Thanks brother! I'd appreciate the number. I know Ukana Offot. Do they sell East-West or Technisem or other varieties of seeds? What of foliar fertilizer or pesticide?
500 oron sell seeds from many companies unlike Ekponwa who sells more of agrochemicals

correct, sack is best watered twice daily during dry season, morning and evening, seems your sacks are too close together,it tends to cause problems with ventilation vand DM,even our own sack we spaced 1 feet apart is giving us headache, spacing is a critical factor in sack farming because the crops will come up too healthy and sound that you will be the victim of your own success.
watering once a day is quite challenging not to talk of twice angry shocked shocked I pity those planning one acre with sacks o....btw, has anyone cultivated cucumber/any other vegetable close to a river that has a sandy soil? What were the challenges you faced, and did manure help improve the soil quality? I am asking cos I have access to land there but the entire terrain leading to the river looks sandy, the swamp nearby is a total no-go area

In as much as there are loads of advantages of using sack, You are more likely to get bitter cucumbers from the sack method than ground if you can't water properly and daily

Ekponwa @ ukana offot str. Uyo
AKEES @ 500 oron road( there is another one @ oron road, but I don't remember the address)
The shop off atiku abubakar has relocated to ibesikpo, but I don't usually buy from them...
I am getting to know some new shops I have not done business with, so I can't recommend them! I will get Ekponwa and AKEES phone no(s) for you by weekend

Paul, the fact that they don't like the darker green cucumber here is a big problem for farmers. More yield would have bn gotten with those varieties.
BTW, where do u buy ur hybrid seeds from around AKS? I need good cukes, herbanero/capsicum and tomato seeds.
That's the challenge we are all facing here o, the market in AKS is too selective! Even Nandini that's not that dark is still not totally accepted, they don't want the big sized kayin too shocked shocked! The thing tire me o...as for where I get seeds, do you stay in Uyo?

I have heard so much about tomatoes and I think it's time to give it a trial,a friend planted the Thai agro uc3034 variety and smiled happily to the bank,we are gearing up for tomatoes next year rainy season that when tomatoes are very costly.
I have not laid my hands on that cultivar, how red/big is it? and what was the yield like sir?
Just study the growth pattern of this cultivar before you try it so you don't use the wrong staking methods o, Padma staking pattern won't work well with platinum o cheesy cheesy

good morning boss.
thanks for your timely response.
I harvested the last bag today making it 18 bags from 490 stand.
that is my total harvest and today makes it 2months sine planting.
the plant has withered already
I can't say it's good or bad! It's relative to your expenses...I believe you have a farm record, calculate how much you have spent on all farm related activities and commodities, the profit you made(if any) determines the profitability of such a venture. Even if you don't make profit, don't be discouraged, just reanalyze all your expenses and be creative in cost management, e.g
it doesn't make sense for you to spray a full knapsack of insecticides and fungicides on such quantity as half is more than enough(a full knapsack should cover between 600-750m² if done effectively)
Don't buy multiple chemicals/fertilizer for the same function as you are just wasting money ( a neighbor farm uses Di-grow red and agrovert 12-**46 for fruiting) that's just money wasted as he also uses npk-mg 12-12-17-2 granular fertilizer.
If your beds are done well, you may not need to pay for weeding in a cuke farm, since your farm is small. Just uproot every weed you see while walking/working in the farm, and once the cukes grow they will frustrate all weed inside the bed leaving only the paths
There are many other instances of people overspending/overbudgeting on simple things. Just spend smartly.

I think it is physically impossible to harvest 17 bags from 490 crops at one harvest or do you mean the total cumulative harvest then it is fairly a good harvest,if 500 stands will give you 17 bags then a plot of 1500 crops will produce 51 bags which is not bad at all @ current price of #4k that will be #200k from one plot in roughly 3 months time,I am yet to see a practical crop that can pull such money from one plot in 3 months
Tomatoes will shock you shocked shocked, not in 3months o, but you will give testimony here...knowing how the market works is key here though

it is always refreshing to read such an inspiring post, but harvesting 12 bags from 50 grams of seed from a rookie farmer is quite astonishing, take the fact that max crop that can be gotten from 50 grams is roughly 1500 crops,at 100 fruits per bag,we are looking at 1200 fruits which is almost 80% yield,i will not be surprised if the production clocks 50 bags before die off ,well done OP,pls apply npk 151515 to each crop,it's well.
Surely going to beat the 50bags mark... trying cu99 in my state during the rainy season is suicide mission, I would have loved to try it, but the market women generally prefer Saira over here and it's way too expensive as we speak now

Hello everyone,

I Did my first trial on cucumber farming and I Did my first harvest today glory be to God Almighty it was beyond my expectations.
When I wanted to start farming I googled about Cucumber farming and found this thread then I join nairaland, I read this thread from page 1 to page 92. I was eager to succeed against all odds and today it has started paying.
I planted 50g cu999 even though am in Lagos and people kept saying I won't sell n it's 2.5k or 3k for a bag. But from all I read here cu999 is much easier to cultivate, so I went on against all odds.
I did my first harvest today and got 12 bags and sold all today at 4k per bag. Glory be to Jesus.
I sincerely appreciate all the support I got from everyone one especially Mr Okoro Emeka and ideepaul, I always call Mr Okoro Emeka for assistance and he always came through. Thank u sir for what u do, may God reward u both with Long life in Jesus name Amen.
Wow! I am so happy for you...4k shocked shocked shocked, the price is marginally better there, and btw did you let the fruits get big or you harvested them when they were like the other market sized fruits

