The naira fell to a record all-time low of 414 against the United States dollar on Sunday, with currency dealers predicting further pressure in the forex market this week.

The slippery decline of the local currency against the Dollar came barely five days after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had banned 9 commercial banks from the forex market for failing to remit the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) $2.334bn into the Treasury Single Account (TSA) in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive last September.

“Also note that you will not be able to export one litre of crude in the Niger Delta, just intensify the oil exploration in the North East. As for the ones in the Niger Delta, forget about it because the Nigeria government won’t export a drop from our land,” the statement said.

The Nigerian currency, Naira has continued its free fall at the parallel market as it dropped 2 points to trade at N377/$1 today, July 27.

This comes hours after the local currency had rallied back to regain strength over the dollar, trading at N375/$1 yesterday, from the N378/$1 rate it was on Monday, July 25.

However, a Bureau de change source in Lagos state, urged the CBN to integrate only licensed BDC operators into the forex distribution channel.

According to him, the dollar is scarce because there is huge demand for the greenback at parallel market.
