Career / Women In Tech: How To Stand Out In A Male Dominated Industry by HeelsandTech: 9:13am On Nov 30, 2022
Women have taken the initiative to embrace the evolving of the world into the digital era. They have come out and become bold enough in doing exploits in the tech industry and since then, they have been making waves. However, the journey is not usually lined up with roses along the way and they have to fight to keep their relevance and stand out in the tech industry.

The tech industry is not male dominated and women have a hard time fitting in and getting recognized. The misconception that tech is a man’s thing and women belong to less technical careers is making female recognition in tech all the more worse. How then do women shine brightly in this industry?

Before we delve right into that, let’s look at some of the reasons women are underestimated and pushed to the background in the industry.

Lack Of Support
Most women long for the right amount of support, both financial and emotional, for them to make a mark in the tech industry. Imagine a world where most of the population is gender-based, and then one’s circle or immediate community thinks the same. If there aren’t enough people to support one’s dream, whether family or friends, many women just crawl back into their shells.

Low Self-Esteem And The Feeling Of Incompetence
Everybody goes through this stage but for women in the tech industry, it is worse than people think. So many inventions and ideas springing forth from every nook and cranny and she’s thinking “can I even do this? What can I create? What can I bring forth?” There is always that voice that tells them they can’t do it or they aren’t enough. In fact, some women still go through class after class, believing they don’t have things yet to offer.

Lack Of Voice
Many women have been told that for them to be fully grounded in their various industries, they have to rub the back of fellow individuals who will help them rise to the top. And they fall for these scams, unfortunately. Once they are in, they are used like toilet paper and sometimes aren’t discarded early but they are definitely worn out. Sexual harassment happens. They are turned into messengers and errand girls. Some even turn into people pleasers. They don’t have the strength to fight anymore. They just take what they see and believe that’s all there is to it.

As we have written in our past articles, there are still people who believe that the tech world cannot include women and these doubts about women’s abilities hover in the air. Here are some ways women can make a difference in the tech industry.

Be Confident And Assertive
Confidence and assertiveness are the number one things that can make anyone stand out. Who are you exactly? What do you want? Why are you there? When you can answer these questions, it gives you that morale boost of being able to achieve anything because you already know who you are, your aim and your purpose. Confidence helps you get good jobs. It is one of the things recruiters look for and who knows you may be the one to stand out to them.

Anyone can be confident. Anyone can know what they want to do exactly (assertiveness). What next?

Be Worth Your Onion
If at all you are going to sound the gong about your values and your skills, you must be worthy of yourself and the skills you possess. Nobody wants to work with or employ substandard or mediocre skills. This will give you the respect you deserve and you will stop being mocked or laughed at.

Speak Up
Be a creative contributor wherever you find yourself. Don’t believe or think you don’t have anything worthy of being said. Like we said above, when you are worth your onion, you have to live up to what you are proclaiming. Your opinion has value. So speak, contribute. Promote yourself and your skills. This elevates people’s thought patterns and yours also.

Focus On The Positive
This might look hard because, despite all measures you can take, it might still be hard for you to blend in as a woman in the tech world. Don’t allow it to overwhelm you. Seek out people who can be allies. The narrative changes when you are more positive and look on the bright side. Look at challenges in the face and take them on. You are fierce yet subtle.

Join A Women’s Support Group
If there are none, you could create one if you feel up to it. Many other women feel the same way as you. They feel there are too many other people making waves and there is nothing different about them. Groups like these offer support to women who feel pressured and pressed in the tech industry. It can cut across any company and expand to other companies in the industry. Being a part of groups like this can help keep you motivated as you grow in your field.

Brand Yourself On Social Media.
As a woman, you have many mediums at your disposal and the social media is one of them. Put yourself out there, be loud about what you do. The social media is the fastest way to reach people, especially your target audience and create awareness about yourself and your brand. You start to get relevant that way. The world has gone remote, even offices that were physical before have gone online because they saw the need.

