Career / See How This Young Man Turned His Career Around Despite Graduating With A 2.2 by HiDee2(m): 4:23pm On Nov 06, 2018
As a young graduate, facing life in Nigeria after graduating from the university with a second class lower (2.2) may look really bleak. If you can, study hard to finish with a first class or a second class. But if after all is said and done, should you finish with a 2.2, life does not have to end – you can always turn your career around. This is my true life story.

My initial thought was to only share this story with colleagues on Wastesmart Initiative’s closed Whatsapp group but following the massive feedback from members after I shared it on the group, I realised I had to share my story with the bigger youth population in Nigeria. Thus, my motivation for sharing this personal story of how things took a positive turn in my career is that I hope my story inspires you to find the courage to also turn your career around and go on to fulfill your dreams.

There is no law that guarantees that you will get all that you deserve. So also, there is no law stopping you from getting anything good in life.

I know a young man that graduated with 2.2 from University of Ilorin (Unilorin) Biology Education, Ilorin, Nigeria. However, he has loved Genetics from his High schools days, and desired to do Masters in Genetics & Molecular Biology at the best University in Nigeria, University of Ibadan (UI), Ibadan, Nigeria.

Are you kidding me?

With a 2.2 (Second Class Lower), he was not even convinced he would qualify for a Master’s in any Nigerian University, not to talk of the highly competitive MSc Genetics program at UI… Back then, it looked unattainable. But still, he tried and applied.

He followed his gut, applied, and competed fair and square during the entrance exams and screenings. Eventually, he got the admission.

Upon graduation, he finished as one of the best in his set, published papers in international journals, became renowned for his research and data analysis prowess and all of that.

However, no job for him until he accidentally stumbled on the signpost of a Security Consulting firm while he went to register his MTN SIM card. He walked into the company, applied for job, got invitation for interview and sat to compete with over ten other well qualified applicants with intimidating CVs.

Thank goodness. He got the offer and replaced a Lawyer as Head of Corporate Services. This made his first organised job.

Within two years of joining the company, he was made the Head of the Risk Management Department, a post that enabled him to start attending Management Team Meetings.

Isn’t that unbelievable? From Education Biology to Genetics to Security Consulting.

But the story is not over...

It's sad that this nuisance of a governor is using the president to shine. Buhari should blame himself for this shiit anyway. He either act decisively on this herdsmen and farmers crisis or it's going to bring the downfall of his government. If the security agencies are up and doing, Danjuma wouldn't have given such a controversial advice to his people.

The government is not doing enough to resolve the herdsmen vs farmers crisis and more sadly, the government is not doing enough to change the narrative that it is backing the herdsmen. The time for the government to act firmly and change the narrative is now.

Thank you so much. It's gladdening to know some still put on their thinking cap.

All these wouldn't have been necessary had the President squarely addressed the herdsmen issue rather than the kids gloves with which he had attended it.

isn't sad that every Tom, Dick and Harry including Gov. Fayose now have to tell the President what to do. Incredible.

For those indifferent or supporting the president's rather weak response to the crisis, may the destruction of the marauding herdsmen visit your families and wipe away all you've laboured then. When that happens, you will k ow how it feels and feel what others are feeling. Maybe your mouth would open by then.

Business / Professor: We Gave A N30m Quotation But They Spent N200m (interview) by HiDee2(m): 11:23am On Apr 27, 2017
WS: Is the Government aware of the prospects of and how much we can as a country benefit from waste management?
Prof : I’m sure they are not that blind. They know what is happening but I have a feeling that they don’t care. Unfortunately, what they are aiming at is what they can gain immediately without wasting time as individuals but not as an Institution. While we continue to encourage this (recycling) venture, the (what’s-in-for-me) mindset has to be done away with.
.
WS: As Nigerians, we understand the problems with the bureaucracy in our polity. In response to that and other avenues for public wastages, one of the models
wastesmart.org is advocating is removing or greatly minimising government’s involvement in projects of this sort. Would that be ideal? Is it a workable model?
... The UN Habitat also said that if any State could volunteer to start a project, they would give counterpart funding. Sustainable Ibadan Project played a very prominent role in this programme in bringing all stakeholders. Nobody came forward after the training programme. All of them were there in the training programme and they appreciated it but at the end of the day, nothing...
.
And then, we went to Ondo State when the Late Segun Agagu was the Governor. In Ondo State, there was a problem there again, we provided the knowledge. What we proposed was not a gigantic project but a very small scale one but the Governor committed it into the hands of some people and they said “No, we want a very big one for the entire waste we want to manage”. We gave a N30 million quotation but they spent several times more than that, but they spent several times more than that (N200 million). Several Project Managers came in and left but the challenges were not addressed by any of them.

Education / Can You Imagine What These Students Did To Their Former Teacher? by HiDee2(m): 5:34am On Mar 05, 2017
Pictures like this one in which grown up men fall on their knees (and stay in that posture for many minutes) in obeisance to a fellow "man" are only common with politicians, traditional rulers or powerful religious figures. But the man in that picture whom all those old men knelt before is not a politician, an oba, a pastor nor an imam. He was simply a teacher who made a difference with his life. And his name is Dr. Joseph Olalere OJELEYE.

