GERALD710:
Lol!! In Githunguri,Central Kenya there are 30 litre cows!!!
1-2 litre....Are those cows being reared in the middle of the Sahara
On the other hand,The Sotik KCC factory refuses to take in farmer's milk in the Wet season due to it being excess.
While in 2010,some farmers were pouring milk due to a severe glut that hit the country.
In Kenya, the highlands have pure preeds as the climate is similar to Europe.Cool and wet. There are Fresian,Gurnseys Jerseys and Ashyires all over the place.
In the rest of the country, cross breeds dominate. In Coastal Kenya, which has a similar climate to Nigeria(but free of TseTse flies) the Jersey Crossbreed is the main breed. It produces less milk than the pure breeds(10 litres as opposed to the 30litres of the purebreeds in the highlands) but it has a high butterfat content(5%+) and is used to make full cream milk as well as Double Cream. It is the easiest to make products like butter from.
In Maasailand a breed known as Sahiwal is common. It produces around 7 litres daily but can live in Semi-desert like conditions, tick tolerant and does not mind high temperatures. There is even a Sahiwal Fresian breed that produces more than 10 litres. Gerald can you help with cross breed?
I think Nigerians should visit nations like S.A and Kenya where dairy farming has been a successful venture.

Profgordons:

There is no fixed age actually, most times body weight is used as this is a variable function of age and management practices of which feeding plays a key role. Also some breeds are slower to develop. Generally speaking, this would be greater than 2.5years in any known pure breed in Nigeria. As for the breed of choice, the white fulani wins it. It matures earlier, good fertility, highly drought and disease resistant. It's udder conformity is not bad as well. I hope this helps. My advice is for you to learn as much as possible before investing. Commercial Dairy is not like raising commercial chickens.
ok Sir, As long as I Have people like you as my coach, I think things wont go wrong. grin

the cost of purchase is 50k, how much do you medication and feeding will cost in a month ? I plan to buy wheat offal and eke, since that is the feed most of the people rearing cow in lagos abbatoir uses. wheat offal cost N3K per bag and eke cost N2500 per bag.
Thanks for your response so far, I APPRECIATE.

felixzo1:
my question is ,are you sure it is only two years old, if yes, it can add weight if fed well and treated. what is the price tag
yes, it is two years old. buying feed for this cow in Lagos will cost about N6000 for wheat offal and eke (1 bag each) like how much of this do you think the cow will consume in one months?

Also is it advisable to use this kind of animal for foundation stock?

I was at abattoir yesterday, I saw a female of two years old very lean but with a good frame , the mallam told me that the cow is lean because of low rainfall in north, he said that if I feed it very well in three month, it will be very big. do u you think I should go ahead?