Keep Educating Yourself And Having More Skills.
Another important way to stay on top of the game is to keep being relevant and how do you do this? By not letting your fire die. Learn more. Take more classes. Know new things that you can use in your tech journey. Learning never ends. This way, you are way ahead.

What about you?
So many women have taken some of these measures and have added respect to their names. They are worthy of admiration. How can you join the flow?

Here at Heels and Tech, we especially support women and urge them forward in their dreams and goals in the tech industry. We offer courses that launch you into the tech world which gives opportunities wherever you find yourself.

Career / 7 Reasons Why Women Fail In Technology And What Can Be Done About It by HeelsandTech: 2:25pm On Nov 17, 2022
Ever wondered why there are so few women in technology? We all agree that technology is one of the most significant advancements in the world right now, and it is constantly improving. More hands will be required to make everything work together as it rises.

Men have been in charge of the tech industry since the invention of technology and for many centuries now, despite the fact that we have been brainwashed with the idea that “it’s a man’s thing, women can’t fit in,” and we have drunk from the well of gender bias, segregation, and limitation that appears to be unquestionable.

Additionally, you may have overheard some women making statements that you interpreted as “impossible” about technology and how the task appears to be too difficult to complete. Furthermore, you couldn’t blame them since the majority of them probably encountered some limitations and downgrading from their male counterparts. In all honesty, it’s very challenging to find a job in technology, let alone a hobby. Nevertheless, it’s no longer a secret that women in the tech industry face numerous obstacles and discrimination, and most people would rather assign a male to handle any tech-related duties in their company than a female. Some of the reasons why women struggle in tech could be due to this and numerous other difficulties.

For quite some time, technology was an industry where women were underrepresented. The good news is that it is finally changing, and it is such wonderful news to know that the number of female technologists is increasing every year.

However, if you are reading this, consider yourself fortunate because, as a woman in tech, you will succeed in the field far beyond your contemporaries. However, there are some things you need to know because the journey won’t get any simpler. While it may seem easy at first, as you advance, the going gets harder and there is more knowledge to pick up. The numerous attempts by women to advance their careers or make a difference in the tech industry have all been unsuccessful for a variety of reasons.

Here are a few reasons why women struggle in the tech industry.

Career / Data Analytics Graduates. Join Our Next Cohort by HeelsandTech: 5:58pm On Nov 07, 2022
Our Data Analytics Students graduated on Friday

During the 3weeks training they were grouped into 5 groups of 5 individuals each.

They had several projects to work on. One of the students explained one of the projects Lets read through

They were asked to find out the issue in a company having too many of their employees resign. Which is currently a global concern

Looking at the HR data they discovered they will be analysing more on the employee exit from the company.

A general overview of the company created by visualising the total number of employee in the past 5 years. Also, percentage of male and female. It was broken down to the number of employee in each branch(state).

The employee age group was projected it was noticed that most of the employees are less than 40years. Which the higher percentage of the workforce were full time employee(76%) while 25% were part-time. It was discovered that the company only appraise every 5 years. Imagine ‍♀️

This led to the exit of many employees. 44% of the staff has resigned in 5 years.

The company is now been faced with 100% attrition because the same number of people hired every year are the same number that exit the company. 32% of the employee left voluntarily while 12 % left involuntarily. Their major reason for leaving was career growth and personal reasons.

Their advise to the management staff in this situation is that they should focus more on career progression. There should a yearly portfolio for staff training and all. This will encourage the young workforce to grow on the job and transition to different departments when they desire. The appraisal should also be done yearly instead of every 5 years and also there should be a yearly salary increment and bonus tired up to the appraisal. By doing this hardly will there be any staff leaving because of career growth.

Career / Gender Inequality In The Workspace by HeelsandTech: 12:32pm On Oct 31, 2022
Gender bias in recruitment is the inclination to favor a candidate due to gender prejudice. It's a huge issue in hiring and can sadly affect all stages of the recruitment process

42% of women in the United States say they have faced gender discrimination on the job, including 7% who were denied a job or promotion due to their gender.

Gender bias is especially prominent in STEM fields, where half of the women report facing discrimination in recruitment, hiring, and promotion.