.
Yesterday in Gbongan, Osun State, people gathered from far and nigh to celebrate the life of this man and to launch his biography.

.
Baba started school late. He entered secondary school at the age of 19 but he didn't let his age hinder him from achieving his dreams. Baba went on to bag an MSc and a PhD later in his life.
.
In spite of the many opportunities he got after he bagged his PhD, Pa Ojeleye decided to continue teaching in a secondary school for his love for teaching and his commitment to molding his students lives. How many would us would do that today?

.
He doesn't have 49 cars, he doesn't even have houses in Abuja, Lagos, Dubai, New York and London, he doesn't have $2million in his account at the expense of his countrymen. He didn't have all that but he has the most important of all, honour!

.
Today, many of his former students, a Senate of professors, captains of industry and folks whose lives turned out well because of his "small" inputs were on hand to honour him. One of his former students, now a Professor, flew in from Canada, about a day or so to the event, just for the occasion and he is due to fly back today. All for a man who was a teacher.

.
Also present at the event were a retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Justice Bolarinwa Oyegoke Babalakin; the Olufi of Gbongan, Oba (Dr) Adetoyese Oyeniyi; former Mobil Chairman, Mr. Olumide A. Onakoya, Dr. Kunle OJELEYE, the son of the author and; Mrs Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, a columnist with Premium Times Nigeria and one of the reviewers of the book.

.
At 81, Pa Ojeleye's life is only a remainder that you don't have to steal to be respected. You don't have to be a politician or a pastor or sheikh to impact lives, to move your community forward or to earn people's goodwill.

.
Nigeria may be passing through this storm it is passing through right now, politicians may be ready to throw the country to the dogs, public life may have become a joke and an avenue for quick riche, but it wasn't so in the past. Let's not forget the simple things that once made our country great: values, selfless service, genuine love for people.

.
May we survive this storm. May our country emerge stronger. God bless Nigeria

Science/Technology / Indian Man Turns Plastic Wastes Into Raw Material For Road Construction (photo) by HiDee2(m): 9:55am On Jan 19, 2017
By the turn of the century, a lot of noise was being made to reduce the use of plastic and control the waste it was generating. It was during this time when, one evening, Prof. Vasudevan saw a doctor on a TV program saying that plastic ‘dissolved’ in water bodies caused pollution.
.
“This set me thinking. Since plastic is a product of petroleum this theory of the doctor had to be false. There was a lot of serious talk about banning plastics all over the country and finding solutions to thebwaste plastic strewn all over. I decided to take up the challenge to experiment with waste plastics and see if I could find a solution,” he says.
.
Laboratory results of mixing waste plastic with heated bitumen and coating the mixture over stone proved positive. He implemented the use of plastic waste on a road constructed inside the premises of his college in 2002.
.
“To date, this stretch of road is still going strong,” he says.
.
In 2006, the Thiagarajar College of Engineering received the patent for this technology.
.
The entire process is very simple. The plastic waste material is first shredded to a particular size using a shredding machine. The aggregate mix is heated at 165°c and transferred to the mixing chamber, and the bitumen is heated to 160°c to result in good binding. It is important to monitor the temperature during heating...
.
Plastic waste helps increase the strength of the road, reducing road fatigue. These roads have better resistance towards rain water and cold weather. Since a large amount of plastic waste is required for a small stretch of road, the amount of waste plastic strewn around will definitely reduce.

you,eazybay,egunmogaji,hidee2,okpurukata seems to be the only people with a working conscience on this thread, at first the ops writeup was sensible and okay but down the line it reeked of fraud, though we all have our ways of doing things and making profits, I don't think its a thing to be applauded for, his only business Idea I saw nothing wrong with is the tomatoe business, cuz of the scarcity, stress, safety at that time, and irrespective of that I'd say I prefer humans first before money, so many people here are blinded by the figures they saw, wow cool money! duh; typical of Nigerians though, anything for money goes, I screen grabbed some numbers here ama reach out to later, their ideas seemed legit to me, you make all the millions in the world to what end? parked a vehicle today and took a bike in the same street, the bike had a lone crash leaving me with knee bruises,it happened withing seconds, while crashing on the highway, I was like is this the end? we all need put this into cognisance, our life shouldn't revolve around money, and wealth accumulation alone, at least not to the detriment of others, I still respect the ops personality though, but am skeptical about the legitimacy of his ordeals.

If there are legit business ideas that are also sustainable in the short and medium terms, please, I wouldn't mind. But as for willfully bribing officials and presenting falsified records again and again, I wouldn't do that. I won't be part of the problems we are trying to solve as a country!
And one more thing, I strongly believe that young people can make a difference, that they can make good money from clean and brilliant business ideas. What is needed are a solid/well researched idea, good planning, a good team, and sometimes, a good coincidence. We can.

