employment, the government decided to sack tens of thousands of workers, destroyed sources of incomes of innocent people who are toiling so hard in order to earn a living. The governor has destroyed markets, shops and other small businesses across the state which today have impoverished the people and put them under poverty and abject squalor, such that today government lock up people under this very condition the government created, under the present Covid-19 and people are suffering greatly.

“The insecurity has not in any way hindered them from performing. But today they are hiding under it to show their underperformance. When they first came into office, the insecurity was not as prevalence as it is today. There were pockets of issues of Boko Haram that was even reducing. And they had a relatively stable economy and polity when they assumed their first terms in office. But today things have deteriorated.

“You can see what the governor of Zamfara has done. Under his 100 days in office, he nipped the problems of insecurity in that state in the bud. And that has now provided a veritable opportunity for him to now begin to develop that state. One wonders what is happening to the governors of Kaduna, Katsina and Kano to lag behind in terms of tackling insecurity and developing their states.”

Sometimes i wonder why anyone would open their mouth to declare Davido as a talentless musician, or could there be another definition of talent i do not know about? I’m seriously in the dark.

Talent is “natural aptitude,” talent is “skill,” talent is creativity, confidence, innovation, hard-work, relentlessness all embedded into one. Tell me any of these traits that doesn’t express itself gallantly on Davido’s records. As far as the history of Nigerian music is concerned, he is the singer with the most smash hits. When he makes music, the end product always has the mightiest and most contagious effect.

Since the last 8 years, unlike many Nigerian musicians, he gets better year after year and the most amusing thing is, he isn’t even showing no signs that there would be decline anytime soon. The superstar’s confidence is unrivalled, his love for team work can’t be contested, his penchant for progress, class-without-arrogance never isn’t on anyone’s level in the industry.


Could there be any Nigerian artiste who understands the music game than Davido? Absolutely not! There are times you would understand as a human or professional that consultations help to make a lot of things better, more effective and beautiful than how naturally they should have been no matter how extra-ordinarily talented you are, and he never fails to adopt this when need-be in his quest for making music, hence, the reason he makes really amazing records. The likes of “Dami Duro,” “Aye,” “Skelewu,” “Fia,” “Fall,” “If” and several others had ingenious touch and yet again, he takes that touch if not even a better one to the studio when he made his latest record, “Risky,” which already has become a smash hit record even without already existing for 72-hours. Madness isn’t it?

Well, the purpose of this write-up shouldn’t be jumped past or left for too long. The decision to review “Risky” took me a while to take and that’s because if i pour exactly how i feel about this song, It could be widely speculated that Davido is playing the third-party role in my quest for existing well as a human after the almighty and my family which i might find embarrasing (because he isn’t), lol!

The story around the birth of “Risky” is one that should be given Nollywood film makers an idea about centering a movie idea around making grace and finesse out of mockery, about being overly sensitive to establishing extravagance out of the stiffest opportunities, about turning your antagonists to your protagonists and many more moral lessons that could be squeezed out of the story.

I believe you remember Davido got on an interview with DJ whookid on Shade 45’s Sirius/XM Radio in the United States back in February of this year. In the interview he was asked to do what i believe is his greatest weak point, a freestyle and as expected it turned out to be horrendous. The freestyle immediately went viral with many people finding it to be a spark for sarcastic laugh, ridiculing of the singer and yet another chance to finally pick on him.

A couple of months after, Davido announced that he has made a proper song out of that terrible freestyle which would be an unavoidable dance propellant for everyone that mocked him as a result of the freestyle when it dropped. And fast-forward to the 24th of October, 2019, Davido’s claims turned out to be absoultely right! The song he made out of that weak, viral freestyle is “Risky” and so far so good, it’s looking likely to be the biggest song of 2019.

The Speroach produced song is one that comes with an “instant package.” “Instant package” in the sense that you get love struck and completely held ransome by the first thing that sounds from the record, you wouldn’t have to wait for a second listening or third before you declare your love for the record. It’s an absolute addiction. The vocal delivery of Davido is hundred on this record, the beat is almost near perfection, the mixing and mastering can’t be better and it would be risky not to love the story telling.