The inequality involves "laying off” female employees because they are pregnant or planning on getting pregnant

A female employee gets a pay cut because she can’t put in as much overtime after just having had a baby, while a male employee cuts back on overtime for personal reasons with no changes to his pay.

Female employees don’t get to add their husbands to their health insurance because it is assumed that the husband has his own healthcare benefits, while male employees can add their wives.

Women are 22% less likely to reach manager level than their male peers, regardless of their qualifications.

There is a wide gap to bridge in hiring process so we won't rest until we see actual results.

Have you had similar experience? How did you deal with it?

Career / Origin Of "Spam" And "Bug" by HeelsandTech: 2:53pm On Oct 14, 2022
On this week’s episode of Discover Tech, we bring to you the origin of some terms such as “Spam” and “Bug” commonly used by most people in the world.

E-mail spam is an unfortunate byproduct of the digital age. It's the modern equivalent of junk mail that gets delivered to your physical mail box, and nobody - except the people that profit from it - like it. What many people may not know, however, is that spam e-mail is named after canned meat.
Spam, as you may know, is a brand of canned pork that has been in production by the Hormel Foods Corporation since 1937. During World War II, it became a key part of soldiers' diets due to its versatility and shelf life. After the war, the canned meat product surged in popularity around the world.
In the early 90s, when the first unsolicited messages started going out in bulk, it reminded one Usenet newsgroup user of the spam skit from Monty Python.
The name stuck, and now, the word "spam" is commonly used to refer to unsolicited communications or performing an action repeatedly.

What about computer bugs? In 1947, computer pioneer Grace Hopper found herself working on a Mark II Computer at Harvard University. It was at this time that her associates discovered a moth had gotten trapped in one of the computer's relays and was causing an error. The operators removed the moth and taped it in their log book, identifying it as the "first actual case of bug being found."
Word got out that the team had "debugged" the computer, hence leading to the phrase's use in computing and pop culture.

Did you learn something intriguing today? Share more tech words and their origins as well with us!

Workflow rules are considered as a container that consists of two components:

A. Criteria:

It consists of the condition which if found true then the actions should take place.

B. Actions:

It consists of the actions that should be performed when the criteria for workflow rule are met.

Every Workflow rule must be based on a single object because when a rule is defined this object influences the fields that will be available to set the criteria.

Workflow lets you automate standard internal procedures and processes to save time across your organisation.

For example, the criteria is “Have Coronavirus Symptoms” and the action is “Stay At home”. If the criteria isn’t met (No Symptoms), then the action isn’t executed.

Moving to a different country is oftentimes a difficult decision and requires careful thought. Making a rash decision to relocate often leads to many awful situations you wouldn’t want to get entangled in.

Before you pack your bags you have to make sure you have done a lot of research about the country you want to move to and consider work opportunities over there:

With your skillset what kind of job are you likely to get?
Knowing the answers to these questions should inform your decision to relocate and if it is the right time to move. The labour market in each region is slightly different and in some places, you must hone certain skills to keep yourself relevant in the workforce.

Career / 5 Best Tips For Women Transitioning Into Tech 2022 by HeelsandTech: 5:36pm On Sep 21, 2022
These tips for women transitioning into tech are meant to help ease the transition process. We were made to believe that the tech industry is just for men, and women were better off with non-tech jobs. At one point every woman in the world bought this lie, but a few others changed their minds and aimed to make a difference. If you are reading this article, you are probably one of those women who have dared to unravel, own and create an impact in the tech world.

Loads of rumours and misconceptions fly around concerning tech and without checking the facts, many people fall for it. One of such misconceptions for instance is that tech is all about writing codes. People who promote this false information make it seem like you can never excel or transition into tech if you can not memorize functions, build APIs, etc. If you have ever been scared by such statements, you would be glad to know it is all a lie. Tech does not necessarily require writing codes, as a matter of fact, a number of tech professions exist which do not need you to scribble as much as a “Hello World”.

Career / What Is Data? by HeelsandTech: 11:22am On Sep 06, 2022
Data, the term, can be a bit overwhelming due to the fact that it could mean different things such as Primary Data, Secondary Data, Internal Data, External Data, Big Data, Alternative Data etc.

