Minister of Works, David Umahi, has granted a 16-day holiday break for civil servants in his ministry to observe the Christmas and New Year festivities. The minister personally signed a memo titled ‘Holiday break in the Federal Ministry of Works,’ dated December 21, announcing the approval of this extended break. The circular was addressed to the Permanent Secretary, Director of Human Resources, and directors within the ministry.

While cautioning against the signing of any documents on his behalf, the minister explicitly exempted security and fire service personnel. These personnel may be summoned during emergencies, as stipulated in the memo.

Umahi’s directive aligns with a similar memo issued just two days prior by the Accountant General, Oluwatoyin Madein. The Accountant General’s memo instructed the closure of all government accounts before December 31.

The minister said, “Mr President has just given a holiday break to all Federal Executive Council members from Thursday, 21st December to Wednesday, 10th January 2024. In the Federal Ministry of Works, the office shall officially close for a break from Friday, 22nd December at 1 00pm to Sunday, 7th January 2024.

“Work is expected to resume from Monday, 8th January, 2024. During this period, the Permanent Secretary and Director Human Resources will arrange for required essential staff that will be permitted to work in the offices and within Federal Ministry of Works compounds.

“Should there be need for any director to perform any official function, the DHR, PS and honourable minister must be notified for permission. Otherwise no official function will be required during this period. During this period, a director or staff may be recalled to perform an urgent duty and such staff must have to oblige to perform such duties.

“No one is permitted to sign any document on behalf of the honourable minister within this period. The honourable minister will be available to attend to any emergencies during this period. Security and fire prevention personnel must all be on duty within the period. Staff must exercise maximum caution while travelling during the holiday and all staff phones must be reachable during the break.”

There are however concerns that such a long holiday ought not to be contemplated by the works ministry in view of the plethora of infrastructure projects currently ongoing across the country.

A civil society activist, Isaac Nwobu, wondered how the minister plans to ensure continuity of such ongoing projects, many of which he said require monitoring and payment to contractors.

He said, “How can a minister grant such a holiday when the federal government has already issued a circular for holiday? And to imagine that it’s a ministry where contractors and other service providers are in the field working without ceasing.

“Is Umahi implying that payment and other critical official duties must be put in abeyance for two weeks?

Frank Akinpelu, a student, also likened Umahi’s 16-day holiday directive to sabotage.

“Such a long break is unnecessary. There is no better way of killing a nation,” he said.

In the midst of a scarcity of new naira notes, hawkers of the newly redesigned notes have spread the popular Dadi Motor Park in Sabon Gari-Zaria, Kaduna State.
Large wads of different denominations of new naira notes were on show for potential buyers at the entrance to Dadi Motor Park in the Kwangila neighborhood of Zaria, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

NAN’s investigation finds that a bundle of new naira notes in denominations of N200 notes was being sold for N30,000; N500 and N1,000 notes are being sold for N70,000 and N130,000, respectively; and N100 notes are being sold for N16,000.

According to Mohammed Bello, a new naira note hawker, depending on the note denominations, they paid between N70,000 and N130,000 to purchase brand-new N500,000 notes.

Mr. Bello refused to reveal the money’s origins or its sources of encumbrances, though.

Thomas Damina, a patron of the mints merchants and a resident of Gozaki village in Kafur Local Government Area of Katsina State, disclosed to NAN that he purchased the fresh N20,000 and N1000 notes for N25,000.

He claimed he was compelled to pay the expensive amount for the money in order to pay the laborers working on his dry-season farm.

“Traders in my community (Gozaki) are rejecting the old notes and the money is not available at the banks. I have no option than to buy from cash hawkers,” Mr Damina said.

NAN said that people flocked to the banks in an effort to trade in the new Naira notes before the deadline of January 31.

When NAN visited PZ, the commercial center of the old city of Zaria, the majority of the ATMs of certain commercial banks were not dispensing cash.

Trading in Naira notes is illegal under Section 21 of the CBN Act, 2007, and is subject to punishment under that section’s Section 21 Subsection 4.

