Politics / Makinde Will Honour Agreement With Adc, Zlp, Sdp — Oyo Pdp Chair Allays Fears by Gistok8: 12:21am On Jun 14, 2019
The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Oyo State, Alhaji Kunmi Mustapha, has assured that Governor Seyi Makinde would the pre-election arrangement he had with the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Zenith Labour Party, ZLP and Social Democratic Party, SDP.

GISTOK recalls that the governorship candidates of the ADC, ZLP and SDP stepped down and adopted Makinde of the PDP during the just concluded 2019 election. This newspaper understands that there have been fears over whether or not Makinde would fulfill the promises made to the parties.

In the sharing formula, OYO INSIGHT, the ADC and ZLP will take 30 and 15 per cent respectively while the SDP will be given 5 per cent. Mustapha, who spoke on Thursday while briefing newsmen in Ibadan, disclosed that all stakeholders were meeting regularly on how best to handle the matter.

The Iseyin-born  politician explained that there was no cause for alarm as the party would keep to its promise. This is just as he vowed to take over the five states in the South West geopolitical zone in future elections. He said efforts were on to ensure massive supports of the electorates, especially in Oyo and Osun States before the next elections.

“Presently, we are targeting Osun and Ondo states and we are working tirelessly to capture these states,” he said. The chairman promised that the excellent performance of the PDP-led government in Oyo State would enhance its chances in future elections.

On the inauguration of the ninth State Assembly where PDP had 26 out of 32 members, Mustapha urged the lawmakers especially PDP members to unite and stand firm with Governor Seyi Makinde. He admonished them to resist any temptation of working against the interest of the ruling party in the state.

Politics / Maritime Workers Issue 2-week Strike Ultimatum Over Non-payment Of Stevedoring C by Gistok8: 12:03am On Jun 14, 2019
Maritime workers have threatened to embark on strike within two weeks if the Federal Government fails to make international oil companies pay government-appointed stevedoring contractors monies owed them. Mr Adbul-Waheed Adeyanju, the President General, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), issued the two-week ultimatum in a statement in Lagos on Thursday.

Adeyanju particularly urged the permanent secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport to look into the issue so that dockworkers could be paid their salaries and wages. He said that the failure to pay government-appointed stevedoring contractors for jobs done had made it impossible for their workers to be paid salaries, a situation which had led to “the untimely death of members’’.

According to him, failure to effect payment to the contractors will make members of the union to withdraw their services in all the seaports. “Dear stakeholders, we want to use this medium to intimate you and the Federal Government of the non-payment of the stevedoring wages to dockworkers by the International Oil Companies (IOCs) operating in Nigeria.

“On 1st June, 2018, the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) appointed stevedoring contractors to provide stevedoring services at various off-shore jetties and on-shore locations to the international oil companies and other operators.  “It will be necessary to inform you that NPA had held several meetings with these operators to grant access to the government-appointed stevedoring contractors, process their invoices, and effect payment, but unfortunately, the operators have refused to comply with NPA’s directive after one year that the stevedoring contractors were appointed.

“We commend the managing director and management of NPA for the efforts they have made to compel the IOCs to engage the services of appointed stevedores and registered dockworkers in their stevedoring operations. “A stakeholders’ meeting was held on Feb. 28, 2018 organised by NPA in Lagos to sensitise IOCs, jetty owners, and terminal owners,” Adeyanju said.

According to him, the NPA management made it clear that in line with Section 27 OF NIMASA Act, 2007 only government-appointed stevedores and registered dockworkers are empowered by law to solely handle, discharge and embark on loading operations at the ports, jetties and Oil platforms. Adeyanju wondered why the contractors refused to cooperate with the newly-appointed stevedoring contractors since the modus operandi remains the same?.

Politics / Coalition Seeks Review Of Power Sector Privatisation by Gistok8: 11:07pm On Jun 13, 2019
A civil society coalition, Coalition for Revolution, on Thursday called on the Federal Government to review the privatisation of the power sector, in view of what it called the failures of the operators. The Coordinator, Prince Rilwan Ojora, made the call while speaking with newsmen in Lagos. He said that power supply had worsened since the sector was privatised in 2013, as new owners of power assets had not added any value to the sector.

Ojora said that the various power distribution companies (Discos) and generating companies (GENCOS) were billing consumers without delivering service. He said it was high time the government stopped listening to excuses of private power companies for not delivering service, calling for the revocation of their licences and ”re-nationalisation” of the sector . “Privatisation of the power sector to suit the whims of vicious Discos and Gencos has no doubt complicated power problems.

“And these problems within the past few years have assumed ridiculous turn of embarrassing magnitude. “Far more than ever, the distribution companies have not only failed to provide electricity, they have taken it as a priority to harass Nigerians with crazy and estimated bills. “Most houses today are without electricity meters; and this is a conscious attempt to bill consumers for product not consumed.

“It is no wonder you find as common phenomenon a situation where an individual who pays N5,000 as monthly rent receives an electricity bill of N20,000, even when he barely enjoys the service of electricity.” Ojora said that the country had not really added more megawatts since the power firms took over from PHCN, the government-owner firm. “So, we are saying enough is enough. This should not continue. We are demanding the reversal of the privatisation of the sector as Discos and Gencos have failed Nigerians,” he said.

An Ikeja high court on Tuesday sentenced a 36-year-old woman, Stella Gilbert, to death for stabbing her neighbor, Mrs. Stella Godwin, to death during a fight at their residence in Ajegunle, Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the fight was over a bench in the premises of their single room apartments also known as ‘face’me-I-face you’. The fight was caused by an argument over who should be using the bench belonging to their former neighbor.
Justice Raliatu Adebiyi sentenced Gilbert after dismissing her claim of self-defense. The judge held that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

“The defendant, in this case, used a knife on the deceased; by any standard, a knife is a lethal weapon.
“The evidence of PW2 (Prosecution Witness 2), the cousin of PW1 (the deceased’s husband), and that of PW3, the female police officer, was that the deceased was stabbed on the chest.

“The coroner’s report tendered in evidence by PW4 confirmed that the deceased was stabbed on the chest. “The chest is where the heart is; the defendant, by stabbing the deceased on the chest, a very fragile part of the body, clearly intended to cause the most harm to her.

“The death of the deceased occurred as a result of a grievous injury caused by the defendant. The defendant is culpable of the offense of murder,” she said.

The judge remarked that a lot of cases in courts were caused by animosity and violence due to individuals living in close proximity in the metropolis. She said that the situation called for improvement in social housing in Lagos State. She said: “From the evidence, the fight took place in a room; though no evidence was given about the size of the room, it could not have been a very large room.

“The evidence was that the deceased and the defendant lived in a house consisting of rooms occupied by families popularly called ‘face-me-I-face-you’.

“It is worrisome that the level of violence, unnecessary animosity and death, which occur among our citizens as a result of living together in close proximity without sufficient personal space and boundaries, remain unabated..
