Politics / Africa's Richest Woman, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija Joins Lagos Governor Race by iamnigeria: 9:52pm On Jan 10, 2014
There are indications that the richest woman in Africa, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija, may have joined the Lagos State governorship race, as her posters have flooded vantage areas of the state.

LEADERSHIP FRIDAY observed that her posters have been pasted on the streets and Lagos State Government Secretariat, Alausa soliciting the support of Lagosians for her ambition for the governorship seat.

The poster which did not specify the political platform under which the oil mogul hopes to contest had inscriptions like, "2015: Vote Folorunsho Alakija for Governor."

Lagosians who commented on the posters told our correspondent at separate interviews that the state needs her wealth of experience to achieve its agenda of becoming Africa's modern mega city.

Although it was not clear whether the posters originated from her as at the time of filing this report, she is seen by many as a woman of impeccable character that could provide the needed leadership to move Lagos forward.

Politics / N262 Million For Nigerian Prisons Because Of James Ibori by iamnigeria: 9:32pm On Jan 10, 2014
The British government has said it will give Nigeria one million pounds [about N262 million] to assist on comprehensive reformation of her Prisons.

United Kingdom's Minister of Justice, Mr. Jeremy Wright revealed this while responding to questions from newsmen when he visited the Nigerian Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro on Thursday to finalise the process of prisoner exchange between Britain and Nigeria.

Mr. Wright further disclosed that under the agreement which he signed, several Nigerians in British prisons including former Governor of Delta State, James Ibori would be repatriated to complete their jail terms in the country.

While stressing the need for the two countries to honour the agreement, the British Minister of Justice thanked the Federal Government for making it possible for the two countries to finalise the agreement which would lead to the mutual exchange of prisoners.

"We believe that the agreement today is a positive step in furthering our mutual relationship and partnership with Nigeria for prisoner exchange," he said.

Responding, Comrade Abba Moro promised that the country will ensure the agreement on prisoner exchange becomes operative before the end of this year.

Politics / Jonathan Is Better Than Obasanjo - Abati by iamnigeria: 8:28pm On Jan 05, 2014
The Special Adviser to the President Goodluck Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said former President Olusegun Obasanjo, left Nigeria in darkness after his tenure. Abati spoke in an interview on Sahara TV on Saturday and said power supply has become better in the country than it was in 2007 and 2010, the Punch online reported.

During the interview, Abati responded to questions on the several issues involving the Presidency, and tongue-lashed the opposition for attacking the President on almost all issues.

On the proposed national conference, which was scheduled to hold this year, Abati praised the President, saying it would be better than the political reform conference that was organised by Obasanjo.

He said, “The last political reform conference, organised by Obasanjo failed. It ended up the discussion of tenure elongation and third term ambition.”

Abati faulted those who have questioned why Jonathan’s government scheduled the national conference to be held the same year the country is marking 100 years of amalgamation.

He said the celebration of Nigeria at 100 is not about the Jonathan administration, but a celebration by the private sector, the state and local government and all Nigerians.

Politics / Are You Ready To LEAD Nigeria? Are You Ready To SERVE Nigeria? by iamnigeria: 7:23pm On Dec 28, 2013
Generational Voices, also referred to as GenVoices, is a growing non partisan pan-Nigerian movement of persons aged 18 to 40. It was conceived as a means to convert online engagement into practical and sustainable change.

A key lesson from Occupy Nigeria was that social media chatter and street protests were not sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s problems. It became clear that without political participation and active engagement in government, our generation will continue to be denied the chance to make widespread and definitive impact.

GenVoices is working to birth political, economic, social and technological solutions to national challenges by encouraging more members of our generation to participate in politics and make a difference in government and governance.

Through our Under 40 Dialogues initiative, GenVoices creates opportunities across Nigeria and the Diaspora for individuals to come together to share their desires, dreams, concerns and solutions for Nigeria.

100KVoices, our flagship project for 2014 is a landmark event which aims to demonstrate the strength of the numbers in our generation. On January 18, 2014, at least 100,000 young people will convene at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos from across Nigeria to discuss our future and proffer solutions.

Politics / Aliko Dangote Set To Spend $9 Billion On Refinery Project In Lagos by iamnigeria: 12:13pm On Dec 28, 2013
Mr. Dangote now has a plan to quintuple his wealth—and become one of the five richest people in the world. He will spend $9 billion to build the largest privately owned refinery in Nigeria, which produces more oil than any other African country but must import most of the motor fuel and diesel it uses because existing refineries are dilapidated and inefficient.

Within about two years, the new refinery in a stretch of swampy shoreline outside Lagos could start piping in crude from roughly 7 miles offshore, bypassing a traffic jam of tankers often stuck for weeks. Competing against four government-managed refineries that run at barely 20% of their capacity, Mr. Dangote would double the country's maximum refinery output.

