Politics / Dehumanization And Brutalization Of Innocent Civilians By The Nigerian Army by GateKeeper247: 1:54am On Apr 26, 2017
Hello all, with the currently trending video of the brutalized civilian, please I want us to share our experiences and possibly what the law has to protect us from such happenings; because I feel most people don't know their rights that is why these things go unpunished; you see a girl who dates a military man misbehaving and for little to no offense would want to bring her said military spouse to come and cause havoc to innocent Nigerians; I have friends in the Army personally who believe they are mini-gods even when a policeman asks them simple questions they get offended and want to fight/beat up the officer; for crying out loud you all are in the same business; where is the camaraderie, the esprit de corps? The other time I was terribly disappointed a general slapped a barrister to comma; in Abuja the said barrister works for a radio show that claims to be giving voice to the voiceless and the general went scot-free; I remember a general in Zaria who shot a civilian for taking a leak on his fence, nothing happened, A friend recently got beaten to a pulp by a married major of the Nigerian army, because the said friend was with a girl who he was hoping to date and the major seems to be providing for some of her needs remember he is married here; cheating on his wife and he went ahead to beat up this young gentleman with his boys, he cooked up a story that this young man wanted to kill him. Lots of stories like this; Remember the lady in the Lagos traffic? Can't remember how that one ended. So what I want is how does the Nigerian law protect its citizens against these senseless and inhumane thoughts and actions you find with the Uniformed Men; Mostly the Army, cause i think they are the most culpable. The other day a soldier shot dead a civilian at a brothel in Maiduguri, the story/excuse was so dumb, but the so called court martial panel would believe the cooked up story about how civilians saw him and were trying to snatch his gun, so the pattern for most of these guys is this, they know what they're doing is mostly wrong especially for the junior officers and non officer cadre, they come up with flimsy stories to justify their actions. I was terribly disappointed when that general had his cake and ate it too; for sending a barrister to comma, not just any barrister a well known barrister in abuja, on the popular Brekete radio programme of ordinary Ahmed Isah. Compare it with what you find in other climes; there is always this spirit of camaraderie between all their uniform men, even the civilian relationship is commendable.

my dear daughter is that enough reason for you to want to leave? this new place you are trying to go to; have similar if not worse problems no utopian society/church. pray for your parents and seek God he hears you. Salvation is what matters not church which you can achieve if the holy bible is what is used in your church today. God bless and direct you.

Programming / Re: iOS and Android App Development with Xamarin by GateKeeper247: 3:27pm On Aug 13, 2015
If you know XAML; cross-platform app development with xamarin is so so cool, because its cross platform and native all in one; most cross-platform technologies are never native; that is they don't give you native look n feel; they force you to have same look n feel most achieve this using browser addins so you lay html on the platform xamarin on the other hand converts your Xaml to equivalent native code for all platforms you target. It is cool, but expensive and sometimes you are alone trouble shooting your issues and getting feedback from the xamarin team is sometimes slow as the back and forth loop takes time.
For Nigeria, I must confess i am an optimist but in Nigeria; innovation is not celebrated unless you have the right connections A friend who happens to be a very good developer + computer scientist turned down some job offers in the U.K came back to a top-Government I.T Agency with the hope + dreams to revolutionize Nigeria he was warned; cause they prefer to give these jobs + opportunities to Indian firms and expatriates, he tried to save the agency some millions by building in-house apps, he got transferred cause he was blocking their way of taking millions for nothing. If you can best route is to have international clients or if you have some people with the clout to talk to those in power then you're in business. Wish you all the best.
Programming / Re: Programmer In Bank Vs Programmer In Another Coperate Environment by GateKeeper247: 10:38am On Jul 25, 2015
Well most banks use ERPs by big companys like oracle; and sap so most of what you'll do would be integration; only a few banks do actual development; so to stay current in what's happening stay back with the firm; except most don't pay as well as those banks, the banks got bonuses and lots of benefits which your other firm might not give; banks won't stress you writing so much code-believe me. So what motivates you? getting dirty in the mud or getting fat paychecks? My only problem is most Nigerian software firms don't pay well. A colleague recently left my firm for a bank cause he had responsibilities to attend to, as pay was more assured there!

