Did You Thank Allah for Your Eyesight? A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: "I am blind, please help." There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words. Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, "Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?" The man said, "I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way." What he had written was: "Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it." Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing? Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective? "It is He, Who has created for you (the sense of) hearing (ears), sight (eyes), and hearts (understanding). Little thanks you give." [surah Al-Mu'minun; 78]Did You Thank Allah for Your Eyesight? The Patient Old Man When passing through a mountain pass, a bedouin (villager) once came across an old man who was blind and who seemed to be afflicted with various ailments all over his body. It was clear that he was wasting away. He was even paralyzed and was constantly forced to remain in a seated position. The Bedouin could clearly hear him say, "All praise is for Allah, Who has kept me safe from ailments with which He has tested many among His creation; and He has indeed preferred me over many among those that He created." "My brother!" exclaimed the bedouin. "What have you been saved from? By Allah, I think that you have been afflicted with every single kind of ailment!" "Go away from me," said the old man, as he raised his head. "Do I not still have a tongue with which I can pronounce His Oneness, and with which I can remember Him every single moment? And do I not still have a heart with which I can know Him?" These words of the old man were enough for the bedouin to repent to Allah for his sins and ask Him for forgiveness. The Patient Old Man When passing through a mountain pass, a bedouin (villager) once came across an old man who was blind and who seemed to be afflicted with various ailments all over his body. The Power of Istighfar This story about "Istighfar" is from the life of Imam Ahmed Bin Hanbal, who is considered as a renowned scholar of Islam and a famous theologian. Imam Ahmed is also considered to be the founder of the Hanbali school of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and is one of the most celebrated Sunni theologians, often referred to as the "Sheikh ul-Islam" or the "Imam of Ahl al-Sunnah." During his old age, while Imam Ahmed was traveling he stopped by a town. After the prayers, he wanted to stay for the night in the masjid yard because he didn't know anyone in the town. Owing to his humility, he hadn't introduced himself to anyone thinking that if he did, he would be welcomed by many people. Failing to recognize Ahmed bin Hanbal, the caretaker of the mosque refused to let him stay in the mosque. As Imam Ahmed was quite old, the caretaker had to drag him out of the mosque. On seeing this, a baker from a nearby place felt pity for this man (Imam Ahmed) and offered to be the host to him for the night. During his stay with the baker, Imam Ahmed observed that the baker would constantly recite Istighfar (seek forgiveness from Allah). Imam Ahmed asked the baker if the constant practice of saying Istighfar had any effect on him. The baker responded by telling Imam Ahmed that Allah had accepted all of his duas (supplications), except one. When he asked him what dua was it that hadn't been accepted, the baker replied that he had been asking Allah to provide him the privilege to meet the famous scholar Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal. On this, Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal said that Allah had not only listened to his dua but had dragged him onto his (the baker's) doorsteps. [Summarized from Al Jumuah magazine, vol 19, issue 7] This story is a reminder of the power of saying Istighfar (seeking forgiveness) frequently. |

Education / FINALLY! (ASUP) Begins Indefinite Strike Today Oct. 4th 20. by Highbe(m): 9:46am On Oct 04, 2013 |
Latest educational news reaching our news desk today, is that the Nigeria Polytechnic Lecturers has commence Indefinite Strike Today, the 4th of October 2013. According to the National President of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Mr Chibuzor Asomugha, on Thursday directed the union members nationwide to commence an indefinite strike starting from today, the 4th of October, 2013. According to Mr. Chibuzor Asomugha who told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos state that the directive became imperative following the Federal Government’s failure to meet the union’s demands. He went further to explained that two months after the union had suspended its previous strike, nothing had been done by the government to address the union’s demands. NAN also recalled that the decision to embark on this indefinite strike on October 4 was reached at the 75th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the union in Bida, Niger State on September 28th 2013. We also did recalled that ASUP embarked on a nationwide indefinite strike on April 29 over the Federal Government’s failure to address its grievances. The strike was later suspended on July 17th pending