Can I plant only cu99 (50g ).
Does your market accept cu99? It can be planted alone as it has both male and female flowers in abundance

Am in Lagos and it hasn't rained in over 3weeks, am thinking of trying it in small quantity though. I did some research on it and it seems to be a high yielding cultivar.
Can u pls contribute if u know more about it. I also saw Kareem f1 do u know it
I really don't know a lot about the south west weather, but for the first time in months, we have had almost 3 days without rain(guess it's the August break). it rains constantly over here. seeds from companies apart from east west are hard to find here, even though they are a bit pricy. I don't know a bit about Kareem honestly

Thanks for always enlightening us sir . Please what quantity( per ml )of z-force do you use in a 16L spraying machine.
60-80grams per knapsack for vegetables like cukes, tomato and pepper, etc. if you have constant heavy downpours, then Zforce alone is not advisable

Well done. You couldnt answer any of my questions so why bother asking me what I am planning? Well I am considering groundnuts, herbs onions and peppers. currently doing small scale (many different crops) on approx 2 plots for personal consumption ; but looking to go large scale soon as an almost complete novice.
Please don't pick offense with the response, he is actually helping you! There is no fixed market for farm managers, different people meet potential managers through varying methods. You may see a hardworking labourer who is experienced and trustworthy, you may employ someone through the recommendation of a seasoned farmer, you may also opt to go for a consultant, and spend your time in the farm. It's all about what you want to achieve, and the time available to you.
But since you have done groundnut, onions, herbs, and pepper in small scale settings, why don't you use such experience to expand, do you think it is economical to pay a farm manager based on the ROI? I don't do that farm manager sh#t btw! I meet with locals, relate with a lot of them, find the influential people within the area, make friends with them and get a farm spy/village girlfriend who will look after my investment ( things we do for love/opportunities to leave the village grin grin grin). Make them happy and they will protect your investment when you are not around. Sweetmouth people, but don't promise what can't offer o, and be a man of your word before you loose trust

Why don't you buy from your neighborhood seed sellers? Two names pop up ifedola and seedworld (I have not done business with them, but they are long standing agro inputs dealers)

I planted 10g, but will not be enough to plant 2plot. Remember I said "almost" the way am seeing it exactly 2plot will be 3900 or 4k stand. Don't worry I will quote you with accurate figure when I plant cocumba by November.
143*105ft(15015ft²) is more than 2 plots(60*120)*2=14400ft².
Also a standard acre takes 8000-10000 tomato plants (depending on cultivar, agronomic practise, farmers risk taking ability, time of the year, and your climatic zone). By this standard, 2 plots will take between 2700- 3300 tomato plants. You may decide to add more or reduce based on the your risk taking capacity. Spacing for for Padma and platinum is 50cm, farming concepts and practices are dynamic, so you may adapt such to suite your needs

thank you sir.
I used two of its cover
2 capsfull per knapsack? shocked angry I don't know how big the cover is, but I believe it's past 30ml! For a 50ec Chlorpyriphos based insecticide, you should not exceed 30ml, I use 15ml per knapsack on my lil farm and it works ( I was told to use 30ml for vegetative stage and less than 15ml for flowering stage) I won't use it for flowering crops at all though. I don't use predator for the records, but I have tried my hands on other high conc. chlorpyriphos based insecticides. Buy injection syringe from pharmacy stores that will help you measure stuff accurately, and always ask the seller for guidance if instructions on bottle is not clearly understood

I did that since last month, what you need is to search for a suitable design, the difference won't be much based on what you stated on the pepper thread...when you get a design in mind, just upload the image and I will help in modification of materials needed and necessary corrections to the design...btw if you can spare some extra cash, I would advice you use iron mesh similar to that used for poultry galvanized cage, it's durable an may last for many years

You will need
22-27 pieces of 2*2 polines
4 pieces of 2*3 for the main support
30 hinges for the doors
60 pieces of capper nails for the hinge
1 roll of wire-nesh with large openings(buying full roll is economical)
7-9metre long aluminium pan or any suitable material for urine collector( don't use Nigerian zinc material because the urine will destroy it quickly)
½",1", 1½", 2", 3" nails ( I don't buy nails, so I can't help with how many pounds you will need)

chicken dung left outside for 2 months? shocked shocked
If it's sawdust based chicken dung especially from broilers that you left outside without covering, just know the "manure" is 98 sawdust, and wood chippings has a high carbon footprint which can stunt crop if present in excessively high quantity. The poultry dung you should use should be sourced from layers and not broilers, btw,you were saying nothing beats pig dung based manure angry angry have you tried goat and rabbit dungs before?