@Velocitron You see object orientation is not that complex it only allows you to model, what you are trying to build from the real world objects; prior to that when building software systems it was mostly procedural; where you just write functions/routines/methods to do things haphazardly it was fine; except well its easy to get messy; then now look at object orientation; where for instance if you're building a system for ships in a shipyard; you try to bring in everything from the real world into the digital world you're modelling; for instance you're need to have or model ship classes from which particular ship objects can be built, and what behaviours do ships have that you're interested in modelling might be things like plungeToDuck, Accelerate, Stop, OffloadVessels, so everything related to this objects go with them in code. and the objects you're trying to build contain their properties/members/variables and methods to manipulate them. Same thing for a hospital system you're need objects/entities such as doctors, nurses, tests, appointments, which are real world concepts you make classes to represent these and build the interaction as it is in the real world in your digital model/system.
Inheritance is a code reuse construct just like we inherit attributes and somethings from our parents in the realworld so in your digitalworld it would be wise to inherit from a general/generic object to more specific objects that; So also is polymorphism (which means many forms) like in the realworld a postgraduate student, an undergraduate student, and a vocational student are all students right; maybe their registration process is somewhat different; so you don't care about the difference you want to be able to call each object/entity and allow it to do its own specific version of a behaviour when called. Interfaces well are contracts that classes who sign or agree to implement must provide definitions for, Got to go; if you want to understand these concepts deeper do give the book "Thinking in Java" by Bruce Eckel a read; best book on object-orientation with java; except its quite abstract. Also read about smalltalk you'd get a hang of what object orientation is. N.B sometimes you might be modelling things like Complex Numbers, Points, Shapes and how to move them around for some reason but its all the same thing at the end of the day. Do have a nice day, Cheers!!!.
Programming / Nigerian Developers & The Code Ninja Syndrome by GateKeeper247: 12:14pm On Jun 20, 2015
I am only an observer mostly on the programming section i have been on this forum; this section (programming) from the start around 2006/2007 actually it was very rewarding the first install i got of netbeans i got it from someone i met here; we worked on projects together, but lately its been mostly noise; little code to show for it; so if i would advice; which i suggest should be taken with a grain of salt; lets have little noise and more code; Show me the code; I see consultants here who come for gigs worth millions claiming they can bring heaven to earth; whereas they don't know their onions; so at the end of the day nothing gets done; I feel we are quick to say I am a senior developer; i am a guru and all; It is very okay to not know something when you don't please say you don't it doesn't kill you cannot know it all; if there's something you don't know and you know you don't know then you go to learn it as Salman Khan of Khanacademy puts it {you need to know one thing; you can learn anything}. Just try to know problem solving the rest is icing on the cake; some years back the community here was pretty engaging i started java thanks to someone i met here; he is good at the art; Like the saying goes all the good programmers are taken; so I end this on this note; lets keep pushing towards achieving craftsman; which is an endless journey as we must always look for better ways; to improve efficiencies of what we do.

Do give "What it really means to be Junior Developer with Jonathan Barronville" by Scott Hanselman on Hanselminutes a listen.

Good morning Developers.

@dhtml18; First of all; i would want to commend your efforts for building a community; It is well deserved, But the part that's got me angry is you saying you're the best javascript programmer in nigeria; on what ground? what have you done to show this?; I see people around who say things like I am a javascript ninja; whereas they've only mastered the abstraction of directly interacting with the user's input or doing few animations; It goes beyond that; actually; except if you're Steven Sanderson, John Resig, Miško Hevery and Adam Abrons and our Nigerian Ugonna; Ibrahim, Augustin and many more who are pushing awesome to it's limits; in google, yahoo; Guess what all these guys have modesty; to know that they don't know it all. And please to everyother person lets allow dhtml18 to have his class.