Abeg, I don't mind such ideas. This is the year to take big, informed risks. We could talk more offline. Thanks.

c. The Personal travelling allowance way / The Form A way

IDEA
I need not explain what P.T.A or Form A is. You can google them up if you dont know what is is.
Here we meet we a travelling Agent what he does is tell his clients travelling to european countries, Dubai in most cases, and are not interested in applying for the P.T.A. He brings this clients to us with their flight details and we all, go to the bank make the application aand when the application are granted we resell the dollars off at the black-market rate and from the profit we make necessary settlement to various parties involve.

Funding / Profit
As at then we get $4000 at N199 and end up selling then at N350 per $1. Banking around N151 per $1 for $4000.
Profit = 350 - 199 = 151 * 3,000 = N453,000 per each Traveller.
After this make necessary settlement of going to like 151,000 baking close to N300,000 from a person.

Difficulties:
- Some banks stopped processing P.T.A. This wasnt a problem, easy as switching banks.
- Some banks started loading the mony into the ATM cards of the Travellers. We overcomed this, how we did i wont go into details

Form A

I am trying to be-careful how i explain Form A to the public. Everything involved in Form A is highly sensitive and not something to be said openly. I will just give a short post.

Here i and a Nairalander IziKJon had connect to the family of the owner of a University somewhere in the world ( Dont ask me where). We make applications for Form A and have the acount of the institution funded by the government and then make withdrawals from the Foreign University's account.

Thats all close your ears. Dont ask me questions further on this i wont explain.
Profit: We get them official rate and have them sold as offshore funds outside the country at black-market rate. Banking profit.

cc: IziKJon i see you Gidado_Arewa

Disclaimer*
I have to limit what i write on the public domain. Posterity sake.

Much as I love Ymodulus' bravery and business dexterity, from his explanations, some of these businesses have proven to be completely illegal!
.
If all the things he wrote were true, then, filing false information repeatedly to authorities and paying/bribing people (including bank and government officials) to help you beat the law in order for you to make easy profit at the expense of the country is nothing to be happy about. With these actions of his, he is part of the reason the Naira plummeted drastically against the Dollar, and part of the reasons for the ongoing general suffering in the country.
.
I like him, but these excesses are a no-no for me. I don't know about you though... And I hope he stops giving details of the shady businesses, lest some people use it against him later on or worst still, more young people are tempted to go that path, rather than more honourable business options... I am hoping I am wrong on this!
.
For his clean and brave business initiatives, he gets full kudos from me. But for the shady businesses amongst those he listed, he gets no praise. If it can be proven he broke the law, not the least willfully, the law should take its course!
.
We shouldn't celebrate what is wrong, no matter who does or benefit from it! His unethical actions. whether we like it or not, are part of the recession and the current stark economic realities in Nigeria. And by the way, he just made business harder for people who might genuinely want to do business for adding value sake and making honest profits. How do you expect those Chinese to view other innocent Nigerians? This is terrible. And to see some young people hail and covet such dubious skills and unpatriotic tendencies as his, breaks the heart!

Food / See How You Can Minimize Food Waste And Save Money During This Festive Season by HiDee2(m): 10:34am On Dec 24, 2016
It’s that time of the year again when we celebrate with loved ones. However, a major downside of festive seasons is that, in spite of the efforts that go into planning for and hosting our friends, colleagues, neighbours and family, so much food gets wasted and ends up in the dustbin. To assist you in checkmating this drawback, we have drawn
up a list of seven simple tips to minimize food waste this festive season:

1. Get a fair estimate of the number of guests you will be hosting.
2. Go shopping on time but buy only the stuff you will really be
needing
3. If you are trying out new recipes for the first time, proceed with
a handful rather than the entire ingredients
4. If you are ordering food, make sure your orders are delivered
fresh, to taste, and at the right quantity!
5. When entertaining your guests, ask for their preferences, then,
serve appropriately and moderately.
6. Share food with neighbours
7. No waste is an absolute waste.

Health / New Cases Of Bird Flu In Europe Threaten To Make Christmas Bleak! by HiDee2(m): 2:22pm On Dec 12, 2016
Poultry keepers have been told to keep their birds inside to protect them from a highly-infectious strain of avian flu in Europe. Chicken, turkey and duck owners must keep them indoors for 30 days or take steps to separate them from wild birds. The H5N8 bird flu strain has been found in poultry and wild birds in 14 countries including Germany and France...

Similar restrictions have been introduced in Scotland and Wales, but not Northern Ireland. Farmers are being asked to look for signs of infection and to take robust disinfectant measures. Members of the public are also being told to report cases of dead wild waterfowl – such as swans, geese and ducks – or gulls, or five or more dead birds of other species to Defra. Defra said it had increased its surveillance, and keepers are being urged to make sure feed and water is not accessible to wild birds...

John Fishwick, of the British Veterinary Association, said the fear was that as migratory birds, particularly water fowl, fly across Europe they have contaminated farms and caused outbreaks in commercial poultry. Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom urged bird keepers to adopt the measures to protect poultry...
.
With the new cases recorded in parts of Europe, experts urge farmers in Nigeria as well as relevant authorities to be at alert and to urgently put in place, including at the nation’s borders, necessary measures to prevent and/or minimize the spread of the re-emerging avian outbreak.