that their needs will be met by the federal government. The suspension was as a result of the intervention of the Joint Committees on Education of the Senate and the House of Representatives.Mr. Chibuzor Asomugha also told the News agency that it was over two months that the union suspended its strike, but the Federal Government had not fulfilled its pledge to address the issues. “Nothing has been done since we suspended our strike in July,” he said. Mr. Chibuzor Asomugha also pointed out that the union gave the Federal Government up till September 16, — a two-month grace period — within which to negotiate and settle the issues, but noted that nothing had been done so far by the federal government. The president also said that the Federal Government had not fulfilled its bargain in the 2009 agreement with the union. The union had, earlier in a statement on Monday, notified the Federal Government of its decision to go on strike if the government did not honour the agreements reached, but according to our informant, the federal government did almost nothing about the strike. NAN also reported that the union’s demands include the possibility of lower cadres rising to CONTISS 15, and the release of a white paper on the visitation panel to the federal polytechnics. |

Islam for Muslims / How Should We Observe Laylat Al-qadr? by Highbe(m): 9:20pm On Aug 04, 2013 |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger. Laylat Al-Qadr is the most virtuous night in the year. Almighty Allah says in the Qur'anWe have indeed revealed this (Message) in the Night of Power: And what will explain to thee what the night of power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.) (Al-Qadr 97:1-3) Thus, every Muslim should strive hard not to miss the opportunity in getting multiple rewards in these blessed days. One should draw nearer and nearer to Allah to get the blessings of Laylat Al-Qadr in this last third of Ramadan. First; Imam Ahmad and Muslim narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to strive harder in worship during the last ten days of Ramadan than he ever did at any other time, praying, reciting the Qur’an, and makingdu`aa’. Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated from `A’ishah (may Allahbe pleased with her) that when the last ten days of Ramadan came, the Prophet (peace and blessings of be upon him) would stay up at night and would wake his family up and would abstain from marital relations. Second; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) enjoined staying up and praying on Laylat Al-Qadr out of faith and in the hope of reward. It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Whoever stays up and prays on Laylat Al-Qadr out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will beforgiven.”(Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim) The previous hadith indicates that it is prescribed to observe Laylat Al-Qadr by spending the night in Prayer. Third; one of the best supplications that may be recitedon Laylat Al-Qadr is that which the Prophet (peace and blessingsbe upon him) taught to `A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). At-Tirmidhi narrated, and classedthe report as authentic, that `A’ishah said: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, if I know which night is Laylat Al-Qadr, what should I say on that night?”He said,“Say: Allaahumma innaka `afuwwun tuhibb al-`afwa fa`affu `anni (O Allah, You are forgiving and You love forgiveness, so forgive me).” Fourth, with regard to specifying which night of Ramadan is Laylat Al-Qadr, this needs specific evidence, but the odd-numbered nights during thelast ten nights are more likely than others, and the night of the 27th is the most likely to be Laylat Al-Qadr because that is mentioned in the Prophetic hadiths. Allah Almighty knows best. 1 Like |
Islam for Muslims / Ramadan Coming To A Close: How Did It Go? (share) By Shari`ah Staff by Highbe(m): 8:51pm On Aug 04, 2013 |
ASALAM ALAYKUM WARAHMOTULLAH WABARAKATUHU. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to strive more in worship during Ramadan than he strovein any other time of the year; and he would devote himself more in the last ten nights of Ramadan than he strove in earlier part of the month.(Muslim). The holy month of Ramadan is wrapping up, with its blessed days and spiritual nights. It’s quite noticeable how the sacredness of Ramadan makes the days swirl along us like a wind. Now the question is: How have we fared in the past blessed daysand nights? One should ask himself this question and try to give his practices a critical assessment. How is your Ramadan plan going? How many Qur’anic Surahs have you memorized? Have you ever missed a Tarawih prayer? Ever missed a chance of good deeds in Ramadan? Try to think deeply and rate your deeds for the past days. The good news is that we still have a chance in the coming few days to make it up, especially in these last ten days, including a special night of power which is more rewardable and precious in the eyes of Allah than thousand nights. So share with us how you have fared in the past days of Ramadan. Perhaps you can incite other readers as well, providing them with tips on how to make itup. |