Internal and External Data Sources

Internal Data: Data you own, create and control e.g. an organization’s visitors’ record. Examples are the information recorded from bio and contact fill-ins of visitors.

External Data: Data from outside sources. They are publicly available data on electoral statistics, tax records, government data.
Can data be both external and internal? Yes.

Primary and Secondary Data Sources

Primary Data - This is data collected yourself e.g. from an interview. i.e. You create the questions, served it, and collected the answers.

Secondary Data – Data collected from another person or an application run by another person. Your website data was collected by Google Analytics or any other back end tracking system.

Qualities of Data
1. Veracity – Quality or trustworthiness of the data. i.e. How accurate (reliable) is your (collected) data?
2. Value – The worth of extracted data. Data is useless if it cannot be turned into value.
3. Variety – The different types of data we now use exist in the form of text, pictures, GIFs, videos, URLs etc.
4. Volume – Incredible amount of data generated per second.
“Social media is the number one creator of Data Globally” – IBM
5. Velocity – This is the speed at which vast amounts of data are generated and or collected.
A good example is Twitter, an average of 6,000 tweets per second and 500 million per day. That is massive data rate that requires big data technology.
The 4Vs of Big Data: Volume, Veracity, Velocity, Value

Tools for analysing data include Power Bi, SPSS, STATA, Data and information visualization, Tableau, Excel, Google analytics etc

Anomaly detection (aka outlier analysis) is a step in data mining that identifies data points, events, and/or observations that deviate from a dataset's normal behavior. Anomalous data can indicate critical incidents, such as a technical glitch, or potential opportunities, for instance, a change in consumer behavior.

Anomaly detection finds application in many domains including cyber security, medicine, machine vision, statistics, neuroscience, law enforcement and financial fraud to name only a few. Anomalies were initially searched for clear rejection or omission from the data to aid statistical analysis, for example to compute the mean or standard deviation. They were also removed to better predictions from models such as linear regression, and more recently their removal aids the performance of machine learning algorithms. However, in many applications anomalies themselves are of interest and are the observations most desirable in the entire data set, which need to be identified and separated from noise or irrelevant outliers.

Semi-supervised anomaly detection techniques use a normal, labeled training data set to construct a model representing normal behavior. They then use that model to detect anomalies by testing how likely the model is to generate any one instance encountered.

A quick one for Product Managers and Product Marketers

A buyer persona is a detailed description of someone who represents your target audience. This persona is fictional but based on deep research of your existing or desired audience. You might also hear it called a customer persona, audience persona, or marketing persona.

Buyer personas are one of the most (if not the most) important parts of any marketing strategy, and throughout every part of the Inbound process. If you can’t engage with your potential customers in a relevant and contextual manner, you will lose their trust and interest. Once you have lost someone’s trust and interest, it’s hard to get that back. You can’t make a second first impression!

Career / Major Interview Tips For Salesforce Adminitrator Role by HeelsandTech: 4:22pm On Aug 17, 2022
It is important that you go for the interview with a good understanding of what the hiring manager is actually seeking, not just the job title of the role.
You should either have a job description to review or a Recruitment Consultant that you can ask.

2. you know that the hiring manager is looking to integrate to a specific payment gateway, use an Appexchange product or tool that you have used before, or build a product for an industry that you have past experience with – make sure you write down your knowledge and achievements and take them along on a notepad. This is where the project you worked on during your training comes in. You can record and share your screen with the recruiter during the interview. A student of ours landed a job following this principle

3. You should also check the company's social channels (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook etc) to get a feel of the culture of the business. You should also check their LinkedIn pages, hashtags, Google news… anywhere that information is stored online about the business.

4. Honesty is always the best policy and you won’t believe how many people ruin their chances of securing a role by panicking and attempting to answer a question they know nothing about. Simply saying “I haven’t worked with X,Y,Z but I would love to get some experience in that space and I am very willing to learn” will always go down better than claiming to know something that you don’t.