Davido didn’t work alone on “Risky” as he sought to add some spice and dynamism to the record, hence, his decision to feature Jamaican dance-hall superstar, Popcaan. The decision to feature Popcaan turns out to be a smart move as the sweet Carribean touch from the Unruly boss helped to elevate the sweetness in the song. “Risky” which is centred around gangster-love is one that would do amazingly well in the coming months and cure a lot of emotional sickness due to its bouncy beat and the vibrating elements added to the instrumental.

Conclusively, as we await the arrival of Davido’s album, “Risky” has done a job even the most professional ushers spread all-around the biggest events and churches in the world would only dream of doing. It has ushered in perfectly the perfect anticipation for his forthcoming album; “A Good Time” and has made it seem like it would be a “risky” thing not to join the wagon of anticipating lots. I wouldn’t want to take a risk… !!!

The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe has expressed grief and worry over incessant fuel tanker explosion leading to many deaths in Onitsha, Anambra State.

The monarch while commiserating with the victims of the two fire incidences in a statement described them as double tragedy within 24 hours which he said called for a serious concern.

“Both cases were as a result of tankers laden with petrol that lost control, then, crashing and spilling their contents that ignited fires. The first was at Upper Iweka which extended to Ochanja market, resulting in loss of lives and property. The second was recorded around Omagba area of Onitsha following similar manner.

The leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, says his late mother, Ugoeze Sally Nmeme Kanu, who reportedly died on August 30 in Germany, was “sacrificed” for the restoration of Biafra.

Kanu said his mother, who passed on at the age of 67 supposedly from the trauma she faced during the attack on their Afaraukwu home in Umuahia by soldiers on Operation Python Dance in September, 2017, was a lover of Biafra and worked with IPOB to see the cause to its present stage.

Whether a revolution can work in Nigeria or not is not the issue. Let President Muhammadu Buhari restructure and go back to the constitution. All Nigerians want to see is a change of the constitution. The present constitution, which has made Buhari the most powerful President in the whole world must be changed; the constitution that was imposed on us by Northern Army. When the military staged the coup in 1966, they suspended the Republican Constitution and they were ruling with their military power. So, when they wanted to go in 1998, they talked of returning to the barracks and so they gave us this constitution; it is not our constitution. Don’t forget that the military is dominated by Northern Muslims. So, all the differences that were ironed out through the Independence Constitution, which didn’t favour the North, the Muslim North who dominated the military inserted them. All the things we are complaining about, resource control, marginalisation and others, were inserted in the constitution by General Abdulsalami Abubakar and the military. It was not a question of what informed them. So, this constitution is not the constitution of the people. The Independence Constitution was the constitution of our leaders and that was what they agreed upon. The constitution we currently have and which we are talking about was made by the military, which is dominated by a section of the country.

Manchester United’s £89m record signing Paul Pogba said there was “no need” to talk after helping Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side start their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 win against Perth Glory.

Second-half goals from Marcus Rashford and James Garner proved decisive at the Optus Stadium.

Pogba provided the assist for Rashford in his first game since stating a desire to leave Old Trafford, a view that has been reinforced twice since by his adviser Mino Raiola.

Popular Nigerian comedian, Seyi Law, has spoken of those he considers to be his greatest enemies in life.

In a post on his Instagram page, the 35-year-old comedian said the people he has trusted the most in his life have been his greatest enemies and one of the most profound lessons he has learnt in life is that strangers will have limited chances of harming a person if close relatives do not talk.

“Yesterday, my wife spotted my first grey hair and I began to ask myself what wisdom have I gained from life. One of the most profound lessons is, if those who live indoors with you don’t talk, those outdoor will have limited chance of harming you,” he wrote.

“It took Judas to sell out Jesus. It took Joseph’s brother to sell him to slavery and it took Ahithophel to destroy David’s house, but in all of these with all their evil, there is a fulfilment of purpose despite the hurts.