The refinery project is a bet that Africa's economy will keep growing much faster than the rest of the world, especially as a wave of consumerism sweeps the continent.

New airlines are taking off so quickly that some jet-fuel sellers, hurt by a shortage, have been caught trying to fill airplane tanks with kerosene instead. Car imports through Nigeria's main port have risen to about 300 cars a day.

As a result, Africa now is the world's fastest-growing oil user, and the International Energy Agency expects oil consumption in Africa to surge about 30% to 4.5 million barrels a day by 2018. The jump represents 15% of the world's projected rise in oil demand.

Car Talk / Made-in-Nigeria Vehicles To Sell For N1.2m by iamnigeria: 1:12am On Dec 23, 2013
The Federal Government, in a bid to ensure the successful implementation of its recently approved National Automotive Industry Development Plan, said it would encourage local auto manufacturers to produce less expensive models with price range of between N1.2m and N1.5m.

It also said it would collaborate with auto manufacturers, franchise holders, reputable motor dealers and selected banks to put in place an all-inclusive domestic dealership network through which a user-friendly vehicle purchase scheme could be funded by the National Automotive Council.

These are contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the NAC and obtained by our correspondent in Abuja.

The statement said, “Under market development, the NAIDP anticipated that higher-end expensive models will still be imported into the country in the initial stage, but the new strategy is to encourage local auto manufacturers to focus primarily on lower-end less expensive models with price range of between N1.2m and N1.5m; which is affordable to the middle class, coupled with other finance options.”

The statement added that the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, had constituted two committees to ensure seamless implementation of the recently approved automotive plan.

Education / SSANU Threatens Strike by iamnigeria: 12:39pm On Dec 21, 2013
THE Senior Staff Association of the Nigerian Universities (SSANU),Western Zone, yesterday threatened to down tools if the Federal Government decides to fully implement the Needs Assessment Report which it described as poisonous to Non-Academic Staff in universities.
Addressing newsmen on the issues raised by the Prof. Yakubu led Needs Assessment Committee at a lecture held at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), the National Vice President and chairman Western Zone, of the SSANU, Comrade Alfred Jimoh, said the association had earlier faulted the composition of the Needs committee set up by the Federal Government to identify the gaps in the university system.

He said the committee was not only "lopsided but one sided because it excluded both students and the non-teaching staff in the system and compromise only members of the Academic Staff and the then incumbent President of ASUU. "The report of the committee is laced with some poisonous and odious recommendations against the Non teaching staff, which we call satanic verses of Needs Assessment Report".
He said therefore that "one cannot but wonder how government could expect an objective and dispassionate report from such a warped and highly skewed committee. True to type and as anticipated by the Non teaching staff of Nigerian universities, the committee came out with a voluminous document full of graphics, illustrations and pictorials which range from truth to half truth and altar false hood.

Politics / Nigeria Paid A Huge Price For What South Africa Has Become Today by iamnigeria: 9:10am On Dec 10, 2013
Source: http://www.iamnigeria.net/2013/12/nigeria-paid-huge-price-for-what-south.html

Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on Monday said that Nigeria deserved respect for the leading role it played in ending the apartheid regime in South Africa. Addressing newsmen on the death of Nelson Mandela, Fashola said the country made huge sacrifices to free South Africa from the pangs of apartheid. He said it was ironical that Nigerians faced daily harassment in South Africa, while those who enthroned apartheid got more respect in that country.

Fashola also wondered why those who promoted the suppression of black South Africans through the policy were the same people now celebrating Mandela the more. “Tribute to Mandela, either during his life or after his death, cannot really be too much.

“We are privileged to share this planet with him. But then, there are more questions than answers. “When you look at the part of the world where ovation is now the loudest, it was the part from where the pain was the most vicious. In a very cruel irony, history is being revised.

“The people, who collaborated with the government that enthroned apartheid at that time, are the people that are paying the biggest tribute now.

“But I ask myself: is this not the time for deep reflection? I doubt if any African country expended as much time, as much money and as much commitment as the Nigerian Government.

“I was a teenager then in 1976 when anti-apartheid campaigns really gained resurgence in every home in this country.

“Nigeria paid a huge price for what South Africa has become today. I remember the anti-apartheid campaign was at the core of Nigerian foreign policy.

“I remember we did not go for a particular Commonwealth Games because of South Africa.

“I remember we took drastic measures against the foreign collaborators of apartheid regime and nationalised assets.

“But the tragic irony is that we are the ones being driven out of South Africa. The British can enter South Africa. We have to take a visa.

“These are deep questions because they hurt me. And we have to do something about the situation.”Fashola urged the Federal Government to take urgent steps to reposition Nigeria as a leading and respectable voice in the continent.