In spite the laws prohibiting hawking of naira notes and coins, the perpetrators were freely doing their businesses close to the police out post at Kwangila, Sabon Gari Zaria.

Reacting to the development, DSP Mohammed Jalige, the Police Public Relations Officer, Kaduna State police command, assured that the police would swing into action against the crime.

Anthony Ehilebo, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) head of new media, has attacked Michael Achimugu, a former adviser to the party’s presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, branding him a “serial blackmailer.”
Atiku, his family, and advisers have been appearing in video and audios that Achimugu has been distributing, pleading with Nigerians not to vote for the former vice president.

Atiku Abubakar allegedly spent $120 million on the day of the 2019 presidential election alone, according to him.

The PDP presidential candidate acknowledged to instructing former President Olusegun Obasanjo on how public funds might be siphoned through the use of Special Purpose Vehicles in the first of many audios that Achimugu had allegedly shared with Atiku (SPV).

The Bimodal Voters Accreditation System will be used by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct its mock accreditation with eligible voters on Saturday, February 4, 2023. (BVAS).
Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the commission’s chairman, revealed this information on Friday in Abuja during a meeting with the resident electoral commissioners.

He said 456 voting places would be used nationwide for the election.
The head of INEC stated that following the completion of the mock accreditation, the BVAS machines would be set up and prepared for usage during the general elections.

Yakubu explained that the mock accreditation exercise is aimed at testing the readiness of the BVAS machines before the forthcoming elections.

The INEC chairman also disclosed that while the distribution of non-sensitive materials has been concluded, the distribution of sensitive materials for the elections to the various states is at its advanced stage.

Yakubu, who said the commission might the commission may consider other options for the collection of PVCs, expressed satisfaction with the desire of Nigerians to collect their voters’ cards.

He said out of the 940,200 PVCs sent to Lagos state, about 839,720 have so far been collected as of Thursday.

Recall that the INEC during his appearance at Chatham House last week disclosed there would be a mock accreditation with the BVAS machines before the election proper.

The Osun Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Osogbo has declared Adegboyega Oyetola as the lawful winner of the July 16th, 2022 elections, having found ‘proof’ of over-voting.

Kingsley Enageghe, the director of a hotel in Lagos state’s Surulere axis, was arrested by the police on Thursday, January 5, for reportedly shooting at a hotel visitor and one of his employees over the payment for a room on the property.
According to eyewitnesses, Enageghe had asked his staff to explain a room that was being used by one of his clients. According to reports, the staff informed Enageghe that the visitor had paid for the lodging he had previously occupied.

The guest declined to pay the day’s charge, despite the director’s insistence that they do so. After getting into a fight, Mr. Engeghe allegedly walked into his office, pulled a single-barrel gun, and shot his employer and the visitor in the legs, inflicting injury.

When the injured employees reported the incident to the divisional police station, the suspect was quickly taken into custody and the pistol was retrieved.

Omoyele Sowore, the AAC’s presidential candidate, has criticized Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for pledging to reform internet fraudsters, popularly known as “Yahoo Boys,” by establishing technology hubs for them if they win next month’s election.

At a rally in Edo State on Thursday, Tinubu urged a sizable throng of supporters to vote for him if they desired wealth. The gathering was held at the University of Benin Sports Complex, Ugbowo.

The APC candidate, who identified himself as a competent man, promised to construct industrial and technological hubs to transform young people into tools for progress.

“I will convert Yahoo boys and make them useful by converting their talents and intellects to produce chips for industries. We can defeat poverty, ignorance and homelessness. We have the knowledge, we have the brain to do it. Trust me. I am an expert in finding the way where there is no way,” Tinubu had said.

Reacting, Sowore wrote on his verified Twitter handle: “@officialABAT has completely lost it! To think that no one in the “yahoo-yahoo” @OfficialAPCNg party conscientious enough to object to these absolute rubbishing is most disheartening. #WeCantContinueLikeThis.”