“Those who I have trusted the most have been my greatest enemies, always talking without been asked or succumbing to lies about me, but as I leave them behind, God always opens a new chapter that celebrates His Grace and Glory in my life that they always wished they were a part of.”

Former Super Eagles captain, Vincent Enyeama, is keen on a return to football, almost two years after making his last competitive appearance for French club Lille.

Enyeama, 36, last played for Lille in April 2017 and he was released by the 2011 French champions in August 2018.

“I have put the past behind me as I continue to train and hoping to make a positive return.

“I’ve received some offers in Israel and Turkey. But at this stage in life, I want to make family a priority when I need to make a move because they are very settled here in France.

“You are recovering (from an injury) after giving so much to the club and suddenly everything ended like that, respectful football decisions are made – with a new manager and project on the table.

“I quite understand and respect that, yet it was not the kind of end you would want for a beautiful story but this is football.

“I always share positive energy every time I get a chance to see some of our fans, it is a good bond that will always live with me,” Enyeama added.

Enyeama, who played 101 times for the Super Eagles, helped the club to the 2016 French League cup final where they were edged by giants, Paris St-Germain 2-1.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s lawyer Peter Christiansen insisted a warrant for the Juventus superstar’s DNA is a “very standard request” amid the ongoing investigation into a rape allegation.

American Kathryn Mayorga has accused Ronaldo of sexually assaulting her in a hotel in Las Vegas in 2009, with the Portugal captain having come out to “firmly deny” the claims.

German publication Der Spiegel first reported the accusations, which also included the suggestion Ronaldo paid Ms Mayorga $375,000 (£288,000) in 2010 as part of a privacy agreement, preventing her from going public with the allegations.Ms Mayorga filed a lawsuit in an attempt to quash that agreement while Las Vegas police have re-opened an investigation.

On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that police in Las Vegas police had requested a sample of Ronaldo’s DNA, citing “a law-enforcement official with knowledge of the case.”

The report also claims that a warrant was recently sent to the court system in Italy.

Christiansen has previously confirmed that the payment was made to Ms Mayorga, but said documents presented as evidence had been “stolen” and “completely fabricated”.

“To be clear, Mr Ronaldo vehemently denies all of the allegations in the complaint and has consistently maintained that denial for the last nine years,” Christiansen said in a statement in October.

“The documents which purportedly contain statements by Mr Ronaldo and have been reported in the media are complete fabrications. It is my understanding that in 2015, dozens of entities [including law firms] across many different industries throughout Europe were hacked and their electronic data was stolen and captured by a cyber criminal.

“This hacker attempted to sell this data, and one media outlet has now irresponsibly published the stolen documents, significant portions of which were altered and/or completely fabricated. To absolve any doubt, Mr Ronaldo has always maintained, as he does today, that what occurred in 2009 in Las Vegas was consensual in nature.

“While Mr Ronaldo does not deny the existence of the mutual agreement and release, his motivations for agreeing to that resolution have been twisted to say the least.

“Far from any admission of guilt or any ulterior motive, Mr Ronaldo was advised to privately resolve the allegations against him in order to avoid the inevitable attempts that are now being made to destroy a reputation that has been built upon hard work, athleticism and honour.

“Unfortunately, he now finds himself embroiled in the type of litigation that is all too commonplace in America.”

Furthermore, following the report that a DNA sample has been requested, Christiansen game a statement to Omnispor t, saying: “Mr Ronaldo has always maintained, as he does today, that what occurred in Las Vegas in 2009 was consensual in nature.

“So it is not surprising that DNA would be present, nor that the police would make this very standard request as part of their investigation.”

Ronaldo, 33, has scored a league-high 14 goals in Serie A and 15 in all competitions for Italian champions Juve this season, having arrived from Real Madrid in July.

Premier League club, Southampton on Monday sacked head coach, Mark Hughes a day after they played a 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Sunday in the Premier League fixture.

Southampton also said that assistant first team manager, Mark Bowen and Assistant First Team Coach, Eddie Niedzwiecki have also left the club.

Hughes replaced Mauricio Pellegrino in March and successfully steered Southampton to Premier League survival.