The governor described Mandela as one of the greatest leaders the world had ever had, saying he would be missed by all.

He urged leaders to learn from the legacies of the former South African leader, charging them to put their best in the service of their people.

"This unique move is unsurpassed in its novelty and gives our subscribers not only great value but the freedom to utilise their bonuses in any way they want,” he added.

Travel / Online Application For UK VISA Anger Lagos Lawmakers by iamnigeria: 5:44pm On Dec 09, 2013
A newly-introduced UK visa application system, which is said to mandate all Nigerian applicants to make payments in the US currency, has Lagos lawmakers up in arms. Nigeria’s Lagos State House of Assembly has appealed to the British High Commission to review the system, as lawmakers in West African country say the UK government is trying to prevent Nigerians from travelling to that country.

The new online visa application payment system only accepts payments in US dollars via a Verve debit card, Visa or Mastercard (credit or debit card) or the mobile money system PAGA. And in a statement signed by the Lagos State House of Assembly chairman, Segun Olulade, the house has criticised the system saying that Nigeria does not compel UK citizens to make payment only in naira while applying for a Nigerian visa in the UK.

“While the new payment system is good for streamlining visa application system, option of payment via naira master card should have been included since not all applicants are expected to possess a domiciliary account or dollar master cards,” Olulade stated.

Politics / Nigeria's Economic Growth Is Not Benefiting The Poor by iamnigeria: 5:37pm On Dec 09, 2013
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told a forum of business leaders the country's economy likely grew at 6.7 per cent in 2013, in line with the seven per cent average over the past decade. "It is clear that the top five to 10 per cent is capturing most of whatever growth there is and people at the bottom are being left behind," the former World Bank managing director said.

Okonjo-Iweala told delegates an estimated 1.2 million jobs were generated in the past 12 months but this was inadequate in the country of about 170 million people. "I think we need to grow at least nine to 10 per cent (a year) to drive the job growth the way we want," she said.

Her audience of executives at a Lagos hotel ballroom included Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, a tycoon with interests in cement, food and more recently energy. "People in this room: if we don't put our minds to this problem, that we need to create jobs and not just create wealth, you'll find that the whole economy may be in danger," she said.

Education / N200bn University (ASUU) Funds Deposited In CBN – FG by iamnigeria: 3:13am On Dec 04, 2013
Federal Government says it has deposited the N200bn promised as funding to universities in an account with the Central Bank of Nigeria. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, confirmed this on Tuesday. The amount is for renewal of infrastructure in the nation’s public universities.

Okupe, who featured on Channels Television programme ‘Sunrise Daily,’ said from the government’s perspective, everything that needed to be done had been done.

According to him, many of the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities have been agreed upon at the 13-hour meeting the union had with President Goodluck Jonathan which ended in the early hours of October 4.

“At the end of that meeting, the government proposed that everything that has been agreed should be put in a Memorandum of Understanding and that the two parties should sign. But the leadership of ASUU declined and said instead of that, they would rather have a letter expressing everything that has been resolved therein, and that will suffice for them.”

Okupe stressed that the attitude of the ASUU leadership showed that the seed of discord and evidence of bad faith already existed.

Politics / Nigeria: 144th Most Corrupt Nation In The World by iamnigeria: 2:30am On Dec 04, 2013
Nigeria has been ranked 144th most corrupt country as Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia are seen as the world’s most corrupt countries while Denmark and New Zealand are nearly squeaky-clean, graft watchdog Transparency International said in a survey yesterday.

In the current report, Nigeria scored 25 while it scored 27 in 2012 with a percentile rank of 16 per cent out of 100. Nigeria scored 0.992708873. In 2012 Nigeria was ranked 139th most corrupt nation. The Corruption Perceptions Index ranks countries and territories based on how corrupt their public sector is perceived to be and the country is ranked at 144 out of 177 countries included in the report.
Worldwide, almost 70 per cent of nations are thought to have a “serious problem” with public servants on the take and none of the 177 countries surveyed this year got a perfect score, said the Berlin-based non-profit group.

Transparency International’s annual list is the most widely used indicator of sleaze in political parties, police, justice systems and civil services, a scourge which undermines development and the fight against poverty. “Corruption hurts the poor most,” lead researcher Finn Heinrich told AFP.
“That’s what you see when you look at the countries at the bottom. Within those countries, it’s also poor people who get hurt the most. These countries will never get out of the poverty trap if they don’t tackle corruption.”

Akinwumi Adesina has been described as a passionate defender of African farmers, relentless in unlocking opportunities for farmers and changing Africa’s narrative on agriculture to wealth creation, away from poverty reduction.

“I am truly honoured and humbled by this prestigious award, which I dedicate to Africa’s farmers and the new cadre of young business entrepreneurs who have discovered the hidden gem for sustainable wealth creation on our continent – Agriculture,” Adesina said receiving the award.

The Nigerian minister had made commendable impact in the Agriculture sector within two years of his taking office.

He turned agriculture away from being a development program into a business activity generating wealth for millions of farmers.

The minister had stressed that Africa, with its huge potential, could not be ‘a museum of poverty.’

“My passion is using agricultural business and finance innovations to turn Nigerian and African farmers and agribusinesses into millionaires and billionaires. Nigeria must become a global powerhouse in agriculture,” he said...

Out of the 140 million Nigerians who use mobile phones, only an approximately 12.7 million use data connected phones, meaning that over 90 per cent of Nigerians still use feature phones, said Robert Bole, Director of Innovation, Broadcasting Board of Directors, Voice of America.

Bole stated this while speaking on mobile opportunities for Africa at the inaugural edition of the Nigerian Apps Summit held in Lagos recently.

He said that, "A mobile opportunity that not only exists for Africa but the rest of the world is how services will connect from low bandwidth populations to high bandwidth services. In Nigeria, there are approximately 12.7 million data connected phones out of total subscription of140 million. Education / We Didn’t Give ASUU Ultimatum – President Jonathan by iamnigeria: 10:09pm On Nov 30, 2013
President Goodluck Jonathan has weekend, said his government did not give the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, an ultimatum to resume work or be sacked. Fielding questions from newsmen at the expanded caucus meeting of the Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party held at Government House, Yenagoa, the President said, the Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision of the Committee of Vice Chancellors.

“We didn’t give them ultimatum; it was the Committee of Vice Chancellors that took that decision. The Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision.” Jonathan also said the strike embarked upon by the ASUU was no longer a trade dispute , but a subversive action.

He said, “What ASUU is doing is no longer trade union. I have intervened in other labour issues before now, once I invite them they respond and after the meeting they take decision and call off the strike.

“At times we don’t even give them a long notice, unlike, in the case of ASUU that was given four days notice before the meeting. As you are meeting to resolve trade disputes, you expect the trade unions to get their officials ready.

“What was expected having met with the highest authorities in the land for long hours, was for ASUU to immediately issue statement within 12 or latest 24 hours , to state their position whether they were accepting government’s offer or not. And if they are not accepting they should state the reason for that.”

"The GTExpress Service is banking via agent locations such as supermarkets, schools, cinemas, markets and restaurants. It is an initiative to reach out to the underserved and unbanked segments of the population through the use of non-banking retail outlets," the bank said in a statement.

It said these non-banking outlets (agent locations) will provide banking services such as Account Opening (Instant Accounts), Cash deposit and Withdrawal via ATMs, Customer Enquiries, Bills payment, Funds transfer services (local money value transfer) and other activities as the Central Bank of Nigeria may prescribe from time to time.

According to the MD of GTBank; Segun Agbaje, "the unbanked sector of the economy presents a significant growth area for banks in emerging markets. Our objective is to offer banking products and services to this segment via non-banking outlets thus breaking down barriers to financial inclusion such as accessibility and cost."

Sina Ayegbusi, Head of the banks' Technology Division said the bank's commitment to superior customer service experience drives it to ensure that it utilizes revolutionary technology to simplify and secure the online banking transaction and experience of its customers.
"The upgrade to our Internet Banking platform gives our diverse costumers various on-the-go banking options due to its responsive design that makes it convenient for use on computer and mobile devices", he said.

Celebrities / 11-year Old Nigerian Girl Makes 100 Most Influential Africans List by iamnigeria: 9:03pm On Nov 30, 2013
Copied from http://www.iamnigeria.net/2013/11/2013-11-year-old-nigerian-girl-makes.html

One of the most notable women (of the 32 women in the list) is 11-year old Zuriel Oduwole (Nigerian), featured on the magazine for her fight for the education of women. In the same vein, the oldest woman on the list is the Former foreign minister of Somaliland, Edna Adan (76), famous for fighting for women’s rights and health.

In defining what passes for ‘influence’, New African has been careful to note that while there is indeed a wide array of qualities and proclivities that earmark people as ‘influential’, a person’s impact on the wide public, social and political community is one of the greatest indicators of influence. Bearing in mind that popularity doesn’t necessarily mean influential, New African Magazine has compiled its list of 100 most influential Africans, 23 of them being Nigerians.

Nigeria, with 23 nationals in the list, tops the list as the country with the highest number of influential people with South Africa coming second with 22 influential people. News African says of the list: “The list offers a glimpse into the diverse breed of young and established leaders intent on reinventing the face of Africa…They include entrepreneurs, spiritual leaders, political game-changers, and sporting record breakers to name but a few.”
